Chapter Six: Let me be your hero

Jou walked into school stiffly the next morning. For once he was on time as Makimo had given him a lift on his way to work. Jou had just taken a couple of sore steps into the school gates when a small bundle crashed into him with a joyful cry.

“Jou!” Yugi cried. Hearing Jou's pained yelp, the smaller boy jumped back and let out a gasp. “What on earth happened?”

“It isn't as bad as it looks Yugi.” Jou hastened to reassure the tri-color haired boy.

“But…” Yugi stuttered.

“Seriously, I'll tell you all about it when we're in class and everyone is there. I don't feel like telling the tale over and over.” Yugi didn't look happy about this but stayed silent, sticking close to Jou, and not letting anyone get near the blonde boy. Finally everyone was sitting in his or her classroom seats and Joey told the whole gang what had happened. He left out certain parts, such as bathing Kaiba. When he was finished there was silence until Honda spoke.

“You helped Kaiba?”

“I wasn't gonna just leave him. Sure he's a jerk, but no one deserves that.” Jou protested.

“I'd say that he deserves it and more.” Honda snapped out viciously. Ryou looked up at the taller boy his eyes cloudy.

“How can you say that?” Ryou asked in a pained tone.

“Easily, I don't see what you guys are getting so upset about. It's not as though any of us really give a shit about Kaiba. Hell, after the crap that he's put us through I think it's kind of funny that he's having some trouble of his own.” Hondas eyes looked like pebbles, with no emotion showing at all. Jou didn't think he'd ever seen the other boy like this.

“Human pain and suffering is never funny.” Yugi burst out and the bell rang loudly. The group split up to go to the classes with tension running through it. As Honda was walking off Jou noticed Duke run after the brunette and grab hold of his arm. Jou frowned as the raven-haired boy had kept silent and impassive throughout the whole of the previous discussion. Jou sidled closer too the pair and overheard Duke speaking.

“Honda I never thought you could be that cruel.”

“It's none of your business.” Honda replied icily and pulling his arm out of the others grasp.

“You're not that kind of person.” Duke insisted. “What did he do to you to make you hate him so?”

“It's none of your business.” The spike-haired boy repeated. “And even if it was, I know you don't care. All you ever do is lower my self-esteem. You don't care.” Honda's voice didn't waver from its monotone as he strode off leaving the emerald-eyed teen standing there and Jou just heard him whisper.

“But I do care.” Jou raised one eyebrow at the quiet confession but shrugged. After his own dealings with Kaiba yesterday he wasn't one to judge. He'd talk to Devlin later; right now he was late for his higher-class music lesson. With a yelp the blonde boy ran off.
Would you dance
if I asked you to dance?
Would you run
and never look back?
Would you cry
if you saw me cry?
And would you save my soul, tonight?
Jou slammed to door open and the rest of his music class stared at him. Jou especially felt the intense gaze of a certain sapphire eyed teen and frowned. Kaiba shouldn't be in school, he hadn't been in class and Jou had decided that the other teen had used that enormously clever brain for once and stayed home. Jou quietly growled to himself. Wasn't it typical the one higher class that he'd managed to get himself into, moneybags was in it as well. Then again all of Kaiba's classes were higher. Jou was brought out of his musing abruptly when the teacher clapped her hands to get his attention.
“Thank you for gracing us with your presence Mr. Jounouchi.” She said sarcastically, “I'm afraid all of our instruments have been handed out today so you will take the vocals.” The class sniggered, although this was a higher music class, most of the class had gotten here by excelling in one instrument and had at one time or another had to sing when instruments ran out. None had ever managed to impress with their vocal talents. The only two that had never had to sing were Jou and Kaiba. Jou mainly never had to go through the torture as he'd been found to have amazing aptitude with all instruments and therefore could play any spare one that was left over. Kaiba had never had to do it because…well he was Kaiba, enough said really. This being what it was, the class was looking forward to seeing the music master of the class fall on his face. No one in the room doubted that brash Jounouchi with his thick accent would have a terrible voice. It would be the one instrument the blonde teen wouldn't be able to master. Jou himself felt his mouth go dry. Sure he'd been able to tell Kaiba that he wanted to be a singer, but actually standing up in front of people and singing was a situation that he never thought he'd find himself in.
“M...m…miss?” He managed to stutter out.
“Yes?” The teacher didn't give an inch. She'd never liked having the klutz in her class and had been frustrated in her efforts to find the boy unworthy at something. Now she'd finally found a way.
“What song is it I am to sing?” Jou asked.
“'Hero' by Enrique Iglesias.” Jou winced at her words. He knew the song. He'd even sung it a few times in the shower and knew it was hard to hit all the sharps that jumped up and down within the song.
“Great, always loved that song.” Jou gave the short woman a cocky grin and went to stand in the designated spot.
“Whenever you are ready Mr. Jounouchi the first two notes are yours. Mr. Kaiba will follow your lead.” Jou swallowed thickly and a quick glance sideways showed Kaiba sitting stiffly holding a guitar. The guitar was essential within the first verse as that was the only accompaniment the singer had.
“Would you dance if I asked you to dance?” Jou winced as the first note came out horribly flat and consequently the cord Kaiba strummed sounded horribly sharp in comparison even though it was correct. Jou stopped abruptly and could see Kaiba amused. Swallowing, he hesitantly asked, “May I start again please?”
“Of course Mr. Jounouchi, take your time.” The teacher had a smirk, rather like Kaiba's, on her face. Jou closed his eyes and imagined himself alone in his bedroom and softly began to sing. He didn't really hear what he was singing, he was too wrapped up in the feel of the music. Jou kept his eyes closed until the part where the song said `Oh, I just want to hold you. I just want to hold you. Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind? I don't care... You're here tonight.' With that his eyes snapped open and locked with azure eyes, neither boy seemed to be able to look away. The music weaved a spell around the two of them, locking them together. A spell that wasn't broken until Kaiba played the final cord of the song and hastily looked down at his hands. The room stayed silent and Jou went red. He couldn't have been that bad, could he? Suddenly there was a pair of hands clapping and Jou's head span round to stare at the headmaster who was walking in from the classroom door.
“Well Ms. Tusaki, I think we have found the person to lead the schools concert this summer in voice. Why did you never tell me you found such a gem?”
“I never knew.” The woman looked at the blushing boy her mouth hanging open.

Would you tremble
if I touched your lips?
Would you laugh?
Oh please tell me this.
Now would you die
for the one you loved?
Hold me in your arms, tonight.

The headmaster took Jou to his office to discuss the idea of Jou singing in the concert. Not quite believing it was happening Jou just agreed to everything the man said. Finally when he was free Jou discovered it was time for lunch and he headed towards the canteen in a daze, as he headed towards the table Yugi's excited voice floated across the room,
“Jou! The whole schools talking about it. What happened? I was down the hall and…” The rest of the small boy's sentence became garbled as congratulations were shouted from all corners of the room. Finally Jou squeezed down in between Yugi and Ryou,
“Hey bud, what was it you were saying earlier I couldn't hear you.”
“I said I was in lesson earlier and I suddenly heard this awesome voice singing and now everyone tells me it was you singing.”
“Yeah.” Jou mumbled, “Yeah it was me. Everyone's making such a big deal outta the fact that I have a decent voice, it's kinda creepy.” Yugi opened his mouth to say something when he was interrupted,
“Let's stop talking about it. I'm getting fed up of hearing everybody droning about a bit of bloody singing.” Ryou suddenly snapped out, when Yugi and Jou turned to look at him shocked the British boy offered a weak smile, “Sorry I've been having a few late nights recently, must have made me a bit cranky.” Jou frowned but accepted the explanation, now he thought about it the normally quiet boy had been acting slightly out of character lately; he hoped the soft boys psychotic yami wasn't causing him trouble. Still frowning Jou looked around again and asked,
“Hey guys where are Duke and Honda?”
“Hmmm? Oh I think Honda is still upset about this morning and I have no idea about Duke.” Yugi seemed preoccupied and then in the space of time it took Jou to blink Yami had taken control of the body, “Jounouchi, Ryou.” The grave spirit greeted the two boys,
“Yams.” Jou said back and Ryou just gave a small smile, Yami's eye twitched at the nickname but he let it pass,
“After some debate between myself and Yugi, he has persuaded me to give you some news which he feels you are going to be upset about?” Jou just raised an eyebrow at the other boy; yeah he could do that trick just like Kaiba could but generally he felt it made him too much like the colder boy. “We have a guest coming to visit tomorrow. They are going to be staying at the game shop for about a month.” To Jou's surprise Yami was looking increasingly uncomfortable.
“Yeah and does this guest have a name?” Jou asked when the other boy didn't elaborate.
“Urm…well…you see…Malik Ishtar.”
“What?!” Jou leapt up onto his feet and winced, he wished he hadn't done that his ankle still ached; he slowly sat back down, “What the hell is that psycho staying with you for.”
“ Now Jounouchi I know that you don't like Malik but he's a changed person. He's coming to town because now I have my memories back there may be a way for us to get rid of the scars on his back so he'll be free of them and…” If possible Yami looked even more uncomfortable, “and he thinks that Marik may be back.”
“M…Marik?” Ryou stuttered,
“Oh great its not enough that the psycho is coming to town but most likely the one that hell spat back out is tagging along for the ride, just great.” Jou muttered, he knew that the Egyptian boy had changed but having your mind taken over wasn't an easy thing to get over, Jou remembered all to well that helpless feeling he had when Malik was controlling him. Just then the bell rang signaling the end of lunch and the three boys parted ways saying that they'd see each other tomorrow.
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
Jou walked into the school car park intent of catching the bus home for once to save his aching muscles, suddenly a sleek Z8 pulled up by his side and Jou could see Kaiba sitting behind the wheel,
“Sore?” The brunette asked casually,
“Yeah, what of it?” Jou asked defensively, he really wasn't in the mood to deal with Kaiba's crap today. Kaiba shrugged,
“I though that you might want a lift since the state your in is mainly my fault.” Kaiba's face took on a disgruntled look after that admission. Jou weighed up the options, the bus was likely to be crowded and would take him forty minutes to get home, if he rode with Kaiba it would take ten minutes and he'd have to deal with Kaiba's crap for those ten minutes.
“Thanks.” Jou said. He opened the door and slid carefully onto the plush red leather seat, “Great car.” He added.
“Should be good the amount I paid for it.” Kaiba added, Jou stared at the other boy wondering is the blue-eyed boy had actually made a genuine joke. The two sat in silence for a while and Jou's mind wandered to all the work he had to make up from yesterday, suddenly Kaiba broke the silence and said,
“What's on your mind pup?” Jou blinked,
“Pardon?”
“You looked pretty deep in thought.” Kaiba said, shooting the blonde boy a quick look which held a flicker of amusement,
“Oh just thinking about the work I missed yesterday.” Jou said absent mindedly, but he sat up at Kaiba next, slightly hesitant, statement.
“Do you want to come over to the mansion tomorrow and I can help you with the stuff you missed if you want.”
“I…yeah that would be great.” Jou said, as Kaiba pulled up outside his house, he didn't wonder how the other teen knew where he lived but just accepted it as a Kaiba thing.
“Great. I'll see you at school tomorrow then.” Kaiba said, his tone oddly formal as though he wasn't sure he'd done the right thing.
“See ya.” Jou called as the brunette drove off. He wandered into his house as though unsure as to what had exactly just happened.
Would you swear
that you'll always be mine?
Or would you lie?
Would you run and hide?
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
I don't care...
You're here tonight.

Bakura stood in the middle of the pattern he'd created with the candles. The one nearest his right ankle was dangerously close to burning him but he didn't care, his mind was focused on the task of completing the spell. He was proud that he'd managed to pretend to be Ryou for almost two months while he searched for this spell, and now his efforts were being rewarded. Luckily the spell was quite simple he hadn't needed any particularly obscure components, most of it was herbs found in Ryou's garden. The only thing he'd had problems with was the animal sacrifice. The spell was almost complete now he'd finished burning the herbs, Bakura took up the rat that he'd been able to get hold of at the local pet store, swiftly and neatly he broke the neck so the creature died instantly, then with his sliver knife Bakura split the creature in half from the tip of its tail to the tips of its little pink nose. The smell of blood drifted up to Bakura's nose and he licked his lips slowly. Carefully working his way from the middle of the pattern to the outside Bakura let a few drops of blood fall on the candles, extinguishing them one by one. When that task was done Bakura threw the rat's carcass to one side and made his way back to the center of the candles. Standing there with his arms raised Bakura chanted,
Dii mighty dell'OH VI offro l'anima fresca, sento IL mio cry e libero le anime bloccate, noi repent verso l'esterno i sensi Ed IL cry per IL vostro perdono, ci gettiamo ci scoliamo sulla vostra misericordia e preghiamo.
After repeating the chat three times Bakura felt an unbearable pain rip its way through his body and he fell to his knees with a loud thud before passing out.
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.

Yugi lay in his bed excited at the prospect of seeing Malik tomorrow. After getting over the need to kill him and Yami the Egyptian boy had turned out to be a nice guy and Yugi had kept in touch with him. When Malik had mentioned his concerns to Yugi, Yami had instantly offered the idea that the boy should come for a visit, and Yugi was trembling with happiness he just knew that when the others got to know the blonde boy they'd be fine. Suddenly Yugi screamed, he felt as though someone had pored acid all over him and his skin was peeling itself off of his body. The small boy curled up into a ball of pain not hearing Yami's pained cry,
//YUGI!//
Oh, I just want to hold you.
I just want to hold you.
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
I don't care...
You're here tonight.
Malik paced his hotel room. He'd arrived early so he could surprise Yugi by turning up at Domino High tomorrow morning, he'd already checked with the school that he could attend there for a while and the head teacher had been surprisingly nice considering he was a teacher. Unfortunately Malik had forgotten the time difference between Japan and Egypt and consequently couldn't get to sleep,
“Stupid time lag.” He muttered, “Probably all I'll be able to do when I see the others tomorrow is snore at them.” Malik stilled as he felt a prickle of awareness at the back of his mind, nothing more happen and so the platinum haired boy resumed his pacing. “Stupid bloody mind, playing stupid bloody tricks.” Malik's lilac eyes widened as the first roll of pain washed over him, getting stronger with each wave. Malik's breathing became erratic, even having the Pharaohs memories carved into his back hadn't hurt this much. Malik flopped onto the bed as he passed out
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by your forever.
You can take my breath away.
I can be your hero.

A:N Well…urm not much to say onto the `bonus' thingy. Its kinda a interior monologue by Kaiba done in the 1st person. This is the first time I've ever attempted 1st person so I'm kinda nervous but oh well.
I stand by my bed, my fingertips resting gently on top of the cool silk. There's no point in me going to bed, my heads to busy spinning with thoughts of Jounouchi to let me drift off into sleep and even if I do manage to enter that blissful oblivion I'll just be haunted with images of my past, haunted by the sound of my own voice screaming, haunted by the sound of his voice, haunted by his face…Gozaburo. I shiver and purposefully move my thoughts back to the puppy, another individual that also makes my blood boil but these past two days I'm starting to think maybe the way he does it is good. I walk over to my mirror, I don't know what possessed me to invite the pup over tomorrow, maybe I'm finally getting past the idea that I shouldn't form attachments to anyone other than Mokuba. But saying that what makes me think that Jou would give me a chance, I'm tainted HE made sure of that…no mustn't think that, remember therapy training I paid enough for it. I am worth something and people will love me despite what happened and maybe, just maybe Jou can be the one to help me down that path. Maybe I will make a friend, maybe he will be my hero.
