Come What May

Ryou and Marik ran into the hospital's Emergency Ward waiting room followed by Bakura and Malik.  Ryou and Marik both had tears running down their faces as they ran up to the desk.

"My son is Aten Bakari Ishtar! Is he alright? Can I see him?"

The nurse turned to a doctor who disappeared and reappeared.  "We are still trying to get him stabilized."

Marik bit his lip. "How bad is he, doctor?"

"Your son's heart keeps failing.  We are having a difficult time keeping him stable."

Ryou gripped the counter tightly. "I have to see my son!"

"When we get him stable, I will come speak to you."

Bakura gripped Ryou's shoulders lightly. "Let's sit down, baby."

Bakura  helped Ryou to a chair and sat beside him.  Bakura cuddled the crying boy against him.  Marik leaned over and buried his face into his hands. "My little boy………my son……"

Malik cradled his yami against him.  Bakura removed his cell phone and called Seto.

//Seto Kaiba.//

"Moneybags, bring Joey and Hayden and come to the hospital."

//What's wrong?//

"The school just told us that Aten had a massive heart attack."

//…………….Tell me this is a sick joke.//

"No. The school said he collapsed in English class. You have to come, Seto."

//What is the prognosis?//

"They can't keep him alive long enough to know.  It doesn't look good. Bring Glenn and Yugi, too."

//What about Aria? Is she there?//

"She's still in school.  The principal told us that Aria would be brought here by Robbie's mother."

//Ok.  How is Ryou?//

"How would you feel if you just heard your only son had  a heart attack and the doctors couldn't  keep him alive for even five minutes at a time?"

//Okay, Bakura. I'll get Joey and Hayden. We'll be right there.//

Bakura closed his cell phone and sat beside Ryou, who had his arms wrapped around himself.

"Dear Gods, don't take my son away from me," Ryou whimpered.  Tears flooded down his cheek. "I don't want my son to die!"

Bakura wrapped his arms around Ryou. "Ryou, Ra will do what is best for Aten."

Ryou turned his head to Bakura. "I don't want him…..to die on me, Bakura. I can't bury my fifteen year old son!"

Doctor Zira entered the waiting room and Ryou jumped to his feet. "Ryou?"

"Yes? Yes?"

"We're having a difficult time keeping Aten's heart beating.  It is your choice."

Bakura stood up as he saw Ryou wavering.  Ryou's chest seized.  He felt his hikari go numb.  "What are you saying?"

Zira bit his lip. "We can keep trying, Ryou. The doctors are in there, trying as I speak. We're doing everything we can for your son.  It's your choice, Ryou.  Shall we try to resuscitate him the next time his heart stops?"

Ryou's eyes filled with tears. "How can you ask me to choose?  My son's life is at stake.  I don't want my son to die, Dr. Zira. Please."

Dr. Zira nodded. "Alright, Ryou.  I'll let you know of any improvements."

Ryou sat down, crying into Bakura's shoulder.  "My boy is going to die, Bakura!  He's going to die!"

Robbie, Miranda, and Aria ran into the waiting room.  Ryou saw his daughter enter and quickly ran to her, bringing her into his arms.

"My girl….my baby girl," Ryou whimpered.

Aria hugged her mother.  Ryou clutched onto her, afraid to let go of the only other child that he had to hold onto.

"Mother, how is he?" Aria asked him.

Ryou's lip trembled. "Doctor Zira just came out here telling me that they can't keep Aten's heart beating. The doctors want to give up on him."

Miranda brought Ryou into a hug. "I'm sorry, Ryou."

Ryou wept. "I don't want my little boy to die, Miranda."

Robbie went to the Reception Desk. "How is Aten Ishtar?"

The nurse stopped typing on the keyboard. "Aten Ishtar is still in surgery."

Robbie could hear the frantic discussions of the doctors behind the doors.  He could hear them trying electric shocks to get Aten's heart going.

"ATEN! DON'T DIE ON ME! PLEASE!"

Marik and Malik went to Robbie and pulled him back from the desk.

"Robbie, we know you are upset, but--."

Robbie sank to the floor, kneeling, and sobbing into his hands. "Aten, I love you! Please don't die on me!"

Silence.

Ryou's crying stopped. Miranda's eyes widened. Aria looked down at Robbie, her hair spiky and twitching. Bakura's jaw dropped. Malik and Marik's faces bore the signs of shock.

Marik kneeled in front of Robbie, clutching the Millennium Rod in his hand. "You what?"  Marik put the Millennium Rod under Robbie's chin.  "What did you just say, Morgan?"

Robbie looked up at Marik, his blue eyes sparkling with his tears.  "I love your son.  I love Aten with every fiber of my being!  Now he's going to die and I never told him how much I love him!"

Miranda released Ryou and both of the mothers advanced on Robbie kneeling on the floor. "Robbie?" Miranda asked. "Is this true?"

"Yes, Mom…I love Aten.  Deeply."

Ryou raised an eyebrow. "Why did you never tell us?"

Robbie cast his eyes down to the ground.  "I was afraid…I didn't know what anybody would say."

Aria stepped between the two mothers, her hair spiky.  She could feel her brother's body on the edge of death.  Her body attempted to transfer some of her energy onto him, but Aten's body was too weak to accept it. "I never knew you felt so deeply for my brother."

Robbie looked up at her. "Aria, can you see how much I love your brother when I look into your eyes?  Can you see how much it hurt for me to hold Aten's lifeless body in my arms?  Most importantly, can you see how meaningless my life would be without him?"

Aria narrowed his eyes, looking deep into Robbie's soul.  A piece of Robbie's soul was fading with every failed attempt to keep her brother alive.  Aria nodded. "Yes. I can.  You really do love my brother…..with your heart and soul." Aria suddenly started to waver as she lost her balance.

Miranda caught her and helped her over to the chair.  Aria gripped her chest.

Ryou jumped to his feet and rushed to his daughter. "Aria? Baby, are you okay?"

Aria clutched onto Miranda. "I can feel……Aten…..I can feel him die."

Ryou's color drained from his face as Bakura caught him. Aria's teeth clenched and her breathing became erratic.

Bakura gripped her hand. "Two halves of the same soul. Aria would feel Aten's death.  Aten would be able to feel Aria's death."

Miranda looked up at Bakura. "What?"

Bakura kept his eye on Aria. "Aria and Aten are two halves of one soul.  Aria is the Dark. She has strong, dark energy pulsing through her veins.  Aten is the Light. He is weaker."

Ryou took Aria's hand. "Please, angel, breathe!"

Aria took a sharp breath and her eyes opened wide. "My brother awakes!" The pain in her chest subsided.

A moment later, Dr. Zira emerged from the doors. "Ryou?"

Ryou held his breath. "Please tell me is my son going to be okay."

Zira took a deep breath. "We will discuss that after I get the results from the test back, Ryou.  Now, two of you can see Aten at a time.  He's very weak and isn't too aware of his surroundings."

Marik put his hand on Ryou's shoulder. "You go first, baby."

Ryou took a deep breath and nodded.

Zira lead Ryou and Bakura into the ICU. Bakura held his mate's hand as they walked downt he large hallway.  Ryou bit his lip nercously as they appraoched the room.

Zira opened the double doors and Ryou felt his heart sink at the sight of his son.

Aten was laying in the hospital, the monitors beeped as they recorded his heart rate. Aten's oxygen mask pumped Oxygen  into his lungs. His arm and hand were covered with IV's.  An IV line was placed in Aten's neck, trying to give medicines to him.

The boy's eyes opened weakly as his mother walked up to him.

Bakura stood on the other side of Aten and rubbed the teen's arm.

Ryou leaned down to Aten. "My baby boy...mommy's here."

Aten gave a little whimper.

"I know, honey..Shhh..." Ryou whispered, wiping a tear from his cheek.

Bakura brushed his fingers lightly though the teen's white and blond hair.

Aten's eyes remained ficed on his mother's face, his eyes were glassy and unfocused.

"Stay strong, baby. You'll be okay," Ryou said witha  forced smile. "You'll be okay," Ryou said as he touched his son's cheek lightly.  "My baby boy will be okay," Ryou repeated, trying to convince himself.

"RYou? We should go. Marik will want to see his son," Zira said.

Ryou looked down at his son. 'Aten, I'm going to let your father come in. I'll be back, baby."

Ryou left with Bakura's arm around is shoulder.  RYou returned to the waiting room and started crying.  Seto stood up and brought his friend into his arms. "I can't do anything for him, Seto...I....I feel so...helpless."

Seto kissed Ryou's forehead. "I know, angel."

Malik walked beside his yami down the long hallway. Marik gripped the Millennium Rod in his hand tightly, releasing tension through his crushing grip.

Malik walked into the ICU and saw Aten laying in bed, his chest barely rising as he breathed. Marik gripped onto his husband as he saw his son barely clinging to life.

"Aten Bakari....Ishtar," Marik muttered as his eyes scanned the limp body.

Aten opened his eyes and saw his father standing beside him. Aten struggled to lift his hand. His fingers trembled. "Daddy....."

"Just relax, son," Marik said taking his son's cold hand.

Malik rubbed Aten's arm. "Aten,  we're so glad to see you!"

Aten opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out.  His head fell back exhausted onto the pillow.

"Don't try to talk, son.  We know what you're going to say."

Malik looked up at his husband and felt Marik was fighting back his emotions with every fibre of his being.

Marik brushed Aten's hair behind his ear.  "You just get some rest, Aten. Don't worry about anything.  You just...relax."

Aten let out a little quiet whine.

"We love you, Aten," Marik said forcing a smile to comfort his son.

"L--Lov----Luff....you....daddy."

Marik leaned down and kissed his son on the forehead.  He closed his eyes and touched his forehead to his son's.  "My boy," Marik whispered quietly.  "I thought I lost you," the yami said as his voice cracked, his emotional barriers breaking down quickly. "I won't lose you, Aten....ever."

Malik walked around the bed to put his arm around his yami.

Zira looked at the clock: 4:00.  It had taken the team six hours to revive Aten to some point of stability.  Aten needed his rest and the last thing the boy needed was to see his parents becoming upset.  "Marik, it's time to go."

"Couple more minutes....Aten, I love you, son.  Your mother and I love you so much.  I wanted you to know that.  I'll be back tomorrow with a couple of your plushies and--."

"'Nanas....."

Malik smiled. "Aww....Aten, do you want us to bring Bananas tomorrow?"

"Want...Ba...nanas."

"Okay, son, we'll bring him tomorrow.  I have to go now. Who do you want to see next?"

Aten let out a sigh, his breath brushed coldly against Marik's cheek. "Robbie....."

"Okay, son....we'll let Robbie come in.  Sleep well, son."

Marik and Malik kissed Aten and walked out of the room with the doctor.

Robbie's POV

Never knew I could feel like this
Like I've never seen the sky before
I want to vanish inside your kiss
Every day I love more and more

I opened the door to Aten's hospital room.  Aten was hooked up to a heart monitor, an IV, and had an oxygen mask over his mouth.

It hurts to see him this way.  As I went through my day, my hands were shaking.

What if I lose Aten? What if Aten dies?  I would never have told him how I feel….how I really feel about him.

Listen to my heart
Can you hear it sings
Telling me to give you everything

Aten's POV

I took Robbie's hand weakly in my hands.  His hand feels  so heavy so suddenly.  With a great effort, I brought it to my lips and I kissed his hand.  His other hand brushed away a tear that was running down my cheek. His hand felt so warm, so comforting. His touch…….gentle.

I rested his hand over my heart which beats for him alone….nobody else.  Robbie's eyes closed tightly and he leaned forward, sobbing.  His head rested on my chest, bathing my hospital gown with his sorrow.  Each tear falling for me as he saw me like this….weak, tired…hanging onto life with only one thought in mind…….Robbie.  Holding onto life by a thread, my life was being sustained and made barely liveable only by a cheap piece of plastic pumping painkillers through my body.

Seasons may change
Winter to spring

His head lifted as he looked at me. "Aten……..please……Don't leave me.  I…I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have you."

I pressed his hand against my chest. I could even feel my irregular heartbeat. All I could pray for was to hear Robbie say three little words. I cannot leave him without knowing…..that he loved me.  I can't leave this  world until I hear that come from his beautiful lips.

Robbie………..please tell me………

But I love you until
The end of time

Robbie tilted my head to look at him.  With the mask on my face giving me oxygen, he couldn't kiss my lips.  Robbie leaned over and kissed me beneath my earlobe.  "I love you, Aten Bakari Ishtar…..with all my heart."

Come what may
Come what may
I will love you until my dying day

My eyes closed and he wiped a tear from my cheek.  I love you, too, Robbie.

"No matter what happens, Aten. I want you to know how I feel.  I love you, Aten.  I always want to be by your side.  I will always be there for you, Aten…because I love you more than life itself.  And that's the way it will always be for me. I promise ……to love you…..forever. I will love you until my dying day, Aten."

Suddenly the world seems
Such a perfect place

I clenched my eyes shut….he loves me.  He really loves me.  We both should have told each other earlier.

He loves me……….

I love him……..desperately.

I heard him sniffle and I took a deep breath. It felt like hot metal was being shoved into my chest.  It was painful to say the least. A sharp, stabbing pain spread through my body as my heart monitor skipped wildly.  Each breath was painful.

"Robbie," I whispered. "Please don't cry."

Robbie looked up at me with his blue eyes, sparkling from the tears. "How can I not?   You…almost died, Aten. I almost lost you."

Suddenly it moves with
Such a perfect grace
Suddenly my life
Doesn't seem such a waste

I remember before he came into my life.  I loved my fathers and my mother.

But our world revolves around you

And there's no mountain too high
No river too wide
Sing out this song
I'll be there by your side

Robbie looked down at me and stroked my cheek. "Aten, you're going to be ok…I am not going to leave you."

I clenched my teeth and closed my eyes tightly as another sharp stab of pain came from my chest.  Robbie grabbed my hand and held it to his lips.

"I'm here, Aten. I'm not leaving you."

I gripped his hand as tightly as I could. "Don't……leave……Robbie……pain…it hurts."

Robbie stroked my hair as he kissed my fingers.

Storm clouds may gather
And stars may collide
But I love you until
The end of time

When the pain finally melted into a morphine-induced haze, Robbie wiped my face with his shirt.  There were no towels in the room.

"Aten? Still with me?"

I slightly nodded with a great amount of effort.

"Robbie….don't cry. I don't want….to see…you in pain. I want you to be strong."

"Aten…..I love you so much.  I don't want to see you in pain. You are my everything."

Come what may
Come what may
I will love you until my dying day

Somehow I found the strength to lift my hand to my oxygen mask.  Robbie's eyes opened wide in amazement.  My hand reached to the back of the mask and I pulled it off of my face, ridding my lungs of oxygen.

"Aten?"

I stroked his cheek and I whispered through labored breath, "I want to feel you kiss me, Robbie."

Oh, come what may

Come what may

Robbie pressed his lips gently to mine as tears fell down both of our faces.  I cupped his face in my hands as we were locked in a passionate kiss.

I will love you
I will love you

My lungs started running out of air. My heart monitor raced.  My hands became weaker each second that I did not have my oxygen mask on my face.   He pulled back, noticing me gasping for oxygen.

I clutched my hand over my heart and smiled up at him. "I love you, Robbie."

Robbie struggled to smile and replaced the oxygen mask on my face.  He sat back down and buried his face in my chest, sobbing.

"I love you, too, Aten."

Suddenly the world seems
Such a perfect place

Everything that I ever wanted is right here…..

Robbie.

He's all I want….he's all I ever wanted in my life.  With Robbie, my life was perfect.  I ran my fingers through his dark hair and kissed the top of his skull.

"I will love you until I take my last breath, Robbie."

Robbie looked up at me, his eyes red and bloodshot. "Don't say that, Aten.  I don't want you to leave me."

Our eyes locked.  Both of us came close to losing each other today.  Neither one of us wanted to admit that.  It was too scary to think about.

He rest his head on my chest as we bathed in the comfort of each other's presence.

"I never will leave you……….my love," I whispered.

Come what may
Come what may
I will love you until my dying day

Robbie….I will love you until my dying day.

Normal POV

Robbie pulled a seat beside Aten's hospital bed. "I love you, Aten….and I'm not going to leave you."

Aten gave a whimper. "Love…you…"

Robbie leaned over and rest his head on Aten's chest and cried. "I couldn't bear to lose you."

Aten ran put his hand on Robbie's shoulder.  "Never…will…lose..me."

"I'm not leaving you, Aten…..I'll be right by your side…always."

Zira stepped up to Robbie. "Robbie, we should go."

"I'm not leaving Aten."

"You have to eat."

Robbie shook his head. "Aten is my concern.  I can't leave him. Please don't let me leave him."

Zira put his hand on Robbie's arm.  "Robbie, Aten will need his rest."

"I'll sleep in the waiting room.  I am not…leaving."

Zira sighed. "As you wish, Mr. Morgan."

Zira left and returned to the waiting room. "Mrs. Morgan, your son refuses to leave Aten's side."

Miranda crossed her arms in front of her and looked down. "If Robbie wants to stay…..I will not stop him.  I can't keep the boys apart."

Ryou sniffled as Yugi ran in with Glenn.  "Yugi!"

The short duelist hugged Ryou. "How is he?"

"He's alive…but….Zira barely saved him."

Yugi looked up at Zira. "What happened?"

"Aten had a massive heart attack.  Six hours in surgery barely saved him."

Seto grabbed Zira's coat. "You find him a heart now!  I don't care where you get it!"

Zira looked up at his boss. "Seto, let go of me.  Now."

Seto threw Zira back. "You find him a new god-damned heart or I will use yours as a replacement!"

"And who will put my heart in Aten's chest?"

"Watch it or I'll take your tongue out, too!"  Seto threatened.

Glenn put his hand on Seto's arm. "This is not helping, Mr. Kaiba, sir."

Seto growled. "It's helping me….but Aten needs a heart or he will die."

Aria wavered in the seat. "Mom? Dad? Unkie Seto?"

The three men turned their heads to see Aria nearly fall off her chair.

Bakura put his hand on his daughter and held her against his body.  "We need to get her home. She has to be tired and in pain from Aten's ordeal."

Ryou put his hand on Aria's forehead. "We have to get her home."

**********************************************

T he family returned home and Aria ran upstairs to her room.  She shut the door behind her and picked up her phone.  Through her tears, she had a difficult time dialing the phone.

[Hello?]

"Umi......I need you to come over here....please....We need to talk."

[Little Mermaid?!  I heard about Aten collapsing in English class today!  Is he okay?]

"Umi...it's all my fault Aten almost died!   Please, come over. I really need to speak to you!"

Umi ran into his room to pack.  [Okay, Aria.  Give me time.]

"Umi...can you ask your dad if you can stay here tonight?"

[Sure, mermaid. I can do that for you.]

"Thank you," she sobbed.

[Angel, it's okay. I'll be there.  Just stay where you are.]

"Umi?"

[Yes, Beautiful?]

"I...I really do love you, you know?"

[.........I'll be there, Aria.  Just take deep breaths, okay?]

"Okay."

[That's my girl.  Be right there.] Umi put the phone down and ran to his father, Mako, fishing on the side of the boat.

"Dad, I have to go to Aria's.  Can I stay there for the night? I'll be home tomorrow."

Mako grunted. "These fish are not biting today anyway, Little Minnow.  You may as well go to her house for dinner. The Sea is not being bountiful today."

Umi pat his father on the back. "Thanks, dad."

"Tell everyone I said 'Hello, my friends!'  And tell Ryou I hope Aten feels better."

Umi hugged his dad and ran to pack his bag.  Aria sound worried. It took alot to get Aria flustered.  It wasn't like her to cry, either.  The teen packed his overnight stuff and hurried to his girlfriend's house. It was a good jog away, but Umi enjoyed running.  He loved to run along the pier as a chibi and now as a teen.  Nothing was better than the salty air flying through the hair.  He was even part of Domino High's Track and Field team.

Umi arrived at Aria's house and Bakura opened the door. "Hello, Mr. Bakura...Hello, my daddy's friends!"

"Umi, this is not the best time," Bakura explained.

"Aria asked me to come over."

The white-haired yami's gaze shook Umi to the core, but to his surprise, the yami stepped aside. "She's upstairs.  No spawning...and I mean it this time, Tsunami."

"Yes, sir."

Umi ran upstairs and knocked on Aria's door.  Aria opened it up and threw herself into Umi's arms, sobbing.

"It's my fault! It's my fault!"

Umi kissed Aria's forehead. "Little Mermaid, how is this your fault?  You didn't give Aten that heart attack, did you?"

Aria nodded silently.

"Now, now...that's impossible. You couldn't have given Aten a heart attack."

Aria pulled Umi into her room and shut the door. "Umi, I need to tell you what happened."

Umi sat beside her on the bed and listened wide-eyed to what happened with Keith, Eric, Jason, and Andrew.  Umi's teeth clenched in fury as he listened to Aria speak about Keith forcing himself into her and Andrew's attempted rape of Aten.

When she was done, Umi brought her into his arms. "Little Mermaid....I'm so sorry."

"I never should have been so foolish!  I messed everything up!  My brother almost died....I dated a fucking loser.....and I lost you!  I was a stubborn little bitch."

Umi tilted Aria's head up. "Aria....you are not a bitch. And, yes...sometimes we have to learn lessons the hard way, but that was no way to learn that lesson.  Aria, you could never lose me, so don't even think that.  You'd have to do much worse for me to lose you."

Aria hugged her boyfriend tightly. "I love you, Umi!  Gods, I love you so much!"

Umi kissed her forehead. "You're my Angel of the Sea....I never want to lose you, mermaid."

Aria raised her head and planted a slow kiss on Umi's lips.  Her eyes closed tightly as Umi brushed his fingers lightly against her cheek. His hand went to her side and rubbed it slowly.

The girl smiled. "Thank you, Umi...thank you for forgiving me."

"When people love each other, Aria, that's what they do. Tonight, it will be just you and I.  I think there's one thing that you need more than anything else in the world."

Aria sniffled. "Pain medication?  The pain's starting to come back."

"You need an Umi Cuddle.  That's what you need."

Aria giggled. "Yeah, I could really go for one of those....and some Advil."

umi stood up. "I'll get that for you, Little Mermaid. You've had a long day. How do you feel?"

/Tired.....so......tired./

Aria wavered. "Aten's filtering into me again.....I'm really tired."

Umi pulled back the sheets to her bed. "You lay down. I'll get your Advil."

Umi left as Aria crawled under her sheets.  The boy ran down the stairs to where Bakura and Malik were watching the news.

Ryou and Marik had retreated to Ryou's bedroom.

Malik shifted uncomfortably in the chair.

"Just what are they doing up there that's making you shift?"

"Marik's letting it all out to Ryou.  You know how he hates to upset Ryou with how he feels."

Bakura took a deep breath. "I know how you feel.....I wish I could do something for Ryou....but there's not much other than be supportive."

[[Police are investigating a homicide in the downtown area of Domino.  A fifteen year old teen was found dead on the two hundred block of Cherry Blossom Road.  It appears as if some animal had chewed at the victim's neck.  Police suspect that this may be related to the string of homicides that have left at least fifteen gay teen boys dead in the past three months.  The police have yet to contact the owner of the apartment, Keith Howard.]]

Bakura gasped. 'WHAT THE HELL?!"

Malik turned to Bakura. "Thank Ra Aria is okay."

The white haired yami looked at the stairs. "I could have lost my daughter to that punk."

[[In other news, police have identified the suspect responsible for the Domino Museum break-in and the string of murders leaving a total of eight men dead and four women sexually assaulted.]]

Malik turned to Bakura. "When did that happen?! I don't remember that!"

Bakura crossed his arms and legs. "There was a sexual assault around the corner the other week.  A woman was walking home and some punk jumped out of the bushes and raped her.  That's why I get so worried when Aria goes out alone.  I don't want any one touching my baby girl like that.  The man who does, dies."

[[The suspect responsible for the Domino Museum Break-in and the string of murders has been identified as Malik Ishtar.]]
