Proposals

Umi's jaw dropped. “You're….pregnant? Again? How?”
Aria shrugged. “The last time I slept with any guy was when Keith…and Eric…and Jason…and…” Aria's voice died down into inaudible murmurs.
Umi grabbed Aria's shoulders and pulled her close to him.
“Umi…what should I do?”
Umi shrugged. “I don't know, Aria.”
The teen rested his head on her spiky white hair.
“Dad is going to freak….again. However, he's been really understanding since I lost the first baby.”
Umi sighed, trying to think of what to say that would help his girlfriend. “Aria, whatever you decide to do, you know I'll be there for you.”
Isis appeared at the door. “Congratulations, Aria.”
“Auntie Isis! You can tell the future. Will this baby survive?”
Isis blinked in silence as she tapped into the power of her Millennium Necklace. `I see an empty cradle…once occupied by a baby girl. The crib….is now silent. She will deliver….but….' Isis stopped. `Something is interfering with my vision….it's a powerful magic…..'
“Auntie Isis, please tell me. Will my baby live?”
Isis nodded slowly. “Yes, but my Necklace will not let me see more than that.” The Egyptian woman looked at Aria's stomach.
`I sense a dark presence…..dark magic…ancient magic…..' Her eyes widened. `Royal Magic! The pharaoh's presence is here.”
“Aria, may I touch your stomach?”
The girl shrugged. “Sure, but I'm sure you won't feel anything yet.”
Isis touched her belly. `I feel Royal Magic coming from her womb! This is unlike Shadow Magic, which all Millennium Items posses. This is magic is known by only the royal families of Egypt. Somehow, the pharaoh's magic resonates from her womb…..but how?'
“Aria, have you seen the pharaoh lately?”
Aria shook her head. “No, I haven't seen him in a long time.”
Isis looked at Aria's stomach. `Odion must know about this.'
Isis pulled her hand away from Aria. “Well, Aria, I must go.” The Egyptian woman hugged her niece and walked to Aten's bedroom.
Odion was sifting through Aten's paintings. “This child is a gifted artist….much to my surprise, considering his father doesn't have a drop of talent in his body.”
“Odion, you promised to behave and respect Marik. He is no longer the threat to my brother he once was.”
Odion closed his eyes. “I remain skeptical. However, there is an evil roaming this city right now. This danger means harm to our family.”
Isis crossed her arms in front of her protectively. “I sense a dark magic spell surrounding the King of Thieves' daughter. I cannot identify it precisely. All I can tell is that it is Royal Magic. Aria's pregnancy is doomed…..that is all I can tell.”
Odion released his hold on the paintings. “What if we give them their items, the Millennium Trident and the Scepter of Ra?”
“It is not time for the offspring to receive their items. Should they obtain them now, the pharaoh will surely stop at nothing to kill them both. Aten is too weak. Aria carries a child. Both are vulnerable. Maybe if we can find the pharaoh, we may stop his plans to destroy this family. That is, if we can find him. Before we have to leave for Egypt.”
Odion bowed. “Sister Isis, let me help. I am, and always shall be, your humble servant.”
“Thank you, Odion. I feel the pharaoh's presence even here. It is….unsettling.”

Seto leaned against the bars of his jail cell as he listened to his seven lawyers chatter in panic. Seto gripped the bars of his cell.
“One at a time, damn it! Stan, you first.”
The man nervously pushed his eyeglasses back onto his face as they slipped down his nose. “Mr. Kaiba, the police have confiscated your personal files and are examining them for…illegal activities.”
“Which files? The ones in my desk?”
Another lawyer nodded to confirm his suspicions. “Yes, sir. Even the ones in your filing cabinet. They are examining every scrap of paper for anything that they might use to keep you here.”
Seto shrugged and chuckled. “You fools! They're not going to find anything.”
“What if they find about your `buy-outs' of Duelers Inc and Duel Tech?”
“Mr. Kaiba, we have to come up with a good defense. The courts won't take bribe money this time!”
Seto held up his hand. “Xavier, don't worry about it.”
“But, your files--!”
“Do you really believe for one second that I would leave my real files where they could be grabbed by anyone and examined? Do you honestly think that I would be so stupid? The files they took are my `Dummy Files'. They contain nothing but legal documentation of every transaction KaibaCorp has made with other companies. No murders. No lump sums of money transactions. No arson.”
The lawyers exchanged glances. “Won't they know they're fake files?”
“I just told you! They are legal documents! Everything was done legally in regards to those files. My illegal files are hidden in a secret panel of my desk and my bedroom. They aren't going to find them unless they take an axe to the wall….which I highly doubt they will.”
The lawyers exchanged more worried glances.
“Like we said, sir, they want to find a way to keep you here for a very long time. We can't throw money at this issue.”
Seto narrowed his eyes. “Find a judge on our payroll.”
“Judge Tokowski wants another raise in the price.”
Seto rolled his eyes. “Since when is $1.4 million not good enough for anyone?”
“Because this situation is flying out of control, he wants more to get you off the hook.”
“Okay…..how much is he asking?”
One man looked into his file folder. “Tokowski is asking for $10 million---.”
Seto's jaw dropped. `TEN MILLION?! That's insanity! He can kiss my ass for ten million dollars. That sum of money is too traceable. Find someone else.”
“Yes, Mr. Kaiba.”
*************************************
Sgt. Barnes flipped through another file at his desk. Everything was legal. Nothing was found. Sgt. Barnes grabbed his cigarette and inhaled.
“I've got to find someway to keep this faggot in here for life! But I can't find anything!”
Sgt. Barnes picked up the phone. “Jerry…it's me.”
[Does this have to do with our…support group?]
“Yes…can you talk freely?”
[No. One minute.] The frying of a grill sounded in the background. [Marik, can you watch these for me? I have a phone call!]….[Yes, what is it?]
“I can't find anything illegal on this little fucker. There's nothing illegal in any of these documents and if we go to court, we have to provide truthful documentation.”
[That sucks. This is Seto Kaiba. He's dirtier than dirt.]
“I know. If I can't find something on this little ass-licker, I'll tell you what. We'll stage a ruse to get him to our gathering. If the law doesn't execute him, we'll do the honors.”
The man on the other end of the phone laughed. [Give the little faggot a dirt nap, hmm? He deserves worse than a dirt nap. He's going to burn in hell.]
“We'll have a little fun with Kaiba first….like we did with the other teenage boys we killed. It will be a group effort, you know? Then we'll shoot him in the back of the head and leave him. His gay ass will be dead.”
[Sounds like a plan, Barnes.]
“Think of it, Jerry. If we can execute Seto Kaiba, this city will be rid of one of the richest queers in the city!” Barnes grinned. “We're going to kill Seto Kaiba.”
[Sounds like a plan…..a fun plan! Count me in.]
The door to the precinct opened and a average-sized duelist walked in. “I have to go, Jerry. I'll talk to you later.”
[Okay, Barnes. See you tonight.]
“Can I help you?” Barnes asked as he hung up the phone.
“I'd like to see Seto Kaiba, please.”
Barnes stood up and walked the duelist to the holding cells. “You suits clear out. Kaiba has a visitor.”
Seto's eyes widened. “Yugi!”
The lawyers cleared out and Barnes shut the door behind Yugi.
Seto smiled. “Yugi, I'm so glad to see you!”
Yugi looked up at Seto with a sad face. “Why, Seto? Why did you do this to Glenn and I?”
Seto's smile faded. “Yugi, I would not do that to you. You are my friend.”
“Are you really my friend?”
Seto nodded. “Yes, Yugi. Please believe me. I never wanted to hurt you.”
“So you busted up my shop and beat up Glenn?! You never wanted to hurt me?! Guess what, Kaiba? You did. You hurt me badly.”
Seto lowered his head. “I never beat up Glenn. I never busted your shop.”
Yugi pointed an accusing finger at Seto. “You are a dirty liar! You were a liar in the past! You will always be a liar! You've always used money and power to get what you want, even at Duelist Kingdom!”
“Yugi, please listen---.”
“I'm sick of listening to you! Because of you, Glenn lost part of his hearing! Are you going to attack Otogi next? He wouldn't hurt a fly, but I'm sure you'll break him in two! All for the sake of money and superiority! You know he won't defend himself against you!”
Seto shook his head. “I would never hurt Otogi, Yugi!”
“You were planning it, though! How could you attack me and not attack Otogi?! It makes no sense! Seto Kaiba, I hope you fry in the chair!”
Seto reached through the bars, his eyes threatening to flood with tears. “Yugi, please, I didn't do this to you! I care for you! You are my friend!”
“Well, guess what, Seto? I'M NOT YOURS ANYMORE!”
Yugi turned to leave and Seto continued to reach out of the jail cell.
“Yugi! Don't leave me here! Please!”
Seto slid down the bars of the jail cell as Yugi left. “Don't leave me……Yugi. Please.”
Seto fell to his knees in front of the cold bars. “Don't leave.”
The CEO buried his face in his hands and sobbed. “Yugi….”
*********************************************
Yami grinned as he walked through the throngs of people. `Seto's friendship with Yugi is on uncertain terms now…Seto will pay dearly for his betrayal five thousand years ago….The next question should be…whom shall my next visitor be? Hmm…I did mention Otogi. Maybe I should give him a little visit…or rather, Tristan should give him a visit. The media will eat this up. `Seto Kaiba arranges assault from behind bars.' Priceless.''
Yami walked into an alley and crossed his arms. “Power of the Millennium Puzzle, alter my form.”
Tristan emerged from the alley. He walked towards Dungeon Dice Monsters Headquarters. Above the entrance, two large metallic dice were standing.
Tristan stopped as he saw Isis and Odion standing in front of the doors. “Oh! Hi, Isis! Hi, Odion!”
The Egyptian duo narrowed their eyes. “Hello…pharaoh.”
Tristan laughed. “I'm not the pharaoh! I'm Tristan! It's me, Isis!”
“I think not,” the woman said calmly.
Tristan chuckled uncomfortably. “I have to see Otogi, guys. I'll come over and have dinner with you guys later.”
Odion stepped in his way. “You shall not pass.”
Tristan stepped back and growled. “Let me pass.”
“You will not harm Otogi Ryuugi, pharaoh,” Isis said as her Necklace glowed. “If you enter this building, Otogi will die by your hand. We will not allow any more bloodshed by you.”
Tristan crossed his arms and his appearance returned to Yami.
“Don't stand in my way, Odion!” Yami threatened. I care not if your family has guarded my tomb! You are the Pharaoh's Servant! Now…step aside!”
Isis stood beside Odion. “We cannot allow you to pass, Yami. Stop the bloodshed. Please.”
“Why should I? I have lost everything because of your family and the Itemri family!”
Odion narrowed his eyes. “Your fall from grace was your own issues. The Itemri Family and the Ishtar Family did nothing wrong.”
“My pharaoh, you have changed from our time together in Battle City. I can sense your magic on Aria, Yami. What did you do to her?”
“That is none of your concern, Isis!”
Isis glared at Yami. “She is my niece. She IS my concern whether you want to hear it or not. What did you to do her womb?”
Yami crossed his arms. “She may be your niece, but she is vicious, Isis.”
“So, by your logic, my nephew…my fifteen year old dying nephew….is also vicious.”
“I need not validate my reason to either of you.”
Isis and Odion exchanged glances. “Yami, you have exploited the Ishtar family for thousands of years. We have guarded your tomb with loyalty. Would you betray hundreds of generations of loyal servitude? Do you know how many people wasted their lives in that dark, moldy tomb waiting for your return? Would you betray them?”
Yami's amethyst eyes looked down at the two Ishtars. “Yes.”
Odion growled. “MASTER MALIK SUFFERED FOR YOU! HUNDREDS OF GENERATIONS SUFFERED BECAUSE OF YOU! HOW DARE YOU TURN YOUR BACK ON THEM!”
Yami snickered. “Those people are dust now, Odion. Malik is no different from the other Ishtars in the past. He'll die and turn to dust. And finally….Aten will die…and the family line will die. The Ishtar Family Blood Line dies when Aten takes his last breath. I doubt Aten will ever father a child by any woman. And if my plan works, the Itemri Family Blood Line will also die with Aria. At the rate she's going, she won't have any live offspring. I already heard she lost one child.”
Isis narrowed her eyes. “This is unacceptable! You are insane! You take pleasure in ruining the lives of the living. And now you are playing with the lives of the unborn! What kind of a man are you?”
“The last person I need advice from is one who has lived in a tomb for most of her life.”
Odion growled. “We had no choice but to guard your tomb! We were given no choice in the matter!”
Yami scowled. “You served your purpose. I have no need of you or the Ishtar Family.”
Isis stepped up to the former pharaoh. “What you have done is inexcusable! We have been loyal to you! And you stab us in the back!”
“I've heard that speech before, woman. It bores me.”
Isis' eyes looked the pharaoh up and down. “You are no pharaoh….you are a demon who must be stopped.”
“The only demons around here are the Ishtar family. I have no further need of your petty service.”
Isis narrowed her eyes and slapped the pharaoh across the face. “Leave our family in peace…..our service in your name ends now.”
Yami held his cheek. “No woman slaps the pharaoh!”
Yami raised his hand, but Odion stepped in the way and blocked his attack with his arm. With a quick fist, Odion punched Yami in the stomach, making the pharaoh fall on his knees, coughing.
“Leave Master Malik alone.”
Isis looked down at Yami. “Stay away from my niece and her child.”
Yami watched the two Egyptians walk away. `You won't get away with this….mark my words.'
*************************
Aten gave a tired yawn as his eyes started to close. Robbie sat in the chair beside the bed reading his German textbook.
He heard someone knock at the door and he tensed. Aten's eyes shot open wide.
“Aten?” Dr. Chapman peeked his head inside.
“Dr. Chapman? What are you doing here?”
“I came to see Aten….and you.”
Robbie's eyes widened. “Why me?”
“Robert, can I see you in the hall?”
“Yeah…sure.” Robbie reluctantly put down his German textbook and stepped into the hall.
“Mr. Morgan, are you still here?”
Robbie swallowed hard. “I was going to go home tonight…I promise.”
“Robbie, you need rest. Go home, Robbie. You look drained.”
Robbie shifted uncomfortably on his feet. “But….”
“Aten will be fine. You can come back tomorrow. You want him to get his rest, don't you?”
Robbie sighed. “Yes, I do.”
Chapman put a soothing hand on Robbie's shoulder. “Go home, Robbie. Get some much-needed rest.”
“Okay….I guess.”
Robbie returned to the room and packed his books.
“Robbie….? Where are you going?” The tired teen in the bed moaned.
“Aten, I really should go home to mom. Besides, I have some books at home that I need to help me with my German homework and science.”
Aten reached out. “I'll miss you, Robbie.”
Robbie leaned down and hugged Aten. “I'll be back tomorrow, Aten. You get some sleep.”
“Kiss me before you go.”
Aten pressed his lips to Robbie's as they kissed. The Egyptian's soft hands brushed across Robbie's cheek.
“Goodnight, Robbie.”
“Goodnight, Aten. Pleasant dreams.”

Robbie's POV
Dr. Chapman might be right. I haven't left Aten's side at all hardly.
Maybe now…
Maybe now is the time to ask Marik….the question.
There's just one problem…..
How do I ask him if I can marry his only son?
Maybe if I think about it on the way, it might be a little easier when I get there.
Let's see….'Mr. Ishtar... no that's Marik. `Mr. Yami Ishtar'..
Wait, that doesn't sound right either.
`Mr. Yami Marik Ishtar?'
Oh hell, what do I call him?!!!
Why couldn't this be easier than it is?
************************
Robbie stood outside the door of the Ishtar-itemri home. For the first time in his life, he was afraid to open the door. He reached to knock on the door and pulled his arm away quickly. He turned away from the door and looked at the lawn.
Aten and himself had spent many hours playing on the grass, tickling each other, chasing each other, and building snow men in the winter.

*****Flashback******
“Come and tatch, me, Wobbie!” Chibi Aten cried happily as he called to Robbie.
“I'm chasing you! I'm gonna get you, Aten!” Chibi Robbie called out as he limped after Aten.
Aten laughed as Robbie tackled him to the ground. “You tatched me!”
Robbie laughed as he looked down at his friend. “It's your turn, Aten!”
Aten rose to his feet and let out a little squeal as he chased Chibi Robbie around the yard.
**************
`This is it, Robbie. He'll either say yes or no.' Robbie bit his lip nervously. `What if Marik says no? What do I have to offer Aten? How can I use words to describe what I feel for his son? I may be good at English Class, but all the words fail me right now.'
Robbie took another deep breath and knocked on the door.
Marik opened the door. “Robert? Robbie, what's wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong, Marik. But…umm…can I talk to you? Alone?”
Marik looked down and saw the teen's knees shaking. “Come in, Robbie.”
Robbie entered the house slowly as Marik shut the door behind him.
“What do you need to talk about, Robbie?”
Robbie sat down on the couch and folded his hands. “Aten.”
Marik sighed and lowered his head. He sat beside the teen and leaned forward. “I'm very worried about my son. I came very close to losing him.”
Robbie nodded. “I know. I came close to losing him, too. So close…it's scary.”
Marik turned his head to Robbie and raised his eyebrow. “What is it that you came for, Robbie?”
Robbie took a deep breath. “Marik….I need to ask you a serious question. I don't know quite how to ask it. I've been rehearsing this for a month already. I want it to be right.”
“Just say it, Robbie.”
Robbie took another deep breath. “I love your son, Marik. You know that already. I don't know how or why, but I love him more than anything else in this world.”
“That is easily seen, Robert.”
“Marik….I…” Robbie reached into his pocket and withdrew the velvet box. He opened the box and revealed the two engagement rings. “Marik, I would like permission to give a marriage proposal to your son, Aten.”
