The Eye of Ra

Aten picked up the light box and looked around at the room. He heaved a sigh, excited to begin his new married life with his new husband and somewhat afraid for leaving the security that his parents had given him all his life.
“Goodbye, room,” the teen said as he turned away.
“Aten?” a tiny voice called behind him.
He turned and saw Aria behind him. “Aria, what's wrong?”
“Do…do you need help? I don't want you to strain yourself.”
“I'm fine, sister. I can carry this myself.” Aria shifted uncomfortably. “Besides, you were up early for your wedding. I sure could use a nap soon,” the teen yawned tiredly.
“Did you get everything?”
Aten put down the light box of paints and brushes. “Yeah, I left some stuff here. Mother told me to leave some stuff in case I wanted to come home and visit for a night.”
Aria bit her lip nervously. “I see. You're probably tired so…”
“What's on your mind?”
Aria grabbed Aten's shirt. “I NEED to talk to you!”
Aten swallowed hard. “Okay! Okay! Don't rip my shirt!” Aten picked up the box and carried it into Aria's room.
In the corner of the room, Kailani's cradle and toys were still standing idle.
`I thought she put those away,' Aten thought.
“Where's Umi?”
“I sent him out to get grapefruit and peanut butter.”
Aten's nose wrinkled. “Gross.”
Aria buried her face in her hands and sobbed. “Oh, Aten!”
`I'm an idiot,' he thought, chiding himself for making his sister cry.
“Sister, I'm so sorry!” he exclaimed. He put his arm around her and kissed her cheek. The Egyptian sat beside her. “That was insensitive of me.”
“Aten, I don't think I can do this anymore. I don't want to lose another like Kailani!”
Aten raised his eyebrow. “Another---?”
“Another baby! I can't believe I'm pregnant again!”
Aten's jaw dropped. `What? Does she get pregnant every time she and Umi have sex?! Sweet Isis!'
“Again?”
“AGAIN!”
Aten held onto her tighter. “So quickly after Kailani?”
Aria sniffled. “What do I do?”
“First thing, tell mother. He has to know.”
“I'm going to lose another baby to Yami's curse!”
Aten raised his eyebrow. “What?”
“Yami said he put a curse on me that I could never bear a living child. I tried to fight the urge to sleep with Umi, knowing that I might get pregnant again. I didn't want to do this again! I couldn't help myself, Aten….something made me sleep with Umi.” She shook her head. “I just couldn't stop myself.”
Aten held her hand. “Do you want me to be there when you tell them?”
Aria looked up at her brother with large brown eyes. “Umi will be here with me, Aten. I….I don't want to keep you away from Robbie. You look tired.”
Aten yawned again. “Yeah, well, I took my medicine, so I should be okay….Besides, this limp from the wedding night will disappear in a few days.”
Aria's eyes narrowed. “He didn't hurt you, did he?”
“No! No, he didn't. It's just….It's been a few years, you know.”
Aria lowered her head. “Yes….I remember how I felt that night….and last night.”
“I tried to behave. I tried to block you. Did it work?”
Aria smiled faintly. “No.”
The boy sighed. “Sorry, sister.”
“I'm just glad that you weren't hurt, Aten. I never want to see Robbie hurt you.”
“He wouldn't hurt me….not intentionally, anyway.”
Aten grabbed the box of art supplies. “I had better go. Robbie's cleaning up the bed so I can get some sleep before dinner.”
Aria turned and hugged her brother tightly. She rested her head on his shoulders. “I love you, brother.”
Aten kissed her cheek. “I'm here to help you when needed, sister. You know I love you, too.” Aten snickered. “Like mother always said…we're two halves of one soul…how could we not be close?”
“Truth.”
Aten yawned again. “I had better get home before I start sleeping on the concrete outside. Love you, sister, bye!”
Aten opened the door and knocked into Umi. “Hi, Umi! Back so soon?”
The blue-haired boy smiled. “Yup! I also picked up some tuna for my mermaid!”
“She'll like that. Umi, you should sit down and talk to Aria. She has something very important to say.”
“Oh? Really? Okay. Did you get everything you need?”
Aten nodded. “Yeah, I hope I didn't forget anything.”
“See you around, Ishtar!”
Aten walked down the steps and put the box of supplies down. “I'm ready to go to Robbie's!”
Malik walked over to Aten. “Aten, you always know you have a home here. You're always welcome.”
Aten hugged Malik. “I know. Thank you.”
Marik walked towards his son and held him by the arms. “Son….you must never forget that your father loves you very much. Your mother and I have done our very best to show you love and provide for you the best way we knew how. It's going to be hard to see you walk out of that door today, Aten.” Marik cupped Aten's cheek in his hands. “I love you, boy……you're still my baby boy….even though…you're a married man. Just remember what I taught you, son….Never Forget Who You Are…..Always Follow Your Heart…..and if you're going to tie Robbie up, make sure you don't leave rope marks.”
Aten chuckled. “Way to go, dad….ruin the mood.”
Marik grabbed Aten's Silver Millennium Rod and handed it to his son. “And Never Leave Your Rod Behind. You never know when it will come in handy.”
Aten nodded and smiled. “Very true. What are us Ishtars without our Rods, huh?”
Marik's face beamed with fatherly pride. “That's my boy! Such an Ishtar! It's not hard to see you have Ishtar blood running through your veins.”
Bakura snickered. “We knew he was an Ishtar twelve hours after he was born, Marik! He was sucking on the Millennium Rod and covered it in chibi drool!”
“Oh yeah, Itemri? Well, Aria covered the Millennium Ring in chibi drool when she used it as her own personal teething ring!”
“Well, she didn't WANT to use the teething rings we bought her! She liked the Millennium Ring instead….hence the chibi indentations on the Ring.”
Ryou stepped between the arguing yamis. “That doesn't matter now, guys. What matters is that our Aten is going out there now.” Ryou gave his son a smile and a hug. “I'm proud of you, Aten. I love you so much! It's so hard to see you go.”
“I know, mother. It's hard, but…..I want to be with Robbie.”
Ryou struggled to smile. “I know, angel. But understand that if you ever want to return home, you will always have a place here.”
“I know, mother. Thank you.” Aten kissed Ryou's cheek. “I better be going.”
“Did you get everything from upstairs?” Ryou asked.
“Yeah, I'm pretty sure I got everything. If I forgot something, just call me and I'll come over. Bye!”
Aten left the house and stopped as the door shut behind him. He heard Ryou's light sniffles from behind the door.
`Poor mother…..we'll get used to this arrangement in time. It's going to be weird not to go home every night.'
Aten walked to Robbie's house and saw the contractors beginning to construct the addition onto the back of the Morgan's home.
He entered and slowly climbed the stairs to Robbie's room.
“I've got the bed all ready for you, Aten.”
Aten put the box of paints and brushes on the floor and fell into the bed weakly. His eyes blinked tiredly. “So tired….”
“Aww….Aten's tired.”
Robbie moved beside Aten on the bed and ran his fingers through the white and blond hair. A quiet whimper escaped the Egyptian teen as he laid face-down on the bed.
The purple and brown eye struggled to remain open, but soon lost the battle under the calm, peaceful hand of Robbie.
****************************
Aria sat at the kitchen table nervously. The girl bit her lip, wondering how her parents would react to this new pregnancy.
Umi sat beside her holding her hand. “Aria, I'm with you through this. I won't let anything happen to you.”
“I wonder what my father's going to say.”
Umi squeezed her hand lightly. “If he sends you to the Shadow Realm, at least you can get yourself out.”
Aria sighed. “You're right.”
“Cheer up, angel,” he said kissing her cheek.
Ryou and Bakura walked in and sat down. “Is everything okay, Aria? You look…pale,” her mother commented.
Marik and Malik sauntered into the room to join the Itemris. “What's up, Chibi Yami?”
Aria swallowed hard. Her jaw dropped to speak, but nothing came out.
“Aria, we won't be angry. What do you want to say?” her father asked.
“I…..I'm…”
“Take a deep breath,” Malik suggested.
Umi rubbed her hand. “Guys…Aria's pregnant…..again.”
The four men's eyes widened.
Marik snickered. “Damn, Tsunami! You waste no time, do you?”
“Marik, please,” Ryou said. “Honey, how is that possible? Your body is still recovering from….oh dear.”
“Did you test for it?” Bakura asked.
Aria lowered her head. “I missed my period….and I even went to Zira behind you to be tested for it. I'm sorry.”
Bakura narrowed his eyes, but Ryou put a hand on his arm.
“Honey, you know you can trust us with anything. There's no need to hide anything or fear that you will get in trouble. We want to let you know you can trust us, baby girl.”
Aria sniffled. “I was afraid at daddy yelling to me again.”
Bakura's anger quickly melted. “Oh, Aria…I didn't mean to yell at you that time. I was an ass when I did that.”
Marik nodded. “See, Aria, your father was being an assHOLE…rather than just a regular hot ass.”
“Watch it, Ishtar!”
“Or what?!”
“Or we'll settle this the old-fashioned way…in the bedroom!”
Aria shook her head. “How come every argument with you two ends in the bedroom and a shaky chandelier over our heads?”
Bakura and Marik shrugged. “It's more fun that way.”
Ryou turned to his husband. “This is serious, yami! What about Yami's curse?”
Malik slammed his fist on the table. “Damn Yami for burning that library!”
Bakura returned to his seat. “You and Maxine were lucky enough to escape intact.”
“Aria, we'll make sure that you are taken care of. When you're at school, we'll watch the baby.”
Marik leaned against the seat. “Looks like it's overtime for me at Captain Smiley Buns….”
“I intend on getting a job, too, Marik. I'll just work part time to help.”
“You sure, Tsunami?”
Umi nodded. “When I promised to Bakura that I would take care of Aria, I meant it. She's my responsibility and I love her very much.”
Aria smiled and hugged her new husband. “Oh, Umi!”
Bakura growled. “How are we going to break that curse? If we don't do something about it fast, this baby won't have a chance of survival.”
Marik growled. “Looks like we have to have a few words with that fucking pharaoh again.”
Malik's eyes snapped open. “WORDS!”
Bakura and Marik turned towards the Egyptian hikari. “What?”
“Don't you get it? We've been looking for a chant to break the spell! Maybe this curst cannot be broken by words?”
Ryou scratched his hair. “What are you getting at? Don't follow.”
“What were the pharaohs given when they died?”
Bakura growled. “A whole bunch of shit that they'd use in the afterlife.”
“That's right!”
Marik raised an eyebrow. “Shit?”
“No! Objects! Objects they would need in the Underworld…Objects to honor the gods…and objects for a safe journey! On their Journey to Paradise, their belongings went with them!”
Marik crossed his arms. “But they were buried with spells, too.”
“Yes! True! But the pharaoh's objects include the papyrus on which those spells and incantations were written! If words can't be found to break the curse, maybe Aria needs a good luck charm!”
Bakura growled. “Are you hearing how ridiculous you sound?”
“I'm not bull-shitting you! Will someone please listen to me?” Malik growled in frustration.
“Hikari Ishtar, no object is going to break the cycle of Royal Magic.”
Malik stared Bakura down. “Listen to me! It's worth a shot, isn't it? It's not like we have a lot of options here.”
Bakura sat back in his seat. “Very well. Fine.”
“Be right back!” Malik scurried away.
“Hmph…I hope your husband knows what he's doing, Marik.”
“If there's one thing we Ishtars know, it's Royal Magic. It's a tempermental magic, for certain. Ordinarily chants can break the seal of Royal Magic. Though even I question Malik's theory. He believes he's right…and he is definitely right in saying our time and Aria's time is growing short.”
Bakura crossed his legs. “If I lose Aria, Ishtar, I promise you Hell on Earth…and not the fun, sexy Hell that you know.”
Ryou put a hand on Bakura's shoulder. “Let's give Malik a chance, love.”
Malik returned to the room with a small wooden box. “Aria, I'm going to give this to you.” The Egyptian put the box on the table and opened it. A bright gold necklace with the Eye Of Ra laid inside. “This…belonged to….my mother, Aria. Isis kept it safe in this box and entrusted it to my care.”
“But…how is that going to keep my baby alive?”
Malik gently lifted the necklace from the box. “She put this around my sister's neck before receiving the Millennium Necklace. Father told her to remove the necklace and he clasped the Necklace around my sister's neck like a noose.” Malik's fist clenched. “My sister never had the chance to fight him. After she received the Necklace, she put this in the box. This necklace has been passed down through every Ishtar generation. It was said to have been dipped in the Nile and blessed by the High Priest Haji….before High Priest Seth. My mother said it would keep evil demons and spirits away from the pharaoh's tomb.”
Malik unfastened the clip and laced it around Aria's neck.
“Take good care of this, Aria. I know it will bring you good luck.”
Aria hugged Malik tightly. “Thank you, Malik! Thank you so much…I hope this works.”
Malik hugged her tightly and pet her spiky white hair. “We all hope it works, Aria.”
Ryou stood up and hugged his daughter.
The blond yami looked down, missing Aten's presence. “I better go see if Aten forgot something upstairs.”
“Ishtar?”
“I'm okay, Itemri…just…let me see my son's room….alone.”
**************************
Aten and Robbie sat outside letting the warm breeze run through their hair. Aten laid with his head on Robbie's lap as they looked up at the red sky. The sun had begun to set, making the sky appear as if it were in flames.
Robbie sighed with a smile. “We leave for Cancun in a couple of days. Excited?”
Aten nodded. “It's going to be great! Just the two of us. Do you think you'll get tired of me?”
“Tired of you? Ha! It ain't gonna happen, Aten.”
Aten snickered. “Ah, give it time.”
“It's gonna be great! Sun….surf….beach….”
“A moonlight walk on the beach…..maybe even do some skinny-dipping in the ocean.”
Robbie laughed. “Sounds like a plan.”
Aten sat up and brought his knees up to his chin. “I can't wait.”

Meanwhile inside the kitchen….
Daniel entered the kitchen and took a deep breath. “Now THAT'S what spaghetti sauce is supposed to smell like!”
Miranda chuckled. “It's been a long time since you've had home cookin'. I figured we'd have spaghetti tonight and some chicken parmasean tomorrow. What do you think?”
Daniel walked behind his wife and hugged her from behind. “Sounds….delicious.”
Daniel kissed the side of Miranda's neck. “I missed you at sea. Terribly.”
“I missed you, too. Have you seen the boys?”
A happy squeal sounded in the back yard.
“I take it that's them.”
Daniel walked to the window and saw Aten and Robbie rough-housing out back. Aten straddled Robbie's hips and was tickling his husband.
“Aten! I give up! Uncle! Uncle!” Robbie screamed.
“Not until you say it! Say it!”
Tears came out of Robbie's eyes. “I won't say it!”
Daniel shook his head. “They're wrestling again.”
“Oh, they're only playing, Daniel.”
Daniel watched the two boys wrestle in the back yard. All of a sudden the wrestling stopped and Aten leaned down and kissed Robbie slowly on the lips. Robbie reached up and caressed Aten's face and ran his hands over Aten's arms.
Daniel shook his head. “It's hard to believe.”
“What is?”
“I…I never thought Robbie would end up…gay. It's kind of a shock.”
Miranda shrugged. “Not on my end…but it took some used to getting used to the idea.”
Daniel watched Aten break the kiss and hug his new husband with a happy sigh.
“Daniel, what are you thinking?”
Daniel shrugged. “I love our son, Miranda. I don't disagree with this…I like Aten. He's a good kid. I'm just glad to see Robbie happy.”
“That's what matters, Daniel. I wouldn't have it any other way. Besides….Aten deserves some happiness.”
“Robbie called me up at sea when Aten had his heart attack. Does he really only have five years left?”
Miranda nodded. “Yeah….I don't know how Robbie's going to handle that. He's very upset.”
Daniel sighed. “Well, he's always been our Brave Little Soldier. Are we prepared to care for him?”
“Well, Aten paints when he's not being homeschooled. His tutor will be coming over here while Robbie's at school.”
“He can't go to school either?”
Miranda shook her head. “No, his heart condition limits his activity a lot. You should see him getting out of breath taking a few steps up the stairs….even with physical therapy. He's doing better than he was before. Robbie was terrified at the thought of losing Aten.”
Daniel watched Aten's hand flutter under Robbie's shirt as the Egyptian kissed Robbie's neck.
“I'd better call them in for dinner before they start going all the way in the back yard.”
Miranda snickered. “That's something Marik would say.”
Daniel opened the door. “Boys! Time for dinner soon!”
Aten grinned. “Mmm…mom's cooking! Come on, Robbie!”
Aten jumped to his feet and helped Robbie to stand up. Robbie hobbled on his cane back to the house.
Daniel watched his son use the cane to walk.
“Thanks, dad!” Robbie said with a smile.
Daniel closed the door behind Robbie. “So much has changed since I've left….at least I get to stay here and spend time with my family.”
Miranda smiled. “It's good to have you back, Daniel.”
The man hugged Miranda from behind. “It's great to be home with my family.”
****************************
Marik left the room quietly and ascended the stairs. “It feels so…empty here without my boy.”
He entered Aten's room and looked outside the window. Sunset was beginning.
Marik looked around at some pictures that Aten left behind. Marik picked up one picture. Aten was in the third grade and hugging his monkey plushie.
The blond yami sighed and looked at the empty corner where Aten had placed his finished canvases.
“Aten….you're not even gone for one night…and I miss you already.”
The father walked sadly to the bed and sat down. As he sat down, he kicked something under the bed.
“What the---?”
Marik got on his hands and knees. He reached under the bed and pulled out what he had accidentally kicked.
“A videotape?”
