Legacy of Seraph

Chapter Three

Yuan wiped his brow with a handkerchief. He hated business meetings. First of all was the attire. He was wearing a black suit with a gray silk tie. Also, the bangs that normally hung loose were tied back and his ponytail was tucked into his jacket. In his hand he held a briefcase. He also hated doing business on a one-on-one basis. He had no problem whatsoever with public speaking, but when it was just himself and one other person, he got restless.

Yuan stopped in front of a large office building. "KaibaCorp," Yuan said. "This is it. I just hope I can get this over and done with."

-3-

"Welcome to KaibaCorp," the receptionist said. "May I help you?"

"Yeah," Yuan responded nervously. "My name is Shane McCann, and I'm supposed to have a meeting with Seto K- I mean, with Mr. Kaiba."

The receptionist looked on the schedule of appointments. "I see. It looks like we have you down here for an appointment in ten minutes. Please take a seat and I will let you know when Mr. Kaiba is ready."

Yuan walked over to the corner and had a seat. Upon sitting down, he took his deck out of his pocket - he never went anywhere without it - and began looking through his cards.

"You're a duelist?" someone asked. Yuan looked up and saw a small boy with long black hair.

"Yeah, I guess you could say that," Yuan responded. "Although I'm here on business right now."

"You're here to see my brother, aren't you?" the boy asked.

"Your brother? Wait, are you Mokuba?" Yuan asked.

Mokuba nodded. "That's me," he said. "What's your name?"

"Well, my real name is Shane, but everyone calls me Yuan," Yuan responded.

"That's an interesting name," Mokuba remarked.

"Well, I come from the state of New York and in the language of one of the Native American tribes, 'yuan' means 'hurricane' or 'typhoon.'"

"If 'yuan' means 'typhoon,' why are you called that?" Mokuba asked.

Yuan laughed. "You're full of questions, aren't you? Not that there's nothing wrong with that. Well, let's just say I earned that nickname through dueling."

There was a pause. "Seto is the world champion, you know," Mokuba said.

Yuan nodded. "Yeah. I've never seen him in action, though. Hey, did you know I knew the world champion before Mr. Kaiba?"

Mokuba was surprised. "You mean you knew Charles McCann? Wow!"

"Yeah, I've seen him duel several times," Yuan said. "People used to call him 'Mr. 8000.' He could get a Red Eyes Black Metal Dragon on the field before his opponents knew what hit them."

"I bet Seto could beat him," Mokuba remarked.

"Oh, really?" Yuan asked. "What makes you say that?"

"Seto has a God Card," Mokuba answered.

This puzzled Yuan. "God Card? What's that?"

Just then, the receptionist called, "Mr. McCann, Mr. Kaiba is ready to see you."

Yuan got up and put his deck away. "Well, it was nice meeting you, Mokuba," Yuan said as he entered the office.

-3-

Yuan walked into the office and found Kaiba sitting behind his desk. He motioned for Yuan to have a seat.

"So you're the son of Mr. 8000, huh?" Kaiba said. "Shane McCann, am I right?"

Yuan nodded. "I must say, it's a pleasure to meet the Seto Kaiba, CEO and duelist extraordinaire. And I'd personally prefer to be called 'Yuan.'"

"All right, Yuan," Kaiba responded. "Let's get down to business."

Yuan sat up straight and placed his briefcase on his lap. "All right. As you may already know, I come representing McCann Microchips, the company who is responsible for the microchips in many household electronics, including your duel disks. The company was run by my father, Charles McCann, and his brother, Artis McCann, until my father died. I was slated to take his place.

"Very recently, my uncle and I constructed a new method of dueling. Since you have purchased our microchips to use in your duel disks, we decided to run this by you." Yuan opened his briefcase and took out what looked like a laptop computer with eight slots, four on opposite sides. "This is a completely new method to dueling. Unlike the Duel Monsters card game, which mixes some skill with a large amount of luck, this requires a lot of skill with some luck. This is called Battle Monsters.

"Each person takes four cards-" Yuan pulled out a Celtic Guardian, a Great White, a Doma the Angel of Silence, and a Beast of Talwar- "and inserts them in the slots as so." He placed the four cards in the slots. "The system needs to run a scan, and generates the monsters on the field." A hologram of the scan appeared and then showed a giant "OK"! Then, the four monsters appeared on the field.

"There is one limit," Yuan said. "You cannot have more than one of the same monster.

"Also, I want you to take a look at the status screen," Yuan said. He touched the hologram of the Celtic Guardian and a screen popped up. He pointed to the number four on the screen. "This is the monster's level. Initially, the level is the same as the level on the card, but as the monster battles, its level increases. As its level rises, its statistics increase and it can learn new attacks. Essentially, a Magician of Faith could eventually beat out a Black Luster Soldier; however, each monster has a unique rate of growth. Some monsters end up more powerful than others even at the same level. Also, monsters have strengths and weaknesses depending on their summon type. For example, Aqua beats Pyro, Thunder beats Pyro, and so on. Take this. This shows the complete hierarchy." Yuan pressed a button and ejected the cards. "Now it's time I think how we see this works firsthand. Take your four strongest cards, and it doesn't matter if they are fusion monsters."

Kaiba took out his deck and removed four cards. Yuan took four from his own deck. Each slid his cards in. Then, the monsters appeared. On Yuan's side, there was a Dark Paladin, a Dark Magician, a Buster Blader, and a Red Eyes Black Dragon. On Kaiba's side, there was a Blue Eyes White Dragon, a Curse of Dragon, a Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, and a large blue monster that Yuan did not recognize.

"Wait a second!" Yuan exclaimed. "What is that?"

"This is Obelisk the Tormentor," Kaiba said. "I take it you've never seen an Egyptian God Card."

"What is an Egyptian God Card?" Yuan asked. 'Well, whatever it is, Uncle Artis must have heard about it, since there was no error message'. "Never mind. Anyway, I see some advantages. First, you have two Light-based cards. I have three Dark-based monsters. According to the rules, Dark has an advantage over Light. Second, I have both Dark Paladin and Buster Blader. Buster Blader powers up from your three dragons, and my Dark Paladin benefits from your dragons as well as my Red Eyes Black Dragon. However, you have Obelisk the Tormentor-" Yuan touched the hologram of Obelisk and looked at the status screen -"which benefits from very high stats. Ouch.

"Now, to attack, select each monster individually and pick an attack. They will attack in an order determined by their speed." Kaiba went through each of his monsters, selecting their attack. When he was done, Yuan selected his last attack.

Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon attacked first. Its target was Dark Paladin. The attack hit Dark Paladin head-on and took out about a quarter of Dark Paladin's hit points.

"Why didn't the attack do mor damage?" Kaiba asked.

"It's because of the hierarchy," Yuan said. "Light is inferior to Dark."

Dark Paladin now attacked. It leaped up and brought its gigantic sword down on top of Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon. Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon was destroyed. Next, Blue Eyes White Dragon attacked Red Eyes Black Dragon, but did little damage. Next, Red Eyes Black Dragon attacked Blue Eyes White Dragon and destroyed it. Buster Blader then attacked and destroyed Curse of Dragon, and Dark Magician hit Obelisk the Tormentor but barely damaged it. Obelisk then attacked with an attack that hit all four of Yuan's monsters and destroyed Red Eyes Black Dragon. Each player picked his strategy for the next turn and attacked. Dark Paladin attacked Obelisk and managed to take a decent chunk of HP, and then a ringing sound was heard. Dark Paladin had just reached the next level. Dark Magician and Buster Blader then attacked, but neither of them caused any significant damage. Obelisk then attacked Dark Magician and Buster Blader simultaneously and both were destroyed. Next, Dark Paladin made contact once more, and Obelisk focused its attack on Dark Paladin, but something unexpected happened. The attack missed.

"Yuan, tell me what just happened," Kaiba demanded.

"The attack missed," Yuan said. "Not everything is guaranteed to hit. Look at Obelisk's stats. What does it say next to the attack you just used?"

Kaiba looked. "Accuracy 60," he said.

"That means that the attack had a sixty percent chance of hitting," Yuan said. "Also, monsters can score Critical Hits, which double the damage." Then, Dark Paladin attacked, and made a critical hit. Obelisk was destroyed. The system shut down, and both players received their cards.

Kaiba thought for a moment, then said, "I'll think about it. I'll call you two days from now."

"Okay," Yuan said. "In the meantime, keep this Battle Board and try it out. You can also battle against the computer."

"I have one question," Kaiba said. "How did Charles McCann die?"

"How did my father die?" Yuan repeated. "That's a real sensitive spot, you know?"

"I don't care," Kaiba responded. "I want to know."

Yuan sighed. "Fine. I needed to talk to you about this anyway."

-3-

"So I came to warn you," Yuan said. "I know that they will come after you, and-"

"They have," Kaiba interrupted.

Yuan shot up. "What? They have?"

"Yes, they have," Kaiba confirmed. "A man walked right in and challenged me. I defeated him, but that didn't keep the action from getting heated."

"Be on your guard," Yuan said. "They'll come back. What we need to do is to bring the fight to them."

"Wait," Kaiba said. "What do you mean by 'we?'"

"I mean, you, me, Yugi, Joey-"

"You want me to team up with those losers?" Kaiba said. "I refuse."

"Listen to me!" Yuan exclaimed. "The only way to stop them is to work together!"

"I don't want or need any help," Kaiba said.

"You know why I lost to the head honcho?" Yuan said. "The bastard had the Millennium Eye!"

Now it was Kaiba's turn to be surprised. "What?"

"Yes! He had the Millennium Eye! Only Yugi can defeat someone armed with the Millennium Eye! You saw its powers firsthand!"

Kaiba held up a hand to silence Yuan. "Listen to me," he said. "I can appreciate this threat, and I appreciate your warning me. However, I have always done things my own way, and this time is no different."

"And if you are forced to join us?" Yuan asked.

"Then so be it," Kaiba responded. 'Although it wouldn't be the first time'. "Now if this meeting is finished, there is nothing more to discuss. I bid you farewell."

Yuan sighed. He knew that arguing with Kaiba would be fruitless. He turned around and left.

-3-

"Seto?" Mokuba entered his brother's office. "Who was that man?"

"That was Yuan McCann, co-owner of McCann Microchips," Kaiba said. "He was proposing a new game system involving Duel Monsters cards. It's interesting, to say the least." He handed the Battle Board to Mokuba. "Here. You can try it out if you want. I'm too busy right now."

"Hey, Seto, did you know that Yuan knew Charles McCann?" Mokuba asked.

"Well, I would certainly hope he did," Kaiba responded. "After all, he is the man's only son."

"What?" Mokuba exclaimed. "He told me he only knew Charles McCann!"

"If you do see him again, don't bug him about it," Kaiba said. "I'm willing to bet he's just trying to avoid attention. Word gets out to the wrong person that the son of Mr. 8000 himself is in Domino and the press will be pestering him more than a horde of fleas pesters a dog."

-3-

"So, how'd it go with ol' grumpy?" Joey asked.

"Well, I think I stood a chance until I got angry with his stubbornness to cooperate with us," Yuan grumbled. 'Damn! Why do I always lose my temper at the worst possible times?'

"Look, don't worry about it," Duke said. "What's past is past. You gave it your best. That's all you could do."

Just then, the phone rang. Yugi went to answer it.

"I wish there was something I could do to help," Tristan said. "I wish I wasn't such a lousy duelist."

"There are other ways of helping us besides dueling, Tristan," Yuan said. "You probably just haven't found a way yet. Besides, if all you can do is cheer us on from the sidelines, that's good, too. You have no idea how it feels to be cheered on from the sidelines in a duel."

Just then, Yugi ran into the room. "Guys! We've got a problem!" he exclaimed. "Someone has broken into the Egypt Exhibition!"

"Is Ishizu all right?" Tea asked fearfully.

"For the moment," Yugi responded. "But she says that the person who broke in is a powerful duelist!"

"It may be a Westram!" Yuan exclaimed, jumping up. "Let's go!"

"Uh, excuse me for askin', but how are we gonna get to da Egypt Exhibition in time ta help?" Joey asked. "I mean, Yuan and I are da only ones with cars, and Tristan's got a motorcycle."

"Well, I can take one passenger, and Tristan can also take one passenger," Yuan said.

"Well, I guess dat means I get two," Joey said.

"I'll take Serenity!" Tristan piped in.

"Like hell you are!" Joey snapped. "Ain't no way I'm lettin' my sister ride a motorcycle!"

"Joey, can I go with Yuan?" Serenity asked.

"I don't know," Joey responded.

"I don't mind, Joey," Yuan said.

"All right," Joey said.

"Yay!" Serenity exclaimed. "Joey, you're the best!"

"Joey, can I ride with you?" Yugi asked. "I've wanted to ride in your car since you got it. It looks cool!"

"Yeah! No problem, Yug!" Joey responded.

"I'll go with Yugi and Joey, then," Tea said.

"So, that leaves me with . . ." Tristan trailed off. He looked over at Duke. "Tea! Do you want to come with me instead?"

"No way!" Tea exclaimed. "I'm not riding any motorcycle!"

"Well, can I go with Joey?" Duke asked.

"Only if Yugi goes in the backseat with me," Tea said.

"Sorry, Tea, but I already promised Yugi shotgun," Joey said.

"Then, no way, Duke," Tea responded.

"Fine, I'll take Duke," Tristan said. Why me?

"Before we go, can I talk to ya for a second, Yuan?"

"Sure," Yuan said. "Just make it quick."

As everyone else left the shop, Joey said, "Don't make any moves on my sister, got it?"

"Don't worry," Yuan said. "She's too young for my interest, anyway."

"All right, good," Joey said. "I just wanted to clear that up with you."

-3-

"Wow! Cool!" Serenity exclaimed as she got in Yuan's Corvette. "I guess you're into classic cars like my brother, huh?"

Yuan laughed. "I guess you could say that. Do you want to ride with the top up or down?"

"Oh, down, definitely!" Serenity exclaimed. "I love convertibles!"

"Fine by me," Yuan said. "It saves me the trouble of putting the top up." He then started the engine.

"Wow! This is loud!" Serenity shouted. "No radio?"

"No, it's broken," Yuan responded. "Besides, you wouldn't be able to hear it over the engine."

Joey pulled up. "Follow me to get to da Egypt Exhibition!" he shouted.

"All right!" Yuan responded. "Lead the way!" Joey then took off. Yuan grabbed the gearshift, shifted into first gear, and hit the accelerator in hot pursuit.
