Legacy of Seraph
Chapter Six
"Well, here we are," Yuan said as he stepped out of the plane. "Cairo, Egypt."
"All right," Joey said. "What's the plan for findin' Marik? I mean, he was a Tombkeeper, so it's not like he's got an apartment in Cairo or somethin'."
Yuan pulled a folded-up sheet of paper from his pocket. "Yugi gave me this," he said. "He got directions to Marik's home from Ishizu."
"And why didn't ya get them yourself?" Joey asked.
Yuan's face began to turn red. "Um . . . I was . . . uh, busy, that's all."
"Riiight," Joey remarked. "So, what do we do?"
"It says here that we go to the south of Cairo," Yuan said. "He lives in a small village near the Nile. But it says to throw Joey into the Nile to appease the gods."
"What?!" Joey exclaimed. "Gimme dat!"
Yuan held the paper above his head. "Come on, I'm only joking!" Yuan responded as Serenity started laughing.
Joey calmed down. "So, how are we gonna get dere, anyway?"
"Don't worry," Yuan answered. "Uncle Artis said he would take care of it." Just then, a limousine pulled up. The chauffeur got out, pulled out a slip of paper. "McCann?"
"That's me," Yuan said as he gave the man his driver's license as ID.
The chauffeur returned the license to Yuan. "Very well. I am Omar, your chauffeur today. Where are you going?"
Yuan got out the sheet of paper and looked. "We're going to the village south of here," he said.
"All right," Omar responded. "Get in."

"Yes! Dis rocks!" Joey exclaimed. This was his first time in a limo, and he was acting like a little kid. "I neva thought I'd see da day dat I get to ride in a limo!"
"So, in other words, you won't get married?" Yuan joked. "Anyway, what's this Marik like?"
"Well, now he's a nice guy," Joey said, "but he wasn't always dat way. During da Battle City tournament, he was, well, a psycho." This led Joey into explaining what all had happened during Battle City, with Serenity adding her input every now and then.
Yuan pulled The Winged Dragon of Ra from his deck box and looked at it. "So you're saying that this card was once an instrument of evil? Unbelievable." Yuan looked up from the card and out the window. "Well, not anymore. This card will be my ally in the fight against the Westrams."

Yuan, Joey, and Serenity got out of the limo and found themselves in a village. "This is the place," Omar said. "Just so you know, many of the people here do not speak English. For this purpose, I have been hired to be an interpreter, as well."
"All right," Yuan responded. "Thank you." He mentally reminded himself to double Omar's tip.
A woman walked up to them and said something in Arabic. "She wants to know what we are doing here," Omar translated.
"We are here to see Marik Ishtar," Yuan said. Omar translated his statement into Arabic.
The woman responded. "She wants a physical description," Omar said.
"Well, he's got long blond hair and violet eyes," Joey said. Omar translated and the woman answered.
"He lives in the outskirts to the south," Omar said.

When Yuan, Joey, Serenity, and Omar reached Marik's home, they found Odion standing outside.
"Welcome, powerful duelists," Odion said.
"Man, I neva get tired of hearin' dat!" Joey remarked. "It's good to see ya, Odion."
"What brings you here?" Odion asked.
"We need to see Marik," Yuan said.
"Who are you?" Odion asked, making eye contact with Yuan for the first time.
"My name is Yuan McCann," Yuan responded. "We were sent here by Ishizu to awaken The Winged Dragon of Ra in battle mode."
"I am sorry, but Master Marik cannot be disturbed right now," Odion said.
"Well, I guess we have to wait," Yuan said.
"But how long can we really wait?" Joey asked. "I mean, with things da way dey are . . ."
"Odion, it is fine," said a voice from inside the building. "Let them in."
"As you wish, Master," Odion responded. He then motioned for the others to follow him. "This way, please."

Yuan, Joey, and Serenity (Omar was waiting outside) followed Odion into the building. Inside, it looked like a miniature temple from ancient Egypt. Marik stood in front of the altar. "Welcome."
"Hey, Marik!" Joey said. "Long time no see!"
Marik smiled. "Yes, it has been a while, Joey. I see your sister is here, too." He then looked at Yuan. "Who are you? I've never seen you before."
"My name is Yuan McCann," Yuan said. "It's nice to meet you, Marik."
Marik nodded. "Now, what brings the three of you here?" he asked.
"Ishizu sent us here," Yuan said. He pulled The Winged Dragon of Ra from his deck case. "She said that you are the only one who knows how to activate this card's battle mode."
Marik's eyes widened and his jaw dropped. "Is that . . . The Winged Dragon of Ra?"
Yuan nodded. "It chose me to be its user. Currently, it's in sphere mode, and Ishizu said that you are the only one who can awaken it in battle mode."
"I thought my sister sealed it away after she and the Pharaoh determined that it was not yet time to restore his memory," Marik said. "Why would she remove the seal?"
"Do you have anywhere to sit?" Yuan said. "This is a long story, and I have flat feet, so I can stand for just a limited period of time."
Marik turned to his adopted brother. "Odion, would you be so kind as to get us some chairs?" Odion nodded and left. A moment later, he returned with five wooden chairs. Yuan, Joey, Serenity, Marik, and Odion each took a seat.

"So, you see, I need you to activate this card's battle mode so I can better fight the Westrams."
"I understand," Marik said. "I will do it. However, in return, I would like to ask you a favor."
"Name it," Yuan said.
"Take me back with you," Marik said. "I am a strong duelist, even without the Egyptian God Card. Also, I don't feel I've atoned for my sins yet. Maybe fighting these Westrams will help me find redemption."
"Sure," Yuan answered. "We need all of the help that we can get." He then handed Marik his Egyptian God Card. Marik set it on the altar and turned to face Yuan.
"I cannot awaken Ra just yet," Marik said. "I first need to test your worthiness." He picked up a duel disk. "We will duel. If you can defeat me, you will prove yourself worthy of Ra's power."
Yuan lifted his duel disk and shifted it into dueling mode. "All right. Let's begin."

"Dark Paladin!" Yuan shouted. "Destroy my opponent's monster!" The hologram of the Dark Paladin charged forward and brought its gigantic sword down on Marik's monster, destroying it and reducing Marik's Life Points to zero. Yuan himself was left with 4,500 Life Points.
Marik smiled. "Congratulations. You are indeed worthy of The Winged Dragon of Ra." Marik put his duel disk away and faced the altar. Marik then said an incantation as Yuan, Joey, Serenity, and Odion watched. When Marik finished the incantation, the card changed. Yuan pulled out Seraph and found the sword to be glowing. Marik then turned around, card in hand. "It's ready."
Yuan took the card from Marik and looked at it. "Incredible," he said.
"Just remember, Egyptian God Cards are forbidden in tournaments," Joey said.
"That's fine," Yuan said. "I have plenty of faith in my current deck. Besides, I want Ra's aid in defeating the Westrams, not winning tournaments." He placed the card in his deck case. "Although it would help in the upcoming tournament."
"Tournament?" Joey asked. "What tournament?"
"Remember when I was talking with Kaiba in the airport?" Yuan asked.
Joey clenched his teeth at the memory. "Yeah."
"Well, he wanted to tell me two things," Yuan said. "First, he's going to mass-produce my Battle Board. Second, he's holding a tournament in a few weeks in New York. He thinks it will be the best way to get rid of the Westrams, since they'll be attracted toward all of the powerful duelists. He told me beforehand to see if I wanted the chance to offer a memorial service for my father."
"You said your father was killed by the Westrams, right?" Marik asked. "Why would you hold a memorial service open to the public?"
"Because my father was Charles McCann," Yuan said.
"Your father was the Charles McCann, the World Champion duelist before Seto Kaiba?" Marik asked in surprise.
Yuan nodded. "He is one of the reasons that I have as much skill as I do." As he said this, he hung his head. "I'd rather not be remembered as 'Charles McCann's son,' however. I want to carve my own image."
Marik nodded. "All right. Give me a few moments to Odion and me to get ready."
"All right," Yuan responded. "We'll leave as soon as the two of you are ready."
