Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Life In The Duelist Kingdom ❯ Chapter 1

[ P - Pre-Teen ]
A/N I am Brian. Hi! This is my first fic. I call this a 'what if' fanfiction, because it deals with a lot of what if's. Maybe I'll point some of them out to you as we go along. And, thanks to my pal Sakura22 for offering to post it for me in her name. I didn't have a pen name here so she was going to post it for me, but I finally got up the courage to sign up. I'm just a bit paranoid on the web…one more thing. This was originally in my journal at Teen Open Diary. If you go to www.teenopendiary.com and search for Yugi that'll be this fic in diary form. Thanks!

Chapter 1

So here I am on the boat heading for the Duelist Kingdom. My deck safely in my pocket and my Millennium Item around my neck.

I found my Item two years ago when I went on a trip for my major, Egyptology. I was walking around one of the lesser-known pyramids when I tripped over something! I looked down and there it was, a box with the eye of Ra on it. I knew I had probably ruined it already by tripping over it, so I picked it up. There was a small hole on it, like a lock. But I did not have the key.

I finally opened it half a year later. I had been about to give up and was wondering what to do with the box. I picked it up and with a little 'click' it opened. I'm not sure what happened after that...it was like I had blacked out. When I woke up, I had a Pendant of the eye of Ra around my neck and the box had my deck in it. It felt like there was...another presence inside me. Something that was definitely not there before.

\\Confused?\\ I had heard an odd voice say in my head.

Yes, I was very confused. \Who...who are you?\ I stammered.

\\I am an ancient spirit that has been locked away inside this pendant.\\

That definitely did not make sense at the time. After many questions and odd answers I found I would just have to cope. There was no way he was getting out of my head, no way he would let me.

After a while we got to be more like friends. I would not say we became close as best friends are, but we became close in the fact that we were trapped in the same place.

So here I am on this boat, heading toward what may be life or death, because after that fateful day I have not been the same. My Yami, as he calls himself, has been searching for other Millennium Item bearers, and he can sense that there was not one, not two, but three of the mystical Items where we are heading.

So I am on this boat still. My Yami does not wish to be disturbed. The agreement (which, like I said, is more mutual than anything) was wearing thin; he seemed to be occupied a lot lately.

So I watched the amateurs trade cards, laugh, talk, joke, and do other things a serious duelist would not do. I couldn't stand watching them, and it was hot anyway. I went outside, the refreshing sea breeze blowing against my face. A few people were out here, too. A boy with blonde hair and brown eyes; a boy with red and black spikes and yellow bangs; a girl with long blonde hair and, oddly, purple eyes. I recognized a reigional finalist, Rex Raptor, out here too.

I sighed and put my arms on the railing, then my head on my arms. I was sure this tournament would be a challenge bigger than I expected. Maybe I would actually lose. But I was not going to give up easy. I never did.

The purple-eyed girl walked past me and winked, only to walk up to Rex and start to talk to him. The wind blew their conversation from my ears, so I could not hear what was said, but eventually they agreed on something and went inside.

Then a boy with long white hair came out. I heard slight growl from my Yami, catching me unaware.

\What's wrong? Is it that kid?\ I asked.

\\That is no 'kid'. That is Ryou.\\

\Who is Ryou? Is he another Yami?\ I asked. Now this was very confusing.

\\Yes, he is. I suggest you go and try to talk to him, get his story. He probably has his item hidden, so do something to ours to hide it. And make sure he doesn't get too suspicious.\\

\Suspicious?\ I asked. But there was no reply. I knew that if I didn't agree with Yami he would make me anyway. So I had no choice but to talk to this person. But first to hide my Item. I tucked inside my shirt, hoping that he would not see it.

"Hello!" I said to the boy.

The boy looked at me. I knew he was looking at me, the boy with the glasses and the brown hair. I hardly looked intimidating. I was told that I would never be able to scare a duelist by my looks, just my knowledge. But what did it matter?

"Hello. Are you a duelist too?" The boy asked. He was very cheery...to cheery. He had an odd British accent. Don't get many of those around where I come from. But it just seemed like he was trying too hard, like he was forcing the cheerfulness out.

"Yes. I'm Brian Maxwell, nice to meet you," I said, introducing myself.

"I'm Bakura. Glad to meet you, too," he said with a smile. Again, it seemed forced.

"So, where are you from?" I asked, not knowing exactly what Yami wanted me to ask him.

"Actually, I'm a foreign exchange student from England."

"England? Nice place. A bit rainy, though, hm?" I said. Maybe Yami would tell me what he wanted. I had no clue.

"Yes, rainy all the time. Well, it's sunnier here, so I'm happy at least."

That was odd, because it was dark out. And he didn't sound exactly like he knew what he was saying, either.

"That's good. It's usually sunny in Rhode Island, where I come from. By the ocean, too." I decided to return the favor, since he had told me where he was from.

"Rhode Island? In the United States?" I nodded at his question. "Well, I guess it's nice over there. It was nice meeting you!" He said with another forced smile, then walked back inside. But it seemed to me like he didn't want to be seen.
