Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Love & Duel Monsters ❯ Seeing a Ghost Card ( Chapter 1 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Just a warning, I am changing events in the Yu-Gi-Oh storyline. Adding characters, taking characters away, and various other little details that you will see. But they're all for a good cause, the cause of my story. (Insert laugh here) This is my first Yu-Gi-Oh fan fiction attempt, so be kind.

Yugi had never seen a line so long in his entire life. At least that's what his 17-year-old mind conceived. His patients had begun to wear out, but that was nothing compared to the whining that Tristan and Tea had to put up with from Joey.

“How long could it possibly take to sign up for a duel monsters tournament?” Joey whined.

“As long as it takes for all those people to get through the form, Joey.” Tea glared.

“Well, they better hurry up, I'm starving.” This received a nod from Tristan.

With the sun beating down on the whole group, tension was rising. But, as always, Yugi was the mediator of the group.

“C'mon guys, the line's not that long. And besides, it gives us all time to talk while we wait.” Tea had to smile and the mediating skills of the younger kid standing beside her. Of course sometimes she was amazed what he said actually worked.
“Who do you think is sponsoring this tournament, guys?” Tea mused.

“You guys didn't hear?” a young girl in front of them asked as she turned around.

“No,” Tea replied, watching as Yugi stared at the young girl as if he'd seen an angel. “you know?”

“Yeah. Seto Kaiba.” Those words pounded into the group's heads. Why would Kaiba start a tournament?

“Are you sure?” Joey stepped forward as if to hear her better.

“Yeah. My Uncle Max told me. To tell you the truth I wasn't going to enter until I heard he'd be hosting it.” She noticed the way Yugi was staring at her and she smiled. “I need to see what kind of theatrics he will think up for this.”

“You're not kidding.” Tristan smiled. “You know he'll throw out everything he's got to show he's the most superior.”

“But even the `great' Seto Kaiba couldn't beat the unbeatable Yugi Moto.” This made Yugi blush and look toward the ground.

“So, what's your name?” Joey asked.

“Stacy. And you're Joey, Tristan and Tea, right?” The three were taken back by her knowing their names before they even knew who she was.

“Wow, how'd did you know us?” Tea gasped.

“There's no one around here who doesn't know Yugi's cheerleaders.” She paused after that sentence to see the glare coming from Joey before adding, “and the finalist Joey Wheeler.”

It seemed like forever when they all finally made it to the table at the front of the line. They each took a clipboard and filled the form out. After which they all were told to exit to the left side and be back in the morning at 9 a.m.

“Well, I guess we'll see you tomorrow.” Joey smiled.

“Yeah. But tomorrow we'll be rivals. Don't worry, though, boys. I have a feeling we won't duel until the finals.” This brought a smile to her face for a reason unknown to any of them.

This day was the only day the central square of Domino City was filled with teenagers at nine in the morning. And amongst them were Joey, Tea, Tristan, and Yugi. Yugi, at the moment, was frantically looking for a young girl named Stacy from the day before. He'd thought he'd seen her light red hair several times, but it was his mind playing tricks on him. That was, until Kaiba began making his announcement.

“Attention mediocre duelists. It is I, Seto Kaiba. If you are here then you are amongst the few who are good enough to be in this tournament. Inside your duel disk box is a locator card…” The huge TV screen image of Kaiba (which in no way was big enough for his ego to fit on) droned on and on as Yugi lost interest and began glancing around the central square. He could feel eyes on him, although he wasn't sure where they were coming from. When he finally found the green eyes, they were connected to the light red hair he was looking for. Finally, he'd found Stacy. She was silhouetted by the early morning sunlight, which made her look more like an angel than she did before. He was so engrossed in looking at her, he never heard Kaiba announce the tournament's starting.

“Earth to Yugi. You still with us, bud?” Joey nudged him, taking him out of his stare.

“Yeh-yeah. Sorry, I'm here.” Yugi smiled up, noticing the smirk on Joey's face. Knowing that Joey had seen where he'd been staring all that time.

“I guess you found your mystery girl, huh?” Tristan smirked as he looked for Stacy within the crowd.

“Yeh-yeah.” Yugi stuttered again.

“She is a pretty girl, right Yugi?” The Pharaoh spirit chimed in, making Yugi frown. He could feel the Pharaoh smirk inside his head. Ignoring all of them, he decided to change the subject and find his first opponent. As the group split up; Tea with Yugi, Tristan with Joey; they started on their path to their own destinies.

“So who do you want to duel first, Yugi?” Tea asked, walking behind him.

“I guess whoever I run into first, or whoever finds me.” Yugi couldn't help but wonder if he being in this tournament was going to be another `path in his destiny' just like everything else.

“Don't worry, Yugi. You're an amazing duelist, we have all the faith in the world in you. But Joey might need your help here too, just like Duelist Kingdom.” Tea suddenly looked worried. Worried for Joey.

“Tea, Joey will be fine. He just needs to trust in the heart of the cards to get through this tournament.”

“I just hope he does okay. I would hate to have his spirit drained.” The look on her face troubled him, but he tried to smile and make Tea smile in the process. As they walked further into the city, they saw a crowd gathering around in a circle. Wondering what was going on there, the two of them walked into the crowd. “A duel, go figure.”

“It is a dueling tournament.” Yugi smirked. “Who's dueling, I can't see.” His short figure couldn't see over top of the taller people in front of him. Tea put her hand on his back and led him through the crowd until they pushed their way to the front of the. Yugi's eyes grew big as he saw who was dueling, Stacy and Rex Raptor.

Rex's field already had Black Tyranno face up and two cards in his Spell and Trap card zones. As if that wasn't bad enough he had 1000 points over Stacy. But she wasn't looking worried. In fact, Stacy looked happy.

“You're turn. Not like it will matter anyway. I've got you trapped.” Rex laughed.

“Rex, you talk a lot for someone who never says anything.” She drew her card and a smile appeared on her face from ear to ear. “But that's okay. You won't be talking for long.” She played her first card from the series in her hand. “I play the magic card White Dragon Ritual. This card requires me to tribute monsters whose level stars equal four. I choose the Skilled Dark Magician on the field. That's four, just enough.” The field was illuminated as a beautiful white dragon being rode by a warrior appeared. “This summons Paladin of White Dragon!”

“What was the point of that? That monster still has less attack points than my Black Tyranno.” Rex scratched his head.

“I didn't say I was done yet, did I?” She drew a card from her left hand and held it up high. “I activate my Paladin of White Dragon's special ability. When I sacrifice this monster I can special summon one Blue-Eyes White Dragon from my hand.”

“You can't have a Blue-Eyes. Seto Kaiba has them all.” Rex stepped back, not believing he heard her right. Yugi and Tea did the same thing. There was no way. They knew exactly what happened to the fabled fourth Blue-Eyes. And they also knew there was no way Stacy could have it.

“It was destroyed.” Yugi gasped. “Right?” He looked to Tea for support, who only stared at the light-red haired girl before her.

“A year ago I would have thought you were right. But this card found me. Well, actually, the two pieces found me. I was outside Kaiba Corp. one day and I'd stopped to tie my shoe. And there, on the ground, were two pieces of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon card. Now, there was no way I was ever going to let it just lay there. So I took it home, cleaned it up, carefully taped it back together, and magically it works. And I play it now. Go, Blue-Eyes White Dragon!” There, in perfect hologram clarity, was the enormous Blue-Eyes roaring down at Rex. “Isn't she beautiful?”

The entire crowd gasped in unison when Stacy released her treasured card. As it attacked Rex, the street glowed a bright white. Yugi just knew that somewhere in some big high-tech facility, Kaiba was gasping just like they were.

“This is impossible.” Rex gasped. “It's a fake, a copy. It can't be real.”

“Oh, she's real. And she's pissed off that you would think that she is a copy. Ain't ya girl?” Stacy looked up into the enormous face of her dragon and smiled.

“Yami, can you believe this is happening?” Yugi thought to his older friend.

“Kaiba will not be pleased, Yugi. After this duel is over, we should tell her the truth about her card.”

“Yeah, I agree.” Yugi's eyes grew big once more when she played a magic card in the middle of her battle phase.

“I play the magic card Clone Machine.”

“There is no such card!” Rex fumed.

“That's because there's only two of them. And only me and Maxamillion Pegasus has them.” A huge cylinder tube emerged from the ground as a cloud of fog immersed the playing field. “By paying 500 life points, I can get one clone of any card on the field. I can do this as many times per turn as I want to. But right now I only want one clone of my beautiful dragon.”

A second Blue-Eyes appeared on the field and attacked Rex before he could even think. Yugi wondered for a second what the two facedown cards on Rex's side of the field were, but figured it was better not to ask, as Rex was probably too stunned to use them. Reluctantly, Rex handed over his Black Tyranno and his locator card to Stacy.

“I'll take your locator card, Rex, but you can keep your Black Tyranno. It goes better with your deck than mine.” Stacy smiled. As shocked as Rex was, the crowd was more. Yugi chalked it up to the most shocking duel he had ever witnessed. And he'd seen a lot in his 17 years.

Stacy turned to walk away, sticking her newly acquired locator card in her back pocket as she walked. Yugi and Tea exchanged glances and hurried to keep up with her.

“Stacy!” Tea called as they neared where she had stopped. Stacy turned around and smiled to see who was calling for her.

“Hey. Did you guys see my duel?” She sat down on one end of the picnic table as they stopped in front of her.

“Where did you get a Blue-Eyes?” Tea asked as she sat down across from her.
“I found it. I just told the story…”

“Outside of Kaiba Corp, how?”

“What's wrong, guys? You look like you just saw a ghost.”

“We did.” Tea breathed out in almost a whisper. Stacy gave a Yugi a confused look and he took a deep breath before explaining. “Why would Kaiba, King of the Dragon Fetish, rip a Blue-Eyes White Dragon card?”

“Kaiba, um, wasn't himself then. He figured that if he couldn't have it in his deck, no one could.” Yugi was sure she didn't fully understand, but he'd hoped the story gave her some explanation for when Kaiba came. As he was sure he would. The three of them looked up as the sound of a helicopter emerged from the sky. When it landed, the door flew open and Seto Kaiba himself jumped out and walked briskly toward them.

“You have a card of mine. Give it to me.” His raspy voice snarled at Stacy, who still looked confused from Yugi's story.

“Kaiba, we both know that's not `your' card.” Yugi stepped forward, in front of Stacy who was purely innocent in this situation.

“Yugi, don't get in my way. That was meant to be mine and she will give it back to me.”

“Uncle Max already told you not to stand in my way in this competition, Kaiba. Don't make me call him.” This received a look of shock from Yugi and Tea as Stacy stepped forward and confronted Kaiba.

“Do you actually think I'm scared of him, little girl?”

“You should be.” Their glare lasted for what seemed as forever until Kaiba blinked and turned toward the helicopter.

“I will win that card. And you will be sorry you entered this competition.” He climbed in the helicopter and it flew away, leaving Stacy there with a smirk on her face.

“He's all big and bad until someone finally stands up to him. Then he's just a bruised little puppy dog.” Tea and Yugi exchanged glances as Stacy turned to walk away.

“Wait!” Yugi ran up to her. “You have to know Kaiba to talk to him like that.
And he knows your Uncle Max?”

“You sure have a lot of questions, little Yugi. But don't worry. We'll have more time to talk at the finals.”
