Chapter 3: A Fated Meeting

Sapphire was walking down the streets of Domino City. So far, it hadn't been a glamorous day for her. Five guys had already tried to hit on her and every one of those times she had told the guys off. Why couldn't they understand that she wasn't in the mood for a commitment?

Just as she was rounding a corner, she heard someone scream. Her sapphire blue eyes were wide in shock. She began to run to where she heard the yell. When she came to the area, a terrible sight met her eyes. She saw a group of boys, large boys at that. They were all crowded around someone that was on the ground.

Sapphire looked closely and gasped. It was the boy she had met the day before. What was his name again? Bakura, wasn't it? Well, whatever his name was, she had to help him. He was being beat up! She rushed forward crying, "Hey! What the hell do you think you're doing?!"

The boys turned around to face her. "Back off, lady!" one guy said. "This doesn't concern you!"

"Yes it does! That's my friend that you are hurting!" she spat angrily. She knew this was a lie. She would never be friends with someone after a few days of meeting them, but at the moment, it was the only excuse she had.

"This weakling?" mocked another boy. "C'mon, you can do better than him, sweetheart."

"Don't call me that, you jerk! I mean it, leave Bakura alone!"

"Not a chance!" the boys said in unison. One of them punched Bakura in the gut to emphasize his ferocity. Sapphire wanted to cry. Bakura looked a mess. He was bleeding and he had bruises all along his arms and face. Suddenly, her bracelet began to glow and her appearance changed. She now had longer black hair and emerald green eyes. She was wearing the same clothes as before: a cotton blue halter-top with black flare jeans.

Right now she was holding a card in her right hand. "Leave the boy alone, or you will have to deal with me," she snarled in a dangerous voice that wasn't her own. It was deeper and more evil sounding. The thugs still would not back down and Sapphire was becoming impatient. "Very well. I guess I will have to resort to violence then, eh?" She raised the card, which was identified as a Morphing Jar, and pointed it at the boys. It devoured them in a matter of seconds. She smirked devilishly and soon returned to her normal self.

She shook her head and rushed to Bakura's side. She managed to lift his head up. "B-Bakura?" she whispered softly. She barely knew this person, so why was she helping him?

His brown eyes slowly began to open. He blinked a few times. "W-who's there?" he asked.

"You met me yesterday. I'm Sapphire."

"Oh. Thank you for saving me. I owe you."

"Don't think anything of it. I'm sure you would have done the same for me."

"Well, whatever the reason, thank you."

"You're welcome." She helped him stand up. "Why don't I take you back to my place? I can clean those cuts and bruises for you."

Bakura stared into her eyes. "But you hardly even know me," he pressed, his English accent becoming clearer.

"So? What matters is that I'm willing to help someone in need. Come on now, don't complain." Against his better judgement, Bakura finally allowed her to bring him back to her apartment. Sapphire had to check that no one was around first. Then she laid him on the couch and went to get a washcloth.

The silver-haired boy stared up at her with curious eyes. "Why did you save me?" he asked, somewhat harsher than what he intended.

Sapphire looked at him for a long time before responding. "It was the right thing to do. I'm sure you woulda done the same for me if I were in that dilemma. Can we just drop the subject now?" she snapped as she applied the medicine for his cuts. He winced in mild pain.

"Well…thanks again," he said softly. He was smiling at her. Sapphire felt her insides turn to mush and her knees weaken. His smile could even melt her cold, uncaring heart.

"D-don't get all sappy about it, British boy," she replied, quickly trying to hide her emotions. He continued to smile at her.

"Would you mind if I call my father? Just to let him know where I am," he asked.

"Not at all," she said and handed him the phone. Bakura quickly called his father and gave the phone back to her.

"He said I could stay here for awhile, until I feel better," he said.

Sapphire nodded. "All right then. I'll be sure to tell the others."

Joey had gone out earlier that day just to get some fresh air. He had no idea that he would have met up with the girl he had met the recent day. Jade Stevens was a pretty girl, like most of her friends. She had long golden hair, tied back in a high ponytail. Her tawny-yellow eyes were usually shimmering brightly. Today she was wearing a sleeveless top with a short skirt. Joey had never truly noticed until he saw her up close that she had two tattoos on her arms. On her right arm, there was a letter `J' and on her left arm there was the peace symbol.

"Hey," he said running over to greet her. She turned her fabulous head to look at him.

"Um…do I know you?" she asked, trying to sound polite.

"Yeah, we met yesterday. I'm Joey Wheeler, Yugi's best friend."

"Oh, sorry. Sometimes things slip my mind." She giggled and Joey immediately felt his heart skip a beat. She sounded cute when she giggled like that. "So…what's new?" she asked.

"Nuthin' much. How `bout you?"

"Eh, a little this a little that. I'm just a tumbleweed blowin' in the wind, as my dad likes to say."

Joey chuckled. "Yeah, that about fits ya. Do you wanna join me for a walk in the park?"

"Sure, I'd like that, Joseph."

"Call me Joey, Miss Stevens."

She laughed. "Okay and you can call me Jade."

He nodded and led her to the park.

The day had seemed to go by so fast, in Alana's opinion. One minute she was cuddling up in Seto's arms, the next it was nearly dusk and time to go home. She and him were walking through the park, hand in hand. They stopped to sit on a bench. Alana carefully sat on Seto's lap. He playfully took a strand of her raven-black hair and twirled it around his finger.

"How could I have not realized your beauty the moment I saw you?" he asked, more to himself than to her.

She shook her head, unable to think of an answer. "I'll tell you why," he began. "It's because I've never felt the joys of loving someone, other than my little brother. I've been so hooked up to my machines, that I haven't the time to go looking for someone to make my life whole. Until now, that is. You suddenly came into my life and now, you're my everything. I love you."

Alana could feel tears building up in her violet eyes. She gently wiped them away, leaned down, and kissed him softly on the lips. Seto wasn't afraid to respond. He moaned in pleasure as he carefully pulled her into his lap. His hands massaged her shoulders as they kissed. They separated and stared into each other's eyes. Alana smiled up at him as he caressed her face.

"You mean everything to me, Seto Kaiba," she whispered. She kissed him on the mouth again. She opened her mouth to him so that he could slip his tongue inside. He did so and let it roam around. She groaned. Her hands began to move up his shirt to remove the buttons, but they were soon interrupted.

"Are you guys done yet?" said a familiar Brookline accented voice. Seto and Alana looked up in surprise to find Joey and Jade standing there. Jade was blushing furiously and Joey was grinning like a madman. "I'm surprised Alana is still breathin', Kaiba," Joey commented.

"No one asked you, dog," Seto spat. He wanted to punch Joey out right then and there, but he felt Alana's strong grip on his arm.

"Seto," she said warningly. He calmed down and sighed heavily. Alana turned back to the two blondes. "What are you guys doing here?" she wondered.

Jade decided to answer. "We were just passing through," she said shortly.

"Yeah, and we saw you two makin' out," added Joey with a twisted smile. Seto blushed as did Alana.

"Don't you have any manners, mutt?" Seto growled while clenching his fists. "Call me crazy, but watching people kiss in public is very rude."

Jade nodded accusingly at Joey. "Oh, so now ya blame it on me?" he snarled.

"Well, you were the one that spotted them and urged us to go over," she replied raising her eyebrows. Joey sweat dropped. If looks could kill, Joey would have been lying on the ground with a hole through his face because of the evil glare that Kaiba was giving him.

Jade and Alana turned to each other. "Do you by any chance know where Ebony is?" Jade asked. "Or Sapph? I can't seem to find them anywhere."

"Eb said she was goin' somewhere today, but I can't remember where. Maybe that new game shop or somethin', I dunno," Alana replied thoughtfully. "Tonya's out with Yugi doin' god knows what. And Sapphire, well…you're her best friend. Did she go out earlier?"

"I seem to recall her leaving at one point. Anyway, I'm sure they're all just fine. Besides, Chantal went out as well to check out the scenery. I told her to call me if something bad happened to her."

"There's a relief. If anything happened to that little twerp, Tonya would kill us."

They laughed heartily. "Yeah, that's true," agreed Jade. They glanced back at Joey and Seto. "My, that Seto Kaiba of yours sure is a looker," she commented in a undertone.

"I know," Alana replied dreamily. "But how about you? Isn't Joey nice lookin'?"

"Oh yes. I do believe I may be falling for him. My father of course would say he was the wrong type of boy for me, but my heart is telling me that Joey might be the one."

"Congratulations, Jade. I'm proud for you."

"Thanks. Look, Joey said he'd take me to dinner tonight so I gotta go. I'll see ya around, `Lonnie."

"You too." She waved goodbye as Jade told Joey that it was time to go. He and Seto threw each other dirty looks once more before the blonde left for good.

Alana waited for Seto to remember where he was and who he was with. "Um…where were we?" he asked.

"Well, I dunno about you, Seto, but I was right about here…" she trailed off as she kissed him softly on the lips again.

Ebony was enjoying herself at Duke Devlin's game shop. She had yet to see him there though. Just as she was about to leave the shop, she heard someone calling her.

"Hey! Ebony!" She turned around and gasped. It was Duke. He came running over and stopped in front of her as he caught his breath. "Almost missed you there," he said panting. "How are you?"

"Uh…fine," she replied, unsure of what else to say. What do you say to the person who invented your favorite game?

"That's good. I'd just thought we could talk for awhile or something. We didn't really get to talk much yesterday. Yugi told me that you're into Dungeon Dice Monsters so I figured that we could play a quick game or two. How `bout it?"

"Um…okay, I guess. Where do you wanna play?"

"I have an arena we can use. Don't worry though, I'll go easy on you."

"Thanks, Duke. I'll be sure to go easy on you as well."

He grinned and led her to the arena. "You ready to play, Ebony?" he asked.

"I'm as ready as I'm ever going to be," she replied and readied her dice. The game began and so far, Duke had the upper hand. But right before Ebony lost her last heart point, she summoned a powerful monster to enter a Warp Vortex. She attacked Duke's heart points in one turn, making her the winner of the match. Duke whistled in approval.

"You sure know the rules of this game, Ebony," he said shaking her hand. She tensed up. "Would you like a play-by-play strategy book that I created?" he asked.

"Sure. I'd like that." Duke smiled and took out the book to hand to her. She eagerly took it from him. "Thanks."

"You're welcome. It's nice to know that someone is as good at Dungeon Dice Monsters as I am."

Ebony blushed scarlet. She put her hands behind her back in her nervousness. "Well, I best be going. It's getting late and I have to go find Tonya's little cousin. I'll see you later, Duke."

"All right. Good night, Eb," he replied using her nickname. Just before she left out the door, he leaned over and kissed her cheek. She blushed even more as did Duke. Her ebony hair fell in her face, making her look even more attractive in Duke's eyes. Even her icy blue eyes shown with fondness as she waved goodbye.
