Monster in the Closet

“For the last time!” the spirit yelled, waving his arms around to emphasize his frustration. “There are no monsters in the closet!”

The little boy looked up at the spirit with big, bright brown eyes. Eyes that were undaunted, and not reassured.

“I’m a creature of darkness so I would know if there’s a monster in the closet,” the spirit continued, pointing toward the closet. “There are no monsters in that closet!”

“Please Bakura-sama.” Big, bright, innocent eyes stared into his own cold ones. Staring deep into his soul. He would truly be a monster if he refused such a face.

Bakura’s eye twitched and he let out an exasperated sigh. “This is the last time okay?” He walked over to the closet door he had opened twenty times already, and opened it. Clothes cluttered the hangers and toys littered the ground. No monster. “See? Nothing. Now go back to bed.”

The little boy smiled happily and laid back down in bed. “Can you read me a story?”

“No.”

“Please? Just a small one. To help me go back to bed.”

“Ryou.”

“Please?” Ryou begged, giving his best puppy dog eyes.

Bakura groaned as he sat on the little bed. Was he really becoming soft? Oh Ra, what had this kid done to him? “There once was a man who stole repeatedly from an evil, stupid, girly Pharaoh. He became the King of Thieves and killed the girly Pharaoh in the most bloodiest, painful death he could think of and ruled the land. The end.”

Ryou snuggled against the pillow before his eyes drifted back toward the closet. “Are you sure there aren’t any monsters in there?”

“Positive,” Bakura sighed, ready to get back into his soul room. “Now go to bed already. You can’t stay up all night.”

“Absolutely positive?”

“Positive,” Bakura growled, emphasizing every syllable. “Now goodnight!” He was about to return to the boys mind when Ryou grabbed a hold of his arm with wide eyes. How the boy could touch him, he had yet to figure out.

“Please check,” Ryou whispered. “One more time. Then I won’t ask anymore. Please?”

“I don’t understand what you’re problem is,” Bakura grumbled, ignoring the tug in the back of his head that was attempting to warn him of something. He walked over to the closet door and put his hand on the door knob. “I would sense if there was a monster . . .” He opened the door.

There was a hideous shriek and a ghoulish creature with six red eyes came out of the closet. It slashed its razor arms advancing on the boy, but the door was instantly closed and the monster was sucked back into the closet.

“AHHH!!!!”

Both Bakura and Ryou were huddled against the wall hugging on to one another. Bakura hadn’t expected a real monster to come out of the closet, but Ryou knew all along. The spirit could sense the smugness in his scream.

“Ryou!” The boys father came running in his sons room to find Ryou huddled in the corner holding onto air. He immediately ran over to the boy. “Are you alright?”

“Th-there’s a monster in the closet!” Ryou squeaked, pointing a shaking finger toward the door.

The let out a small sigh. “Son, there’s no such thing as monsters. And they sure don’t hide out in your closet. Watch. I’ll show you.” He walked toward the door in what seemed like slow motion.

“NO!” Ryou and Bakura screamed at the man. However, the man couldn’t hear Bakura’s shouts and Ryou’s were ignored.

“See? There’s no monster in the closet.” The man opened the door revealing a normal closet. No abnormalities and definitely nothing left of the monster that had just tried to eat the two.

For a moment, Bakura thought he had just imagined things. Maybe there really was no monster in the closet?

Ryou, on the other hand, wasn’t convinced. “It’s going to get us!” he sobbed, turning toward Bakura for comfort, which looked like he was hugging the wall or air to his father.

The man shook his head, not knowing what to do or say to convince his son otherwise. The solution came in a very different way. The same creature that had shown itself only moments before howled as it came out again, eager for revenge.

“HOLY-!” Ryou’s father shut the door, trapping the monster inside the closet, and leaned against it. His face was pale and he was breathing heavily.

“I told you there was a monster in the closet,” Ryou stated matter-of-factly. Once again, the spirit could sense the smugness in the boys voice. Was this little kid just pretending to be an angel to get what he wanted?

Ryou’s father stumbled over to Ryou and picked him up. “We’re getting out of here. Now!” He ran out of the room down towards the kitchen, Bakura following suit.

“What are you doing?” Ryou questioned sweetly, as his father set him down on the counter.

“We’re staying the kitchen,” his father replied, grabbing a frying pan just incase the monster tried to get in. “That thing won’t get us here!”

Bakura rolled his eyes and walked over to Ryou, who was staring at cabinets oddly. “What’s wrong?”

His eyes turned toward the spirits with wide eyes. “I think there’s a monster in the cabinet. Can you check please?”
