New Rules, New Game
Episode 4: Dangerous Mind
"Put the puzzle down, Yug. You need to rest that wrist."
"Aww, okay." At Lance's insistence, Yugi shuffles his new puzzle back into its bag. "I think I've figured it out."
"Yeah? What's it supposed to be?"
"It's definitely a pyramid like I thought, but I was referring to the pattern the pieces must go in."
"Damn, no wonder that thing's a pain. Regular puzzles give me a headache, I won't even attempt the 3-D ones!" The small boy laughs.
"It's not so hard." He ties the bag to his belt. "I'm going out for a while, okay?"
"Stay away from the X-geeks' manor."
"Ha~i."
~ ~ ~
//"Look, Yugi! They have Duel Monsters! We could play them in a game!"//
"I'm not really feeling up to it, Yami..."
//"...What's wrong?"//
"I...it's just...it reminds me too much of home."
//"I understand, Hikari."// Yugi smiles softly.
"It's been a while since you called me that."
//"Has it?"//
"Hai."
//"Then I shall have to make sure I call you that more often."// Yugi giggles.
"You're so sweet."
Yugi enters the park, glancing at the diversity of people enjoying the sunny day. "It's nice here."
//"That tree looks like a good place for a nap."//
"I agree." The small teen happily sits under the large leafy plant, leaning comfortably against the smooth bark. It's not long before the warmth of the afternoon sun soothes him to sleep.
"Oh please. If that was me, Ah'd smacked `im un good."
"You're always like, so totally violent, Rouge," complains Kitty. Jeans laughs to herself as her friends start to trade little insults.
"Girls, girls, no need for that. It's a beautiful day! Let's enjoy it!"
"Like, yeah! I hear an ice cream calling my name!" Rouge rolls her eyes and follows the other two.
"Huh? Hey, guys!" The pair stops and looks to where the pale mutant is pointing.
"It's Yugi..." states Jean, Miss Obvious.
"Aww, he like, looks so cute like that." Kitty giggles to herself
"Hey, Jean. This could be our big chance," comments the energy-absorbing girl.
"What do you mean?"
"Ah mean dig `round in his head an' see what's he's all `bout."
"You're not serious!"
"An' why not?"
"We shouldn't use our powers that way. It's not what the Professor is teaching us."
"So we should `ust let Kurt git hurt `cause of `im?"
The redhead pauses. It's true that if they can prove that Yugi's bad news, then Kurt will stay away from him and be safe. She sighs and takes a seat under a nearby tree. "Alright."
With the other girls as look out, Jean carefully probes into Yugi's sleeping mind.
She's never been in a mind quite like this. No matter how complex or simple a person is their minds have the same basic template, a long corridor with many doors. However, Yugi's mind is made up of only a single room with two doors on opposite sides. Yet, she can sense more beyond each...it's as if everything is divided within him.
Jean notices that one of the doors is slightly ajar, giving her a peek inside.
It's full of toys. They're everywhere!
"It's like a huge toy chest..." She had just managed to catch a glimpse of a sleeping Yugi on a four-poster bed when she has to muffle a startled yelp. Something furry just jumped into view.
"Kuu!" The mutant girl stares at the fuzzy creature floating in front of her, strangely amused at its attempts to be intimidating by narrowing large round eyes and pawing the air with tiny claws. "Ku! Kuriii! Kuu ku!" With that, the creature tugs the door closed.
"What...was THAT?"
"Kuriboh." The redhead jerks around and comes face to face with another Yugi. The dark, red eye Yugi. He chuckles, his voice low and smooth as silk. "I wasn't expecting any visitors. But please," the previously closed door swings open, "come in if you dare. My game awaits you." He slips inside his room, the entrance left unbarred.
Beckoning.
The complexity of the chamber inside nearly boggles the young woman's mind. It's like Escher meets King Tut. The tomb-like room has stairs going in all sorts of crazy directions, even upside down. The place is riddled with hallways and doors.
"Tell me, why have you come here?" Jean is quite as startled this time, in spite of the fact that the tri-color male came out of nowhere.
"To get answers."
"Answers?" Yami appears very amused. "If you truly want these answers, you'll have to play my game. Do you accept my challenge?"
She chews her lip. Jean knows it's risky, the mutant is powerful. Even if she had never seen the boy use his powers before, the raw strength permeates to her very core. "What are the conditions?"
"If you win, I'll answer anything question you ask. But if you lose, there will be a penalty game for entering my mind without permission."
"...and the game?" He smirks.
"Hide and seek."
~ ~ ~
"She's been in there like, way too long, Rouge."
"It's `ardly been five minutes." The Goth girl glares at her too perky companion.
"But..."
" `ust quiet down. She looks fine."
~ ~ ~
"Game start."
Yami disappears, leaving Jean alone. Taking a deep breath to steel herself, she opens the first door she comes to. She gasps, her reflexes saving her from being crushed by a huge stone. "This is insane." The female mutant quickly moves on, wary of more traps as she checks the halls and rooms.
For a brief instant, green eyes catch sight of silver buckles on leather. She dashes around the corner and jerks open the lone door.
The dark mutant smirks, sitting on a golden throne, just waiting for her to tag him. She rushes forward... and falls.
A scream rips from Jean's throat as pure darkness engulfs her.
~ ~ ~
"Oh my gosh! Her pulse! It's like, totally erratic!" cries Kitty. Rouge shakes Jean's body which had fallen on its side.
"Wake up! C'mon!"
"Wait! I think...it's going back to normal."
"Dammit! She needs ta hurry it up!"
~ ~ ~
Miss Grey breathes a great sigh of relief when a cloud of light catches her and lifts her back up.
"Yami! I don't know what you're doing, but release her from this game right now!"
"She's the one who trespassed," grumbles the taller teen as he snaps his fingers. "Game finish."
Jean jolts upright. Kitty and Rouge jump back in surprise. "You're awake!" Kitty hugs the older girl. "We didn't know what was happening!"
"Hey! The runt!" shouts Rouge.
"Are you okay?" Yugi's large violet eyes show concern.
"Yes...I am..."
"Please, don't ever accept one of his games. It's too dangerous."
"Yugi, what was that?" The boy looks away, reluctant to say further for some reason.
"Just please, don't accept any of the games!" He turns and runs.
"Hey!" Rouge reaches out to grab him, but Jean holds her back.
"Let him go. Things are much more complex than we thought.
"Look, I like, don't know what's going on, but can we go back to the manor now?"
"Sounds good to me, Kitty. I have a headache from everything."
"What was it like in there, Jean?"
"Dangerous."
~ ~ ~
Yugi curls up on his bed, sniffling softly.
//"Aibou...? Have I upset you that much...?"//
"No, Yami...it's not that."
//"Then what's wrong?"// The feel of ghostly arms wraps around Yugi's slim body.
"I...I'm sorry...I'm just being a wimp."
//"No, Hikari, you're not. Please, tell me what's wrong."//
"It's just...it feels wrong to attack them. I can't believe they're bad."
//"It's alright, Aibou. My dear Hikari."// Lips brush over his temple. //"Get some rest. Then we can work on the puzzle, alright?"// Yugi sniffles again but nods.
"Alright." He snuggles deeply into his blankets and relaxes.
Yami watches over his smaller half. His Hikari is so fragile, like glass.
"I will protect you, Aibou."
Yeah, I know. It's been pretty much forever. I got hit with writer's block pretty damn hard and I have the crack in my skull to prove it. >X_X<
But I seem to be back now! Yay! I hope ya'll enjoyed this!
