Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Nightmare ❯ Mutou ( Chapter 3 )
(Ya know, I don't think I have any notes to type here, except to, once again, ask for help with this fic's title. Maybe I'll make it a contest. I don't know what I would give as a prize, though....)
-~^~-
"Get up!" Chichiue calls through the door.
"Up!" I call back, sitting up in bed. I glance over at Seto, who was sharing a room with me. He has pulled his pillow over his ears and was still sleeping. "Seto!" I call over to him.
"Lemme sleep just five more minutes..." Seto mumbles, barely audible beneath the pillow.
"Get up." I grumble, getting out of bed. I walk over and open the door, my way of telling Chichiue that I'm awake and he doesn't need to get a cup of water. He did that to me once, poured a cup of cold water on my head to get me up. I learned not to try and sleep in. I glance back at Seto. No change. "If he catches you like that, he'll pour cold water on your head." I warn dryly. "And I ain't gonna stop him if he tries. I'll be checking on Mokuba-chan." Then I leave him alone.
I knock on Mokuba's door lightly. "Mokuba-chan? Are you awake?" I ask softly. We have to drop Mokuba off at the nursery, since he's still too young for school, and Chichiue doesn't want him left in the house alone.
Mokuba's door opens and blinks up at me. "Ohayo..." He mumbles.
I smile. "Ohayo."
"Ohayo." Seto grumbles, coming over to us. "Would he really pour water on my head?"
"Wanna sleep in long enough to find out?"
"I'll take that as a yes." Seto moans. I smirk as Seto turns to his brother. "You need help getting ready?"
Mokuba shakes his head. "I'm fine. Go get dress, Oniisama." Then he closes his door on us.
"Come on." I drag Seto back to our room. "If I'm late because of you, you'll have a whole lot more to worry about than a cup of cold water."
-~*~-
"Seto!" I hiss for the third time. Seto's head jerks up and he blinks, tired. He'd stayed up late, I knew.
"Whazzit..." Seto glances up at the teacher, who is giving him a stern look.
"Yagami-kun, do try and stay awake." Sensei calls sharply.
"Gomen..." Seto mumbles as the class snickers.
I feel bad for him. This class is boring, and I'd be falling asleep too, but I brought a small notebook with me. I like to sketch in it, so I always have it.
Sensei looks up at the clock. "It's time for lunch break anyway. Get." He orders, then turns away from us.
I stand, grabbing Seto's hand. "Come on!" Seto gives me a blank look. "Seto, wake up."
Seto blinks at me. "Can't I just stay in here and sleep?"
I rolls my eyes. "No. You need to eat."
"Problems?" One of the bigger boys in the class walks over. He failed last year, and thinks he's better than everyone. He's the bully in our class.
"Nerg, go away." I grumble.
"You will address me as Nerg-sama. We've been over this." Nerg tells me.
I give him a sharp look. "Last time we `went over this', you ended up with a bloody nose. Scram." I growl.
"Hey, I'm here to help, Kaiba-kun." Nerg snickers.
"Your help is not needed." I point out in annoyance. I can't stand Nerg! In fact, I don't think anyone can.
"His help can find it's way out the door." Seto agrees. He gives the older boy an annoyed look. "You're voice is annoying. Go away." Then he puts his head back on his desk, looking like he was about to go to sleep again.
"Seto!" I cry, exasperated. "Get up." I tug on his arm.
"Does the word tired have any meaning to you?!" Seto cried, glaring at me.
"Not during school. Sleeping is for when it's dark out. Get up." I tell him.
"Oh, let him sleep." A small voice says from near the back of the room. I look up. It's Mutou Yuugi, the shiest kid I know. He gets beat up a lot. "I can keep an eye on him."
I groan, giving up. "Fine." I put Seto's lunch on his desk. "Try and find time to eat. I'll be back after lunch." I glance up at Yuugi. "Arigatou, Mutou-kun."
Yuugi shrugs. "It's the least I can do, after you helped me out yesterday."
"Oh, yeah... I did, didn't I...?" I mumble, leaving the room. I hear Yuugi's soft laugh as I walk down the hall.
-~*~-
When I get outside, I make a beeline for the tree by the fence, but a hand grabs me and spins me around. I throw my hands up in defense and glance at the boy who'd grabbed me. It is one of the older kids in the school. A bully that even I don't care to mess with. "What do you want?" I ask watching him sharply.
The boy smirks. "A little bet I made. I bet this kid in your class that you couldn't make a basket, even if you tried."
I blink. This has happened in the past. Someone has made a bet against my skills. "What are the terms?"
"If you make the basket, one of the kid's wimpy friends is no longer a punching bag. If you miss, the kid himself becomes a punching bag."
I frown and glance over at the court. Seto smiles and waves at me, Yuugi beside him. I gape at them. "Seto! What are you thinking?!" I shout at him.
"You gonna try, or are you gonna let me become a punching bag?" Seto asks calmly.
I storm over to the court and take the ball from him. "Your idiot ideas are gonna get you killed, you know." I warn, walking over to where the other boy points for me to stand and aim from.
"Remember to aim." Seto teases.
I give him a death look. "I should miss on purpose." I growl at him, judging the distance between me and the basket.
Seto gives me a shocked look. "You wouldn't!" He gasps. I can tell he's being silly.
"Throw the damn ball, Kaiba-kun!" The older boy shouts.
I glare at him. "I'm aiming."
"Like you'd ever make it in, aiming or not!" Nerg laughs.
I smirk. "Nerg, what would you give me if I were to make this in?" I inquire, looking over at him.
Nerg gapes at me. "I dunno."
"Think on it." I suggest, then turn back to the basket. ~Okay, Noa, calm down. Stress is bad. Don't get stressed out about this. You know you can make the basket. Just remember what Seto taught you, and aim.~ I tell myself. I take a deep breath, then release the ball.
The net let's out a `swish' as the ball goes through. "No way!" Nerg shouts.
I smile at Seto, and he smiles back. "You've learned how to aim, at least." He teases.
I roll my eyes. "I should have kept my mouth shut." Seto laughs. I turn to Nerg. "Well?"
"What do you want?" Nerg growls, grinding his teeth.
"How about you leaving Seto, Mutou-kun, and me alone and, when one of us tells you to go away, you do." I suggest.
Nerg lets out a defeated growl. "Fine."
I walk over to Seto and Yuugi, smiling. "That felt good!"
Seto laughs again, and Yuugi smiles. "Arigatou, both of you." Yuugi mumbles. "How can I ever thank you..."
"Yuugi-kun, you can thank me by stopping asking how you can thank me." Seto grumbles.
"Mutou-kun, you don't have any friends, do you?" I ask.
Yuugi blinks in surprise. "No..."
"That's sad." Seto shakes his head.
I give Seto an annoyed look. "You don't have any friends, either." I point out.
"What about you and Mokuba-chan?" Seto whines.
"We're your brothers, baka."
"Wait, you two are brothers?!" Yuugi exclaims.
"Adopted." I nod.
"That's cool..." Yuugi sighs.
"Hey, Yuugi, do ya wanna be my friend?" Seto asks.
"Sure!" Yuugi smiles brightly.
"Now, that's not fair." I complain.
"You have plenty of friends, Noa." Seto pokes me.
I smack at his hand. "But you helped Yuugi out!! That's cheating!"
"No more cheating than I'm sure you did, eh, Noa?"
"It's not my fault everyone wants to be my friend!"
"No one's asked to be my friend because of your father." Seto gave me a sour look.
"What's your last name, Seto?"
"Oh, yeah..."
"You've insulted my opinion of the brains I thought you had. Apologize."
"To you? Never!"
"Evil..." I grumble.
Yuugi giggles. "You two are so silly!!" Seto and I share a smile. "Noa, I'll be your friend too." Yuugi tells me.
"That would be great." I smile at him.
"Yeah! I have friends!" Yuugi cheers. "Hey, do you two wanna come over this afternoon, after school?"
Seto glances at me, suddenly serious. "What would he say?" He asks.
I know who he is. "We're dead, if he finds out, but, as long as we're home within two hours of school's end, we'll be okay. The servants will keep their mouths shut, you can be sure of that."
"He's picking up Mokuba-chan on his way home, right?" Seto inquires.
"That's what he said this morning." I nodded. "We'll see exactly how long that will take him before we try adding that into how much time we have before we have to be home."
"Right." Seto nodded. "He might leave early, to pick Mokuba-chan up."
"He never leaves work early." I make a face. "No matter what."
"Who are you two talking about?" Yuugi asks.
"Chichiue." I shrug. "He's really uptight about some things."
"I don't want to get you two in trouble..." Yuugi mumbles.
I roll my eyes. "I can normally get myself out of most trouble, Yuugi-kun. Getting Seto out of the same trouble won't be too difficult."
"You managed it yesterday." Seto nods.
"I coulda gotten us out of that one without him losing his temper, period. If you hadn't opened your mouth..." I shook my head. "Ya know what, never mind." I see Jako at the fence. "I'll be right back." I run over to the fence. "Oi, Jako!"
"How's it going?"
"Good."
"Which one's your new bro?" Jako asks, looking over my shoulder at Yuugi and Seto.
"Brown hair."
Jako's eyes widen. "Whoa. Freaky."
I nod. "We could be twins, I know."
"Kami-sama, screw twins, you two actually look like brothers!! Your hair colors are probably the only things we could use to tell you apart!"
I smirk. "Seriously?"
"Yeah!" Jako narrows his eyes at me. "What have you got up your sleeve, Kaiba?"
"Uhm?" I give my friend an innocent look. "Nothin'."
"Riiight..." Jako rolls his eyes. "Can you make it out of the house tonight?"
"Seto, my new bro, he talked back to Chichiue last night. I don't wanna chance it."
Jako rose an eyebrow. "Your bro's got guts. Did your pop threaten the you-know-what?"
"Out loud. Seto almost didn't make it unscathed." I sigh. "All he got was a sore cheek."
"Shit! Your pop hit him on his first day?!" Jako gapes at me, unbelieving.
"I'm hoping Seto will know better than to talk back next time." I say dryly.
Jako snickers. "Hope so. Keep him safe. I wanna meet him when he's still in one piece."
"I'll try." I nod.
"Be good, Noa." Jako winks, then takes off down the sidewalk.
I walk back over to Seto and Yuugi. "Who were you taking to?" Seto frowns.
"One of my other friends." I shrug. "I was planning on taking you out to meet him and the others today, but we agreed it would be a bad idea."
"Why?"
"Chichiue." I nod at the teacher. "Break's over, by the way."
"Oh well." Seto sighs and we walk in together.
-~*~-
"Here's my home." Yuugi points at Kame Game Shop.
"I knew I recognized your name!" Seto exclaims, looking at the shop.
I snicker. "You're so slow, Seto."
"I'm slow?! You're the one who couldn't play basketball!"
"How does that make me slow?!"
"Your gym teacher tried to teach you, yes?" Seto looks at me. I nod. "Was he a bad teacher, or were you just slow?"
"You two argue too much." Yuugi makes a face at us, then leads us into the shop. "Ojiisan! I'm home!"
Mutou Sugoroku looks up from behind the counter. "Yuugi-chan, who are these two?"
"These are my new friends! Kaiba Noa, and Yagami Seto!" Yuugi say cheerfully.
I nod to the older man politely. Seto smiles. "Pleased to meet you."
"And you both." He nods to me. "Kaiba, eh?"
I sigh. "I told you, my last name gets me into trouble." I look at Seto.
Seto smirks. "Ah, I'm glad I'm not a Kaiba!"
"Are too."
Seto makes a face. "I'm not know as one, then. Ra..."
"Humph!"
Yuugi giggles nervously. "They always fight like that, Ojiisan. Don't mind them." He looks back at us. "Come on! I'll show you the house!"
We follow Yuugi around the living part of the house, then go up to his room, which is quite plain. He pulls down a gold box and sets it on his desk. Seto becomes interested immediately. "Egypt!" He cries, leaning over to get a better look at the writings on the side of the box.
I snicker. "Seto, you're hopeless."
"Noa, it's from Egypt! This is great! What's in it, Yuugi?"
Yuugi opens the box. "A puzzle of some sort. I've been working on it for a year now."
"It's difficult, then?" Seto asks, picking up a piece to get a better look at it. "Oh, I see. It's a 3D puzzle. Interesting. I wonder what it will look like when it's done."
"I promise I'll show you once it is done." Yuugi promises. Then he glances at the time. "Don't you two have to be heading home now?"
I glance over at the clock. "Oh, yeah..." I grab my bag from the floor next to me. "Come on, Seto. We don't want him catching us out of the house." I scrunch up my face.
Seto laughs and grabs his own bag. "I'm coming. We'll see you later, Yuugi."
"K. Ja!" Yuugi waves as we descend the stairs.
"Ja ne, Ojiisan." Seto says politely when we see Sugoroku.
Sugoroku smiles. "Ja." We hurry home.
