Lauren was getting nervous -- the night of the KaibaCorp. ball was drawing near, she was quite sure there were going to be a lot of reporters there who were going to try and catch a glimpse of the rich CEO's "girlfriend" and it was all over school that she and Seto were supposedly dating. Seto had explained to her what the ball was about and she was sure that she would fall asleep during all of the "if I were CEO of KaibaCorp" speeches. She fell down onto her bed, grabbing a purple beanie bear Alison had gotten her for one of her birthdays a few years ago. She adored the colour purple; her entire room was the colour [if you could see anything under the pictures of anime hotties she'd cut up and stuck on with bluetack] and so were her sheets.

/Yami?/

//Yes, aibou?//

/I'm not sure if I should go through with the date./

The ancient Pharaoh appeared beside her, crimson orbs blinking before sitting down next to her, crossing his legs Indian-style. "Why don't you listen to that song you like? It could help."

Lauren rolled over onto her side, brow furrowing in confusion. "Which one? I have several I like, Yami." She smiled inwardly, remembering when she had introduced him to the stereo and her "depressing" set of hard rock CDs. He said music hadn't sounded like that back in Egypt and hadn't been that loud. "Well, tough shit, Yami. This is the twentieth century so get used to it." Those had been her exact words to him.

"That one......um, Listen To Your Heart I think it was called. The only modern song I like, too."

"Oh, the one by Roxette [1]? That does sound a little like my situation and songs do help me think things through properly." She nodded and got off her bed, going over to her stereo before finding the right tape and putting it in. She couldn't believe the modern clothes he had chosen from her wardrobe. Tight black leather. Yami said it brought in heat and, since Tasmania was relatively colder than Egypt, had decided it was the best thing to wear. Lauren had never worn them anyway [A/Ns; I don't even HAVE tight leather in my wardrobe] -- it had been a joking gift from her friends one year. She wore the neckbelt they'd given her though, but the leather was going to waste in the bottom of her closet.

Another situation she'd found amusing was when Yami had been introduced to cars, buses and the like. He'd nearly died twice when he went out onto the road to get something she'd dropped and the cars had started again. He had glared at her when she began laughing at him.

The song ended and Lauren had made up her mind.

She was going.

******************** -- a couple of days later -- ********************

She sighed as her mother continued to fix her purple silk dress and her father lectured her about dates. Lauren adjusted her glasses -- they had finally noticed her as somebody when they were told she was "dating" one of the richest teenagers in the world. It was......nice for a change. The millennium puzzle was tucked away under her dress and thrown over her back to sneak it past her parents. Hopefully Yami wasn't too much of a hentai. Seto had told her they were taking his little brother with them so it wouldn't seem like a date or anything. She liked Mokuba; he was about the only kid she actually liked.

There was the sound of a knock on the door and she shooed her parents away before walking over to it. //Have fun, aibou.// Yami had promised to stay quiet for the night and only come out if she was in trouble, which point factor was a million to nil. She opened the door and smiled at Mokuba, nodding hello before stepping out and closing it, following the energetic thirteen-year-old towards the limo.

"Big brother's been nervous," Mokuba stated as he practically skipped along in front of her. "He's been getting those bad vibes about tonight but I told him it would be okay."

"So why are you coming with us, Mokuba? Not that I mind, of course, someone to keep me company during those long, boring speeches," Lauren said as she brought the puzzle out from her dress and around to the front.

"Big brother doesn't trust me by myself, plus there are people who want to separate us like they wanted to at the orphanage."

'That's right, Seto said he and Mokuba were adopted.' She nodded a thanks to the driver who held the door open. 'And I'll bet the separation would be a kidnapping. Poor kid, must be hard having such a famous brother.' "Hi, Seto," she greeted as she sat down across from him and Mokuba sat between them.

"Hello." Blue eyes looked her over. "You, um, it must be because of the moonlight but......you look beautiful." He turned away, cheeks a pinkish colour. For the millionth time in her life she was glad her hair covered her ears. They felt the car beginning to move.

"Thanks. You look......handsome." Lauren adjusted her glasses once more, the blush spreading lightly to her cheeks before disappearing. The rest of the ride was quiet before they got to the West Point [A/Ns: A restaurant in my town that's also able to hold functions]. The driver opened a door and Seto got out first before extending his hand, which she took before stepping out with Mokuba following not too far behind.

"So how many people are there fighting for your position, Seto?" she asked as he took her arm and led her inside, Mokuba walking along beside his brother. She ignored the flashes of the cameras from the reporters for now but if she ever saw her picture in the paper, she was going to wring their necks when she found out who took it.

"A lot from the company, but some are from overseas as well. KaibaCorp has branches all over the world which is why we get things done so much faster than some others," he explained before they entered the main room. It was lavishly decorated, ribbons and streamers hanging everywhere along with a few bouquet of flowers here and there. There were a lot of older couples as well and Seto stopped every so often to shake their hands and talk a little.

Lauren glanced over at Mokuba. "Why do I get the feeling we're the only teenagers here?" He only grinned at her before winking and heading over to the buffet. She blushed a little when she began to realize she'd left him alone with his brother on purpose.

"Ah, Kaiba-boy, so glad to see you," drawled an American accent. Lauren looked over to the newcomer and groaned softly, shaking her head. Great. Alison would flip if she knew her best friend had been in the same room as Pegasus J. Crawford. The girl had a strange fascination with the duel monster creator.

"Oh hello, Mr. Crawford."

"Please, Kaiba-boy, we've known each other for too long. Call me Pegasus," the silver-haired man stated calmly, moving some hair away from a crimson eye. He smiled slightly when he saw the girl with him and his one visible eye widened when he saw the millennium puzzle hanging around her neck. "And who is this lovely lady?"

Lauren managed to repress a shudder. She was starting to get a bad feeling about this night and it was all revolving around Pegasus. Seto took her arm gently. "I don't believe you've met my girlfriend yet. Allow me to introduce you to Lauren Angel, one of my school's most talented students."

Pegasus took her hand and kissed the back of it before she abruptly pulled away. "True to her last name, she is quite an angel." 'Ah, young love. Oh, Milliena [1], how I miss you so...... But with her millennium puzzle, I may yet be able to get you back into my arms once more......'

Lauren only laughed darkly, startling them both. "I may look like it on the outside, Mister Pegasus, but on the inside I'm defiantly no angel. My heart's cold from being betrayed by so-called friends too many times."

Seto glanced at her. "Where's Mokuba?"
"Over at the refreshment table. I'll go get him while you chat to Mister Pegasus." She waved a small goodbye before turning and heading over to the younger boy. Mokuba looked up at her as she came over.

"Can't stand him either?" She nodded and he shrugged, finishing off his small piece of cake. "That was why I left. Big brother says he's a good business partner but I don't like him one bit. Sorry to run off on you like that."

"Don't worry, I know the feeling." Lauren took a small meat pie and took a bite before continuing. "My friend Alison's totally obsessed with the guy; you should see her room! I just don't understand how she can like such a creep."

Mokuba wiped his hands with the napkin before tossing it into a garbage bin they were near. He smiled, digging around in his back pocket before dragging out a duel monster deck. "Wanna duel? I brought mine for the boring speeches and for something to do."

She finished off her delicacy before agreeing, taking her deck from the purple satchel she had specially handcrafted by a friend of her mother's. "Sure." She smirked and they sat on the floor, setting it up.

"Let's duel."

******************** -- a few minutes later -- ********************

"Hm, where are they?" Seto looked at his watch and then let his eyes wander back around the room. "It's almost time for the speeches." He felt a tap on his shoulder and looked towards Pegasus who pointed over to a small crowd of older adults. "Thanks." The tall brunette shook his hand before going over and weaving his way through the crowd that had formed around his brother and his girlfriend. He felt himself blush at the thought. They were just acting......weren't they?

"I attack with Gaia; the Fierce Knight!" he heard Lauren's voice.

He heard Mokuba laugh. "I defend with Dark Witch and attack with Red Eyes Black Dragon."

Seto shook his head. 'I told Mokuba not to bring his dueling deck. Seems like the kid didn't listen to me......again.' He bent over and tapped his little brother on the head. "Hey, you two, enough of that. It's almost time."

"But, Seto, I was winning!" Mokuba whined, pouting. A resounding "Aw" was heard from the older people. Lauren only laughed, shaking her head before putting her deck away.

"He's right, kiddo. And besides, I let my opponents think they're winning before going in for the kill."

"Don't call me that!"

"What? Kiddo? It suits you." Mokuba sighed and placed his deck back into his pocket, standing. "And besides, you are a kid." She ruffled his hair before standing and taking Seto's arm, the trio walking over to the main table.

Mokuba grinned at her once they were seated, fisting his hand into a thumb's up. "Thumb wrestle?"

Lauren adjusted her glasses and her fist joined his, pressing her thumb against his own. "You're on!" Seto sighed and sweat-dropped, sitting down next to Lauren and watching with amusement as she won easily over his little brother.

Pegasus, meanwhile, was studying the girl's actions carefully and going through her mind's thoughts and memories. 'What she said was true; she's been betrayed so many times she's forgotten how to love, how to trust. Her parents don't seem to care about her and she doubts her friends. Maybe Kaiba-boy is helping her find her way back to the light, but I also see another holds her affections. Hm......a Pharaoh from the lost pages of ancient Egypt inhabits the puzzle? Incredible! But quite soon, that puzzle will be mine......'

The reason for the ball began [with Lauren and Mokuba's thumb wrestling going on in the background] and it wasn't long before the night was nearly over and it was Seto's turn to make his speech. Lauren and Mokuba stopped their thumb wrestling to pay attention to his as his name was called and he began walking towards the podium [A/Ns: I've forgotten what the hell those things are called ^.^;;]. There was a sudden flash of bright light and everyone had to shield his or her eyes.

Everyone except for Pegasus.

Lauren lowered her arms, brown eyes widening beneath her glasses as she abruptly stood from her seat and ran over to where Seto's body was laying, closely followed by his little brother who dropped down onto his knees and slid forward while she knelt and pulled the brunette's head onto her lap, lightly slapping his cheeks. Mokuba looked at her with watery eyes.

"Wha-what happened to him? What happened to big brother??"

She shook her head, hair falling into her eyes. "I......I don't know, Mokuba. He's......he's alive but unconscious."

//Aibou!//

Lauren jerked her head up, allowing the black-haired thirteen-year-old to see the tears cascading down her cheeks. /Yami?! What......what happened to Seto?/

//I sense another item at work here.// There was silence for a moment between them before she heard her ancestor gasp. //The millennium eye!//

/The millennium eye? I've heard of it, but I don't know what it does./

//The millennium eye can take people's souls and place them somewhere else. Sort of like what the millennium ring does, only the eye places people's souls in inanimate objects.// She felt him frown. //It was Pegasus!//

Lauren gave Mokuba his elder brother before standing and pushing her way out of the crowd that had formed around the three, eyes hardening when she saw the man responsible. "PEGASUS!" There was another bright flash of light, this one coming from her own item and her forehead before she transformed in front of everyone. Everyone stared at her while she pointed at him, crimson-coloured eyes glaring intensely. "WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS?! WHY DO YOU WANT SETO'S SOUL?!"

Pegasus's one eye was widened, looking the girl over. Mere seconds ago she had been wearing a purple evening dress. Now she was in something that possible could have come from ancient Egypt. He then smiled calmly before taking something from a bodyguard and placing it on the table. Two magenta gloves with rims and two sets of two stars along with four cards. "If you want him back, Angel-girl, come to Duelist Kingdom and win the tournament I'm hosting three days from now. Both you and Mokuba-boy have a chance at winning his soul back." He showed her the once-blank card he'd brought with him and he smiled at her anger. "Until then, Angel-girl, Mokuba-boy."

Lauren shook with rage as he left, crimson-coloured orbs flashing hatred. 'I'll win him back alright, Crawford. And when I do, you'll wish you'd NEVER been born!'
