Chapter 1: Ancient Egypt ::Part 1:: Slave Trade
***Maru's POV***
I can't believe this! It is an outrage, how dare they! Incompetent fools, what could be more important that me? I am very hungry and that is not something that I can stand, or should have to! I have my own servants, WHERE ARE THEY!
I must calm down, it isn't dignified for a lady of my standing to get angry. All I need to do is go to the throne room, the pharaoh will get someone to feed me. Or the high priest if I can find him. None of them understand how hard my life is! If I need food I practically need to yell to be heard, and they keep trying to give me a bath, water is evil! I don't feel like getting up though, too sleepy.
I yawn, my tongue sticking out as I do so. A nap would be nice, yes a nap, food can wait....
***Normal POV***
The grayish-blue cat drifted off to sleep just as a grand celebration was getting underway, celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the joining of Upper and Lower Egypt. That explained the sudden disappearance of all the servants. Every high standing official was attending the grand celebration in the capital, Abedju, hosted by Pharaoh Yami. Every high standing official but one, as the high priest Seito was forced to pick the newest crop of slaves imported from all around the known world.
It was rumored that some of the slaves had skin the color of ivory and that if they stayed outside for too long their skin would turn the color of fire.
***Seito's POV***
"Bring in the slaves," I say to the pudgy trader. He scrambles away to do so. My word is law, very few are of a higher authority than me. That pharaoh being one, one day he shall fall by my hand, that is certain. In the meantime I pretend to be his most trusted advisor.
The sounds of the grand celebration drift in through the door that the slave trader left open. I scoff, even though I detest having to choose slaves I would rather be here than out there, being expected to be happy and to dance. A scowl is forever imprinted upon my face, until the day that Yami is dead then I shall smile but not until then.
The trader comes back with a long line of slaves, both male and female. I notice some of the paler ones. None in particular stand out until I see a very pale one. Her face is dotted with brown dots, the same color as her shoulder length hair. I turn to the trader.
"What are those dots on her face?" I ask, pointing to the girl.
"They don't have a name but they occur when she goes out into the sun for too long along with the red burns. I think they are a sign from Ra, that either she is blessed or cursed," he states.
I do not reply, but simply continue with my inspection of the slaves. Very few out of this year's crop seem suitable. In the end I pick only a few, the pale girl with spots on her face, and five others, all males.
"So few?" the slaver trader asks, scratching his head. Upon receiving my glare he begins to calculate the price. "Well... I suppose I could part with those six for around 9 gold coins.
"How about I let you leave with your life in return for these six," I state coldly, the palace could pay the outrageous price but I don't feel like going through the long process right now.
His eyes go wide for a moment then he nods. "A...as you wish," he backs off and runs off dragging the remaining slaves behind him.
I call a servant who's name escapes me right now to escort all six new slaves the rooms. Their duties will be assigned to them by me later. Right now I decide to avoid the party and retire to my room.
Lying down on my silk sheets I notice that my cat, Maru, is asleep on the bed too. I would shove her off but as a priest I have a sacred duty to worship all cats. Even spoiled rotten ones like Maru. I lay in my bed for a couple hours before the sounds of celebration fade as sleep claims me.
***Samara's POV***
I shift nervously as the high priest orders Kaki, the slave trader who kidnapped me from my homeland, to leave with the other slaves. My heart weeps for Jenif, Chey, Charla, and Mand ,my best friends, whom were not chosen and would be beaten perhaps to death. My heart also weeps due to the fact that Christobal was chosen. He ,like my friends, was from my town and he was the one that murdered my younger sister. I loath him.
A bald man steps out from behind a curtain and gestures for us to follow. Once we are in a stone hallway he speaks.
"You six are now owned by the grand country of Egypt. A great honor has just been bestowed upon you. Egypt is the greatest country in the world and will be for all eternity. The five men will have a room all to themselves while the girl shall share a room with four other women. You are all expected to behave and follow orders without question, do all of you understand?" he said, all in one breath. It seems that he does this very often. All of us nod.
"Good, now the five men you have this room," he stopped and opened to door to a rather small room. "Girl your room is the last one in the hallway on the right,"
I look down the hallway. It seems to go on forever, yet way down the hallway I can barely make out the end where a mini palm tree is in a pot. It takes me a shorter time than expected to reach the end. Opening the door I see a room only slightly larger than the one given to the boys. Inside are five beds, I can easily see which one is mine, it is the only one that is unoccupied by an Egyptian girl.
They ignore me as I walk over to the smallest bed and sit down. Soon sleep overcomes me as I wonder what will be expected of me.
***Maru's POV***
I wake up to see my master sleeping on the bed. My stomach is still empty as I stretch out my four legs. I meow loudly over and over again to try and get master's attention but he is out like a candle. What does a cat have to do to get a nice mouse around here? I thought the Egyptians worshipped us!
*End Chapter*
A/N: I hope I didn't make Seto too OOC. Well he's not really Seto but anyway. I don't know what possessed me to have some of the story told through Maru's POV. It doesn't even fit into the plot! It will later though. I'll try to post the next chapter tomorrow if you REVIEW! Also if someone would like to be my beta reader that would be appreciated.
