Chapter 8: Awakening

Joey sprang up in his bed, sweating and panting, with tears in his eyes. "…Oh, my God…" He lifted his blankets and searched underneath his bed to find his metal case still intact from the night before. 'Oh, good! It was just a dream…' He sighed, and took one specific card out--the very card that nearly escaped his box. "I'm glad that you're here, too." Joey took a deep breath, then looked up to the ceiling. "Today's the big day. It's time that I told him…"

During class break, Joey sat far from the others, immersing himself in his dream dictionary--the very one that was featured in last night's vision. 'Please let this mean he'll say yes…'

"Oh, wow!"

"Huh?" Joey turned to Yugi, who gleefully looked at a card that Tea had given him.

"It's perfect! Thanks, Tea!" The smallish teen offered his female friend a hug.

Distraught, the blonde shut his book, and moved to the window.

"Hey, what's wrong with him…?" Tea wondered.

"Um, Joey…" Yugi nervously approached his companion. "Are you okay…?"

"What…?" the taller one glanced at his innocent pal and blushed. "Oh! It's nothing…" He gazed sadly at the scenery again.

'Why are you like this…?' Yugi shyly backed away. 'Are you ignoring me…?'

'Will there ever be a good time to tell you how I feel today…?'

On his way home, Joey stopped at a bridge in the park. He often called it his "Secret Hideaway", for it was located at a secluded creek, and surrounded by an abundance of greenery. He found this a perfect time to hide here, because he didn't want anyone to see him crying.

'Today wasn't my day after all. Knowing my luck, I don't think I'll ever be able to tell Yugi that I love him…' Joey choked and sniffled in shame. He held a card with two fingers, getting ready to flick it in the water. 'I guess it's too late. I should've known he'd want to be with someone else…'

"Joey…?" A quiet voice called.

"Y-Yugi!" The taller young man spun around to see his crush. He hid the article in one of his pockets. "W-what are you doin' here?"

"I-I'm worried about you, Jou," Yugi replied. "You've been avoiding me all day… Is something wrong? D-do you… not like me anymore…?"

"Uh, actually, Yug, it's not that at all," Joey reddened and averted his gaze. "It's quite the opposite…"

Yugi blushed too. "What do you mean by that…?"

Joey sighed deeply. If the object of his affection was right here, he had to say it now. But he was still too nervous to reveal all of his emotions right away. So, he decided to give a lengthy explanation first. "You see, it kinda has something to do with a dream I had last night."

"Was I in it?"

"Yeah… you see my cards were stolen, and you and I, and Tristan and Tea went to this hotel…"

"I think I had a dream like that," interrupted Yugi. "Did I get in for free?"

"Y-yeah…" Joey was a little surprised. How did Yugi know all this…? "Well, anyway, It was a pretty nice-lookin' place… But the room we stayed in was crap…"

"I did have my diary with me right…? And, did I go to a bookstore?"

"Yeah, you did!" Joey replied. "And you bought a dream dictionary--the same one I have, right?!"

'Did Joey have the same exact dream that I had…? This is strange…' Yugi thought. "Yeah, cause of the odd dreams I've had in that very same dream! So, what else happened?"

"Well, I remember pulling you out of there, cause everyone else had left… Then we went to bed…"

"…And you said some pretty dirty things about me in your sleep!" The shorter boy finished, turning red.

"And, you couldn't sleep, either! And there were some creepy guys…"

"Like Baka-man?"

"Yeah! Then, we uh, started getting… closer…" Joey blushed.

"Uh huh… You talked in your sleep again, and said that you loved me…"

"Yeah, I did…" The two young men neared closer to each other.

"I… started to get a… crush on you…" Yugi looked down, very embarrassed.

"The same thing happened to me, with you…"

"And, we were hypnotized…"

"And, I almost drowned…"

"…But then, I saved you."

"And, you sang to me…" Yugi coyly took a step towards Joey.

"Yeah. That awful song…" Joey leaned on the railing, gazing dreamily at his cute partner. "We fell in love, didn't we…?"

"Yes we did. We kissed…"

"And, we had a pretty racy moment together…"

"Uh, Jou, did we…?" Yugi blushed a deeper crimson.

"No," Joey interjected. "…But it was still pretty racy…"

Yugi grew a little more solemn. "But I remember looking for you. I found you in a chamber, and had to rescue you…"

"Our friends died…" Joey's face became despondent.

"…And so did we…"

The fluffy blonde turned to his friend, and lay assuring brown eyes upon him. "…But at least we died… together."

"Well, if we had the same dream last night, then does that mean we're meant for each other…?"

Joey gasped, feeling his heart jump in his chest.

…But Yugi laughed as if it was a joke. Joey chuckled softly as well. Maybe now wouldn't be the time to give him his message…

"Actually, Joey…" Yugi took a deep breath and nervously faced his best friend. There's something I kinda wanted to talk to you about, and it definitely does have something to do with that dream…"

"Really?" Joey shakily cleared his throat. "I wanted to tell you something today, too. I just mentioned the dream to you because… well, I think I had it cause I… was thinking about you… a lot lately, and… what I have to say really does have something to do with you." He reached in his pocket for the card he held.

Yugi produced the card that Tea gave him, and showed it to Joey. "H-here, Jou. I want you t-to have this, b-because I…" He stammered. After an awkward pause, Yugi swallowed hard, and finished his sentence. "I really do have a crush on you."

Joey stared in awe at the dueling card. Its name was "Tanabata Star". It featured a man and a woman in kimonos, clasping hands in the heavens. "Th-this is so weird…" he exhaled. "We had the same dream last night, and…" he took Yugi's present out of his pocket. "…We have the same card!"

"You were gonna give that to me…? Perhaps this is more than a coincidence--It's fate." Yugi smiled up at his golden-haired crush. "I had no idea you already had it when Tea bought it for me…"

"She bought my present?!"

"Are you jealous, Joey?" Yugi giggled. "She got it for me cause I was too embarrassed to get it myself. You know she's dating Tristan…"

"Sorry… I was so worked up, that I forgot…" Joey then seriously focused on his spikey-haired crush. "Anyway, Yugi… I also came to say… I like you--as more than a friend."

"You do…?" Butterflies fluttered in Yugi's stomach.

"I do." The two exchanged gifts and threw themselves into a tight embrace.

"Do you love my other self…?" Yugi whispered.

"Yes, I do." Joey lifted the chained puzzle and kissed it. "I love every part of you. No matter who you are, you still make me happy."

Yugi clutched his tall love by the waist. "Thank you, Joey… Aishiteru…"

"Listen," Joey bent down to his beloved. "From my book, that dream tells us that there will be rough times ahead, and reality is unkind. But our relationship is still very powerful…" He swept Yugi off his feet and pressed his mouth against his own.

The boys sweetly caressed one another, and passionately deepened the kiss, tongues interloping with each other. Joey and Yugi held themselves closer, both out of affection and for fear that they may lose balance.

Their lips slowly parted after what seemed like an eternity. "Joey…" Yugi said softly and breathlessly, "Reality isn't so unkind."

<3_<3 Aww! A happy ending!!! *applause* And you thought they were goners… ;) Like I'd disappoint my audience! For my first Yu-Gi-Oh fanfiction, this is actually my most popular! I love you reviewers! <3_<3 And lots of things didn't go as planned! I originally wanted this to be a cute romantic comedy, but then I wanted a plot that was more than just Joey and Yugi falling in love. Now, I have rapist bad guys, sexy lime, and loads of angst and suspense in-between the funny and fluffy parts. And can you believe that this was supposed to be a one-shot?! XD Then, I had to add chapters! And now, I have over twice as many chapters as I had intended (Almost three times if you're from Kyokou Geemu)! You know, I can almost see this whole thing playing out as a movie! Speaking of that, MediaMiner people, I know the ending was kind of disappointing, but there will be a sequel (The KG and FF.net reviewers have been bugging me for one…)!

About the card… I made it up. "Tanabata" is the name of a legend of lovers in Japan--a weaver and a shepherd to be exact. When their relationship got in the way of their duties, it was said that the two were turned into stars and were separated at opposite ends of the Milky Way. July 7 is said to be the day that they meet once each year. I'm such a sucker for romance… <3_<3 (Info from Clamp School Detectives, published in English by Tokyopop.)

Wanna know an interesting story? I got this idea when I was taking an online quiz at SelectSmart.com. I was looking at my number 4 or 5 result (can't remember), which was Joey Wheeler/Katsuya Jounouchi and I remember it saying something like, "You tend to talk in your sleep--especially about food and pretty girls!" And I was like, "Sure… Pretty girls…" This was when my friend was trying to convince me that Joey was straight, while I was at the "Joey and Yugi would look kinda cute together" stage. I later evolved into the "Joey and Yugi should get together" stage. And started writing Chapter 1, figuring it would only be as long as my Pokemon fic, BM Meets TR. I then said, "Ah, screw it," and worked on my website. Months later (when I was in the "Dammit! Why aren't they together?!" stage), I found Kyokou Geemu, and that renewed my passion to make this JouxYugi/Yami fic, because you rarely see that couple on the web! While writing, I went to the "Those guys are practically married!" and "Why haven't they @#$%ed each other yet?!" stages. And thus, you have seen that my first Yu-Gi-Oh fanfiction is also KG's (and FF.N's) first JouxYami/Yugi fic (By the way, my number 1 result was Yugi--I didn't know being short had that effect on me… O_o).

Least favorite parts: The duel (I told you to scroll down!), bad guy's hypnosis, Joey hanging all over Baka-man (XP Eww!), when Joey slapped Yugi (;_;), Baka-man killing everyone! (>P)
