Elsewhere

Disclaimer: IF I OWNED THEM, IT WOULDN'T BE A BLOODY FANFIC!
AN: Since so many of you asked nicely, I grabbed Kaiba by the hair and beat him over the head with a frying pan to whip out this baby. Damn his recalcitrance! Damn him! *pouts*

It's really quite absurd.
It doesn't even matter to me at all.
But still - I have my brother to think about.
Frankly, I'm not sure I want Mokuba anywhere near them.
Yeah, I noticed, damn me. It's not my problem, so why should I even bother?
Though now that I think about it, it isn't Yugi's either.
Well, not a problem, at least.
He's exhibiting all the classic symptoms for being involved in an unhealthy relationship. Cutting himself off from his friends, being more quiet, grades slipping - yeah, I poked my nose into Domino High's records. Illegally. Well, it's not like anyone is gonna stop me.
Going awfully far for it being none of my business, I suppose. But really - he *did* save my brother... and me, if I can admit it to myself.
Hell. It's interesting.
Seeing what their little group is doing, I mean. I really couldn't care less who Yugi Moutu sleeps with. Some things should be private, even self-love taken to the extreme.
But it's so painfully obvious, really.
I mean, the way he looks at Yugi is... strange. I never let my unease show, naturally, but...
If anyone ever looked at Mokuba the way Yugi's yami looks at him, I'd kill them.
And it doesn't help that the yami knows that I've noticed. He notices a lot of things that Yugi doesn't.
Like the way we've all been looking at him. Much as I loathe numbering myself among the little gaggle of Yugi's friends, it seems like an us versus them situation.
...wait.
That pale-haired boy. Ryou. There's something different about him.
It's kind of funny, really. Yugi's becoming as much of a loner as I am. Except that he's never alone.
God, that sounds freaky.
Then again, who isn't used to the unusual by now?
Hell, who cares, anyway?
It's just like you hear in the hallways - "He's going out with so-and-so, can you believe it? They're so wrong for each other! I hear he doesn't let her do anything alone anymore! What a grabby jerk!"
Well, if he wants to treat his other half like property, so be it. After all, if you don't belong to yourself, who do you belong to?
Damned if I know.
It's fucking confusing. They keep going on about being such great friends, and when they see their friend falling for someone they despise, they don't do anything about it? It doesn't make sense.
Unless they're trying to protect him.
Fools.
His dark side takes care of that. Hell, his dark side takes care of him, and I don't see him complaining any. If he didn't want the attention, he'd turn his other half down. Then they could protect him. But he's given no sign of unhappiness, just the opposite. It kinda makes me wonder why they aren't happy for him. After all, he's got something most people will never have.
Friends are rare and hard to hold on to. Lovers are even harder. When you've got both rolled into one, and they're your soulmate to boot, shouldn't you be out on the streets singing their praises?
Funny that Yugi doesn't.
Hmm. Maybe he isn't so unobservant after all.
The world tends to look harshly on shady relationships. Can't get much more shady than this, I suppose.
Kinda makes me feel bad for the kid. I know his yami makes him happy.
I've seen them at lunch, Yugi cuddled contentedly into his yami's side, just talking and smiling, quiet and pleased and... well... so obviously in love that it almost hurts to watch.
Maybe I'm a little bit jealous. I don't think I'm even capable of an emotion that strong.
Then again, I didn't think Yugi's yami was, either, but I swear that's the only time I've ever seen him smile.
I might not like either of them, but I can respect their decisions. And if they're that happy together... well, I say good luck to them. Just keep the rest of us out of it.
The world's an unforgiving place.
And friends can be the harshest judges of all.
But I'm beginning to think he doesn't give a damn. Good for him. The yami certainly doesn't.
You know what?
Neither do I.
Hell... maybe I will let Mokuba keep hanging out with them. He needs more friends, even if they are a self-involved high schooler and a millenia-old dead guy. Yugi's practically his idol - next to me, of course.
And at least that way I know Mokuba will be safe. Yugi wouldn't hurt a fly. The yami can pretty much destroy any threat to anyone under his protection. So he's safer with them than anyone else, including me.
I don't have to like it.
Nobody does.
Sure, they're both my rivals. But even rivals deserve a chance at the happiness I'll never get.
...whatever.
It's his life. Let him do what he wants with it.
