~ Promises Are Forever Chapter 2: Back to Reality ~

"MOKUBA!"

Kaiba ran towards his brother. He was stopped by a paramedic's outstretched arm.

"I'm sorry sir, but you can't pass."

Kaiba stared desperately at his brother's limp form in the stretcher.

"I'm his brother you have to let me see him!"

The paramedic shook his head sadly.

"I sorry sir, but the doctors need to perform emergency surgery and they can't be distracted. However, you can go to the hospital with him."

Kaiba nodded weakly, and watched the spectacle before him. The doctors made a small incision in Mokuba's chest and inserted a long tube. Lines began to appear on the monitor close by. The doctors then placed a mask on the little boy's mouth. Kaiba couldn't watch. He turned to the paramedic beside him.

"What happened?" Kaiba inquired.

"He stopped breathing," the paramedic replayed calmly, "according to the witnesses, you brother walked out of that box thing. Apparently he had labored breathing and then collapsed. We were called shortly after and when we arrived he wasn't breathing."

" And those machines…"

"They are to help him breath. If we don't hook him up to the machines, he will die before we reach the hospital."

Kaiba returned his attention to the doctors helping his brother. They were lifting Mokuba's stretcher off the ground, apparently ready to carry it into the ambulance outside.

"Are you coming Mr. Kaiba?" one of them called.

"Yes," replied Kaiba, and he ran to catch up with the disappearing stretcher.

~~

The ride to the hospital had been long and cramped. The doctors continued to work busily on Mokuba, while Seto held his hand, stroked his hair, and told him that it would be all right. However obvious it was that Mokuba was unable to hear Kaiba, Seto wouldn't stop. It was almost as if years of hidden emotion were finally being released. They arrived at the hospital, and Mokuba was brought strait to the ER. Kaiba was asked to stay in the waiting room. Shortly after, Mokuba was transferred to the ICU where he could be hooked up to 24/7 breathing machines. Seto sat in the waiting room until a nurse came to see him.

"Mr. Kaiba, the doctor is ready to see you."

Kaiba nodded, and followed the nurse into the interview room. He sat down and faced the doctor in front of him.

"Have you figured out what's wrong with my brother?" Kaiba asked.

The doctor nodded.

"Yes, he has broken ribs."

Kaiba was shocked. How could that have happened? Then his thoughts transferred to the events of the last week, when he had beaten Mokuba (a/n see final flash back in first chapter)

(Oh my god… did I really do this to him? Is this all my fault?)

The doctor continued to flip through some medical papers on his desk.

"He must have been scared and crashed into something," the doctor continued, "because part of one of the broken ribs hit his lung and caused sever damage."

Seto just continued to stare off into.

(The death experience.)

Seto snapped back into reality, and stood up.

"Thank you," he said as he began to leave."

"The point is Mr. Kaiba, Mokuba is now in a coma, and were not sure if he's going to make it back…"
