Ch.23: Atemu's Day (pt2) School

Atemu walked through the park and entered the busy streets of the city. He looked around and continued his way to either Yugi's school or the university. He made it to time square and saw the clock, which read 10:15.

`Yugi might be having lunch pretty soon.' He thought as he walked over to where the school is.

~Domino High: History class~
Yugi sat in his desk, crazily taking down every bit of information he could from his teacher to his paper. It's not that he's an `A' student, but today's subject was about Ancient Egypt and he didn't want to pass the opportunity just listening.

Then the bell for lunch rang out, which caused huge crowds in hallways to the cafeteria. Yugi went outside and met up with the other three.

“Hey guys!” He called as he waved his hand, and then ran towards the group.

They sat under a fully-grown cherry tree, with a good amount of cherry blossoms still on, making it the best lunch spot in the school.

“Hey Yugi.” The trio said in unison.

“Where's Jou?” Yugi asked. “He's supposed to eat with us today.”

“Lunch detention.” Malik said as he bit into his sandwich.

“Again.” Yugi said as he let out a sigh. “Oh well, I guess we'll eat without him.” He sat down and about to reach into his backpack when Ryou spoke up.

“You were about to say something Kia?” He asked.

“Uh, yeah, umm…” Kia said, looking a bit nervous. “You know the talent show?”

“Yes, people who perform either alone or with a group. Why?” Ryou said.

“Well… I sorta… signed us up.” Kia said as Maik sprayed the soda that he had in his mouth.

“You… did… WHAT!!” Malik shouted, making Kia backup. “What were you thinking!”

“I'm sorry, I didn't know what came over me.” She said.

Malik stared at her in anger, but Ryou placed a hand on his shoulder and looked over to her, also shocked about the news.

“May I ask why you signed us up?” Ryou said calmly.

“Well…” Kia started to explain. “I heard this great song from the class radio during English, and the sign up sheet was right there, and… the next thing I knew, I walked away from the list with all our names on it.”

Malik let out an annoyed sigh and leaned back with his hands supporting him. “What are we going to do?” He said, regretting the question.

Kia smiled. “Well…”

~Back to Atemu at the back gate of the school~
Atemu had finally made it to the school grounds, but was having a bit of a problem trying to locate Yugi without being seen by the other students. He kept dodging into the shadows every time someone was coming.

`And I thought my palace was hard to get.' He thought as he continued his search outside.

“Oh alright, I'll do it, but I'm telling you I'm awful for the part.”

`Aibou?' He thought as he heard Yugi's voice from behind the tree. He went towards the tree and noticed Yugi's bag, wide opened, which made putting Yugi's lunch box in easy. `That was simple enough.' He thought, as he was about to leave, when Malik said something.

“Well, are you gonna sing or not.” He said impatiently.

“Why do I have to sing?” Yugi asked. “Kia seems perfect for the part.”

“Yeah, but she's also doing the keyboard and the other technical stuff.” Malik pointed out. “Not only that, but you're the only one who doesn't have an instrument to play in this stupid band.”

“But I thought you liked the idea of banging the drums.” Ryou said teasingly.

Malik looked at him. “That's an acceptance, at least it's better than playing the guitar.” He said as Ryou shrugged and looked at Yugi.

“Come on Yugi, I bet you're not as bad as you think.” Ryou said encouragely.

Yugi looked down at his feet. “I don't know what to song to sing.” He looked ashamed.

Atemu saw this from the corner of his eye, hiding behind the tree with its shadow covering him. He didn't like to see the small teen uncomfortable and was about to step out of his hiding, when one of the trio spoke up.

“What about that song we heard at the mall, before it started to rain, remember.” Kia said.

Yugi looked at her as if she was from another planet. “Why?” He asked.

“It's something.” Kia said.

Yugi sighed. “Okay. I'm ready.” He said.

“THEN DO IT!” Malik and Kia said.

Yugi closed his eyes and pictured Atemu in his mind, then he took a deep breath.

“When the sea falls from the shore
As the light sinks low, will I see you any more?
As the rain falls from the sky
Can I bring you back, from a distant lullaby?

Show me your vision, the story begun
Two lights are rising and burning as one.”

The trio listened, almost in a trance from his singing.

“In the deep blue of the night
Shine the millions of stars and my spirit burning bright,
Spinning on, into the sun, flying higher
Now my journey's begun…”

The wind picked up, causing the cherry blossoms to fall around like snowflakes.

“And the…
Cold, cold wind, it blows me away
The feeling all over is a black black day
But I know that I'll see you again
And I know that you're near me.”

Atemu felt his heart skip a beat when he saw Yugi, standing in the light from the sun and the cherry blossoms falling gracefully around him.

“There's a star, calling my name
Its echo is true and the song is not the same
Take my hand and lead me away
Bring me back to you in your arms I'm going to stay…

Tell me your vision, the story begun
Two lights are rising and burning as one.”

Some of the nearby students stopped what they were doing and listened to Yugi.

“All those years drifting in space
I have known you well, yet I've never seen your face
You turn around, looking at me, laughter in your eyes
And now I can see

And the cold, cold wind, it blows me away
The feeling all over is a black black day
But I know that I'll see you again
And I know that you're near me.”

Yugi opened his eyes and looked at everyone and heard an applause from behind him.

“That proves it.” Kia said. “You're our lead singer.”

Yugi looked dumbstruck.

“Yeah, and you're even better than Kia.” Malik said smiling.

“Hey!” Kia protested, making Malik laugh. “But seriously Yugi, when you were singing, it had a lot of feeling to it, as if you mean every word of it.”

“When's rehearsal?” Ryou said, dropping the `Yugi' subject.

“In two days.” Kia responded.

“Tell me you're kidding.” Malik said as Kia shook her head. He sighed at this, then the bell rang.

“We'll meet here tomorrow then?” Kia asked.

“Like we do everyday.” Malik said.

“I'll pick a few songs and let you guys choose which one we could do.” She said, which made everyone look at her.

“You're getting into this, aren't you.” Malik said in a minor annoyed tone.

“Come on guys, or we'll be late for class!” Ryou said as he started to run.

Everyone headed towards the school, leaving their spot deserted for the day.

Atemu walked out of the shadows and climbed over the gate, then he walked down towards the museum, humming the song Yugi was singing.

`I didn't know he has such an angelistic voice.' He was a bit confused at that thought, but he didn't mind, since it was true and continued his way.

I do not own the song! Hayley Westenra in the CD, “Pure”, rightly owns “Across the Universe of Time”. R&R please.
