Yami stared at the child in front of him, shocked that the group of thieves would send a child to do their job. The child's hands were covered in blood, amethyst eyes cold and cruel. The child looked almost exactly like him, another thing that caught his eyes. "Go ahead, Pharaoh," the child spat, eyes narrowing. "Kill me and save yourself from death."

"They send a child to do a man's job?" he asked. A growl escaped the boy's throat.

"I'm not a CHILD, I'm eighteen years old and I've been killing since I was eight. Does that clear everything up for you, your majesty." Sarcasm dripped from every word, sharp as the dagger the teenager held in his bloody hands. Distrust was lurking in the boy's eyes, everything he'd ever been told by the clan about the Pharaoh sinking into his mind. Why would the ruler of Egypt converse with him, an assassin who had originally come to kill him? Originally. Yumah found himself drowning within those crimson eyes, drowning within a sea of lust and love.

It seemed he would forever be drowned within those depths......

'He betrayed you, you fool, so why are you hesitating?' a small part of Yumah's mind hissed. Oddly how, even in his reincarnation's body, Yumah felt attracted to the former Pharaoh somehow. Lying there in the bed like that, the other ancient looked slightly cute. Yumah shook his head wildly, snarling to himself. No, he wouldn't allow his damn hormones to take control of him again, wouldn't allow Yugiou to manipulate his reincarnation as well. A cruel smile curled on his lips, the dagger disappearing from his hand. 'No. I'll continue to control this one's body, make Yugiou think his little hikari has betrayed him. But of course once my conscious takes over, nothing will be left of his hikari. Nothing.'

Yami shifted on the bed, crimson orbs slowly opening when he heard rustling and felt the warm spot next to him, devoid of any life. Slowly he sat up, smiling almost when he saw it was only his aibou. He frowned, sensing something different about the small teen. "Where are you going, hikari? It's 4 in the morning. You need your rest."

"I'm going out," Yumah spoke in a perfect imitation of his body's voice, pulling on a silk shirt. "Don't worry, Yami, I'm just going for a walk and I'll be back as soon as I can." Soon after dressing, he left the room. Yami stared after him. There was something wrong with his small koi, that was plain to see. Looking into Yuugi's eyes, the ancient Pharaoh felt as if he were looking into the past. But Yuugi had no connection to ancient Egypt other than himself.

Right?

-- later that morning --

Yami yawned as he walked into the large den of the Kaiba mansion, stretching languidly. He hadn't been able to get any sleep since Yuugi had suddenly decided to go out, worried about his aibou. What's more was that Yuugi had left the puzzle in the room, so their connection wasn't as sharp as it normally would be. He felt a darkness radiating from his hikari's soul, one that was sort of familiar...... Yami shrugged mentally as he sat down next to the other two spirits, crossing his arms over his chest in a regal manner as he thought about it. There was just something bugging him in the back of his mind and heart, something to do with the memories not yet touched in his soul room.

"Ah!" He glared at Ishtar, who had poked him in the ribs. He was about to make a retort when Ishtar told him to be quiet and pointed towards the TV screen. Yami blinked at him, noticing the two former tomb raiders(1) were watching it intently, a look on Bakura's features he couldn't quite recognize. Looking at the screen, a shocked look entered his eyes. The screen was showing blood, massive amounts of it covering dead bodies of street thugs. It was still fresh, a sign that the kill could have been made only four or five hours ago. The screen showed writing on the ground in the blood of the victims. One word, seven letters.

'Pharaoh'

Yami felt shivers go up his spine, knowing there were too many people out there who hated him for whatever reasons and too many vengeful spirits to be sure of who it was. He glanced across the large couch at the other two darks, mentally noticing Bakura's grave look, hands held in almost a prayer and placed near his forehead. Worry was etched across the albino's features, almost a parental sort of worry and a look in Ishtar's violet-lavender eyes he couldn't identify. Liquid brown met his own crimson and the tomb robber voiced their concern.

"There's only one who kills like that......and he's been dead for centuries," Bakura whispered as the others began to come down for breakfast. He looked at his blonde lover. "It's Yumah, I'd know that style of killing anywhere."

Ishtar nodded in agreement, placing his hands in his lap. "Yes, he always did have a unique way of spilling blood. Yumah......he was killed before he could complete a mission, wasn't he?" He let his eyes wander to the Pharaoh that was sitting next to them and Yami felt his blood run cold the way the blonde looked at him. "His last and only incomplete mission was to kill you, Yami. Somewhere along the way he got sidetracked by something, we never got the chance to find out what from my memory but........."

-- Ishtar's flashback, three millennia ago --

********************

Ishtar hid his face by the cloak he wore, moving amongst the crowd to try and get to the front of the circle. It had been over a six months since Yumah had been given the order to kill Yugiou but once the clan had gotten wind of a public execution they immediately made plans to travel to Memphis where the Pharaoh's palace was. Bakura-sama was in another part of the crowd, watching as the youngest thief/assassin in the clan was brought out, being held by Yugiou's guards, the Black Magician and the Elfin Swordsman. There was murmuring in the crowd, some shocked cries that such a child was rumored to have been both the Pharaoh's lover and his former killer.

Yumah's eyes glared fiercely and the crowd moved back a little as the elfin warrior began to tie a rope around his neck. The assassin spat at the ground and kicked at the guard viciously, earning him a punch in the gut which caused him to double over slightly. Yet no tears fell from the eighteen-year-olds eyes that narrowed when he watched Yugiou stroll out, dressed regally. Their eyes met, amethyst bloodstones locked on crimson, the same colour as the blood he was meant to spill. Yugiou seemed unshaken, that is until he was standing in front of his look-alike, the one that glared at him with so much malice, pain, hurt, hatred, sadness and...... Ishtar blinked at the emotion that crossed Yumah's features.

......Love?

"Do you have any last words, Yumah, killer of a thousand and more innocents and rapier of so many men and women alike, before you are judged by Anubis and sent to Set for your misdeeds?" He could hear that Yugiou's voice was cracking slightly, trying hard to maintain the voice of confidence and arrogance that the commoners and slaves feared.

The punch from the Elfin Swordsman had brought blood into his mouth and Yumah spat it, the liquid landing on the puzzle the Pharaoh wore, smirking when he saw it disappear into the eye of Ra. "When I first got a good look at you, Pharaoh, I thought you were beautiful but of course you were just another one of my assignments, just another fool to drag into the game of love. I found I was beginning to loose myself under your gaze and these past few months have taught me all I need to know. I lost my touch, my shield and I handed you my sword in more ways than one." A cold smile found its way past the smirk on his lips. "Pharaoh, we will meet another time in another life and I shall complete my mission, no matter how many lives I have to take in order to do so. I'll entice you, make you love me once more and then I'll lure you in for the kill like a fish on a hook." Yumah cackled, an insane look coming into his bloodstones. "You'll be dead, Yugiou, and I'll rape your cold, lifeless body," he hissed finally, pleased that the crowd of commoners and slaves had received every word of it. "I'll make sure to keep it around when I need a release."

Yugiou stepped back at the end of the assassin's speech and nodded to the blonde elf. Yumah's body hung moments later, cold dead eyes staring up into the sun and lips open slightly. The game king felt his chest twist in pain but brushed it away and left the city central, followed by his most trusted monsters. The slaves were ordered to take away the body and to the garden at the back of the palace where it would be buried under the patch of black roses without a sarcophagus and without being mummified.

Ishtar silently approached the bandit king, knowing even with the albino's back turned that Bakura was silently crying. The blonde said nothing and only wrapped his arms around Bakura's waist, nuzzling his neck comfortingly. There was nothing to be said about the one they had thought of as a son, the one they had both raised as one of their own.

Nothing at all.........

Yumah chuckled softly as he licked the blood away from his hands, cleaning them delicately like a cat. His bloodstones wandered around the club he was in, looking for someone relatively easy to kill off and someone with a close connection to the Pharaoh. His eyes fell instantly on a brunette girl who was sitting alone and a cold smile curled as he began moving through the crowd towards her. Yes it was her, the reincarnation of Yugiou's wife. He licked his lips harshly, an idea forming in his mind. Yes......she would do nicely............

Anzu sighed, running her finger gently along the wineglass and bringing it to her lips, letting the burning liquid run down her throat. It was a lonely night/morning, all her friends had gone home hours before and she was alone in the club, it amazed her that none of the guys around her had asked her to dance yet. 'Maybe I'm losing my touch,' she thought bitterly, placing the glass down on the table. A shiver went down her spine as she felt a hand trail down the back of her neck and she swallowed as lips brushed against her ear sensually.

"Mmm, fancy seeing you in a place like this, Mazaki," a all-too-familiar voice purred and she turned around in her chair, nearly hitting the person behind her. "Yuugi" smirked darkly, running a tongue across his lips as his hands moved to his hips. Anzu shivered slightly under the cool gaze, feeling as though he was unwrapping her mentally. "Mind if I sit down?"

"Y-Yuugi, what are you doing here? I......I would have thought you'd be with Yami at these hours." Yumah narrowed his amethyst orbs, moving to lean against the table with both hands. It was so easy that he already had her on the hook......all he had to do was reel her in.

He shook his head as she moved over, letting him sit down. "Yami and I broke up," he purred, leaning his chin on his hand and eyeing her appreciatively. "I would have thought that to have reached your ears by now, Mazaki."

Anzu blinked at him, clueless. "You......you're not mad at me for being a homophobe?" she whispered, remembering that all the boys had been mad when she announced her departure from the group. Yuugi looked like he was dressed to kill, in more ways than one. Blue eyes looked him over, then pointed out, "You have blood on your lip."

She watched as his tongue poked out slightly, removing the copper liquid from it. There was something different about Yuugi, something that separated the teen before her from the child she used to know. His movement seemed precise, almost like a hunter.

She never knew, and would never know, how right she was.

He moved forward, straddling her beneath his own body and leaning in, hands moving around her hips and running teasingly up her thighs. Anzu gasped, chest already heaving as he gave her a cold look, lips moving to connect with her neck, tongue roughly moving against it. Yumah smirked darkly when she began to respond, leaning upwards to whisper in her ear and moving off her, giving her a look that ordered her to follow him and walking away, running a hand through his hair as he heard her heeled boots clicking against the tiled floor behind him. She was desperate enough, that was certain..

Desperate enough to sleep with an ancient, silent panther.
