First Meeting
Malik skipped along the tunnels of Pharaoh Yami's tomb. The dark passages were lit by torches. The child hummed happily as it skipped into the room of golden treasures that had belonged to the pharaoh.
He used to play with the golden bowls, the tiny statues, and the weaponry which littered the room. Malik wanted to play again.
Skipping through the dimly lit hallways was hard work.
The ten year old boy ran into the room and placed the toy horses and soldiers in a row.
"If I'm going to be the pharaoh and command my army, I'll need a scepter."
Malik looked up and saw a scepter on a table. "There's something I can use!"
Malik took the Millennium Rod in his hand and it started to glow brightly.
"Wow! I wonder why that happened."
"BOY!"
Malik jumped back, seeing his father in the doorway, seething angrily.
"That is not a toy, child! You know better than to use the Pharaoh's belongings as your own personal toys!"
"But, I have no toys to play with, sir!"
Malik's father growled. "What do you call sand?!"
"I've played with sand for ten years! It's boring!"
Malik's father ripped the Millennium Rod from his hand and grabbed the boy's wrist angrily. "It's time, son!"
"Time for what?"
"It's time for you to become a tomb-keeper and put away this childish nonsense!"
****************************
Inside the Millennium Rod………..
The spirit in the Millennium Rod threw another date into his mouth and chewed as he laid on his bed.
He couldn't tell how long he had been sealed in this Millennium Item.
A warm breeze blew through the room and he felt a burst of energy.
"What could this be?"
Marik stood up and walked to his soulroom door. He opened it and found another door had formed across the hall from his own.
"I have a new hikari! Well….Well…Well…It's about Ra-damned time! I wonder who it is this time."
Marik walked to the door and peered inside. He saw a single bed and toys. "What the hell is this crap? Where did this shit come from?"
He looked at the wall and saw a picture of his new hikari….an Egyptian child ten years of age.
"A kid?! What the fuck do I look like? A baby sitter?"
Marik kicked the wall. "I used to be part of the nobility back in Egypt! My family had power! Influence! Now I'm…I'm…RA DAMN IT!"
Marik returned to his soulroom and stood at the foot of the sand pit in his soulroom. The sandpit was a constant reminder of where his mortal remains were dumped by Pharaoh Yami.
That pharaoh had sealed him in the Millennium Rod.
The Pharaoh, or his descendants, would pay dearly for letting him suffer loneliness.
But his loneliness was nothing compared to the loss of his lover and friend….Bakura Osiris Itemri.
"I have to find Bakura….."
****************************
"Let's go, boy! It's time for your initiation!" The man grumbled as he pulled his ten year old son into what he called the "initiation chamber."
"ODION! HELP! I don't want to be a tomb-keeper!" the child shrieked in fear. "I don't want this!"
Malik's father roared angrily. "NONSENSE, MALIK ISHTAR! I got the initiation just as my father had before me! Now it's time for you to bear the mark of the pharaoh, my son!"
Odion watched helplessly as the child was dragged into the "initiation chamber." He shook his head sadly. 'Poor Master Malik.'
"ODION! FOR THE LOVE OF RA! HELP ME, PLEASE!"
Odion heard the child's scream of fear and failed to block out his own fear for his little master. "Malik shall not suffer alone."
Odion disappeared, knowing what he had to do.
*************************
Malik's POV
My father picked me up and placed me face-down on a stone altar. Despite my thrashing and screaming, my father managed somehow to tie my legs and arms to the stone table.
Why do I have to do this?
I don't want to be a tomb-keeper!
I want to go up to the real world! I want to live up there with the blue sky and the birds! I want to see the people and live how they live!
No more of this moldy old tomb!
No more guarding the tomb of a crusty old pharaoh!
My father stood in front of me and showed me a dagger inscribed with the symbol of the pharaoh.
"This shall change your life forever, son."
My father stood by the stone altar. "Great God Ra! Accept this sacrifice of blood! My son, Malik Ramses Ishtar, shall protect Pharaoh Yami's tomb with his dying breath!"
"Let me go, father!" Malik cried, struggling against his bonds. "Please! I'm your son!" the child cried.
The father lifted the dagger and pierced the skin on his child's back. Malik let out a shrill cry of pain. The tears streamed down his little face as his face turned red from his screams.
The father continued to carve into his son's back, ignoring the pitiful pleas of his son to stop.
The dagger stung as it cut his flesh, sending searing pain through his body.
'All this pain for a crusty old pharaoh!' he thought to himself, trying to distract himself from the pain.
//Someone is hurting you, isn't he, my pet?//
Malik looked around, hearing someone's voice ask him a question.
"I hereby initiate my son, Malik Ramses Ishtar, into the tomb-keepers! May the shedding of his blood mix with the blood of those whom have come before him. May he remain loyal to his family and to the protection of Pharaoh Yami's tomb!"
//The Pharaoh??? Pharaoh Yami?!//
/Who is here with me?/
//I am here. I am your Dark.//
/My Dark? Who?/
The dagger continued to slice into him, making any coherent thought impossible.
//I can feel your anger….your pain…..it is exquisite.//
The child screamed, his face red from lack of air.
//You want this to stop, my little one?//
/Gods, Ra, make him stop! Pain!/
//Don't worry, my little one. I will make the pain stop as I feed off of your fear and rage.//
Normal POV
Malik opened his eyes and saw a tall figure standing behind his father.
The figure growled. "You dare put your hand on what is mine, mortal?!"
Malik's father screamed loudly and dropped the dagger. His father fell onto his side, blood seeping from an open wound. The figure beside him had the Millennium Rod that his father had taken from him.
The figure drove the Millenium Rod's dagger into his father's gasping body again….and again….and again….
The figure laughed as his eye twitched in uncontrollable rage.
The man didn't stop until his father had laid dead in a pool of his own blood.
The man stood in front of Malik and sheathed the hidden dagger of the Millennium Rod. The child and the man met gazes. The boy continued to shake from the pain of the ceremony.
"What is your name?"
The child stuttered nervously. "M-M-Malik…..Ish---tar."
The man narrowed his eyes. "You are an Ishtar, too?"
The child nodded, his sight starting to go blurry. "Yes…"
"I am an Ishtar, too. My name is Marik Ishtar."
The room started to spin from his blood loss.
"Marik…..help."
The child lost consciousness.
************************
Isis Ishtar waited in her brother's room for him to return from his "initiation." She folded her hands on her lap nervously.
She had heard that the initiation was painful, involving piercing of the skin and deep wounds.
"May Ra help my brother through this," she prayed.
"My mistress," Odion bowed as he entered the room. "Master Malik has not returned?"
Isis shook her head. "No. I'm very worried. He should be back by now."
Odion looked down at her. "I must see that my master is safe. I cannot wait any longer."
Odion and Isis ran into the initiation chamber and gasped, finding Malik's father on the floor, surrounded by a pool of his own blood.
Malik was tied down to the altar, his blood dripping off of the stone altar.
Odion ran to Malik and untied the boy. "Master Malik!" Tears came to Odion's eyes seeing the child bleeding and his skin scarred.
Isis ran to get bandages for Malik's back. She returned and helped Odion bandage Malik.
When they were done, Odion carried the child back to his room and laid him on his stomach.
Isis picked up the Millennium Item and a vision flashed before her eyes. Malik was older and kissing another who looked just like him.
'Who is this?' she asked herself.
[I love you, Marik Ishtar.] her brother said to the twin stranger.
[[I love you more with each breath I take, Malik Ishtar.]]
Isis' father had given her the Millennium Necklace for her thirteenth birthday. Her father had fastened it around her neck himself.
She looked at the golden Item in her hand. "My brother is meant to have this Item. I don't know how or why, but this is my brother's Millennium Item."
Isis carried the Millennium Item to its unconscious, wounded owner.
****************************
Ten year old Ryou covered his eyes, bouncing up and down excitedly.
His father had his last present all wrapped and ready. It was a present from a dig in Egypt. Every year he brought Ryou home an artifact.
Steven put his present in front of his son. "Open your eyes, Ryou."
Ryou opened his eyes to see a gift in front of him. It was wrapped in bright wrapping paper. Steven did not put any bows on any of this presents, feeling that it would make Ryou's presents look "too feminine."
"This is your last gift."
Ryou opened his eyes wide at the present. "Wow! I must have been good this year!"
Steven nodded. "Aunt Helen said you were good, so I brought you something extra special."
Ryou smiled. "Extra special? What is it, daddy?"
Steven handed Ryou a box wrapped in balloon-covered paper. "Happy Birthday, son."
Ryou opened the box, bouncing happily. "I can't wait to see what it is!" Ryou opened it up and found a necklace with a pyramid in the center. Five spikes dangled from the gold.
"WOW! AWESOME!"
He picked it up and examined it closer.
"I bought it from a merchant who said it had something to do with Duel Monsters. I know you play that silly game."
"It's not silly, daddy! I really like it! And I'm good at it!"
Steven rolled his eyes. "Well, at least it's not like you're playing with dolls or anything like that."
One thing Steven had always had been afraid of was Ryou growing up "feminine."
"How does it fit?"
Ryou put the necklace on. "It fits well!"
"The merchant who sold it to me called it the 'Millennium Ring.'"
The Millennium Ring began to sparkle.
***************************
Inside the Millennium Ring……….
The spirit inside the Millennium Ring laid on his bed, digging dirt from underneath his nails. He had used the wall of his soulroom to sharpen his dagger. His soulroom was a recreation of the cell in which he was tortured, raped, then murdered by Pharaoh Yami's stepbrother and Captain of the Guard.
He felt a strange energy seep in from the door of his soulroom. Suddenly, a new door appeared on the wall. The door at the foot of his bed lead to the Shadow Realm.
"What the hell is this?" he asked as he stood up, dagger gripped in his hand.
His spiky white hair twitched as he turned the knob on the new door. He opened it and saw a room with a comfortable bed, unlike the cot on which he slept now. The room had a bookcase covered with books.
"What in the name of Osiris is going on?"
Bakura returned back into his soulroom. "I have a new hikari! Interesting. I wonder if this person will be as much fun as the others had been."
Bakura walked to the barred window of his soulroom. "I hope I can find Ishtar this time."
*******************************
Ryou put his presents upstairs. He looked at himself in the mirror with the Ring around his neck.
"My daddy gets me the neatest presents!"
Ryou gripped the Ring with both hands and it began to glow.
Beside him stood a man who looked like his twin. But this man had white, spiky hair!
Ryou jumped back and gasped, backing away from the figure. "Who…who are you?"
The other looked down at him and raised an eyebrow. "I am Bakura."
Ryou let out a smile. "Really? That's my last name! That's quite a coincidence, hey?"
Bakura reached out and grabbed the ten year old boy by the shoulder. The boy froze in fear. "Where is Marik Ishtar?"
"Who?"
"Ishtar! Take me to him!"
Ryou shivered. "I don't know where he is…B-B-Bakura."
Bakura narrowed his eyes, his hair going spiky. "Listen to me…hikari….I'm going to lay down the law! I don't know who you are, nor do I like you, understood? You don't do anything without my permission! You don't even take a breath without asking me, understand?"
Ryou nodded silently, unable to speak.
"I asked you a question, you worthless little creature! You don't do anything without my permission! Understand?"
Ryou nodded. "Yes…..sir."
"Good. Now that we understand each other, you disobey me and you will be severely….punished."
"Yes…sir."
Bakura threw the child against the wall and disappeared. Ryou stood against the wall, clinging to it.
"Was…Was that a dream?"
The ten year old slid down the wall and drew his knees to his chin.
//No, my little creature…..that was not a dream…..I am not a dream. I am your worst nightmare.//
