“So, Malik, how long does it take for this thing to actually throw us into the past?” Yugi asked, as the machine drifted along a time chamber peacefully. It'd been about ten minutes since they left Sami back in their time, and even Ryou was sure it shouldn't take this long. Malik looked out the small window on the door, and shrugged.

“It could take a while, since we're traveling so far back in time,” Malik replied calmly, “The only reason it took us a second before was because we didn't need to make such a huge time leap. But there's a huge difference between 5 minutes and 5 millennia.” Ryou crossed his arms and leaned back against the wall.

“Let's hope it doesn't take much longer,” he said quietly, “I don't want to spend all day wandering around in a time zone I don't belong in.” Bakura nodded.

“I don't blame you. I've seen some of those sci-fi movies. People sometimes disappear into times they don't belong in, and they can never get home,” Bakura added. That did everything but lighten the mood. Yugi shivered, Malik's skin paled, causing him a look of great worry, and Ryou sighed, slapping Bakura on the back of the head. The last thing they needed was for Bakura to scare them all.

“Sami's right, you watch too much television,” Ryou stated, and reassured Yugi and Malik, “Guys, don't worry. Sami said Chesiers time travel a lot, and they never vanished before. I'm sure we'll be fine too.” Yugi smiled, and Malik gave the thumbs-up, but Bakura once again shot the peace down.

“But Sami's energy is much more stable than ours. She can use magic to get herself out. All we have are our items,” Bakura reminded them, holding up the Millennium Ring, “And they'll do squat in the past.” Yugi looked down again, and Ryou nudged Bakura hard in the ribs, causing the spirit to fall over in pain.

“Bakura, stop it. You're not making this any better,” Ryou said sternly, “Seriously, Sami knows more about time travel than I do. If she says we'll be fine, chances are, we'll be fine.” Nothing more was said after that, as the machine continued to drift through the large space chamber. Finally, the machine sped up, and everyone inside felt as though they were in a roller coaster. Ryou tried to scream, but the sheer velocity at which they were traveling cancelled all noise out until finally, they crashed hard onto the ground. The door opened up and the four were all thrown onto the ground outside. Malik was the first to recover.

“Is… is everyone okay?” he asked, stretching his neck out. Bakura slowly pulled himself up, and helped Yugi as Ryou stood up and looked around. Wherever they were, it was very cold outside, and very gray. The sun wasn't shining, it was cloudy out today, and snow was beginning to fall. This couldn't possibly have been Egypt in Bakura's life.

“Malik, I think something's wrong with your machine,” Ryou stated bluntly, “This isn't Egypt, is it?” Malik looked around and was greeted with the same scene Ryou had, and he looked very confused. He rushed over to his machine and looked at the date that was set, but none was displayed. He pressed a few buttons, but judging by the look on his face, he wasn't getting what he wanted.

“I don't understand it! We've got to be in Egypt! Or at least in Bakura's time period!” Malik cried, pressing more buttons, though it didn't do anything, “The only way this could happen is if he didn't set a date when we left. That'd automatically turn on the Random mode I built in.” Ryou and Yugi both looked at Bakura, who grinned guiltily and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. They had their answer before he even had to say anything.

“I… might have forgotten to do that,” Bakura said, trying to laugh, “But at least we know it works!” Ryou twitched, as this was the first thing he wanted to avoid. But rather than just try and beat Bakura up, he turned to Malik sharply.

“Can you fix it?” he asked quickly. Malik told him to be patient, and began typing in commands. But every single one of them was rejected. Malik gave a heavy sigh and slumped onto a rock.

“It's no use. We burnt out the engine because of the random mode,” Malik said sadly, “We'll have to find a power supply somewhere.” Ryou clenched his fists angrily, and Yugi looked absolutely freaked out at that point.

“But we're in ancient times! They didn't HAVE electricity back then!” Yugi cried, “Oh, we've gotta find Yami in the past! He can help us! He always helps us!” Ryou raised an eyebrow as Yugi scrambled to his feet and began calling Yami's name as loudly as he could. Unfortunately, if Yugi was expecting an Egyptian pharaoh to come waltzing by, it just never happened.

“I doubt he'd be able to do anything,” Bakura said, when Yugi gave up from a sore throat, “He wouldn't even recognize us. Maybe we should look for Sami… ah, Sith, perhaps. She said that was her name, right?” Ryou nodded, and looked around for any sign of Sami, either in his time or this one. But there was nothing. The street they were on was completely deserted.

“I… think she did. At least, she believes that was her name, before she was adopted,” Ryou replied quietly, “But I doubt she's here, either. I doubt we're even in your time zone, Bakura. Just look.” Ryou pointed to a sign in the middle of town. It was an oak sign, and a directory of the city they were in was carved into it, as was the year. It was 1506 where they were, which explained the lack of anything ancient.

“1506? But why'd we end up here?” Yugi asked, “And what can help us here?” Ryou looked at the sign more closely. They weren't that far into the past, so there had to be some source of power.

“The layout looks exactly like Domino City's shopping district,” Ryou said, as he pointed out the various similarities, “The clock tower's in the same place, too. Is it possible we're in Domino 500 years into the past?” Bakura looked at the top of the sign where the name of the city was displayed. It didn't say Domino on it. Instead, it said “Rabanastre.”

“What kind of name is that!?” Bakura asked, arching an eyebrow, “I'm glad they changed it if this is Domino City in the past!” Ryou rolled his eyes and sighed. Right then, he had no time to argue about names.

“Who cares what the name is? Right now we need to find something to fix the engine,” Ryou stated, and pointed to the map, “Look, the museum is still here, too. We should look there, maybe they found something to help us.” Malik snorted.

“What could they possibly find here?” he asked, “This town's barely alive, Ryou. In fact, it looks pretty deserted to me. None of the houses are lit, either.” Malik had a point. Even though it was broad daylight, absolutely no one was outside. The houses seemed empty, the streets were empty, everything felt empty. But Ryou couldn't let that stop them.

“We have to try,” he said, “If someone wants to stay and keep an eye on the machine, then stay. But I'm going.” Yugi smiled, and raised his hand.

“I'm in, too! Who knows, maybe we'll see my great-grandparents or something!” Yugi exclaimed, and stood next to Ryou. Malik looked at Bakura, who stood near the time machine.

“What? I'm staying. I have no particular interest here, so I might as well keep an eye on your contraption, Malik,” Bakura stated, and sat down. Malik sighed, but agreed to help Ryou anyway. Now with that settled, Ryou just had to figure out where to go from there. According to the map, they were about two blocks away from the park's entrance, which was right across from the museum.

“We'll go this way,” Ryou said, and headed towards the west, Yugi and Malik close behind him. The scenery didn't improve as they made their way across town. In fact, it looked bleaker. Ryou was sure they were in a rather poor section of town as they passed some rather run-down looking apartments and a shady-looking bar. But nothing else seemed out of the ordinary. They passed a large park with a bell tower, and all of them knew they were in what was Domino Square in the past. And right across the street was the museum. Same shape in the future, the only difference was that the name displayed wasn't “Rabanastre.”

“Should we go in?” Yugi whispered, obviously not wanting to attract any attention, except that there was no one else around. Ryou looked at the doors, and nodded.

“Might as well. If we're going to find out anything, here would be the best bet,” Ryou replied, and put his hand on the brass handle. Unlike the handles in his time, these felt fresh, and he was sure that if they'd gone back any longer in time, the museum wouldn't even have been built yet. Quietly, he pushed the door opened to reveal a dark, empty display room. Well, empty only in the fact that no one was inside. Tools littered the few shelves that were built, and in the middle was a glass display case with a sword in it. Ryou didn't recognize it from the museum in his time, though, and went to take a look.

“Did you find anything to help us?” Malik asked when he noticed Ryou walking towards the case. Ryou shook his head and looked at the case. It was too dark to see any really good details, but there was enough light to read the small plaque. Ryou read it, and Yugi looked at it from behind him. On the top, it said “Sword of the Dark Paladin.” Malik looked at it as Ryou backed away and arched an eyebrow.

“Sword of the dark paladin?” he repeated quizzically, “Sounds pretty exaggerated if you ask me.” Yugi squinted his eyes to see the sword, but it was still too dark.

“Well, maybe if we could see it, it wouldn't seem so made up,” Yugi suggested, and flipped the light switch on. The entire room lit up instantly, but that wasn't what shocked Ryou as he jumped back. What shocked him was the now visible sword. And it looked all too familiar to the shattered one Sami kept in her room. Even Yugi recognized it. He'd only been in Sami's room once, but that was enough.

“Ryou, isn't that Sami's sword?” Yugi asked, “What's it doing in here?”

“I'm not sure… But that's hers,” Ryou agreed, and then added, “Though the inscription is a bit faded.” Ryou peered closer to read the writing on the sword, and jumped back again. Malik looked back at him as he smacked into the wall behind him.

“Ryou, what's wrong!?” Malik asked, alarmed, “What happened!?” Ryou shook his head and caught his breath before answering. He sounded very worried when he did answer, too. He pointed to the sword.

“The name on that sword is Sith,” Ryou said grimly, “And the rest of the inscription is what she used that sword for.” Yugi looked at the inscription on the sword, but it was in a language he couldn't read, most probably the language of the Chesiers.

“What was the sword used for?” Yugi asked, giving up when he couldn't even read the name Sith. Ryou dusted his shirt off and sighed as he walked back to read the inscription to Yugi.

“According to this, the sword was used to slay down all who opposed Sith and her kingdom,” Ryou explained, still reading, “Her kingdom was at constant war with everyone else, and they forged the Deathbringer to silence their attackers.” Yugi covered his mouth with his hands, and Malik seemed even more confused than he was before as he looked at the sword. He couldn't imagine Sami as a killer… at least, a merciless one.

“So, she was a princess of some kind?” he asked, and snorted, “How nice to give her a sword that kills everything it touches.” Ryou shook his head. He couldn't believe that this could've possibly belonged to Sami.

“She wasn't a princess. She doesn't know what she was,” Ryou said sadly, “But… this sword… it makes her seem like a heartless murderer from what the description says.” Malik patted Ryou's back as Yugi looked at the sword again.

“Do we take the sword, then?” Yugi asked, “I mean, we told Sami we'd find something to help her, and this might have an answer or two.” Without even thinking, or consent from Ryou, Yugi tapped on the glass case and took the top off. The sword reacted slightly, and then settled down. But as Yugi went to grab it, an alarm sounded, and the glass case shattered to pieces. One by one, the windows and doors to the small building slammed shut, attempting to lock the would-be thieves in.

“Shit!” Malik screamed, as Yugi held the sword and Ryou dragged him away from the case, “Guys, we'd better move our asses before we're shut in!” Obviously, no one objected as they ran to the nearest open window and hopped down. Ryou pushed Yugi out first, and Malik jumped second. Ryou himself made it out just as their window slammed shut, and the lockdown was complete. Seeing that they made it out relatively safely, Malik and Yugi high-fived. But Ryou wasn't so enthusiastic, because right in front of him was a very strong security guard, garbed completely in iron armor, with a spear pointed right at him. If he thought he was dreaming, Ryou wouldn't be so afraid, but he knew the guard was real.

“Halt, fiend! Who do you think you are, stealing from the Rabanastre museum!?” the guard growled under his helmet, “Do you not have manners!? That sword you have is a relic that we can't afford to lose!” Yugi looked at the sword in his hand, which was glowing an irritated red. Like Sami, it too seemed to have a wide array of emotion to it, and it liked to express annoyance the most. Malik held a chuckle in, and Ryou stepped forward bravely.

“I'm sorry, sir,” Ryou began, hoping his best behavior would be enough, “But this sword… I think it might just belong to a friend of mine.” The guard, either amused or suspicious, arched an eyebrow as he scanned the boys. Then he looked at the sword in Yugi's hands.

“I find that difficult to believe, child,” the guard said calmly, “That sword has been in the museum for the past 5 years, no one has yet to claim it. And even if they did so, we found that sword in the desert sands far to the east in the middle of nowhere. How do I know you're telling the truth?” Ryou blinked, knowing he'd gotten himself into even more of a mess. The only way they could be sure was to get Sami, and with the machine broken, that'd be nearly impossible. And they couldn't be sure Sith was in this time, either.

“I… well, she's…” Ryou stuttered, trying to find something to say, “My friend… she's not even in this town. But this sword, it belonged to her family.” The guard shook his head immediately at that, and pointed his spear at Yugi this time.

“Liars! That sword has no owner!” the guard barked, “The bearer of this sword died with no heirs to it. She was the last of her family line, and with no children of her own, the sword could not possibly belong to your friend unless the bearer gave it to someone before her death.” Ryou snapped back to Malik and Yugi, having just dug them into a trap. Yugi looked too scared to try much of anything, but Malik had just one idea, which he voiced loudly.

RUN AWAY!” he screamed, and in total reaction, Yugi and Ryou both joined him as he dashed down an alley towards Domino Lake. The guard, growling angrily at the motion, followed quickly despite his heavy armor. As they ran, Malik slowed down to let Yugi and Ryou speed ahead, and then tripped over any boxes or garbage bins he could find in an attempt to slow the guard down. It worked only for a second as the guard slipped and crushed a bin to bits. Malik took that second to dash away, not daring to look back.

“Hey, guys? Isn't the machine in the opposite direction?” Yugi asked, as they hurdled over a roadblock and down another alley, this one even narrower than before. Ryou skidded to a stop, and Malik slammed into him, caught unaware by the boy's sudden break.

“…you're right! Oh no… we'll never get there with that man after us!” Ryou cried, and Malik scrambled to his feet and looked back. To their horror, the guard was up and bounding towards them, a bit clumsily, but able to close the gap between them quickly. Malik turned back to Ryou for a second.

“Okay, you guys run around the building and reverse back towards where we left Bakura. I'll hold Captain Weighs-a-ton here and catch up a bit later,” Malik said. Ryou went to protest, but was shoved down the alley with Yugi as Malik got into position. Without looking back to make sure Malik was okay, Ryou dragged Yugi out and behind the guard, running as fast as his legs would take him to Bakura. Meanwhile, as the guard came nearer, Malik's grin simply grew. When the guard practically jumped to disable Malik, Malik reared and kicked the guard hard in the stomach, crushing the armor a bit and causing the guard to crash hard onto the ground.

“You… damn you…” the guard mumbled, unable to get up. Malik laughed and went to join his friends, who were far ahead of him. But within little time, the guard was back on his feet and chasing Malik again. And this time, even though he had to abandon his chest armor, he was much faster, putting even more strain on Malik, who pumped his legs as fast as his body would handle. But that wasn't enough as the guard grabbed the back of Malik's shirt and dragged him hard to the floor. Malik tasted dirt and grass as he struggled to free himself, but it was to little avail. The guard simply let him wear himself out.

“Damn, let go of me!” Malik shrieked, kicking and howling to get rid of the guard, but he just didn't leave. He did, however, let go of Malik's collar, and Malik fell completely.

“Let go of thieves? I don't think so, child,” the guard said, and took off his helmet, “I take my job here seriously. That sword, though not rightly ours, was discovered by us nonetheless. I cannot allow crooks like you to run off with it.” Malik stopped trying to make a fuss and settled down. He rolled onto his back and sat up, rubbing the dirt off of his shirt.

“But you don't understand! That sword really does belong to our friend!” Malik exclaimed, though the guard rolled his eyes, “Listen, what if we prove it belongs to her?”

“Can you do so? I would like to see the sword returned, as it's a dangerous artifact, but unless she comes to claim it herself, I have reason for being suspicious,” the guard replied, helping Malik up, “Your adamancy is truly remarkable in that you refuse to give it back. It makes me curious.”

“You're in for a ride then, because we're not exactly from… Rabanastre, was it?” Malik said, and then shook his head, “It's hard to explain, but if you follow me, I promise we'll explain all we can, as hard as it is to believe.” The guard nodded, and hilted his spear.

“I'll do my best to understand,” he said, “Now then, we must march forward. There isn't time to de-activate the alarms in the museum, but we can avoid any other guards, if necessary.” Malik whistled, looked down two roads, and pointed towards one of them, beckoning the guard to follow him.

“It's this way,” he said, and walked down his indicated path.

Meanwhile, Ryou and Yugi were still trying to outrun their would-be chaser as they dashed across a bridge over a small lake. Their plan was to take an alternative route across the large park and hope the guard didn't catch them. Thankfully, Ryou memorized the map and knew just where to go. They rounded a corner and practically jumped over a park bench before speeding down the alley between a small restaurant and a restroom.

“So, do you think Malik's okay?” Yugi panted as they left the alley and Ryou dragged him up a set of stairs towards the entrance of the large park. Ryou nodded reassuringly, but in actuality had very little idea just what happened to Malik.

“Knowing him, he's already with Bakura by now,” Ryou said, and made a sharp left turn back towards where Bakura was. It didn't take long to reach him from there, but what shocked Ryou the most was the fact that not only was Malik there, the guard was too. Or, what Ryou assumed was the guard. He didn't have most of his armor on anymore. He was rather tall, and had long blonde hair with just a bit of stubble on his chin. Ryou expected a rather large, sluggish man, not the beautiful man he saw before him.

“Malik! Are you okay!?” Ryou asked, letting go of Yugi and running over, “How'd he catch you?!” Malik laughed, and pointed to a spot on the ground next to him. Ryou sat down and Malik explained.

“Ryou, it's okay. This guy's going to help us,” Malik replied calmly, “Well, as long as we tell him what's going on.” Ryou nodded slowly, and the guard held out his hand to Ryou. Ryou shook it, and the guard smiled.

“Pleasure, sir,” the guard said, “My name is Basch von Ronsenburg, and I hope your explanation is true.” Ryou sighed as Basch sat down, and Yugi decided to walk over, setting the sword next to the machine, which seemed to be nearly repaired as Bakura typed on the keyboard.

“I'm Ryou Bakura. Anyway, I'll try my best, but our story's a bit unbelievable,” Ryou began, and then explained calmly, “See, my friend… well, wife, actually… is trying to learn her origins. See, she's a Chesier, and…” Basch looked over at Ryou with wide eyes, and Ryou had a feeling Basch knew about Chesiers.

“Your wife is a Chesier!? But…” Basch seemed to be very troubled, “Sir, there hasn't been a Chesier on earth for over 1000 years! Not since the death of Sith K. Winchester of the Nesce kingdom.” Ryou choked a little on what he'd heard, and Malik decided to do some talking for him as he recovered.

“Death? You mean Sith died?” Malik asked. Basch shook his head slowly.

“Well, not die, but she left earth when her kingdom lost a war they waged somewhere in the east,” Basch replied, “Or so that's what the history text states. After that, the gateway between earth and their world… whatever it is, closed and no Chesier was allowed to cross into our world.” Malik looked back at Ryou, who listened intently.

“Sami mentioned something about a war a long time ago that sealed off the gateway. Think this is it?” Malik asked. Ryou looked up into the sky, trying to sort out what he heard. What Basch said vaguely resembled what Sami told him a while back, but that didn't necessarily mean anything.

“I'm not sure yet,” Ryou replied quietly, and turned back to Basch, “What else happened?”

“We're not sure. The text about the Winchester family was burned out a long time ago after the point where Sith lost,” Basch replied, “It was a bloody war, and many didn't survive… in fact, the so-called king who promised to help her ended up nearly double-crossing her until a third party intervened. But what does this have to do with your wife?” Ryou sighed, not daring to tell Basch what Sami had learned so far, and decided to try to cover it all up if he could.

“Well… she said her grandmother's name was Sith,” Ryou lied, “And the inscription on the sword names a Sith, so we thought…” Basch laughed gently.

“Sith isn't an uncommon name in the Nesce kingdom,” Basch stated, “Anyone could be her grandmother. I doubt she's a descendant of Sith K. Winchester.” Malik snorted as he said, “Yeah, you don't know half of it.” Ryou nudged him hard, and he kept his mouth shut.

“Still, she just wanted to know about her family so badly,” Ryou explained… or more, lied, “She was born on earth, and her parents left her when she was little. All she wants is to know what she is.” Malik and Yugi glanced at Ryou, wondering if he was starting to crack. But Basch didn't seem to notice as he sighed heavily.

“I suppose even if it isn't hers, we should give the sword to her,” Basch said, getting off the ground, “After all, that sword is made specifically for Chesiers to handle. I'm sure she'll know what to do with it once she has it. Now, where does she live?” Yugi gasped in fear and Bakura jumped up when Basch came over to him. Ryou was shaking as he stood up. Malik was the only one calm enough to answer.

“See, that's the unbelievable part,” Malik said, “We're not even from this time. The machine Bakura is near? That's how we got here.” Basch blinked, and looked over the machine carefully. Lights dotted it up one side as buttons came down the other. And from the fact that most of them were lit up, it looked like Bakura somehow managed to repair it in their absence. But what was most startling was Basch's reaction to the machine. It wasn't surprise or fear, but excitement.

“A time traveling device… how interesting!” Basch exclaimed, “A friend of mine once tried to create this, but he failed. Does it work well?” Malik smiled and nodded as sweat rolled down Ryou, Yugi, and Bakura's heads as Malik began to explain his machine to Basch, who only listened happily.

“It works like a charm! How did you think we ended up here?” Malik asked after a few moments of chattering, and then pushed Basch into the chamber, “Well, anyway, if we're going to see our friend, we have to get a move on. Bakura, set a date for our time and press the button.” Bakura mumbled as Ryou and Yugi climbed in next. He pressed what he hoped was the correct date, pressed the small button, and climbed into the machine. It rumbled for a minute, and then the door closed tightly shut. Like before, the feeling of being on a roller coaster came back. Except this time, Ryou was better because he'd be going home.

“Sami will be so happy to see this…”
