This is where the perspectives begin to switch. Look for the ~*~ symbol to know when they'll switch.
Yugi watched Seto Kaiba and his new love interest walk away together. "You know, I really think she's going to be good for him."
Tea nodded in agreement. "They seem so perfectly suited for each other, you know? He's really quiet and she's---well, she's not, but they balance each other. Boy, to be a fly on the wall in that room last night!" She giggled at the thought, and Joey shrugged.
"I could have told ya from the first that she'd be good for him," he said confidently. "Kaiba needed a girl that would balance him out, get him out of himself." He got up from his position on the ground and sat next to Tristan on the bench.
"I still don't see why Robin didn't go for me," Tristan said, looking a little downcast. "I mean, everything she said she liked, I had."
"Except for one thing," Joey said, trying to quit smiling.
"What's that?"
"You're not Seto Kaiba." Everyone laughed at Tristan's expression while he shook his head regretfully.
"I---I did see that she changed something about him. He seemed so much more relaxed than the last time we saw him," Yugi said thoughtfully. "Like I said, she's going to be good for him."
"I wonder if she'll change everything about him?" Tea asked. "I mean, KaibaCorp kinda needs the personality that Kaiba's had the whole time we've known him, and you'd hate to see a personal relationship change all that."
"Somehow, I don't think Kaiba will let her change that part of him," Tristan said, with a twist of his lips. "There are some things that even a pretty girl can't change about a guy."
"Like what?" Joey said, a teasing grin flashing across his face. "As I recall, you have to change everything about yourself to even get a pretty girl to look at you."
"Aw, shut up, Joey! I'll kick your ass!" The two started to tussle.
"Knock it off!" Tea cried as a stray punch almost struck her. Yugi rolled his eyes, as if he'd seen it all before.
A familiar voice stopped Tristan and Joey's fight, and caused Yugi and Tea to look up.
"Hey guys!" They all squinted at the short, raven-haired figure running towards them.
"Hey, that's Mokuba!" Yugi cried. "What's up?"
"Not much," Mokuba said as he arrived at the bench and caught his breath. "Have you seen my brother this morning?"
"Yes, as a matter of fact," Tristan said as he straightened up and brushed some dirt away from his shoulders.
"I just saw him," Mokuba said excitedly. "He was walking with a girl!"
"We know," Tea said. "They came by and talked to us. Don't they make a cute couple?" Mokuba looked a little shocked for a second, then realization set in.
"Whoa---so that was what happened last night," he said to himself.
"What was what happened last night?" Joey immediately asked.
"Well---" Mokuba blushed. "I wondered where Seto was last night, so I looked around like I usually do when I can't find him. Usually he's working in his lab, but last night---" He trailed off.
"Go on," Tea gently urged.
"Well, I was walking around and heard talking and laughing coming from one of the guest rooms, and, um----then I heard some other stuff, and I---"
"Oh," Joey said, smiling. "You heard 'em doin' the nasty." Tristan burst out laughing at Joey's blunt comment, and Mokuba turned about fifteen shades of red.
"Um---yeah, I guess---" Mokuba shuffled his feet a little, embarrassed.
"Oh, my God," Tea said, starting to giggle again. "That must have been---interesting." Mokuba rolled his eyes in response.
"Did you get grossed out?" she asked.
"Um---not really, just kind of, um, embarrassed."
"I can imagine," Yugi said, his own cheeks a little pink. "Well, what did you do?"
"Um, well, they kind of---left the door open, and, um, I shut it."
"Oh, so you got a good peep at the action, huh?" Joey said, ribbing Mokuba a little.
"Yeah, I guess." Mokuba looked really embarrassed by this time, and bit his lip.
"Damn, you shoulda took a picture or somethin'!"
"Eww!! Joey!" Tea punched him jokingly on the arm. "Pervert."
"Well, she wouldn't tell us anything about it, so how the hell am I supposed to find out?" Joey was laughing so hard he could barely talk.
"So, you saw them," Tristan said, unable to hide his teasing smile. "Did youstand there for a while or what?"
Mokuba blushed even harder. "When I saw, um, what they were doing, I just shut the door so they'd have some---you know, privacy."
"They probably didn't even notice, right?" Tea asked. "Probably too busy with each other."
"Yeah, they were kind of---um---already---" Mokuba couldn't even finish his sentence; he trailed off again, and Joey was the first to put the pieces together.
"Holy shit! You saw 'em----really doing it? Sweet!" Everyone rolled their eyes.
"Well, aside from the perverted aspect," Tristan said dismissively, pushing Joey a little to get him to stop laughing, "are you glad?"
"Yeah!" Mokuba said, brightening a little. "Even though Seto is nice enough, I think he needed a girlfriend."
"He needed a woman," Joey said through a guffaw.
"Shut up, Joey," Tea said, elbowing him lightly. "AnywayI think they're so cute together. She really helps him relaxand don't take that in a perverted way," she said, directing her last comment to Joey and Tristan, who instead snickered quietly to themselves.
"She really does---Oh, and that reminds me!" Mokuba said eagerly. "I heard someone playing the piano this morning, too. I don't know which one of them was doing it, but it was really pretty. Seto used to play sometimes, but he hasn't done it in forever, 'cause he got busy with all the company stuff and everything. I think it was her, because it was a song I've never heard before and it was played differently. When Seto used to play, he liked to play really classical stuff. This wasn't---it was like really creepy and out-there, but it was really pretty and sad-sounding too. It's hard to describe."
"Wow," Yugi said. "I didn't know she played a musical instrument."
"Now that you mention it, Robin's pretty mysterious once you start thinking about her," Tristan said thoughtfully. "We really don't know that much about her, except that she's a duelist in the Battle City tournament----"
"And can kick Kaiba's ass in a duel," Joey interjected.
"Anyway, as I was saying," Tristan said with an irritated look, "she seems really smart and funny, and she's obviously really sweet, otherwise she couldn't put up with Kaiba----no offense, Mokuba, " he said quickly, noticing the latter's glare. "Seriously, though, I didn't think so at first, but she is a lot like him in a way----there's a way she has of looking at you with those dark brown eyes that makes you think, 'Whoa, she has a lot more going on in her head than what she's saying.' Did anybody else notice that?"
"I kinda did," Yugi spoke up. "But she's really cheerful and, well, somehow she's just completely disarming. You saw the way she handled Kaiba----it was like she knew exactly what to say to break through to a side of him I personally have never seen before. It's almost like they were kindred spirits or something."
"Do you think she'll change him?" Tea asked Mokuba.
"I don't know---I doubt it, though. I've lived with him all my life, ya know, and I don't think anybody can change him too much. Seeing him with her kinda reminded me of when he was younger----he was smiling more than he has in a long time."
"Aw, that's so sweet," Tea said. "Hey, do you think we should---I don't know, maybe give them a little party or something?"
"Why?" The rest of the group voiced the question as one.
"Well, maybe to celebrate them finally getting together----hush, Joey," Tea said preemptively. Joey gave a look of "What did I do?"
"That would be kinda nice," Mokuba said, "except Seto doesn't care for parties too much."
"He might like it if a certain lady was going to be there," Tristan said teasingly. "Heck, they might create a little entertainment themselves if we let 'em loose."
"I know!" Tea cried suddenly. "Why don't we make it a Battle City party? Since Mokuba knows the name of everyone in the tournament, we could invite them to a big place like Domino Square and have a dancing party, with a DJ and----"
"I'll DJ if we have a party!" Joey cried, suddenly getting interested. "You guys don't have a feel for party music like I do." The group was suddenly quietly abuzz with plans, punctuated by giggles and much anticipation.
Seto and I continued our tour of Battle City together, creating quite a stir as we did so.
"Have you noticed that everyone seems to be really surprised at seeing me walk around with a girl?" he asked as we walked.
"I guess it's because you've been so independent, it's hard for people to picture you with someone," I said honestly. "But independent is good. I'm independent, unless I don't know what the hell I'm doing."
"I always know what I'm doing," Seto replied, with a touch of pride.
"Well, that's all well and good for geniuses like yourself," I said, teasingly stroking his hand, "but for us normal people, sometimes you get into uncharted territory and it's just like, 'OK, someone else take over and drive, because I have no fucking idea where we're going!'" I laughed at my own joke. Seto smiled slightly.
"Good thing you're with me, then." I detected a hint of his infamous ego in his voice, but decided not to take it personally.
"Yep, it's definitely a good thing," I said in response, then thought to myself, "Definitely a very good thing." I felt very protected and comfortable----the best I'd felt in years. I was in a better mood than ever, and I get very hyper when I'm in a good mood----curious, cheerful, the works. Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me.
"I wonder how many people are left in the tournament?" I asked, cocking my head in thought.
"Well, there's a way to find out." Seto tapped a button on his duel disc. A few seconds later, I heard the chirpy little voice of Mokuba respond.
"Hey, big brother, what's up?"
"Find out how many duelists are left in the tournament, if you will, Mokuba."
"O---OK. Funny thing---I was just about to do that myself." Mokuba's voice fell silent for a minute, then spoke back up. "OK, of the hundred duelists that were originally in the tournament, forty-six are still left."
"Hmm, a little under half. Still a pretty big tournament, but I have a feeling it'll get trimmed down pretty easily," Seto mused quietly to himself. "All right. Thanks, Mokuba."
"Any time, big bro." The speaker clicked off.
"Wow, sounds like there's still a lot of dueling to be done," I said thoughtfully.
"And a lot of rare cards to win," Seto said with a smile. (Did I hear a little greed in his voice?)
"Why do you like to get a lot of the rare and powerful monsters?" I asked, out of innocent curiosity.
"I want to be the number-one duelist in the world, like I used to be." His face went suddenly very solemn, and I felt a little chilly---and not just from a breeze, if you catch my drift.
"I'm sorry, did I upset you?" I asked, concerned that I'd pissed him off again.
"No, you didn't. I just remembered----some things." Things that really got to him, evidently; I felt the arm that was wrapped around my waist tense slightly.
"Seto, I realize this is one of your greatest ambitions----forgive me for asking so many questions, but I am curious: why is being number-one in the world so important? What does it give you?"
His face went from solemn chill to pleasant thoughtfulness in the span of a few seconds, and he was silent. Then he spoke. "You know, I'd never really given it much deep thought. It was just something I wanted to do, something I wanted to achieve."
"I have an idea," I piped up timidly. "I wonder if some of your driving ambitions are deeply seated within the fear you and I talked about before----the feeling of not being loved unless you are the best. Do you think that could be part of it, or is that bullshit?" I sounded like a fucking psychologist, but oh well.
"I'm not really sure about that," Seto replied, "but you could possibly be right."
"Being that I've been on the top of my respective field before, I can understand how you must have felt when---um, when Yugi defeated you," I said, and as expected I felt his arm tense around me again. "Sorry if I brought up more bad memories, but I promise this is going somewhere good."
"All right," Seto said, a little uneasily.
"Well, did I tell you that I sing?"
"You do?" He paused, and then asked, "Well, what does that have to do with me and my---defeat?" He looked reluctant to even say the word; I knew he must have been boiling under that calm control. God, his self-control is so sexy.
"It's relevant, be patient," I said jokingly. "See, I was involved in choruses in high school, and I was a pretty good alto, if I do say so myself. I was the one to pick up the part and help others in the alto section get it as well, and I sang loudly so others would be able to get the part if they hit a rough patch. People keyed in on my voice---I was the strength of the alto section for a time. One might have called me 'the Seto Kaiba of the alto section,' though that would have been a great compliment to me and an insult to you." I nudged him, indicating I was flattering him.
"Don't put yourself down."
"Oh, I do it all the time," I said dismissively. "Anyway, one year there was this big choral clinic that was held across the state----it's comparable to a dueling tournament, because all the best choral musicians across the state are selected by audition, go to a two-day set of rehearsals, and perform a concert together. I had done this particular clinic the year before, and so everyone considered me a shoo-in for this year. Even I did, and I usually didn't jinx myself like that." I paused, remembering just how overconfident I had become, and shuddered. "I went and auditioned, along with three other students, but when the results came back, a girl who had not been in chorus even a semester made it in, while I did not."
Seto looked confused. "Did you ever find out what happened?"
I shook my head. "I was so damn pissed. I was a six-year veteran of the choral program in the school system, I had been to more prestigious choral clinics than that one before, and yet a girl who had virtually no experience beat me out? I was confounded and utterly disappointed!"
"God, you sound like me," Seto said, a rare sheepish look on his face.
"I felt like you did, too," I said. "But that defeat helped me so much."
"How did a defeat help you?" He looked as if I had just told him that the world was flat.
"It did," I quietly insisted. "Because of not getting in, I was forced to reevaluate my singing ability, my choral technique, everything. I realized then that I had become complacent and let myself relax, and you can't do that in a choral setting. You just can't. In other words, my defeat was a wake-up call, and now I'm a better choral musician because of it. Not saying that you needed a wake-up call----I'm just saying I understand how one can feel when you're at the top and then suddenly at the bottom. It sucks."
"Who do you think you're telling?" Seto replied, a tinge of tiredness in his voice.
"Well, my God!" I said, teasing him. "You've only lost, what----two duels in your whole life? Heck, I once lost five times in the space of three hours!" I laughed at my own stupidity and grinned a silly grin at him. "Of course, that was when I was first starting out dueling, so I didn't know too much anyway." He brightened a bit at my mentioning my own shortcomings.
"Maybe I'm not too bad after all," he said thoughtfully, and pulled me a little closer.
"Oh, you're not bad at all," I said, winking at him. "You're, ahem, really good. Know what I mean?" My naughty laugh slipped out, indicating I was thinking about something else entirely, and Seto smiled a rare, but genuine smile. Awwww!
"So, have we contacted everyone via duel disc?" Tea asked, looking over Mokuba's shoulder at the laptop screen.
"I think so, Tea," he replied, shutting down the application and closing the laptop. "They all know that the party starts at 7:00 p.m. in Domino Square."
"Wow, that's cool how you can contact the other duelists just by usin' that little speaker on the side there," Joey commented, looking at his own duel disc. "You know, I never even knew that thing was there."
"My brother designed it so that we could keep tabs on all the duelists. You see, if you punch in a number over here from 1 to 100, you instantly call up a duelist and you can talk to 'em." Mokuba showed them the tiny three-digit panel on the duel disc.
"Sweet," Tristan said, looking at Joey's duel disc. "Kaiba has a few good ideas every now and then." He dodged a joking punch from Mokuba quickly.
"So now what do we do?" Yugi asked, looking as if he was in deep thought.
"Well, we have to get some music, of course----and we can broadcast the sound over those giant TV screens in Domino Square, so no problem there" Mokuba thought a minute. "What kind of music would she like?"
"I don't know," Tea said, thinking hard. "Probably any good dance music. Come on, let's go look for some CDs." She and Mokuba got up and ran off, leaving Yugi, Joey and Tristan to think.
"I hope this party works out," Yugi said, looking hopeful. "I think it'll be really good for everyone."
"Yeah, if Kaiba will even get out and dance any," Joey said jokingly. "Tristan, you'll have to get pictures if he does dance. I'll be runnin' the music."
"Blackmail pictures?" Tristan asked, dissolving into laughter, and Joey nodded and elbowed him in the side, starting to laugh along with him.
"Oh, come on, guys, he's probably just shy about getting too wild in public," Yugi said, his own shyness showing itself through a deep pink blush. "I don't care for it too much myself, but if I'm with good people, then it doesn't seem to matter."
Tristan and Joey finally stopped laughing so hard and composed themselves. "He'll be with good people, that's for sure," Tristan commented. "Probably she won't let him out of her sight, seeing as how she has such a crush on him." He paused and thought for a minute. "I still can't believe she actually---"
"Fucked him?" Joey finished cheerfully. "Yeah, it's kind of weird. I guess it's because we're guys that we can't understand the attraction." He shuddered. "Even if I was a girl, I don't think I could understand being attracted to Kaiba."
Tea and Mokuba came back just then, each carrying a little bag of CDs and both out of breath. "Whew" Tea said through panting. "Finally found some."
"Ran all over the city looking for 'em," Mokuba added, "but we got some really cool music."
"Really? Let me check it out." Joey pulled out one of the CDs and read off the track listing on the back. "Aw, sweet! Look at this, Tristan! They got 'Bump, Bump, Bump' on here!"
"If we play that, Kaiba might have a wild woman on his hands," Tristan said with a snicker. "Sounds like they did a whole lot of bump-bump-bumping already---ow!" He held his arm in mock pain from Mokuba's punch.
"You deserved that," Tea said with a giggle.
"Whatever." Tristan shrugged it off.
Joey was busy digging through the CD bags. "Oh, kick ass! You guys got it all in here!"
"You mean that dance mix?" Tea said. "That's one of my favorites. 'Rhythm Is A Dancer' is my favorite song for when I want to just let loose----I have that CD at home, so I listen to it all the time."
"Cool." Joey sifted through the bag and held up another CD. "Techno dance music? Never heard of it."
"Seto probably would like that more," Mokuba said. "He's not that into a lot of other music, but he usually likes techno stuff."
"Sweet." The group pored over the CD bags and chattered quietly over them, watching their celebration taking shape.
"Damn, how'd it get to be late afternoon already?" I said, looking at my watch.
"Well, we have been walking around and talking for a while," Seto said with a relaxed smile as he looked at me. He was right----we had toured the whole of Battle City and had finally settled down to rest on a bench a couple of blocks away from where we started.
"Oh, well, I suppose time really does fly when you're having fun," I said happily, and looked up into Seto's sexy blue eyes with a smile.
"I feel the same way," he said, sounding very peaceful. "I've enjoyed finding out how alike we are. You were right; we did turn out so similarly even though different events shaped us."
"Thanks," I said shyly. "I'd say you turned out pretty good. 'Least from what I can see---and from what I saw last night," I said teasingly, holding his hand in mine and stroking it playfully.
Seto blushed a little. "Your friends were certainly hyper about that this morning. Couldn't get them off the subject."
"Yeah," I agreed. "Well, they've heard me talking about you nonstop, so I guess they were glad to see my feelings get returnedand returned very well, I must say."
"You're very kind." My heart melted all over again at seeing the gentle, calm expression in his eyes.
"Aw." I couldn't help but say it; he looked so sweet.
"What?"
"You just looked so sweet." He did; in the golden-red rays of sunset, his eyes showed up so strikingly blue, making the expressions that much easier to read.
"Well, you look pretty nice too," he said, and for the first time leaned in for a kiss on my lips. I let him kiss me for as long as he would, knowing he probably was a bit nervous, but he sure didn't seem like it. He seemed as confident as ever, and damn, that was sexy as hell.
Seto pulled away, and I smiled. "Quick learner," I complimented him.
"You expected anything less?"
"No, can't say that I did," I said airily. "You always go above and beyond my expectations anyway." I giggled, but it quickly descended my vocal scale to turn into my naughty laugh, and I winked flirtatiously.
"Don't make me come over there." He smiled slightly at me.
"Oh, I'll make you come, all right," I thought to myself. "Meow." But I decided to settle down instead and snuggled up against his shoulder.
"This is nice," I said, completely relaxed.
"Yeah."
"Beats sitting at home doing nothing any day." The sunset was on our right, and so when I looked up at him, he appeared to be silhouetted by the soft light.
"Has anyone ever told you that you look really sexy in the sunset light?" He did, really; the light turned every gesture, every smile and every look into a work of art.
"No, I don't think you have. Has anyone ever told you that?" Seto asked me quietly.
"Nope, not that I can think of."
"Well, you are."
"Aw." He was being sweet again.
