Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Seto Kaiba's Perfect Match ❯ A New Plan Arises ( Chapter 13 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
I walked down the familiar streets of Battle City, my feet unconsciously taking me where they would. My conscious mind was too busy at the moment.
As I turned the corner, four familiar faces greeted me.
"Hey, Robin!" I heard Yugi's cheerful voice first, and I looked up to see the group running towards me. I tried my best to look as happy as I could, but they stopped short when they saw a tear slide down my cheek.
"Whoa, what's eatin' you?" Joey said, his eyes widening slightly in shock at seeing my normally cheerful disposition replaced with my current mood.
"Robin? Are you all right?" Yugi came up to me and looked up into my eyes. "No, you're not all right. What's the matter?"
"What happened?" Tristan asked, a joking grin spreading across his face. "Is Kaiba too busy with his company to pay you any attention?" I stiffened at Tristan's mentioning Seto, and shuddered involuntarily.
"What'd I say?" he asked, and I shook my head, not wanting to speak.
"Oh, God. You and him had a fight?" Tea asked, nodding wisely, as if she knew.
"Some----something like that," I stuttered out amidst suppressed sobs.
"Oh, shit," Tristan said, covering his mouth at realizing his blunder. "I'm----oh, God, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have joked with you like that."
"It's all right, you had no way to know," I replied softly.
"Well, how's about us sittin' down over here and talkin' about it, huh?" Joey asked gently. I nodded, and the five of us walked over to a bench and sat down, Yugi and Tea on either side of me, and Joey and Tristan sitting in front of me on the ground.
"Well, first of all, what happened?" Yugi asked, speaking gently. I proceeded to spill everything----about the threatening e-mail, about Seto's distrust of me, and being accused of being involved in something of which I had no knowledge. When I finished my tale, I was almost completely dissolved in tears, and Tea patted my back gently.
"It's OK to cry, Robin," she said softly. "You've been through hell in the past few hours."
"Yeah," Tristan agreed. His eyes narrowed. "I knew it, I knew Kaiba would pull something like this. And to think I told him last night that he was an OK guy by me---" His fists clenched, and he gritted his teeth.
"Yo, Tris, you better calm down," Joey said, patting Tristan's shoulder. "Who knows, we might get this thing over with and make nice with everyone again."
"I just wish I could rewind to last night," I said, sadness making my voice a quiet wail. "It was so nice, just being with him and talking to y'all---I really felt like I belonged. Now---hell, he doesn't give a damn about me. Being suspicious of my motives the way he is, I don't really blame him for being angry, but when I tried to explain my side of it, he wouldn't hear it."
"Asshole," Tristan muttered angrily.
"Now, we don't need to start any name-calling," Yugi said bravely, looking at Tristan pointedly. "We need to find the people who wrote the letter, see what's really going on. Then we can point the fingers."
"I'd like to point a finger at Kaiba and ask him, 'Where do you get off treating a wonderful girl like Robin like this? She doesn't deserve to be treated like shit!' That's what I'd like to do." Fire blazed in Tristan's eyes as he said it, and his words seemed full of venom.
"If you can believe it, I'm not really angry at him," I said slowly. "I feel like it's my fault that he doesn't trust me. I tried to be a good girlfriend----I really did----" My lower lip trembled uncontrollably, and my eyes flooded and spilled over into a well of anguish. I put my head on Tea's shoulder and started to cry, and she put her arms around me and comforted me quietly.
"Shh," she whispered softly, stroking my long brown hair gently. "It's gonna be OK. We'll get this thing straightened out." After a few minutes I looked up.
"Thanks, Tea."
"Anytime," she responded cheerfully.
Through a hidden camera in a streetlamp, the Big Five watched Seto Kaiba's new ex-girlfriend, grieving and being comforted by her friends.
"Well, Seto's a bit less changed than we thought," Big One said, leaning back in his chair thoughtfully.
"How so?" asked Big Four.
"See for yourself----he shattered her heart like she meant nothing to him," Big One replied, angling the TV screen, which showed Big Four the evidence plainly.
"Our letter must have worked," Big Three said evilly, rubbing his hands together craftily.
"Yes, it certainly seems to have done the trick," Big Two added, chuckling a little. "I must say, it was a brilliant idea you had, Big Five."
Big Five, sitting apart from the others, smiled broadly. "It rather was, wasn't it?" he said proudly.
"It places everything in our favor," Big One said, stroking his chin. "We needed the girl out of Seto's life----he was becoming too soft and too gentle. But we couldn't very well have her killed; that would have been too obvious and we would have been caught. By simply threatening his authority, he gets rid of her himself, because he's too suspicious to keep a possible threat to him around. He's been betrayed so many times in his life, but this time that also works in our favor, because our fingerprints are technically not on this."
"Which is excellent," Big Four added.
"Yes----quite wonderful indeed," Big Three said. "Our company is safe, and hopefully Seto will be back to his old self in no time." All five chuckled evilly, locked safely away in their hiding place, where no one could ever trace anything to them. Ever.
"Do you know who sent the letter?" Yugi asked.
"I myself don't know," I said, "but Seto seems to think that his associates sent it to try to take over his company again. He thinks I'm in league with them."
"God, for a genius, Kaiba can sure be an idiot sometimes," Joey said with a laugh. "He should know that you of all people wouldn't do something like that to him."
"I wonder if there's a way we can find out where they are," Tea said thoughtfully. "There's gotta be a way we can trace the email and find out."
"I'm sure Kaiba would know. Too bad we can't ask him because he's being a royal asshole," Tristan muttered sardonically.
"Well, we don't need to ask Kaiba," Yugi said, looking like he had an idea. "Couldn't we ask Mokuba?"
The light seemed to click on. "Yeah---" Joey said, cocking his head in thought. "That might work."
"Well, now that we've got an idea," Tea said, her voice rising in excitement, "we just gotta find Mokuba and ask him if he can get to some of his brother's technology and trace that email!" At this, she rose from her seat quickly. "That's a great idea, Yugi! We should go right now!"
"I'll come, too," I said, wiping a couple of errant tears from my eyes and trying to stand up.
"Oh, no you don't," Yugi said kindly but firmly, putting a hand on my shoulder. "You don't need to be in all this excitement right now. What you need is some stability. Tristan, would you mind staying with her while we go to find Mokuba?"
Tristan nodded dutifully. "Sure will, Yugi."
Yugi nodded and looked at me. "Are you going to be all right?"
"I think so," I replied. "It's just been a hell of a morning."
He laughed. "I believe I have to agree with you!" He paused, then spoke again. "Listen, we'll get this thing fixed. You and Kaiba are too good together to be pulled apart by this."
"Hey, Yuge! Ya comin'?" Joey called. He and Tea were already halfway down the block.
"I'm coming!" Yugi called back brightly, waving at them. He turned to me and smiled. "See you later, Robin, OK?"
"Yeah, see ya," I replied, and watched as the three of them headed off.
Once they disappeared from view, it was just Tristan and me left on the bench.
"So----anything special you wanna do?" he asked me----I could tell he was tiptoeing on eggshells, trying not to anger me.
"Uh, not much," I said, shrugging my shoulders sadly.
"I didn't think so," he said, and looked down, as if thinking hard about something. Then he finally spoke again.
"You know, Robin, I just don't get Kaiba sometimes." Tristan sighed heavily. "You think you've got him all figured out, and you think you're seeing the real him, and then----poof----he up and does something like this." Pausing a minute, he then added, "I was worried he'd do some kind of dumb shit like this."
"Tristan, you're more upset than I am, and I'm the one who's being accused of wrongdoing!" I said, playfully pushing him.
"Well, I guess I just hate to see girls get mistreated by the men they love. I mean, if a girl was that devoted to me, I'd sure as hell not suspect her of anything. That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard in my life."
My chest felt like a ton of bricks was laid on top of it as I thought about what had happened. "I----I just don't understand it, Tristan," I said, my voice sounding like a lost little girl's. "I tried to be demure and kind, because he likes to be dominant; I matched him in mental prowess, although in different subjects sometimes, because I know he would only respect a woman as talented as he is; and for God's sake, I let him have his pride without shooting him down every chance I got. Isn't that enough to let him know I wouldn't cross him for anything?" I leaned forward, putting my head in my hands. "I feel like it's my fault, because I didn't do enough to make him feel like he could trust me fully."
"That's bullshit and you know it, Robin," Tristan said, patting my back. "I saw you with him----you changed him, at least for a little while. I saw him out there dancing with you and saw the way he acted when you sang to him and heard him give a glowing review of your music. Whatever this is, Robin, you have to know that this will pass."
"I hope you're right, Tristan," I said, raising my head from my hands wearily. "I justI don't want this to turn out like every other relationship I've had, where I'm judged not right or not enough. Damn it, if they gave a prize for trying so hard to love everyone and always being kind and never being mean, would I win it or what?" My laughter was full of pain, and I sighed heavily. "I devote myself so totally to the people I truly love, and it hurts when I'm rejected. I just don't want to end up an old maid and alone, and I thought Seto was the kind of man I could spend the rest of my life with and love and care for, even when we're both old and gray." I hesitated, and then spoke, even though my voice shuddered. "All I've wanted was a man who was my equal----my perfect match, you might say. I found that perfect match in him. Now if only he could see that I could be his perfect match."
"And the plot thickens," Big Two said, watching and hearing the teary-eyed girl give an honest confession of her love for their former boss.
"Damn, this girl is really upset," Big Four said. "Makes me almost regret sending that email----almost." He chuckled nastily.
"Ah, just as well we got her away from him," Big Three said with a sigh. "KaibaCorp doesn't need an emotional man as its leader."
"It needs us," Big One spoke up, "but we know not to try that again. It's not worth all the expense we went through changing his game and being defeated in it." The others agreed, and they went back to their previously scheduled duties.
As I turned the corner, four familiar faces greeted me.
