Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Shadowy Links to the Past ❯ A Past Revealed ( Chapter 3 )
Thanks for the nice reviews. Calupe, I know Wicca isn't witchcraft, but people who don't know about Wicca usually call it witchcraft. And I can't seem to find where I had Dwenny calling herself a witch? The whole Pegasus connection thing you'll see in this chapter. And Cerridwen is the name of a Celtic goddess. Thanks for reviewing!
Yeah, I'll try to update sooner, if I can. Depends on how much homework and stuff that I have. But if you really want me to update sooner, then I'm gonna have to cut down on the length of the chapters…*shrugs* You can decide: shorter chapters and sooner updates, or longer chapters and later updates.
Oh, btw, I've decided I'm just gonna have Dwenny be a good witch, as opposed to a Wiccan. I really don't know enough about Wiccan beliefs and such to make Dwenny a believable Wiccan. So yeah, it'll make my life easier if she is just a good witch.
Disclaimer: Same as always. Don't own anything Yugioh. Oh, and the spells I got from the internet.

Chapter 3: A Past Revealed
Dwenny, Yugi and company reached the Turtle Game Shop in no time, with Yugi giving Dwenny directions on how to get there. As they all climbed out of her red convertible, Dwenny looked at the game shop, and gave Yugi a quizzical look, "You live in a game shop?" she asked.
Yugi nodded. "Actually, I live above it, with my grandpa." He opened the door, calling out, "Grandpa! I'm home!" He waited for an answer, but there was none. Hmm…I guess he went out. Yugi led everyone up the stairs and into the living room. He turned to Dwenny as his friends settled down. "Can we free Yami now?"
Dwenny smiled at his concern. "Of course." She motioned for Yugi to sit down on the sofa, which he did. Then she knelt down before him, and placed her hands lightly around the Puzzle, not actually touching it. Focusing her magick, she began to chant: "This spell that was cast, I cast into the sea. Plunged into inky depth, here it finds eternal rest. The harm that was sent, consider it spent. No more misery shall we see, this is my will, so mote it be!"
Inside his soul room, Yami felt the dark spell that trapped him start to waiver, but only for a brief moment. He wondered what was going on, and if Yugi was ok.
Dwenny opened her eyes. She looked at the Puzzle, and still saw the reddish band around it. This spell is strong.
"It didn't work, did it?" Yugi asked quietly. He thought about Yami being trapped, and not knowing what had happened. Tears started to from in his eyes. I'm so sorry Yami. I can't even help rescue you. I've failed you, just like when I almost lost you in the flames after that first attack by Marik.
"Don't give up yet, Yugi," Dwenny said. "There's still hope of freeing Yami. This spell is very strong, and to break it, I have to attack it at its source, where it is exactly binding and trapping Yami." She paused. "But to do that, I need your help."
Yugi wiped away some of his tears. "You don't need my help. I can't do anything right," he whispered, tears threatening again. He lowered his head in defeat.
Dwenny reached out a hand, gently lifting Yugi's face so she could look him directly in the eyes. "Never think that, Yugi, or else the darkness will overcome you, and it will destroy you. I can sense a purity and light within you. Don't let it fade with despair." She paused. "Yami needs you to be strong for him now. He believes in you as well."
Yugi thought about what she said. Yami had once told him that he believed in him, that he was courageous and had a heart of a Pharaoh. Yugi nodded finally. "Alright, what do I need to do?"
Dwenny smiled, glad that she had gotten through to him. "I want you to think hard, Yugi. Where is it most likely that the spell has its affect? Where could it stop Yami from contacting with you?"
Yugi thought for a few minutes. His eyes widened as he thought of something, and he slapped his forehead. "His soul room of course! When the spell first took affect, I remember seeing the door to Yami's soul room glowing red, and being unable to open it."
"Soul room? Where is Yami's soul room then?"
"Inside my mind. You see, we each have our own soul rooms, and there is a hallway where we meet each other."
Dwenny nodded. She took a deep breath. "Looks like I'll have to enter your mind then. If it's ok with you."
"If it will help Yami, of course I don't mind."
Joey couldn't keep quiet any longer. "Hold on a second here, Yuge. You can't be serious. Let her into your mind?!"
"She could put a spell over you while in there, and we wouldn't even know it!" Tea added.
Dwenny let out an exasperated sigh. Yugi's friends were really starting to annoy her now.
"I keep telling you guys," Yugi said. "I trust her. I think she's already proved today that she's on our side. Besides," he added, "I'd do anything to help Yami." He nodded to Dwenny. "I'm ready."
Dwenny nodded back. She placed her hands lightly on Yugi's temples, then closed her eyes. When she opened them, she found herself in what appeared to be a hallway. Looking to the right, she saw a glowing red door. Looking left, she smiled when she saw Yugi standing in front of his door. She walked up to Yami's door, examining it. Yugi stayed near his door, not wanting to be in the way.
Using her right hand, Dwenny drew a symbol over the door, the rune Eiwaz. It looked like two parallel lines connected by a single vertical line. Then she took her left hand and began moving it widdershins (counter-clockwise) in front of the door, focusing all of her magick on the spell. She started chanting: "With this charm and magick verse, I turn around this wicked curse. As these words of mine are spoken, let this evil spell be broken!"
Dwenny stepped back as the redness began to fade, finally disappearing completely. The door swung open, revealing a rather surprised Yami. He looked at Dwenny with astonishment, his crimson eyes staring into her emerald ones. She smiled a small one and nodded, stepping to the side so Yugi could rush over to Yami.
Yugi wrapped his arms around Yami's waist, tears forming in his eyes. "Yami, you're safe! I was so worried I'd never see you again!"
Yami smiled, returning Yugi's embrace. "Not as much as I was worried for you, Yugi. I'm glad that you are safe."
Yugi let go of Yami, then turned to Dwenny and smiled. "All thanks to Dwenny. You should have seen her, Yami! She was amazing. She put Marik's men right in their place!"
Yami's eyes darkened. "Marik? Marik was behind all of this?" Anger started to build within him.
Dwenny immediately sensed his anger. "Calm down Yami. Anger won't solve anything."
Yami forced himself to calm down a bit, controlling his anger. "Yes, I know." He looked at her. "Thank you for freeing me, as well as saving Yugi from harm. I am in your debt."
Dwenny waved a hand, dismissing his statement. "No debt owed. You would have down the same if the situations were reversed." She stared into Yami's crimson eyes.
Yami hesitated. Ever since he had first seen her, sensed her, he wanted to talk with her, figure out why she was so familiar to him. The first time they had talked, he had froze, not knowing what to say. Now, here she was, in Yugi's mind, just having saved him and Yugi. And here he was, frozen again! What's going on here? Yami thought. I can face the toughest of duelist with calm and confidence, but I can't even talk to this girl!
There was silence a few minutes, no one not really knowing what to say. Dwenny finally cleared her throat a bit. "Well, I should be going. You two probably have a lot to talk about." She closed her eyes and bowed her head, then her image disappeared.
Yami stared at the place where Dwenny had been standing. Darn it! Missed another chance again!
Back in Yugi's living room, Dwenny opened her eyes and stood up. She glanced down at Yugi's Puzzle, noting that the reddish band was gone. Yugi opened his eyes, glancing up at her and smiling. "Thank you so much for helping. Yami and I will be eternally grateful."
Dwenny smiled. "You're welcome, Yugi." She looked behind the sofa, sensing Yami's presence. She gave him another small smile, and he nodded in return. Dwenny looked around, noticing Yugi's friends were all staring at her and Yugi. She doubted that they'd trusted her by now. She also doubted if they would ever trust her. When people don't understand something, then they won't trust it. Yami and Yugi at least had their Millennium Puzzle, so they knew something about magick. Being a witch, even a good one, sure made it hard to make friends sometimes. No one seemed to understand her. But for some odd reason, she felt as if Yami understood her, understood what she was going through. She couldn't really explain it, but she felt as if they had some deep connection with each other, from the past…
Dwenny felt Bestian's paw on her leg. She automatically bent down and picked him up. She scratched his ears a little as she turned to Yugi. "Well, I should be going now. I'm glad that everything worked out ok." Dwenny was ready to leave, when she heard the front door downstairs open. A moment later, Yugi's grandpa could be heard trudging up the stairs. He walked into the room, looking down at a package in his hands.
"Yugi, I just picked up this new package of cards for the game shop. After you're done with you friends, could you…" his voice trailed off when he saw Dwenny standing there, with Bestian in her arms. The old man eye's widened upon recognizing her. "My word!" he exclaimed, "I don't believe my eyes! How can this be?"
Everyone looked confused. "What do you mean, Grandpa?" Yugi asked.
Grandpa was still shaking his head. "This girl's face looks exactly like that of a duel monster's!"
Yugi and his friends gasped, turning to stare at Dwenny in disbelief. Dwenny looked down. She knew were this was going to lead to. Looks like they will finally find out where I come from. I hope they can understand… She put down Bestian, and began mentally preparing herself for the inevitable conversation.
"Are you sure, Grandpa?" Yugi asked. He knew his grandpa's mind was somewhat fading, and that he got easily confused sometimes.
"Of course I'm sure!" Grandpa replied. "And I'll prove it." He ran back downstairs. A few minutes later, he returned, holding a card in his had. "See?" he said, showing everyone the card. "Her face and hairstyle look exactly like that of the Unfriendly Amazon."
The card showed a female standing with one hand on her hip, the other on her sword. She was dressed in a dark purple outfit that had spikes on the shoulder. She was also wearing long gloves that nearly reached the spikes. A long flowing dark headband kept part of her wild bangs from her eyes, and she wore her dark purple and black hair in a long braid. The card description stated: "Offer 1 of your monsters on your field as a tribute (excluding this monster) during each of your Standby phases. If cannot, this card is destroyed. Monsters used for Tribute-Summon or that are offered as Tributes due to other cards' affects are excluded." The card also showed that she had 4 stars, with an attack of 2000 and a defense of 1000.
Yugi's eyes widened as he looked at the card. "So that's why I recognized you at the dance! Because you look exactly like the Unfriendly Amazon card." He gave her a puzzled look. "But how can that be?"
"Well…" Dwenny started. She wasn't sure really where to start. She looked over at Yami. He had sensed her unease, and looked concerned for her. But like the others, he was also anxious to here her answer. Perhaps this is why she seems so familiar to me, he thought. But deep down he had a feeling that this wasn't the reason why.
"Well, come on, spit out already!" Joey said impatiently.
Dwenny sighed. She couldn't avoid this talk any longer. "I didn't want to tell you who I was, or where I came from right away, because I wanted to give myself a chance at maybe becoming friends with you," she said quietly.
"Go on," Yugi said gently.
"The reason why I look like that card, or rather why the card looks like me, is because…" She took a deep breath, "Is because the creator designed it after me," she finished quietly. There, she had said it. She kept her eyes on the floor, not wanting to look at anyone's reaction.
Yugi stared at her, his purple eyes wide. "You mean you know the duel monster's creator, Maximillion Pegasus? But how?"
Dwenny took a deep breath. She looked up, straight at Yugi and his friends. "Because he's my adopted uncle," she said evenly and calmly.
"What the heck!" Joey cried. "Oh, I just knew she was bad trouble. Looks like that creep Pegasus sent her after us! He still wants Yugi's Puzzle!"
Dwenny bit back an angry response, fighting to control her temper. Looks like they already didn't understand. She looked at Yami, whose crimson eyes were wide. He was just as surprised as everyone else. Dwenny hoped that he wouldn't hate her now. She sighed. "I know that you've had a rather bad…experience with him-"
She was cut off by Joey. "Bad? No, it was downright evil! What he put poor Yugi through was evil. Pure evil!"
Dwenny took a deep breath, still fighting to control her anger. She feared what could happen if she didn't. She tried to explain. "I know that what my uncle did was wrong, but he is not evil. He's just…heartbroken over the lost of Aunt Cecilia, and was willing to do anything to get her back." She looked at Yugi sadly. "Including stealing souls."
Yami could hardly believe what he was hearing. Dwenny was related to that evil Pegasus? He waited, hoping that there was some good reason why would even think of going hear him.
"I am truly sorry for what my uncle has done to all of you, put all of you through," Dwenny continued softly. "And I know that there's nothing I can say, nothing that I can do, that would help to erase the pain." She closed her eyes, tears sliding down her cheeks. "I should have never come here in the first place, and brought back the painful memories you all must have. I'm so sorry," she whispered.
"Why did you come here in the first place?" Yugi asked.
Dwenny sighed. "I don't really know why. I supposed I just wanted to get out of Duelist Kingdom for awhile. I watched you and your friends during the tournament, and you seemed like nice people. So I though maybe we could be friends." She shook her head. "It was a stupid idea."
Yugi looked at Yami, who was still staring at Dwenny. Yugi knew exactly what he was thinking, so he turned back to Dwenny. "You said that Pegasus is your adopted uncle?"
Dwenny nodded, already knowing what he was going to ask. "Yes, he is. When I was little, my father and Uncle Max were good friends. When I was 7, my parents were killed in a car accident. Uncle Max took me in and raised me as his own."
Just like how Grandpa took me in and is raising me, Yugi thought.
"You mean to tell me that that nut case Pegasus raised you since you were 7, and his evilness didn't rub off on ya?" Joey said. "Kinda hard to believe, if you ask me."
"No one was asking you anyways," Dwenny grumbled under her breath. To Joey, she said, "Uncle Max is not evil. You only know half the story. You don't know how he was before he got that wretched Millennium Eye." She said that last part with distaste, her gaze darkening.
"What happened then?" Yugi asked. He could tell that Dwenny didn't like the Millennium Eye too much.
"After Aunt Cecilia's death, Uncle Max had become so distant. He'd stay up in his room all day, not talking to anyone. Then one day, he left without a word or a good bye, leaving his servants to care for me. He never called, or wrote, to tell me where he was or if he was ok. I though he had disappeared, vanished off the face of the earth." She paused. "Then one day, several months after he had left, he came home. But he was so different. No longer caring and loving, but so cold and cruel sometimes. And he was wearing his Millennium Eye."
"So it was the Millennium Eye that had changed him?" Yugi asked.
Dwenny nodded. "Yes. Its power over him was strong, blocking anything except his obsession of getting Aunt Cecilia back. I kept trying to tell him that he couldn't bring her back, that is wasn't possible. But he wouldn't listen to me, instead rambling on and on how he had seen her, held her in his arms, while in Egypt. I thought he was going mad."
"That makes two of us," Joey grumbled.
"Then he started telling me about the Shadow Realm, and how great battles for power were waged in Ancient Egypt," Dwenny continued. "He told me he wanted to revive these Shadow Games as a modern card game. When I asked why, he only smiled and said I'd find out in later years. I didn't understand, but I helped him anyways. As a "reward" for helping, Uncle Max designed a card after me, except he made an older version of me…Well, there you have it. Now you know why the Unfriendly Amazon and I share the same looks." She finished. She looked at Yami, her eyes pleading for him to understand.
"Wait a minute!" Tea said. "Something doesn't sound match with your story."
Everyone turned to Tea, surprised. "What do ya mean, Tea?" Joey asked.
"At Pegasus's castle, I noticed that his symbol is that of a winged horse." She pointed to the pendant on Dwenny's forehead. "But yours, Dwenny, has a horn on its head. If you really were raised by Pegasus, then wouldn't you share the same symbol?" She lowered her arm, her eyes seemingly challenging Dwenny.
Dwenny took the challenge. "Just because he raised me, doesn't mean we have to use the exact same symbol. True, I did use his symbol as part of my own, but I thought that because I had magick, there needed to be something more. So I added a horn as a representation of my magick."
"Oh," Tea said. "I guess that makes sense." She looked a bit disappointed. She had thought she had found a glitch in Dwenny's story, something to convince Yugi that she couldn't be trusted.
Yugi pondered over what was just said, trying to put things together. Then he thought of something. "Dwenny, the last time we saw Pegasus, he didn't look so good. Do you know what had happened to him?"
Dwenny raised an eyebrow, surprised that Yugi would be concerned with her uncle, after all that had happened. "Yes. After his duel with you, he went up to Aunt Cecilia's sanctuary and freed the souls he had promised to free. After doing so, he was attacked, and his Millennium Eye was taken from him."
"Attacked? By who?"
Dwenny shook her head. "He doesn't know. I think his attacker must have erased him memory." She paused. "But it's good riddance to that thing. He's better off without it."
Yami was thinking to himself. Well, she may have been raised by Pegasus, but she's certainly nothing like him. But I still don't know why she seems so familiar to me. It's not because there is a car that looks like her. It's something entirely different. But what? He looked up from his pondering, noticing that Dwenny was once again staring at him, her emerald eyes pleading for forgiveness. Yami smiled, his own crimson eyes telling her that he understood, and that there was nothing to forgive.
Dwenny sighed in relief. At least Yami and Yugi still seemed to trust her. The others already didn't trust her, so her past most likely didn't change that opinion. That could be a problem later. She would like to be friends with Yami and Yugi, but she didn't want to get in between Yugi and his friends. Hopefully, she would be able to find a way to be their friends, without harming any of their existing friendships. Dwenny glanced at the clock. "Well, I really should be going now. Maybe I'll…see you around school tomorrow."
Yugi looked at her in surprise. "You're going to our school now?"
"Yes, I'm transferring in as a junior."
"Oh, that's too bad. We're only freshmen." Yugi smiled a little.
Dwenny returned the smile. "Well, maybe in between classes we'll see each to the then." She whistled, and Bestian came up to her. "Have a good night." Dwenny nodded to them, then walked out the room, down the stairs, and let herself out.
"Great, this is just great!" Joey said after Dwenny had left. "Now we gotta worry about her at school too? Man, this girl is popping up everywhere all of a sudden."
"You really shouldn't worry about her so much, Joey," Yugi said. "I know Dwenny would never hurt any of us. She did, after all, save all of us today."
Yami smiled. Yes, she did save them all, himself included. Her magick made her all the more intriguing. Yami was determined to find out why she seemed familiar to him. He had an idea, but he needed Yugi's help. He'll have to talk to him about it later that night, after everyone had left.

Hmm, this chapter didn't really turn on the way I had wanted…I had a case of Writer's block a bit this week. :) Anyways, so what plans does Yami have? Find out in the next chapter! Reviews would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
