Chapter 5
Disclaimer:
Standards apply. Angelique and Tenshi are both my own creations. The other new characters that are introduced belong to my friends Raven, Kayla, and Arielle.
Okay guys. A little authors note for y'all. The pairings so far are Angel and Kaiba, Malik and Raven, Cynthia and Yami, Tristan and Serenity, and for this chapter, Joey and Mai. In the next few chapters to come, though, I will begin to get more in depth with each character and how she/he receive their item and befriended his/her Yami. But, I don't think I need to do that for Yami Yugi, now do I? ^.^ Should be interesting, no? ^.^
A few warnings about this chapter before I go on, though. My theory about Joey's abusive father comes from the manga, not the anime. So, if you don't mind a little pain and beating on the poor duelist, then read on! But, it's all I could come up with! Sorries!
Also, I know I got a little more in depth with Mai and Joey and Serenity and Tristan than I did with the other three couples, but it will all work out in the end, trust me. ^.^
Well, Enjoy!

"Mmmm…. Doughnuts…" He mumbled in his sleep, drooling slightly in his dreams as he buried himself deeper into his covers. Once again, he was so far deep into his sleep that he didn't hear his alarm clock sound for school. But, that doesn't mean that his drunken father didn't.
"Joey! Get the hell up and turn that damn thing off!" When no answer came, he stormed into his son's room and yanked him out of bed. "YOU NO GOOD WHORE, TURN THAT DAMN THING OFF RIGHT NOW!" He screamed, throwing his now awake child into a wall. Joey gasped, doing as told, only to get backhanded one more time before his father left the room.
He groaned, rubbing his shoulder where it had been rammed into a wall. His arms still hurt from the beating that he was given for not being home when his dad came in drunk the night before, even though he had told the man several times that he would be with Yugi and Tristan at the game shop. He sighed, but that kind of stuff didn't do any good anymore. He sighed and got up, making sure his dad was asleep. He shook his head when he found him passed out on the couch again and threw a blanket over him before going to the bathroom and cleaning up for the day.
As he showered, he looked down at the bruises on his young body. Some were large and gaping, others small and nothing to worry about. He then lightly fingered the cut on his arm. He winced. It still hurt from when a glass bear bottle had been thrown at him a few weeks ago, catching his tender skin as it shattered against a table.
He shook the painful memories from his mind before getting out of the shower and getting dressed. He dared not to leave the house, knowing that when he came back, his father would give him another beat down. He doubted he could stand two in a row.
Joey sighed, shutting himself in his room, resting his blonde haired head on a pillow, closing his eyes. He sighed once more. ` Might as well get some more sleep… ' He thought, drifting into a light sleep.
An hour or so later, he heard the phone in his room go off. He gasped, cursing softly as he dashed to get it, tripping over a few bear cans as he grabbed it. "Wheeler Residence…" He wheezed into the phone after being slammed into a wall after his little walk on the cans.
"Are you okay, Joseph?" Mai's soft voice asked on the other end of the phone, concern showing in it.
He sighed, leaning against the wall a little, holding his arm. "Yeah… Just tired…"
"Sounds like you're in a lot of pain to me… You sure you're okay?" She asked, leaning against the trunk of her car as she spoke into her cell phone, really worried now.
"I'm fine, Mai…"
"JOEY, WHO IN THE HELL IS CALLING THIS HOUSE?!" His father boomed. Joey gasped. The call had wakened his father. He mentally cursed.
"Joey, are you okay?" Mai asked, looking at the phone in her hands a little from the corner of her eye.
She then heard a muffled grunt of pain come through the line before Joey moaned, "I'm fine… Gotta…. Go…. Talk… to ya… later…" He said between hisses of pain before hanging up.
"JOEY! Joey, don't hang up! JOEY!" She screamed, fright in her eyes. She growled, jumped into her car and sped off towards Joey's house. Once there, she ran up the small set of steps that led to their front door, pounding on the door. His father's old beat up truck was gone. She sighed, thankful.
Joey groaned as he walked to the door from the bathroom, trying to bandage a cut on his side that his father had given him after he hung up on Mai. He wasn't planning on answering the door, but Mai's frantic screams changed his mind. "What?" He asked, leaning against the doorframe for some support.
Mai gasped, grabbing onto him as he sunk towards the floor. "Oh my god, Joey! Are you okay?" She asked, helping him inside. Making him set on the couch, she looked around for something to help him clean up with, but only found a bunch of empty or half empty bottles around. She knew that his home life was bad, but not this bad. "Stay here…" She whispered, stroking his hair a moment before running back into the bathroom and looking for some towels and bandages.
Joey groaned in pain as he felt her hands on him a moment later, cleansing his cuts, bandaging him. "What in the hell has your dad been doing to you, Joey?" She asked, looking at the bruises that lined his arms, sides, and stomach.
"The normal…" He growled as she placed some peroxide on a few of the cuts. "Beating the hell outta me for no reason… Or over stupid shit…" He whispered, closing his eyes, trying to fight back the pain in his body and in his head. Mai noticed this once she finished attending to the worst of his cuts.
"Joey…." She whispered, sitting at his side, wrapping an arm around him. "Why didn't you tell me? Or one of the others?" She made him looked at her, caressing his bruised cheek softly.
"I… I didn't want to burden you all…" He whispered, closing his eyes, holding the hand that she held to his cheek in his own, kissing the palm of it. God he was so thankful for her comfort this time. He had dreamed of her tending to him like this, but never thought that the one girl he cared about would do this to him.
"Joey… Listen to me…" She cupped his face in her hands before making him look her in the eyes. "We care…. I care too much to see this happen to you…" She whispered, looking into his lovely brown eyes. "You don't deserve this…" She didn't realized it, but she was slowly moving forward, towards his face. "I love you too much to see this go on… to see you die…" She then kissed him softly.
He groaned at the soft touch of her lips, tears falling from his eyes. "Mai… I don't know what to do…." He buried his face into her chest, scared. She held onto him tight, comforting him.
"How about this… Let's get you looked at by a dr. and you can stay at my place tonight, okay? Then, tomorrow, we'll call your mom and get this taken care of so that you can be safe, alright?" She asked, looking deep into his eyes with her own amethyst ones. Joey hugged her tight.
"My love… where would I be without you?" He asked softly, a small smile of joy showing through his sorrow filled tears.
