"Kuso!"
Yugi tossed aside the broken sneaker lace and stood up to rummage in his top dresser drawer for a replacement. String. Six inch Goku action figure. "Hey! Three dollars. I can buy a booster pack." Six copies of Larvae Moth.
A tentative stirring in the link. //Aibou. You know, those sneakers have seen better days. You could buy some new ones.//
/No way. These sneakers took me all the way through Duelist Kingdom. They're my lucky pair./ Karibou plushie. With a tender hug, Yugi gently moved it from the drawer to the bed.
The faintest rippling of pain down the link. //But, aibou. Haven't you ever wondered why I wear boots when I transform?//
/No. Makes sense. Your feet are bigger than mine. Of course you can't wear my sneakers./
Yugi had the distinct impression Yami had just hit his forehead against something. He stopped his search. /Yami! Are you okay?/
A strangled tone. //I'm fine.//
Yugi frowned, not sure he believed the spirit, but then he shrugged and went back to hunting in the dresser. "I know I have an extra lace in here somewhere." He reached as far back as he could and grabbed something odd. Not a lace, but what was it? Yugi pulled out a small, flat, square package with "Trojan" written on it. His face reddened, and his eyebrows crawled for the safety of his hairline. "Yami!"
A low, muttered //I thought it might come in handy some time.//
Yugi stalked out of his room and into the bathroom, where he threw the condom into the trash. He started to leave but then turned. /What if grandpa sees it?/
//Be glad it isn't used?//
/Hn./ And with that, he ran downstairs, nearly tripping over his unlaced sneakers.
//Careful!//
Yugi managed an almost-controlled stop at the bottom, catching himself on the banister. /See I told you they were lucky./
He thought he heard muttering about, //Wouldn't need luck if he had decent shoes.//
Grandpa poked his head through the doorway. "Are you all right, Yugi? You didn't fall down the stairs, did you?"
"No, I'm fine," Yugi said cheerfully. "I don't suppose you know where my spare laces are?"
The elder Mutoh developed a cautious look. "Why, yes, Yugi, I do."
Yugi started to thank him, but the old man continued. "You know, Yugi, I could take you out shopping after school, and we could buy you some new shoes. Those old ones are looking a bit worn."
Sudden interest sparked in the link.
Frowning, Yugi glanced down at his shoes. There wasn't anything wrong with them that new laces wouldn't fix. "No thanks, grandpa. I want to keep these a bit longer."
Sullen settling in his head.
With a sigh, the elder Mutoh brought out a new pair of laces and handed them over. Beaming, Yugi threaded them, and fastened his sneakers. "Thanks, grandpa. See you tonight."
Twin sighs, one in his head, one in the open doorway, followed him out to the sidewalk.
Yugi hurried, the search for the laces having almost made him late. Jou and Honda met him at the door to the school. "Hurry, Yug. You'll just make it in time," Jou said.
Panting, Yugi dashed in the door, and they all hurried down the hall to their first class. "What's up?" Honda asked. "You're hardly ever late."
"My sneaker lace broke, and I had to get a new one." He shook his head. "And grandpa wanted me to get new shoes. Can you guys believe that?" Out of the corner of his eye, he caught the look that passed between the two boys. "What?"
Jou put his arms up in denial. "Nothing, Yug. Me and Honda love those sneakers. Really."
Satisfied, Yugi entered the classroom. But why could he sense strangled laughing through the link?
School passed mostly uneventfully until PE. Yugi did have a few awkward moments in history as Yami "corrected" most of the information about Ancient Egypt. Yugi had to work so hard at not laughing that he gave himself a coughing fit. The teacher shot him some odd looks but allowed him to flee for the water fountain in the hallway. After several gulps and a few pointed words with his yami, Yugi was able to finish class.
Yugi hurried to PE. They were playing soccer today, his favorite. On his way out of the locker room, he met Anzu.
"Hi Yugi. By the way, your sneakers are untied."
Yugi glanced down and saw that she was right. As he bent down to fasten them, she said. "Um, Yugi. About those sneakers..."
Yugi shot her a pained expression. "Not you too, Anzu. Everyone's after me today about them."
Anzu's face developed her most determined look. The one that usually preceded her getting what she wanted. "But, Yugi. Those sneakers make you..."
The boy held up a hand. "No more. I won't listen to any more comments about them."
A deep voice behind him. "Better listen to her. Those things make you look about eight years old."
Yugi whirled to face Kaiba, tears already forming in the corners of his big eyes.
Anzu, with one of those sudden shifts she did when Yugi was hurt or in danger, rounded on the bigger boy. "Kaiba, you take that back. Right now."
Kaiba shook his head and headed out to the field. "It's exactly what you were about to tell him."
Anzu turned to Yugi, but the smaller boy was already gone. Sighing, she followed Kaiba outside.
On the playground, Yugi sat miserably on the bars, sneakers swinging.
//Aibou?//
/Is it true?/
Gentle affection down the link. //Yes.//
Yugi scuffed the offending sneakers against each other. /Well, why didn't anyone tell me?/
//We tried, aibou. You wouldn't listen to us.//
Sighing, Yugi hopped down off the bars and started back for the school. /Okay, then. After school, I'll go buy some new shoes./
Excitement in the link. //Oh good. You know, there was this great pair of boots in the mall...//
/Don't push your luck./
Silence, mixed with quiet satisfaction, followed him into the building.
