Chapter One
If there was one thing Ryou enjoyed more than the slow and rhythmical way the dead leaves fell off the trees and crackled to the ground, it was listening to her iPod while walking through it all. Winter had yet to grace the inhabitants of the sleepy little town Ryou lived in with snow, but she didn't much mind the snow. Snow had a nasty habit of soaking through her boots and freezing her toes, something Ryou wasn't very keen about, but she so loved watching the leaves fall down and she loved crushing them beneath her boots. It was one of the rare few moments she felt like she could act like a kid again.
She peered down at her iPod when the song she'd been listening to ended and decided to turn it off. She was almost home, so there would be no point in turning it to another one. It was times like this that made Ryou almost consider getting a car. She was 16, so it was high time her father stopped working long enough to teach her how to drive. Ryou sighed inwardly, knowing the thought was impossible. Her father teach her to drive? Hah! She'd have a better chance of getting him to dress in a miniskirt and dance around outside while waving a flashlight. Still, driving around in a cute little car would be better than having to trudge the entire way home, especially since she lived all the way on the outskirts of the city. It wasn't a far walk, no, it probably took her about thirty minutes to get to school every morning (and to Ryou who loved walking, thirty minutes was not long at all), but the point still stood. Having a car would definitely make Ryou's life a little easier.
Having an overprotective dad did not, however, and Ryou had to wonder if he would ever let her act like a regular teenaged girl. All he did was work, work, work. No, they were not the least bit poor, but her father ran himself ragged trying to keep them living in the house they lived in. With Ryou's mother having passed away years ago, it did not help matters any and Ryou would often times walk in on her father wailing himself in a sea of tears. She was young when it happened, so the only thing she could say of her mother was that she remembered her face, and that was it. There were feelings of love, just out of spite, just because the woman had been her mother, but there was no relationship, there were no lasting memories or anything, nothing like her father had. And Ryou felt terrible for it, that she couldn't understand what her father was going through.
Ryou shook her head free of the thoughts. Now wasn't a time to be getting depressed. School had only started and she already had a big test at the end of the week she needed to study for. A corner was rounded and Ryou's brick, two-story house came into view. Her father had suggested moving out into a more remote area, not liking the way their old apartment was sandwiched between the city buildings, or how people always came to their front door asking for whatever. He figured the nice opened area of the country would do good for both of them. Needless to say, Ryou preferred the city, but that was just her. She'd lived in the city her whole life and was just now having to adjust to being away from people and...Ryou hated being alone.
She reached into the pocket of her jeans and fished out her house key, a little surprised when she tried to turn the lock, only to find that the door was unlocked. Strange...her father always locked the door, even when he was home. And he was usually home when she came home from school. A little on edge and anxious, Ryou swung the front door open, cringing a little when it squeaked really loud. Didn't her father say he would fix that? She'd just have to remind him again. He'd gotten so scatterbrained lately, he probably just forgot... and forgot to lock the door, too.
But...he usually was in the living room with the TV blaring and there was no noise in the house. Ryou closed the door, trying not to let her paranoia get the best of her. She always freaked out in situations like this when nothing at all was the matter. Curse her overactive imagination.
"Dad?" she called, feeling a little like she was putting a spotlight on herself, that she was the only living thing in the house. It was just too quiet. Noise, noise, she needed noise. "I'm home, Dad." No answer. Was he just sleeping in his room? He tended to do that sometimes. "Where are you?" Her voice echoed, and Ryou panicked a little. Pulling the strap of her book bag back onto her shoulder, she ascended the stairs and made her way into his bedroom, not bothering to knock on the door. "Daddy?"
She felt like a fool, a stupid, stupid, idiotic fool when she saw her father sprawled on his bed, snoring up a storm. Stupid, stupid, she got worked up over nothing. He was just asleep the whole time. Dammit, she frowned, wanting to slap herself as she walked down the hall to her own room. Here she was, letting her imagination rule her life, and it was making her freak out over nothing. How much longer would it be before she finally grew up and let those silly little fantasies fly away?
Her blue room lifted up her spirits a little when she crossed the threshold, shutting her door with her foot and making a beeline for her desk. Homework always came first, then playtime. Ryou had to blush at her thoughts. Playtime. Hell, all she did for 'playtime' was read books and browse the internet in search of more books. Ryou loved to read, and that's all she did when she finished homework. Reading was a way of escaping real life, and Ryou had a lot she wanted to get away from.
But, she never made it to her desk. She never got to settle down with her window open and let the breeze waft through the air, she never got to hear the sounds of nature right next to her ear as she flipped through her Math book. She never saw it coming when a hand flew out of nowhere and clapped itself on her mouth, pulling her back and into a warm body. Ryou panicked, her first instinct being to lash out and escape the grip of her captor, but she was also confused, and it halted her attempts at escape.
"Shh, shh." It wasn't her father, it was the voice of someone she didn't know. Someone was in their house, someone was--a robber? Ryou grew scared at the voice, and began to thrash some more. H-her father was right down the hall! She had to make some noise, alert him and let him know someone was in their house. She stomped on the ground, barely realizing it when she stomped right on her captor's foot. He let out a cry of pain and released her, and since she didn't expect the sudden freedom, Ryou toppled forward, crashing into her bookcase where books galore rained down on her. She whirled around to see her captor already upon her and she grew scared again.
He was tall, even from where Ryou was planted on the floor, she could see that. He was dark complexed, having bronzed, sun kissed skin, and abnormal white blonde hair that clashed greatly with his skin. The thing that probably stuck out the most about the man were his piercing lavender eyes that were staring right at her and Ryou quaked, shaking with fear. No, no, no! She had to be strong! She had to alert her father! But, what if the man had a gun? What if his goal was not to steal, but murder them? As the man advanced on her and Ryou shook with fear, wanting to cry at her weakness, she frantically looked behind him, trying to find some form of escape. There had to be a way out! There had to be some--
"Shh." The man spoke again, and she couldn't place the tone in his voice for the life of her. Was he angry? Calm? She couldn't tell. She was so scared, and didn't know what to think, but...she had to tell her dad somehow! "Don't worry, I won't hurt you."
She finally spoke, very proud for her bravery. "W-who are you? What do you want? Are you here to rob us?" Panicking, she was panicking! She couldn't breathe, she couldn't breathe, she was so scared. Die, die, she would die, he would kill her. No, Ryou didn't want to die!
Something that could've been defined as sympathy crossed the man's face, and Ryou was stricken by how those eyes seemed to pierce her very soul, but it didn't maker her any less afraid of this stranger in her house. "No, we are not here to rob you." We? Ryou panicked again. Somebody else was here. "Please, just listen to me. Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you."
He was right in front of her, and Ryou backed away as far as she could go into her bookcase, causing more books to fall forward. She didn't want to be so close to this man. What would he--? Still staring at her, as if watching to make sure she didn't disappear, the man reached into his breast pocket and drew forth a tiny packet with two tiny pills in it. Ryou stared at them, horrified at what they were, and her fears were confirmed when the man took them out and handed them to her. "Swallow these. Don't worry, they will calm you down. I'm not going to kill you."
Ryou shook her head, trying to make it clear that she would NOT take pills from some strange man in her house. He pushed them toward her again and Ryou's arm flew up as a reflex, knocking the man's hand away from her and scattering the pills on the floor. "S-stay away from me!" she screamed, hoping she was loud enough to wake up her dad. If she could go through her bookcase, she would, Ryou was backed up against it as far as her body would allow her.
Without speaking, without his expression changing in the slightest, the man's hand flew out and he wrapped his long fingers around her throat. Ryou gagged, her eyes wide with fear as he choked her. No, she was going to die! He lied, he said he wouldn't--!
Something black was pressed against her temple and Ryou froze, never remembering a time in her life when she had been so terrified. The man didn't look angry, but she could hear the threat in his voice all too clearly as he cocked the gun. "Don't do that again. I didn't want to have to force you, but you leave me no choice." He retrieved the fallen pills, still pressing the barrel to Ryou's head, and she didn't dare move. He--he was going to blow her brains out. God, she was so stupid! She knew he had a gun, but she just had to fight him! Stupid, she was so stupid. Feeling like her heart would thump through her flesh and leap out the window, Ryou sobbed a little from fear when the man returned the pills to her mouth, slapping at her cheek a little to get her to open her mouth. "I promise you, you won't die. Just swallow them." She tried to search his lavender eyes for some reprieve, please, please, just anything so that he wouldn't make her do this. There was nothing there, and Ryou despaired, swallowing the pills, scared out of her mind what they would do to her. She didn't trust this man as far as she could throw him, and her overactive imagination went away with her. Would the pills kill her? Paralyze her? Blind her? Any kind of horrible thing she could think of, Ryou thought of it.
The man took the gun away from her head, something Ryou never had been more relieved about, but as she tried to move, she found that her body betrayed her, and she began to grow limp. The man watched her as she struggled with herself, trying to get her legs to work, but they wouldn't listen. The man nodded, as if expecting this, and suddenly hoisted her up like she weighed nothing and threw her over his shoulder. Ryou was thrown off by the sudden move, and felt like she would throw up from fear when he began to carry her out of her room, down the stairs, out the front door--
God, God, she was being kidnapped! "Please!" She knew it was pathetic, but she couldn't think of anything else to do. And why had her father not heard her through all that commotion and screaming?! Scared, scared, she was scared, she was going to die! "P-please, put me down! I don't know what's g-going on, but if you want money, I'll get it for you, just please put me down!" She couldn't kick, she couldn't fight him, she could only allow the strange man to literally carry her out her front door and to a parked black jeep that idled in their driveway. No, no! Ryou sobbed, the only thing on her body moveable being her head and she used it, shaking it with all her might. "No, no, please! I don't know... Please don't do this!"
The back of the jeep was popped open and Ryou was gentle laid in, but she might as well have been thrown in. Her paralysis was the pill's doing, she knew, and it terrified her not being able to use her limbs like she wanted. She stared back up at the man as he manipulated her limp body parts, moving them so that they wouldn't be in the way when he closed the door again. Ryou tried one last attempt at begging. "Please, don't do this to me! I-I'll get you money, okay? If you want my money, just take it! Please, just let me go!"
There was nothing, no sympathy, no anything from the man when he reached back into his pocket and withdrew a roll of duck tape. Ryou thrashed against her paralysis, knowing it was futile, and screamed when he reached down, taping her mouth shut. He shook his head, still sporting absolutely no expression on his face, and then pulled something black from his pocket again. Ryou moaned into her gag, wanting away, God, she didn't want this! She just wanted to go back inside and finish her homework so she could read her books! What did she ever do to these people? The black cloth was placed over her head and maybe it was the sudden loss of her vision, or the emotional waterfall she was going through, or perhaps it was the pill's doing, but Ryou began to calm down, no less afraid, but calmer.
The door was shut and she could hear the man's footsteps crunching on the gravel as he walked to the passenger side and climbed in. The jeep was already cranked up, so all Ryou felt was the motion as it was backed up and driven away.
The voices of the driver and passenger were garbled speech as they took her away and the pills took full affect as Ryou finally passed out in the back.
