Chapter Two
It was cold and crickets were chirping. Ryou moaned in her sleep, not wanting to open her eyes just yet. Judging from the slight breeze she felt and the croaking and chirping of insects and frogs, she guessed it was nighttime. Weird...she didn't remember falling asleep. It was probably that God-awful boring Math she'd been doing. God, Ryou didn't exactly hate school, nor did she love it either, and she quite enjoyed taking art class and learning a little History, but Math, she could definitely do without. It just didn't click with her. None of those formulas, equations, nothing made sense to her. The most Ryou could do of Math was two plus two equals four. That's all. The end.
She shifted, feeling her muscles cry out as they ached from being used. She must've been sleeping longer than she thought. And being a restless sleeper, tossing and turning being familiar to her, Ryou was quite confused at her body's movement. Or rather, the lack of movement. Groggy, she turned her head and opened her eyes, blinking a few times when...all was still black. What? She blinked again, her next move being to reach up and rub at her eyes. She...she couldn't see. And her hands. She couldn't move her hands. Something tight was wound around them, and then everything came crashing back in an unpleasant heap.
Ryou had been kidnapped. Oh God, oh God, she remembered it so vividly now! That man...that th-that guy had forced her to take pills and then he carried her out to a jeep. Ryou panicked, feeling her heart thump in her ears, and she made a move to sit up, only to find that her body was still quite paralyzed. No, no, no! W-why? What? She couldn't think straight. Who would want to kidnap her? Why would anyone want to kidnap Ryou? She wasn't poor, but she wasn't rich. Was this for ransom?
She swallowed, trying to force her body to calm down. Freaking out and getting scared wouldn't get her anywhere, but Ryou just couldn't help it. She could possibly die, and the thought didn't settle well with her. Ryou didn't want to die. She just started her Junior year in high school! She had so much to look forward to in her life.
Bad dream, this is just a bad dream. No, no matter how hard she tried to deny it, Ryou knew the reality, and it terrified her. This was no dream. She was awake, awake and living in a real horror movie.
Were her captors around? From the noises she could hear, it sounded like she was outside. Was their base of operations at a campsite of some kind? Ryou's mind ran with a thousand questions, but the first thing she needed to figure out was if she was alone or not.
She tried moving her legs and was surprised to find that they were working, and she kicked out to get the feeling back into them, and almost screamed when she hit something solid. She grew even more scared when the object of her kick spoke. The voice wasn't the man from before and she knew this was the other person of whom he spoke. "Oh, I see that you're awake." Why state the obvious? Ryou didn't need to be reminded that she was awake in this nightmare.
Growing still, Ryou choked back on a sob. Die, death, she was going to die. They would...they would kill her for sure. She swallowed to wet her throat, just now realizing her gag from before had been removed, and spoke out, cringing a little when her voice croaked. "I-I-who are you?" It wasn't the first thing that came to mind, but it was the first thing that came out her mouth.
The person chuckled a little and shifted from where they were, and Ryou felt the entire space of where she was lying on move. Where were they? "You don't have to be scared, but I can see that nothing I say will change that. Just know that we aren't out to hurt you. I apologize for Mariku's earlier behavior. He can be a bit of an oaf sometimes."
None of that...answered her question, and she grew a little frustrated from it. She wanted answers, dammit! Growing somewhat bolder, Ryou ignored all the person just spewed out and dared her question again. "Who are you?"
"Ah, ah, don't be so hasty. First, I want to ask you some things and I trust you'll be honest, yes?"
These people had guns, possible other weaponry, and Ryou was completely helpless and at their mercy. Damn right she would be honest. "Y-yes." She just wanted to go home.
"First off, what's your name?"
There was no hesitation, and Ryou was somewhat proud of her strong voice. "Ryou Bakura."
"Ryou..." The person repeated her name, as if tasting it, and she heard them suck in some air, like her name was a drug for them. It made her shiver just listening to them. "Ryou. Bit of a misnomer, wouldn't you say?"
The comment put her off, and Ryou felt the need to defend the name given to her by her parents. How dare this-this whoever piece of lowdown filth who kidnapped her mock her name?! "I-it's my name and I happen to like it." Stupid, she was stupid for back talking, but Ryou didn't care. Her mother gave her that name, dammit, and she would stand up for it.
"No, no, Ryou, don't get upset." A chuckle that sent shivers down Ryou's spine. "I mean, you're not in any position to be getting snippy with me, but I know you're smart, and you know this, so let's just continue." Another shift from the person, and another shift of the entire place. The person paused for a moment, as if having to think of another question, and for awhile, all Ryou could hear were the frogs and crickets. She didn't forget about her captor for a second, though, and was about to speak out, just to make some noise, just so she wouldn't go crazy in the silence, but her kidnapper cut her off before she even began. "I noticed an old man at your house. Was that your dad? He the only one you live with?"
She nodded, not sure if the person could see with that bag over her head. "Y-yes, that's right."
"I see. I thought you lived alone."
For some reason, that last part made her tense. Had this person been stalking her? She never noticed anyone following her or spying on her. It made her extremely nervous to know that this person may have been spying on her from afar, and Ryou never knew anything... "N-no, I live with my dad. H-he's my only relative now." And then an even scarier thought. Was this someone she knew? Or may have known in the past? She had no enemies that she knew of, and the person's voice wasn't the least bit familiar, but what if--?
"Hmm..." Her captor trailed off again, and again Ryou was bombarded with that horrible silence in which only the sounds of nature were her company. "You are in high school now? A Junior, right?"
"Yes."
"Any friends you have?"
"O-of course." These were getting a little choppy, like her captor was running out of things to ask her. Why ask her useless things like this? Why not ask her where her dad worked, or how much money he made? This whole thing was for ransom, right? They'd want to know all about money, right? Ryou voiced her thoughts, shifting her legs a little, just wanting to be reassured she could still move them. "I-I'll get you money if that's what you want. P-please, I'll get--"
"Hush, Ryou, I'm not done asking my questions. Be silent. I was gracious enough to remove your gag, now be grateful for it."
And Ryou obeyed. Really, she couldn't hold her tongue to save her life, and right now, her life was on the line. Even without having to be told explicitly, Ryou knew these people were just like any other criminals on the planet. They would rob her, probably rape her, and then kill her. It was as simple as that. Ryou was smart, she knew. She shook with the fear, the fear of never seeing her father again, none of her friends, of never getting to see her precious books again. M-maybe everything would work out. I-if all they wanted was money, t-then her dad could get it for them. She'd be r-returned home. That's right. S-she could go home. God, she just wanted to see her dad again.
"Good girl. You learn your lessons well. Now--" Her captor was momentarily cut off as something loud banged very close to where they were and Ryou jumped a little, her captor groaning in annoyance at the intrusion. "Dammit, Mariku, I told you we'd be awhile."
Another voice, the one from the man who drugged her. "I know, I know, I just came out here to let you know I got it ready. You can bring her in."
What? What was ready? Ryou's mind flew again with questions and she was frustrated that her kidnapper wouldn't let her ask them, but then her mind drew a blank when she felt strong arms lift her up and hoist her over a shoulder again. She took the movement she had in her legs and used them to their full power, kicking, screaming, flailing and thrashing, trying to get her captor to drop her.
"No, no, no!" The voice of the other reached her ears and the bag over her head was suddenly removed and Ryou came face-to-face with her other kidnapper. A head of white hair and cold brown eyes framed with a pale face met her, but she was more concentrated on the gun that was pointed straight at her face. There was no remorse in this person's face, and despite the long hair and angular features, Ryou had to guess this person was a male, too, just basing that on the baggy clothes he was wearing. She froze at the sight of the gun once again being pointed at her face, and her fighting was halted in an instant. "Now look, Ryou, I don't want to have to use this, but if you keep acting like a horse's ass, then maybe I'll just put a bullet right into that pretty skull of yours. How many times do we have to tell you that we won't hurt you? Calm the fuck down already."
The one called Mariku cleared his throat, tightening his grip around her legs in case she decided to kick again. "I don't think you're being very convincing with that gun. She's scared enough already."
The white-haired man narrowed his eyes at Mariku and flipped the gun expertly with his finger before stuffing it into one of the many pockets on his coat. "Just shut up and take her in. I don't appreciate the sarcasm, Mariku, and I'll scare her as I very well fucking please. I didn't go through all this to have her screaming her ass off and crying all the time."
Mariku shook his head, but said nothing, and Ryou was frozen in his hold as he once again carried her off. This...this was it. She was going to die. Ryou dared to look behind her since she was facing away from where they were taking her and found a very lone, slender white house. Where she had just been scooped up from had been the back of the jeep. So that's why it kept moving around. There were no other house around that Ryou could see and she despaired at the thought of being alone in that place with these two people. Th-they were going to kill her! If they didn't care about money, then that's the only other reason they would have to kidnap her. They were psychotic killers who probably went around targeting random young girls and gutting them in this place. Ryou tried to gulp down her sobs as they walked up the front steps and through that door. What awaited her on the inside? A torture chamber? Would there be limbs and blood hanging around the place? She squeezed the coat Mariku wore in her fingers, fearful tears streaming down her cheeks, but she bit in her sobs, not wanting to anger the white-haired man anymore than he already was. She was scared of death, and also of torture. Torture was worse than death. Would these two rape her? If they were perverts, they would. No, no, Ryou didn't want that! She was a virgin, and took pride in that and she didn't want two creepy guys playing with her innocence!
With so many horrific thoughts of what these two would do to her running through her mind, Ryou was half-aware that they had already entered the house and turned the lights on. The thought of a torture chamber was shot down as the house appeared...normal. From what she could see, anyway. A ceiling fan hung down from the living room area where a TV rested in the corner and several DVDs were scattered everywhere, a table rested in the back behind the couch and was littered with newspaper, and a hallway veered off to the right and possibly led to the bedrooms, but Mariku began up the stairs where Ryou glanced behind her to see a light on in one of the rooms. That had to be the dreaded torture chamber she kept seeing in her mind. Mariku would take her in there and gut her and the other would probably stand there and watch. Or maybe they would both engage and torture her together. A sob escaped and Ryou choked on it, scared and wanting to kick herself for making noise. She didn't want to give these people any reason to be mad at her, and she didn't want to go against their wishes. As long as she did as she was told, maybe they'd let her go.
Mariku heard her squeak and sighed once they'd reached the top of the stairs. "Look, I don't know how many times we have to say it, but you don't have to be scared. The other down there is just in a bad mood. I swear, he doesn't always act like this." His voice was still lacking with emotion, and it somewhat calmed her, though she was still terrified when they entered that room. Again, Ryou's thoughts were shot down when no torture chamber met her, but a...bedroom? She was confused, but it quickly turned to fear when Mariku laid her down on the bed. With pure adrenaline and instinct running through her, Ryou was able to will her body all the way out of its drug-induced state and she hit the headboard, keeping her legs tightly slammed together. No way in hell she would allow this person to do anything to her!
"S-stay away from me." She would've yelled it, screamed it, but her voice failed on her and it came out a breathy whisper. She took a second to look down at her wrists and felt her heart thump in her ears when she saw that they had bound them together.
Mariku sighed and scratched the back of his head, and Ryou jumped at the movement, wanting to be alert and ready to fight for anything. Nothing he did was trustworthy, nothing either of these people did mattered. They were creeps, criminals, and Ryou just didn't want to die. She wanted to see her dad again. Hell, she even wanted to see school again. God, she wanted away from this nightmare. "Look...I don't...hell." He looked away from her, staring at a spot on the floor and shook his head like he didn't know what to say. "I'll let him deal with you. I want no part of this. I did what I was told, so he can handle the rest." Those lavender orbs were back on her, piercing through her, terrifying her all the more, and Ryou sobbed, wishing, just wanting some answers. She was so scared. "Ryou, if anything else, just listen to me when I say this, okay? We didn't bring you here to kill you."
Still sobbing, still shaking from fear, Ryou managed to get out the one question that rang louder than the rest, the one she was dying to know the answer to. "Why did you bring me here, then?" And then they poured out. It didn't matter if he said they wouldn't kill her. The fact was that she couldn't trust these two, so she had to assume anything and everything they said were lies. She would die. "Why did you kidnap me? Where are we? Why am I here? Who are you people? Is this about money? God, I'll get you money, I promise! Just let me go and I'll get you whatever you want. I'll give you everything I have, just God, please, please, let me go!" Begging and pleading were pathetic and weak, but Ryou was too scared to worry about her pride. Better to lose her pride than her life.
Mariku shook his head, and Ryou despaired, wanting answers to her questions. She shouldn't have gone off like that. She should've only asked one, but she was surprised when Mariku looked back at her, his face a mask with no expression readable. "I brought you here because he told me to. I'm not getting in on this. You can hate me all you want, but I was just following orders. You're his problem, not mine. We're at his parents' old house since it's quite literally in the middle of nowhere and he figured no one would bother us here. That's all I can tell you. You can get all the answers you want from him later when he calms down." He moved toward the door, and Ryou was still plastered to the headboard, not daring to look away from him for a second should he try anything. Mariku's hand grasped the door handle, and he looked back at her. "It's late. Try and sleep and don't bother with your window. It's locked, and this door locks from the outside." He turned away, sighing, walking out and closing the door.
Leaving Ryou all alone and scared to death.
