Prologue
One Thousand B.C.
Sixteen-year-old Martalisanne Shadowchild of the Silver Hall rode through the city on her loyal thoroughbred mare, her rainbow-coloured hair flowing behind her as her reddish-bluish-green eyes flashed with glee. Careening to a halt in front of the palace, she dismounted - ignoring the stirrups of the saddle - and used her right index finger to push her star-framed glasses up her nose.
Using a nearby window for a mirror she straightened her short miniskirt and sleeveless T-shirt, (AN: one of those that show off a lot of skin, from the navel down,) then tied her horse, Lightningball, to the railing under the aforementioned window and walked to the palace doors. She smiled and nodded to the guards who let her pass without question or comment, not even when they saw her sword and what it was made of. The sword was a pure stainless steel longsword which hung from its scabbard at her back, and had been bought at the local market for a copper penny.
Marli skipped along happily, heading for the throne room and her boyfriend, Pharaoh Yami. Halfway there she stopped, realising, /He's not there. Today's the day they... They... / and promptly burst into tears and loud wails. The next thing she knew, someone had run her through with a large bronze sword. She died with a smile on her face as she thought, /Now I can join him in the afterlife!/
It was dark and in the middle of the desert when she awoke to find a dark-haired, hawk-nosed man standing over her. The only light came from the electric torch her held.
“Am I dead?” she asked.
“No, you're and immortal.”
