Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Stand My Ground ❯ Prolouge ( Prologue )
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
A/N: Heh, hi, there. This is my first fic on mediaminer. I just have a few things to say before I start:
One: Atemu has not gone back to the afterlife! WOOT! (See, if I owned Yu-Gi-Oh!, then he would never have left.)
Two: IF you have an issue with Sora's name...to bad, you'll live. Besides, it's just a nickname. Her real name is Sorami.
And, finally, three: There shall be footnotes for the junk in here that needs them.
[sigh] Well, that was fun!
DISCLAIMER: I don't own Yu-Gi-Oh!, or the song 'Stand My Ground'.

<<i>I can see>
She stood in the shadows, her crimson-purple eyes observing everything. She saw her Father, the Pharaoh, smiling sadly down at her Mother, the Queen, who was crying. Her Mother whispered something, and kissed her Father on the lips.
<<i>When you stay low nothing happens....>
The girl could feel tears sliding down her own face, for, even though she was but three summers old [1], she was a lot smarter than everyone suspected. She stepped from the shadows after her her parents had broken apart.
<<i>Does it feel right?>
"Abu [2]?" She asked, quietly, but made sure that she was heard. Her Father turned from her Mother, a look of shock evident in the eyes he had passed to his only child. He smiled again, though it wasn't one of those wonderful, light-hearted smiles that the young girl had learned to love. It was made from tears and pain, and laced with sadness.
<<i>Late at night....>
The Pharaoh released his Queen, and walked over to the girl. He kneeled on the floor, so he could be eye level with her, and took both of his hands and placed them on either side of her face, taking his thumbs and wiping away her tears.
<<i>Things I thought I put behind me....>
"Sora..." He whispered her nickname, and Sora couldn't take it anymore. She lunged forward, wrapping her small arms around her Father's neck, and cried into his shoulder.
<<i>Haunt my mind.>
"Please! Please, Abu! Don't go! Don't go fight that scary man! Don't leave me!" She wailed. Her Father hugged her back, knowing that this would be the last time he would see his daughter, but, if he could defeat Akefia [3], then, maybe, he could give her a peaceful future. They stayed like that for a while: Sora crying into her Father's shoulder, and he rubbing circles on her back, in order to soothe her.
<<i>Though this might just be the ending>
He eventually pulled back, and Sora reluctantly let go of her hold on him, and held her hands clenched at her sides. Her eyes were closed as she shook with sobs. The Pharaoh smiled, and brushed away the one spiky blonde bang that hung in front of her face.
<<i>Of the life I held so dear>
"Sora." He said, quietly. When she didn't respond, he became much more serious. "Sorami, look at me." He said, using her full name. Sora reluctantly opened her eyes, and gazed into her Father's.
<<i>But I won't run>
"Sora, I would never leave you or Mommy. I may not be here in body, but I shall be all around you. I will watch over you, I promise." He kissed her lightly on top of her head, and Sora whimpered as her Father picked her up, and walked over to her Mother. He passed Sora to her, and turned around, signaling for the priests to follow him.
<<i>There's no turning back from here!>
Sora's Mother set her down, but Sora buried her face in her Mother's dress, and clung to the fabric like a lifeline. Eventually, Sora decided that she wanted to see her Father one last time, and she peeked a blurred crimson eye from the fabric, and watched her Father strode out the big wooden palace doors. The next thing Sora knew, she was running after her Father, her feet acting on their own.
<<i>Stand my ground! I won't give in!>
By the time she made it out the door, after ignoring the protests of her Mother, her Father was already on his horse, riding away from the desert.
<<i>No more denying! I've got to face it!>
The Pharaoh felt someone watching him, and turned around as his armies raced past him. He could see Sora on the palace steps, her black hair blowing in the wind.
<<i>Won't close my eyes, and hide the truth inside!>
He nodded to her, and whispered:
<<i>If I don't make it>
"Goodbye, my daughter." Sora, who had stopped crying, nodded back, and whispered:
<<i>Someone else will>
"Goodbye, Abu..." And she watched her Father ride off to fight for the last time.
<<i>Stand my ground>

Five-thousand years later, Atemu, (known as Yami to his classmates and friends when they weren't in the company of people who knew about his past as an Ancient Pharaoh), walked down Hikari Street in Domino City, Japan. He seemed distracted, but noone noticed as they bustled around him, not knowing that they were in the presence of royalty.
Atemu was supposed to be in school with his friends, but he hadn't been able to concentrate, so he decided to skip the rest of the day. He had explained to Yugi he wasn't feeling well, (which was a half-truth), through their soul link, and Yugi had agreed to cover for him.
Anyway, the thing that had been bothering Atemu, were the missing peices of his memory. There would be places where there was obviously someone talking, but no face nor voice to go along with it, and, when someone named one of the two people, (there were two people only that this happened with), nothing would come out.
Atemu groaned, and shook his head, speeding up his pace. He tried to push back whatever invisible barrier in his mind that was holding back those memories. Finally, it cracked, only a little, though.
Flashback
"Your majesty! You majesty!" A female servant burst out of the room where Pharaoh Atemu's Queen, Lilea, had gone into labor almost a day ago. The Pharaoh, who hadn't been alowed inside, had refused all of his other duties, and had stayed as close to her as possible, which was outside in the hall.
He imidatly stood up. Was something wrong? Was Lilea okay? What about their baby?
"Yes?" He asked, afraid and excited all at the same time. The servant smiled.
"Her heighness and the Princess are fine." The Pharaoh breathed a sigh of releif. Then he digested the rest of that sentence.
"Prince...ess?" He asked. The servant nodded.
"Yes. It was a baby girl." She said, and motioned for him to follow. He did, and entered the room he hadn't been alowed in before. As the maid went off to fetch the newborn Princess, Atemu rushed towards his wife's side. She smiled weakly as he took her hand in his own.
"Lilea, are you alright?" He asked. Lilea smiled more.
"Yes, I'm fine, but I think our daughter, is going to be stubborn." She said, sitting up as the maid approached. Atemu laughed at the comment, and took the baby, who was concealed by a bundle of blankets, in his arms. He unwrapped her face, and was met with curious crimson-purple eyes looking right back at him. He smiled.
"My Sorami....my 'little one'...." [4]
End Flashback
Atemu fell to his knees on the sidewalk, his eyes wide as he stared at something no one else could see. How could he have possibly forgotten them!? How!? His wife, and his daughter!
"Sora..." He whispered, and all the spaces where his memory was blurred came back into focus. He could remember everything!

Yugi, who had suspected that Atemu had gone to the museum, most likely, had gone the way he knew.
When he was on the corner of Hikari St., he felt that there was something going on with Atemu. He ran through the crowd, searching desperately for Atemu, when he saw him, on his knees, staring straight ahead.
"Pharaoh?" Yugi placed a hand on Atemu's shoulder. Atemu didn't move, or respond.
"My...wife....." He whispered, as tears began to leak out of the corners of his eyes. Yugi stepped back, startled, but still kept his hand on Atemu's shoulder.
"Your wife?" Yugi whispered, but before he could say more, Jonouchi, Honda, and Anzu came running up behind him.
"Yugi-kun! Did you find him?" Anzu asked. Yugi nodded.
"Hai...I...I think...he remembered more about his past." Jonouchi gawked.
"He what!? I thought we got all his memories back!" Jonouchi yelled, and Honda slapped him.
"Shut up, you baka! Someone might hear you!" Honda hissed. Yugi turned his attention back to the Pharaoh. /...Atemu-kun?/
/Hai....?/ Atemu asked, quietly, still partailly lost in his own thoughts.
/You...remember...your wife?/
/...Hai..../
/Should we go see Ishizu-san?/ There was a pause before Atemu answered, and Yugi couldn't tell if he was thinking about if he should go see Ishizu, or if he was still lost in his memories.
/Hai./
