Chapter 1:
Darkness. Slowly five-year-old Yugi Moto made her way through this darkness. Her tri-colored hair of blond bangs, black hair with red tips, bounced back and forth; occasionally blowing in the winter wind. She stumbled on an unbeaten path of Central Park following a voice.
The musical voice called out softly to her, “Yugi….”
Yugi quickly sped up afraid of the dark and desperately wanting someone near. Behind her she heard a twig snap, causing her to began running.
As Yugi was reaching the top of a large rock, she tripped and rolled back down. At the bottom she slowly sat up and looked around fearfully. Again she heard a snapping twig; she curled up in a tight ball and began crying. “Where are you?” Yugi whispered between sobs, “Why can't I find you?”
“I'm right here, child,” the musical voice called near her.
Slowly amethyst eyes looked up to find an astounding sight. There- with a shining glow around her- was a woman in white. The woman you could tell was old from the wrinkles on her face and hands. Her long robe was the whitest white Yugi had ever seen, even her hair- which was tied in a tight bun- was white. But the thing that surprised Yugi the most was the large white wings behind the woman. “Hello Yugi. I see you've made it safely,” the woman said with a warm smile.
“Who- who are you? How do you- how do you know my name? Mommy said I shouldn't talk to strangers,” Yugi said quietly scooting away.
“Hm, you're right you shouldn't talk to strangers,” the woman said to Yugi while kneeling down to Yugi's level. “So, let's not be strangers. My name is Mary and I know you, Yugi, because I'm an angel,” she pointed her pointer finger on Yugi's nose making Yugi do cross-eyed.
Yugi quickly brightened up and began chatting non-stop. “An angel! You mean like the ones mommy told me about! Like the ones I see in church and around Jesus?”
“The one and the same,” Mary said warmly.
Yugi's face than became one of confusion. “Daddy says angels only visit important people. “Why are you visiting me?” Mary then smiled warmly again and said, “Angels not only see important people but also… ordinary people. And I'm here to give you something.”
“To give…me something?” little Yugi asked confused.
Mary nodded. She then held out her left hand and slowly something so bright- that Yugi had to cover her face- appeared.
When the light went down enough for Yugi to see, she saw something spectacular. In the middle of the angels palm was a star shaped crystal; shining brightly, spinning in midair. “This, dear child,” Mary's musical voice cutting through Yugi's thoughts, “is the Star of the Angels. The jewel is very sacred to heaven- to God. It is very important.”
“But why are you giving it to me?” Yugi asked quietly.
“You see Yugi,” Mary said, “because this jewel is so powerful it has a spirit. It chooses who it wishes to have as its guardian.”
“Oh,” Yugi said confused.
Mary laughed lightly before saying, “Don't worry; you'll understand when you're older.”
Yugi, still confused, turned back to the crystal. Tentatively, she shifted her right hand and reached for it. When her hand was only a few inches away the crystal flared up and quickly Yugi snatched her hand away. She looked up to Mary and saw the look of shock but that was quickly by another warm smile. “Don't be scared Yugi. The Star is only excited to meet you.”
Yugi then smiled brightly and again, tentatively, she reached out. This time the Star didn't flare up and Yugi was able to touch it. Once she did touch it the crystal disappeared. “Where did it go?” Yugi asked worriedly.
“The Star,” Mary said putting a finger on Yugi's heart, “is in you, in your soul.” Mary then looked up to the sky then after a moment looked at Yugi warmly sad. “I must leave you Yugi. But-”
“You're leaving me! But I just met you. Can't you stay so we can be friends?” Yugi franticly said tears welling in her eyes.
“I'm sorry Yugi,” Mary said cupping Yugi's face, “but God is calling me back. But I promise you'll never be alone.”
“I won't? You promise?”
“I promise. But now I must go.”
“Wait,” Yugi said quietly taking Mary's hands. “Can you take me home to mommy?”
The angel gave a sad smile before saying, “Yes. Now rest.” Mary laid her palm on Yugi's forehead and suddenly Yugi felt very sleepy.
The last thing Yugi remembered was Mary's warm face smiling down at her before the darkness surrounded her.
******Present time******
Slowly Yugi woke from her dream. `Again? That same dream came again. What does it mean?' she thought as she looked up at her ceiling ignoring the alarm going off.
Sighing, she turned off the alarm clock and got up- with her body protesting the whole way. She looked at her clock and almost went berserk. “Oh snap! I'm going to be late for school,” Yugi said running off to the bathroom.
Half an hour later Yugi was washed up and fully dressed in her school uniform. She grabbed her bag and raced down stairs. At the door she saw her grandpa holding up a breakfast sandwich.
“Thanks Grandpa. You're a life savior,” Yugi said grabbing the sandwich and rushing out the door onto the streets of New York.
“You're welcome,” her grandpa called after her. “Without me you'd probably always late for school.”
“No I wouldn't!” Yugi called turning back, jogging in place.
“Ho, ho, ho, oh yes you would young lady,” her grandpa replied back smiling with his hands behind himself. Yugi stuck her tongue out before turning and yelling, “See you tomorrow, Grandpa.”
“Tomorrow?” he yelled back.
“Yeah,” Yugi called turning back to him. “Remember I'm spending the night at Malik's, with Ryou and Joey.”
“Ho, ho so I did forget. Well, have fun. Now hurry or you're going to miss your bus.”
“Oh yeah, thanks. Bye Grandpa! Love you.”
Yugi then turned and raced off down the sidewalk.
********
Lunch, the epiphany of all the students of St. Mary's Catholic School, and Yugi was no exception. Thinking about her morning, she slid down under a tree with a sigh. She barely missed getting in class on time, then in first block the class was surprised by a pop quiz- which Yugi felt that she barely passed on-, and finally when second block came and the homework was suppose to be turned in, Yugi realized that she had forgot it at home. Luckily, she had a teacher who liked her so she was able to turn it in the next Monday.
“Ugh, I'm exhausted,” Yugi mumbled closing her eyes.
“You too?” a British accent asked.
Yugi opened her eyes to see a white haired girl with doe brown eyes, wearing the same long sleeved white blouse and green plaid skirt with knee high socks and penny loafers, coming her way. “Hey Ryou,” Yugi said as the girl sat down.
“Hey, Yugi. Forgot your lunch?”
“Yeah. Slept in.” Ryou sighed before turning to her lunch box.
“Good thing I was prepared,” she said as she pulled out a container and chop sticks and handed them to Yugi.
“Oh no Ryou! I don't want to take your lunch.”
“Don't worry Yugi,” Ryou said pushing the items into Yugi's hands, “like I said I came prepared.” She then pulled out a sandwich and some chips.
“Well, okay….”
“It's alright, Yugi!” Ryou said with a chuckle
.
“What's alright?” someone asked.
The girls looked up to see a blonde-platinum haired girl with violet eyes wearing the same uniform; hands on her hips.
“Malik! Where have you been?” Yugi asked. Malik sat down and wiped a corner of her mouth.
“No where,” she said innocently.
Yugi looked at her strange- being innocently naïve- and Ryou began coughing with a blush visible on her face. The three teens then heard laughing and all visibly jumped in the air. Yugi turned to see a blonde hair girl. “Joey!” Yugi said standing up hands against her heart. “You scared us.”
“I'm sorry… Yugi… but that was… funny….” Joey said between breaths. Finally she calmed down and began wiping tears from her eyes. “Was it good?” she asked Malik wiping another tear away.
“You know it,” Malik said with a smirk
.
It took a moment before Yugi figured out what they were talking about. She immediately grew red in the face and then yelled, “Malik that's disgusting!”
“What?” Malik said defensively crossing her arms over her chest. “Everyone does it.”
“It's still gross,” Ryou said.
“Well at least she doesn't have sex,” Joey said.
“Good point,” Ryou said putting a finger on her chin.
“It's still gross,” Yugi said pouting.
Joey slung her arm around Yugi and said, “Just ignore it Yug'. It's Malik we're talking about.”
Sighing Yugi said, “You're right.”
“So anyway,” Malik said with a smirk, “ready for my birthday?”
“Well, we would be if you told us where we're going,” Ryou said leaning against the tree.
“Well, I can't tell you yet.” Malik sat down.
“Why not?” Yugi asked.
.
“Because….” Malik said winking.
“This can't be good,” Joey said.
“No, but I want to it to be a surprise,” Malik said smiling evilly.
The other three looked at each other worriedly but before anymore protests the bell rang. Groaning the four got up, “Well see you after school.”
“But Malik,” Yugi said.
“What?”
“I have class with you next period.”
“Ah…. I knew that,” Malik said turning away embarrassed.
Everyone else giggled.
