Chapter 2: Girls will be girls…
"Yami!" Ankara yelled.
Yami opened his eyes a little, seeing a blurry vision of the little girl from yesterday, "Wha-"
He never got to finish his sentence because something struck him across the head.
He held his head and sat upright glaring at the girl with a throbbing head ache, "What the hell was that for?"
Ankara looked at him innocently holding a pan behind her head, "Kure said if you didn't wake up when I called your name to hit with a something, she said a pan would work best." Ankara smiled at him.
Yami rubbed his head where a bruise had formed, "That girl's psycho…" he whispered.
"Come on!" Ankara ordered grabbing his arm and pulling him out of bed, "It's time for breakfast. We're having fresh fruit!" She pulled him out of his room and through several corridors before they reached the dining hall where Seto was already eating by himself looking displeased.
Yami sat next to Seto who was also holding his head and rubbing it, "Don't tell me…"Yami said looking at Seto, "Did she hit with the pan too?"
Seto nodded, "Yep." He cursed silently to himself.
A girl placed a plate of fruit in front of Yami, "Here you go," she said, blushing a taint pinkish color in her cheeks.
"Thank you," Yami said to the girl, "You're…"
"Haiti," the girl answered avoiding eye contact, she kept her green eyes fixed on the floor and shuffled her feet nervously before disappearing into the kitchen from where she came.
"She's a tad shy," A boy said sitting opposite of Yami and Seto, He ruffled his sandy blonde hair with his hand and looked at them, "Haiti isn't used to any other boys besides me. Anyway," the boy extended his hand to Yami, "I'm Demaere."
Yami shook his hand, " I'm Yami and this is Seto. It's nice to know that there are other boys here."
Demaere laughed, "I'm the only other boy here besides you two and Makiah ,but Makiah doesn't really count. Also there's that Jhatu guy that's here with you but besides that, it's just me."
Yami's face darkened, "How many girls are here?"
Demaere scratched his chin, "Most of the priestesses are on their time off, so there's just Saria, Ankara, Lithe, Haiti, Nefiri and Bethany. There's…six priestesses here."
"What about that girl Kure?" Seto asked, "Isn't she a priestess?"
Demaere shook his head, "She's only Saria's best friend. She's a freeloader too, she just stays here to keep Saria company. Kure's quite troublesome though..."
Seto and Yami exchanged glances and nodded in agreement recalling the tree incident.
"Then, why are you here?" Yami inquired taking a bit of an apple that he was holding.
"Because…" Demaere said ruffling his hair again so it got messed up, "Bethany's my mother and Nefiri's my grandmother and my father's dead so I don't really have a place to go and my mother stays here year round so I'm stuck at this temple until I marry or something."
"My sympathy goes out to you," Seto said, "Being surrounded by girls mustn't be very fun."
Demaere shrugged, "I'm used to it," he got up to leave, "I guess I'll see you two around later, bye." He waved slightly then left the room.
Seto looked at Yami, "Well, at least we won't be the only boys."
Yami nodded, "He seems nice."
Ankara reentered the room and sat down next to Yami, "Demaere is very nice to everyone," she explained. She giggled, "Lithe likes him ,but he doesn't like her."
"Lithe's another priestess right?" Yami asked remembering Demaere tell him the names of everyone her.
"Yep," the girl said energetically, "But she's mean and doesn't like Saria. That's why Demaere doesn't like her much."
"That seems like a silly reason not to like someone," Yami said finishing his apple.
"To you it may ,but Saria is Demaere's little sister," Ankara replied grabbing a prune off of Yami's plate and biting it. "Demaere and his sister are really close."
"Yes we are," Saria said entering the room with her own plate of fruit along with Kure. They sat across from Yami and Seto. Ankara climbed over the table and wiggled her way in-between the girls and sat down.
"Nice to see you guys out of the tree," Kure smirked swallowing a grape happily.
Seto glowered, "You wouldn't think it was funny if you were stuck up in that tree until the middle of the night."
Kure still smiled, "That tree is no challenge, in fact, that tree was the easiest to climb out of all the trees. You should be grateful we didn't ask you to climb a different tree." Rajeh came into the room and jumped in Kure's lap and started purring when Kure began scratching her behind the ear with her hand.
"Stupid cat," Seto hissed quietly.
Yami decided to change the subject and turned his attention to Saria, "So you and Demaere are really brother and sister?"
Saria nodded pleasantly taking a small nibble out of a peach, "Can't you see the resemblance? Everyone says that we look so much alike and that we can pass for twins ,but he's two years older and a lot taller than me so I don't understand how people can say we're alike."
"It's mainly your blonde hair and blue eyes that makes people see the resemblance," Yami remarked.
Saria blushed faintly, too little to be noticed, "Don't try flattering me Yami." She glowered at him when she realized he had made her blushed and looked like she was going to pummel him.
Kure and Seto were unintentionally having a glaring contest, neither liked each other much.
"Why don't you get rid of that disease infested hairball?" Seto asked.
"You don't like animals, do you?" Kure responded, "And for your information, Rajeh isn't disease infested…you are."
Seto looked fiercely at her, "I'm not disease ridden, you are more likely then me." He grinned as she remained silent.
"Well at least I'm not the one who got stuck up in a tree all night, you're so pathetic you know that." She folded her arms across her chest.
"Also, boys itch because they have fleas on them," Ankara said, "Because fleas are only attracted to dumb animals." She covered her mouth to suppress her giggles.
Seto frowned at Ankara, "For the last time girl, boys don't have fleas!"
Saria sighed , she leaned her arm on the able and put her chin in her hand, "Seto she's just a little girl, she doesn't know any better."
"I'm not little!" Ankara said jumping to her feet.
Seto rolled his eyes, "Of course you are…"
Ankara threw an apple at his head and stormed off enraged.
"She's so violent," Seto whimpered rubbing his head, now he had two bumps that Ankara had given him today.
Kure raised her eyebrows amused, "Like I said, boys are wimps." She chuckled softly, "Guess I should have told you that's she's six not a midget or anything."
"Girls don't usually have tempers like her until they're going through puberty, so she's not having her period unlike two other girls who are always insulting…," Yami said trailing off when he saw that Kure and Saria were glaring at him.
"Watch it Yami," Kure growled. "Jhatu would hate to find your body parts scattered about this room."
Yami looked like he was going to say 'bring it on' ,but good sense got the better of him when he realized that she was probably capable of doing that so he remained quiet.
The breakfast continued in silence after that and when Yami and Seto were finished they left to go looking for Jhatu who was sitting in a garden staring at the reflecting pool.
"Hey Jhatu," Yami said as he and Seto sat on opposite sides of him, "Can we talk to you about something?"
Jhatu nodded, "Sure, what is troubling you?"
"Well…it's about two of the girls here," Seto said ashamed twiddling his fingers, "They got us stuck up I tree yesterday…"
"Yes, continue," Jhatu said.
"They're also insulting us," Yami told Jhatu, "They don't like us much…"
"So we were wondering…" Seto added thoughtfully, "Can we go back home? These two girls are driving us nuts!"
Jhatu didn't answer immediately ,but when he did he asked, "What are the girls' names?"
"Saria and Kure," Yami replied sheepishly.
"Well they can't be as bad as you say if you can remember their names." Jhatu grinned.
Seto's face fell, "So…is that a no?"
"It is," Jhatu glanced at Seto, "Just because they're being mean doesn't mean that you guys get to go home. The whole reason you're here, is to have social interaction with the other gender, females."
"But they're so mean!" Yami and Seto whined together.
"And this little girl, Ankara," Yami stated furthering their complaints, "She calls us names all the time. I know she's really young ,but no matter how many times we tell her we don't have fleas, she insists tat we do!"
"And Kure has a pet cat," Seto said, "I hate cats. And Kure isn't exactly the greatest girl to socialize with. I've never met a ruder girl in my life and what's she doing here anyway? She's not a junior priestess."
"Like boys will be boys…" Jhatu said softly, ignoring Seto's question about Kure, "Girls will be girls."
"Whatever you say Jhatu," Yami griped. Feeling betrayed, he knew that Jhatu was doing what he thought best ,but still…those two girls were vile to him and his friend.
Seto snorted ,but said nothing.
The two boys got up and walked back into the temple angry at Jhatu and concluding with themselves that they'd stay as far away from the girls as possible while they were here.
