Sweetest Sin
Ame no Mizu
Well, here's something new. In honor of my new website coming in January or February, I am writing a Bakura/Yami. The new site will be called Sic Passim, and will be a Bakura/Yami shrine. It will also double as an information site. If anyone has anything to help with in the form of episode summaries, screenshots, and the like, I urge you to e-mail me at stone_of_chaos@yahoo.co.uk, or Jacklyn Stone at optimiste_obscurite@hotmail.com. Any help will be appreciated! Thankies!
Chapter one:
The Way I Dream of It
*
Can you imagine us making love?
The way it would feel the first time that we touch
Can you think of it the way I dream of it?
I want you to see it like I'm seeing it
It's a picture of perfection
The vision of you and I…

Yami flipped through the television channels, sighing. Nothing was on. It was a humid afternoon, and he was bored. And sweaty. His clothing stuck to him uncomfortably (he'd abandoned the leather for something more summer-friendly, a T-shirt and a pair of shorts). He sighed again, and stood, intent on going to the kitchen for something to eat.
He didn't get there.
Standing in the doorway of the living room was Bakura, his usual smirk plastered on his face. Yami stopped short, his breath quickening.
"What's wrong?" Bakura purred, "Still scared of me?"
"No… of course I'm not…" Yami replied. Bakura barked a laugh, taking a few steps forward. Yami, being stubborn, refused to move. The two spirits were standing face to face, and Bakura's spicy breath blew across Yami's cheek, making his heart stop.
"You should be," Bakura breathed, and somehow, the space between them closed so suddenly…
With a jolt, Yami Yugi awoke, drenched in sweat. His breath was still short and forced. His hands came up to wipe across his forehead while he swung his feet off the bed. It had been the third time that week he'd had that same dream. This was the first time he'd awoken before it had finished, however.
At first, he'd ignored the dreams, but then he began having them more often… now he was having them every night. Why he would have such thoughts about his `enemy'? He wasn't sure. All he knew was that they had to stop.
Yugi had begun to notice that there was something wrong. Yami was losing sleep. He would sometimes nod off in a movie, or at the park, or wherever the gang decided to go. His little hikari even asked about it once or twice. Yami, of course, said nothing. Yugi didn't need to know about these… feelings. He was too innocent.
He shuffled down to the living room, falling on the couch heavily, grabbing the remote. When he turned it on, it was the news, talking about some shooting that had happened miles away from Domino. He sighed, not really watching the show. His thoughts, as they had been lately, were occupied by a certain albino yami. News didn't matter anymore.
"Yami?"
The spirit turned his head to see his sleepy hikari standing at the foot of the stairs, rubbing his eyes. Yami smiled. His light was so cute when he was sleepy.
"Yes, aibou?" he asked.
"I felt you wake up. Is something wrong?" Yugi asked, walking over to sit next to him on the couch.
"No, nothing. You should be in bed, Yugi. It's still very early."
"I know. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You've been waking up early for a while now. Are you having nightmares?"
"No, not nightmares," Yami replied, "I just… can't sleep. It's nothing for you to be worried about, hikari."
"Oh… well, is it okay if I stay here with you? I have no school tomorrow," said Yugi.
"I'd like that."
The settled into the couch, flipping through the early morning television programs. After a while, Yugi fell back to sleep. Yami wasn't surprised; they'd stayed up late last night. Yami smiled and took the light blanket always kept next to the couch, draping it over his hikari. He'd let Yugi sleep.
He slid out from underneath the boy carefully and pulled on his shoes. He needed some air. He walked out silently, hoping he wasn't heard.
Unfortunately, he was.
Yugi watched his yami walk out, hurt. Yami had been extremely secretive lately, and Yugi didn't know why. Weren't they supposed to have a bond? What was so important that he couldn't tell his own hikari?
He jumped up off the couch and pulled his own shoes on, leaving. He looked down both directions of the street, but there was no Yami in sight. Yugi would have to find him. Sighing, he took off down the right side, hoping he would find Yami soon. It was only two in the morning; it wasn't safe to go off alone. He didn't care, though, as long as he got a chance to talk to Yami.
He slowed to a walk after a few moments. No Yami. Chills ran up his spine as he stopped. He had gone in the wrong direction. He turned around to go back, but stopped when he found his way blocked.
"Well, well… what do we have here?" sneered a voice that wasn't familiar to the light, "S'not safe for such a pretty thing to be out so early in the morning…" Yugi shivered and backed up a few steps, only to back into another body. Strong hands grabbed his arms, and he cried out softly.
"I think we should teach him how not safe it is…" purred the person holding him, "Wanna have fun, beautiful?"
"N-no… please… let me go…" Yugi gasped.
"Aww… the poor thing's scared…" laughed the first voice, and the person stepped out into the light from a streetlight in front of him, "Don't worry, babe… if you don't struggle, it won't hurt… much."
Yugi felt tears fall down his cheeks. He was alone. The Puzzle was at home; he always removed it before bed. He had no way of getting in touch with Yami.
The man in front of him stalked closer, and Yugi struggled madly, but in vain. Whoever was holding him had a grip like a vice.
"Get the hell away from him, you assholes," growled a different voice from the shadows, one that Yugi knew all too well.
"Bakura…" he whispered, then yelled, "Bakura! Help!"
The man holding him shook him.
"Shut up, you, or you're dead."
"No, I think you're the one who will die," chirped another voice from behind them.
"Marik?" Yugi gasped. Why were these two helping him?
"We will give you one more chance to let him go," said Bakura. The first man growled.
"Go to hell. We found him first."
"Very well. Marik, you may go to work."
"Goodie," growled Marik. Yugi felt the man holding him ripped away from him violently. There was a scream, then all went silent.
The remaining man looked scared.
"Well, mortal? What will you do to try to save your pathetic life? Run? Scream? Fight back? Or will you simply surrender? I suggest surrender. It makes no difference. We will kill you anyway."
The man gasped, sweat pouring down his face, and he suddenly took off into the darkness.
"Oh, I love it when they run…" Marik growled, and Yugi heard his footsteps resounding in his ears until they died away.
"Are you alright, Yugi?" Bakura asked, stepping into the light.
"Yeah. Thanks," the light gasped, "Aren't you going after him, too?"
"And leave you here alone? No. Besides, I gave up the killing thing. Ryou made me."
"Oh. Thank you, though. If you hadn't shown up…"
"Don't mention it," said Bakura, "What are you doing out here without the Pharaoh anyway?"
"Well, I was looking for him when I ran into those guys."
"C'mon, kid, I gotta get you home," said Bakura, "Marik'll catch up to me sooner or later."
A scream resounded through the silence, and Bakura grinned.
"Yugi, do you know how worried I was about you?"
Yugi stared at his feet silently as Yami paced in front of him, raving.
"What the hell were you thinking?" the spirit yelled, "You could've been hurt! You could've been killed! As a matter of fact, you probably would've been if Bakura hadn't gotten there in time! Do you know how much it would hurt me if anything ever happened to you? You're my life, Yugi! I am your protector! But I can't protect you if you go out in the dead of night with no protection of any kind! I can't protect you if you keep acting like an idiot!"
Yugi gasped and finally looked Yami in the eye, shocked.
"An idiot? Is that what you really think of me as?" he choked, tears coming to his eyes, "Fine. Then I'll stay in the house like a damn hermit so you can go on being this `protector' without having to worry about damaging your reputation."
With this, he threw himself out of the chair and ran up to the second floor.
"Yugi, that's not what I-" Yami started, but stopped when he heard his hikari's door slam shut.
"That was a little harsh," growled Bakura, who had been watching from the kitchen table, "Even for your standards."
"I know. He just doesn't understand…" Yami sighed, taking the seat next to the albino yami, "Thank you for being there, for bringing him home. I don't know what I'd do if I ever lost him…"
"You'd do the same for Ryou," replied Bakura.
"Yes, I suppose I would. How is Ryou, by the way?"
"He's doing okay. He's starting to trust me more, you know? I'm glad he's finally happy, even after all the shit I put him through," Bakura said, "We're doing a lot better now. I've got a job."
"Really?" said Yami, "Doing what?"
"I'm working at this club downtown. I bus tables, do dishes. It's not much, but combined with the money Ryou's father sends from Egypt, it's a nice amount. We're thinking of getting a DVD player."
The two laughed.
"That's good," was all Yami could say. He was suddenly entranced by the being in front of him. Bakura had a handsome smile on his lips, not the sneer he usually wore. It was testimony of exactly how much the albino had changed. A few months ago, no one would dare want to see Bakura smile, but now…
Now he was even more enticing.
"Well, I'd better be going. I've gotta be home before Ryou wakes up, or he'll get worried. I'll see you later, Yami," Bakura got up and flashed him another smile.
All Yami could do was grin stupidly and say, "Yeah, bye…"
Bakura left, and Yami sat staring at the space his body had occupied. After a few moments, he shook his head to clear it and stood. He had to check on Yugi.
He climbed the stairs with heavy feet. He was finally tired. He'd like nothing better than to collapse on his bed and fall to sleep. But he had to straighten things out with Yugi.
He just hoped that was possible.
Next time: Yami is falling deeper in love, but is Yugi getting jealous?
