Tell Tale Dreams
Chapter Two (2)
" Yay! We're here!" exclaimed Jou as the van came to a stop. Everyone filed out excitedly onto the grassy plain. There was a cliff some ways off behind the cabin.
Seto was the last to get out, trying to keep his walk as normal as possible without showing his discomfort. It hurt when his - now half- erection rubbed against his boxers. He had to bite back a moan when Yugi's leg would brush his as the Motou turned to talk to his friends back in the van. The brunette needed serious help, and a good cold shower.
Everyone took their bags and headed inside the spacious wooden house. It was wide with two stories. The door was in the kitchen, and then next was the living room with a fire place and large sofas and love seats. The left had a bathroom and a bedroom; the right led to two other rooms and the stairway up the stairs. On the second floor, there was a hallway with the bathroom at the end of the hall, and two more rooms along the right wall. The left side had a sliding door to the balcony.
Sugoroku put his stuff in the downstairs room to the left by the bathroom. " All right," he said as he stepped out to the teens in the living room. " There are four more rooms, and there are five of you, minus the Spirits. I'm sure you guys can do the math! I'm going to go unpack." The old Motou stepped back out to the van to get all the treats and food they brought along. The others started arguing.
" I call upstairs!"
" So do I!"
" I get a room."
" Me too!"
" Man! I don't want the sofa!!"
Everyone laughed at Jou's statement. " Well, we certainly can't SHARE, can we?" asked Anzu jokingly. Giggles erupted from her at the flushed looks of Jou and Ryou. Seto raised an eyebrow. Was there something he didn't know?
" Oh, by the way," began Bakura lazily at the Kaiba's expression of confusion. " Ryou and this baka are going out."
" AHH! BAKURA!" yelled the Tomb Robber's Hikari. " You weren't supposed to tell him that!" The color of his face could rival a cooked lobster's shell. Jou was wringing his hands nervously at his chest; he shot his head up.
" Hey! I'm not an idiot!"
" I rest my case," said Bakura simply.
Seto stared from Ryou to Jou, the shock splashing over him like the freezing water he needed, wiping out the remnants of his uncomfortable erection. Ryou and that mutt were going out? It didn't matter that they were homosexual. The CEO just had a hard time keeping in his laugh.
" Uh, Kaiba-kun?" said Yugi, looking worried. " Are you okay?" The shocked looks of the others pushed the brunette over the edge, and he let his chuckles fill the silent room. When five pairs of eyes bulged and five jaws dropped, those chuckles turned into laughter. An unseen shiver ripped through Yugi.
" What is so funny?" asked Jou, outraged and red. " D'you got a problem with somethin'?"
Seto shook his head and picked up his things, walking down the hall to the stairs at the right. " Whatever. I'm getting a room upstairs. You can stay with Ryou, puppy. Since Bakura likes being out of his Ring, he can bunk with Yugi. Anzu and I will sleep in the remaining two rooms."
He could feel Yugi blush and Bakura fume with embarrassment as he left. Seto smirked. He knew everyone was PERFECTLY comfortable with the arrangements. The CEO just hoped he made the right decision by putting them together.
~~
After everyone unpacked, lunch time came by and Sugoroku was already cooking in the kitchen. There were sandwiches, chips and dips, cookies, and drinks on the table. The teens took a Styrofoam plate and put what they wanted on it, and sat wherever they wanted to eat. Seto placed himself on a brown love seat at the end of the living room. He had two tuna sandwiches, potato chips and two chocolate chip cookies. At his feet was a bottle of water. He studied his food for a moment and thanked himself for coming.
The CEO looked up to see Jou and Ryou at the foot of a couch, sharing a plate. Envy shot up his spine. Seto wished he could do that. With whom, he was afraid to admit. Yugi, Bakura, and Anzu sat at the coffee table and laughed at some dirty joke the Tomb Robber had said. Seto chuckled himself. Who would have thought that that Spirit had a sense of humor?
' Must have picked it up for Yugi,' the CEO absent-mindedly said. Yes, he had a feeling that he liked Yugi. How? Well, it all started in the van. Even though the brunette didn't STUDY Bakura's actions, Seto saw enough to draw the conclusion that Bakura had some interest. Whether it was personal or for… lust, he had no idea, and he hoped it wasn't the latter.
" Hey, Yugi," said Anzu as she bit into her oatmeal cookie. " Where's Yami? He hasn't been out all day." That caught the CEO's attention. He saw Yugi glance at him before replying.
" He's just waiting for the grand finale, is all," replied the Motou boy. " Yami hasn't been feeling well."
' Liar,' hissed Seto inwardly as those wide 'innocent' eyes looked at his plate. ' What are you hiding, Yami? … Why am I curious?' Seto scoffed at himself and drank water. There was no air conditioning in this place, but it wasn't hot, and Seto's brain wasn't frying from the heat. He had no excuse for that stupid question.
" Oh, that's too bad, buddy," said Jou; a piece of bread stook out of his mouth. Ryou giggled and nudged it in. Anzu 'aww-ed', Bakura rolled his eyes, Yugi blushed and Seto looked sharply away. It hurt too much to see such a happy, open couple. Could Ya- ?
' What is wrong with you?' the brunette berated himself. ' You were about to say 'Yami'. Why? Are you in LOVE with him?'
' Get away from me,' replied Seto angrily. So he had some, okay A LOT of erotic dreams about Yami. But even that gave him no reason to mention the Pharaoh every time he thought about something intimate. Seto just mixed it up with lust; yes, his body craved for Yami, that was it. So if it was, could Seto give it the Pharaoh, and get rid of all the torture? Was Seto even WILLING?
Could Seto seduce Yami for a meaningless quickie and toss him away?
" Ryou!" thundered Bakura. The yami was standing and glaring at his Hikari. Every thing was silent before the Spirit roared, almost for no reason. Seto was startled, but Ryou must have said something in their 'link' that caused Bakura to color and look furious. The others appeared amused like they were used to outbursts like that.
" Whad he say this time, Bakura?" asked Jou, trying not to laugh. " You're boilin'."
Bakura turned his angry eyes to the blonde. " He said I should try to se-" The Tomb Robber's hands flew to his mouth, his dark eyes wide with panic. Ryou laughed and shook his head.
" I know you like the idea, naughty Bakura," said Ryou un-Ryou-like. " I see the way you loo-"
" That's enough!" Bakura pounced on his Hikari and held his mouth. Jou 'oh-ed' as though he knew what was going on. Yugi and Anzu merely raised their eyebrows.
" What's up, you guys?" asked Yugi curiously. " You're all acting awfully strange."
Anzu nodded. " Yeah. Bakura, what were you going to say?"
" Nothing!" he replied sharply, trying to muffle the sounds from Ryou's mouth. " It's nothing. Just- go ahead and eat- nothing happened."
Seto watched as Yugi and the girl shrugged and talked about a movie they recently saw. His azure eyes narrowed as they studied the blonde and two snowy hair teens. That was the second time that the Tomb Robber's temper almost made something slip. What WAS it?
~~
" Let's go outside!" Yugi was leaping all around the cabin, yelling the same thing over and over again like a little boy. It was four o'clock and pretty cool out. Seto was reading on the sofa, Anzu was dueling with Jou, and Ryou and Bakura were talking to each other; one of them made a burst of laughter ( Ryou) or anger (Bakura) every now and then. Grandpa was taking a nap on the patio.
" Come on, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?" whined Yugi, pacing around the living room. Jou just placed a monster card faced down, Ryou just giggled, and Seto just turned the page, all of them acting like Yugi didn't even exist. The small teen pouted and flopped on a love seat, his eyes tearing up.
Anzu saw this and sighed in defeat, putting her hand of cards faced down. " Oh, Yugi…" she complained. " Can we finish this first?"
Yugi looked up at her. " Can you finish it outside?" His amethyst eyes were watery and shiny; his brows were furrowed in a cute, pleading way. Anzu and Jou saw around it though, and the girl placed a magic card on the field. Yugi dropped to the floor and began sniffling.
" Come on, Yugi, they're just kidding," said Ryou suddenly, a bright light in his eyes. He winked at the tri haired boy and spoke out in a loud, sweet voice. " Jou, can we go outside? I want to-"
" Sure!" replied the blonde, putting his cards away.
" Hey!" exclaimed Anzu. " Ryou!"
" Sorry Anzu," said Jou, standing. " I'm gonna split."
Ryou stood, took the other boy's hand, and they both walked out; Yugi squealed and darted out passed them. Bakura sighed and stood as well. He looked back at Seto, still reading.
" Are you coming?" he asked, not really caring, just wondering. Seto bent a side of his book to see the Spirit.
" I suppose I could," the CEO replied in the same tone of voice. They both walked out after the three running and yelling teens. Anzu had gone out after them and quickly joined the immature boys playing a simple version of freeze tag.
" So, are you bunking with Yugi?" asked Seto in amusement. Bakura chuckled beside him.
" Ryou talked him into it," replied the Tomb Robber in his same demeanor. He glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. " How did you know about this, Kaiba? Does that little weasel Hikari of mine have anything to do with it?"
" No. The blame is on you, Tomb Robber."
" Hn." Bakura stopped and the CEO turned to him. Those dark eyes held some serious thought within their depths, and the brunette tilted his head curiously.
" Bakura," Seto began.
" There's something you should know," said Bakura. " But I have to show you..."
~~
The sun was beginning to go down. Sugoroku was still taking his light nap as the teens prepared the food and gifts in the kitchen and living room. As Yugi took off the apron that said 'Kiss the Cook', there was a bright glow. When it cleared, there was an older, taller, version of himself beside him.
" Oh, Yami!" squealed Anzu and hugged him. She was preparing the candles on the marble cake before she embraced the Pharaoh. Yami was taken aback and pressed against the counter. He hesitantly patted her on the back before she pulled away.
" Are you well now? What was wrong? Is there anything I can do?" she asked, putting her hand on his forehead. Yami sweat dropped.
Seto was arranging the gifts with Bakura when they saw the flash and heard the girl's delighted voice. The CEO felt a wave of jealousy just as the Tomb Robber looked at him.
" She likes him a lot," the Spirit said plainly, bending down to fix Yugi's gift on top of Seto's. " Yami isn't that big of a fan of her, though. You would be surprised to know how he really feels."
Seto shrugged as though he didn't care, but his mind was reeling with anger and relief. " Why not?" he asked in a monotone, not revealing his curiosity. Bakura looked at his work and placed a hand on his hip.
" He likes someone else." The Tomb Robber left before he could see Seto's reaction.
The food was prepared by the time it was six. Yugi woke up his grandfather and they filled their plates. To keep the birthday man out of the prepared living room, they all convinced the older man to eat out under the stars on a blanket. He thought it was a great idea.
Yugi was an excellent cook, Seto admitted as he bit into a piece of crab sushi. The Motou made three types of sushi, chicken teriyaki, and tempura, with some help from Ryou, of course. Jou just cooked the rice.
They sat at the back of the cabin over by the cliff, watching the remaining orange glows of the sun disappear behind the water. There was just enough light to eat under, and they all talked about the good times, even when those who weren't there couldn't say much. Yami and Bakura didn't eat, of course, and Seto sat in silence as he listened intently to embarrassing stories of Yugi's childhood.
The CEO had done his best to ignore the Pharaoh until now. When Seto first saw him out of the Puzzle that evening, he just politely inclined his head. Yami responded, but that was it. The brunette began to ponder about the question earlier: would he seduce Yami just to get what he wanted?
It was driving him insane already to be around the Spirit. Sure, he was a little upset that Yami was cooped up in that damned triangle. However, it was a lot worse when Yami could be seen and touched. Anzu… oh, Anzu; if she valued her life, she would stay a safe distance away from Yami, like, fifty feet?
" Kaiba-kun, are you all right?"
Seto blinked and slightly shook his head. He looked up and saw that the attention of everyone was on him. Yugi's question still hung in the air, and Seto weakly smiled.
" I'm fine," he replied and ate another piece of sushi. The others looked unconvinced, but said nothing.
" I remember when Yug had a crush on that Sashaki girl," said Jou suddenly, laughing when Yugi immediately turned beet red. " That was at freshman year, but Yugi was going gaga over her."
" Jou!" cried Yugi. " That's embarrassing!"
Jou chuckled. " I know. You would space out whenever you saw her."
Seto risked a glance at the Tomb Robber, who looked like he wanted to strangle someone whether it be Jou or Sashaki. The CEO smiled and shook his head.
" So!" countered Yugi. " I remember when you had a crush on Byun Kari!" He giggled like mad and Jou almost pounced on him. Ryou looked on.
" Kari?" the accented teen repeated, incredulous. " You mean the co-captain of the cheer leading squad? When was this?" Jou flushed and Yugi sat up straight.
" That was a little after school started this year," replied Yugi. " I wouldn't worry much, Ryou," he added cheerfully. Everyone sweat dropped.
" What about you, Yami?" asked Anzu, turning so sweet as she spoke to the Pharaoh. " Have you ever had a crush on anyone?" Seto rolled his eyes. She was obviously flirting with him.
Yami had his legs stretched out as he leaned on his elbows behind him. He glance up at the stars and held his gaze there for a while. Those crimson eyes grew hazy.
" I mean, you do have your memories back, right?" asked the girl, secretly hoping that the Pharaoh would say it was her in their past lives. She was his Spell Caster, after all.
Yami didn't reply as his attention was still upwards. Everyone looked at him more thoughtfully as he stayed in that position for a while, probably reminiscing or trying to rack his brains for an answer. Yugi silently ' oh-ed' and continued to eat a bit sullenly. Bakura turned away from the Pharaoh, pain fleeting over his face for a brief moment.
Seto was curious, and he wondered if the silence meant that Yami was hurt in the past. Perhaps he had to leave his loved one when he was sealed in the Puzzle, or maybe he fell in love with a commoner and their love was forbidden. Perhaps she died of an illness. These thoughts made Seto feel pity towards his arch rival. Sure, he was hurt to know that someone was already there in his heart. It was just that… who was the lucky one? Was it someone in their group? Was it Anzu? The idea made his chest ache.
" Yami?" questioned Ryou, tilting his head. He glanced at Bakura in uncertainty, who shook his head and inwardly spoke to him. Ryou gasped, finally understanding, and looked away. Jou already knew, for he was the first to notice things, and he was Yugi's closest friend, so of course he would know.
Sugoroku cleared his throat. " What's with all the silence?" he joked. " It was only a question." Anzu pouted but said nothing. Maybe Yami wanted to tell her somewhere more private first before telling everyone else.
" Kaiba-kun," began Yugi. " did you ever like anyone?" All except Yami's attention zeroed in on Seto, and he unconsciously flushed at the attention.
" N-no," he replied, gazing down at his now empty plate. " Not that I know of."
" Uh, huh," agreed Jou sarcastically. " And I'm the King of England." Ryou nudged him.
" Cut it out, Jou," he whispered. The blonde shrugged.
" Ah, whatever. I still say he's gotta have liked SOME one."
Seto remained silent. He DOES like someone. He's probably in LOVE with someone. Admitting it was the hard part.
~~
It was late by the time Sugoroku opened his gifts. They already dug into the cake with the numerous candles on it. Most of the gifts were Egyptian items or artifacts and a watch. The old man gave everyone a hug, crying, and retired to his room. The teens were happy and still wired from the chocolate in the cake. It would be a long night.
" Yami," said Anzu, crossing her legs as she sat on the love seat. Yami was laying on half the couch with his legs over the armrest, and his head in Yugi's lap. Bakura sat beside Ryou in front of the fireplace, and Jou and sat at the foot of Yami's side of the sofa. Seto reclined on the other love seat across from Anzu's, reading his book in the light from the fire place.
" You still never answered my question," said the girl. The Pharaoh opened his eyes and looked up at the ceiling.
" There's really nothing to tell, Anzu," he replied. " I - never mind."
Anzu was at the edge of her seat, looking anxious. " You can tell us, you know," she persisted. " This person is worthy of your love, and of our friendship. Is she someone we know?"
Seto raised an eyebrow and looked at Yami. Yugi was looking down at him, as though speaking with him. The CEO felt sorry for the Pharaoh who was always being pestered by Anzu, and decided to bail him out. Besides, the brunette didn't want to know whom Yami loved. It was just… too much…
He put his book on the coffee table. " I'm going outside," he stated and stood. Everyone looked at him as though he was mad. " Anyone care to join me?" The room remained silent except for the crackling of the fire, and he shrugged, not really caring. " All right." The CEO walked to the back of the room, intending on leaving through the back.
" Wait! I want to go too," said Yugi. Yami lifted his upper half so the Hikari could get free and catch up to the tall brunette. " You can't go out by yourself." He grinned widely. Seto had a weak smile and opened the door for the smaller one.
" Thanks, I guess," said the CEO as Yugi stepped out. He looked back at the crowd. Bakura was glaring, Jou and Ryou were suddenly whispering, and Anzu was looking dreamily at Yami who was propped up on his elbows, looking out the door as though speaking to his other half. Seto rolled his eyes as the Tomb Robber looked like he wanted to kick the tall brunette and himself.
" Whatever," he stated, somewhat fed up that the Spirit didn't do anything about Yugi. Seto closed the door behind him and walked out to the grass where Yugi was already laying. He sat silently beside him and looked ahead over the horizon to the dark waves that could be distinguished against the lighter shaded sky. Stars sparkled as they sat there, both inwardly linking the diamonds to create figures in the atmosphere.
It was silent for a while before Yugi spoke up. " Kaiba-kun, why did you want to come outside?" he asked curiously, putting his hands behind his head. His wide eyes were still glued above.
The brunette shrugged and picked at the grass. " Fresh air," he replied nonchalantly, twirling a green - almost black- blade around his index finger. " Why did you join me?"
Yugi blinked and looked up into azure eyes. " As I said, you can't come out here alone. Besides, I like the sky at night. In the city, you really can't go star gazing." Those orbs flickered back to the sky, searching for the Big Dipper.
Seto looked ahead and saw the moon peer out from behind the clouds. It was at a crescent, the edges pointing to the left. It shone and created a circle around itself as though it's rays forced clouds around it to create a ring. He suddenly thought about the whole ' who did you like' questions back in the cottage. Yami did have his memories back now, right? His curiosity got the best of him.
" Yugi," he began a little uncertainly.
" Yes?" replied the boy, laying on his stomach and playing with the grass. Those amethyst eyes occasionally glanced up at him. " What's wrong?"
Seto shook his head, implying 'nothing', and trying to clear it. " I just have a question. Your Yami doesn't talk about his past life; why not?" There- but then he added: " Not that I really care."
Yugi frowned at the last sentence. " He doesn't like dwelling in the past. It's so different from now. He… can't live in a time that was already past. It's gone now, and he's letting it go." There was a sad gaze on the grass between Yugi's fingers, and it was Seto's turn to frown.
" Hn. I guess I don't understand," he stated truthfully, deciding to let the subject go. The smaller teen seemed to have other plans.
" We are all drawn in a circle," said the Motou, as though he couldn't contain himself any longer. " Believe it or not, but we were all actually someone else in Yami's time. Jou was a Healer; Ryou was a Mage; Anzu was a Spell Caster. I was… a slave. Pegasus was some power hungry Nobleman." He looked up into confused and surprised blue eyes. " And you, Yami said you were his High Priest."
Seto averted his gaze and looked instead at his outstretched legs. There was a bind that drew them together - some power beyond them all that made sure that it stayed that way, that they would find each other again.
" Bakura, of course, was the Tomb Robber. Malik and Marik were… Yami didn't want to tell me that." Yugi looked uncomfortable. " Mai was a Bandit." He shifted onto his back and sat up, sitting Indian style and brushing some stray dirt off his pants. " Everyone knew who they were five millennia ago." He turned to Seto, ashamed and apologetic. " Um, surprise?" Seto wasn't paying much attention to the other. He was just wondering about how they could be in such close terms with each other yet seem to distant. Was he meant to stumble upon the Turtle Game Shop and this whole 'rival' ordeal with Yugi Motou and his Puzzle? How did it feel for Yami to have known someone one way, and then wake up thousands of years later to find them another way?
" Kaiba-kun, are you all right? I'm sorry, I shouldn't have burdened you -"
" It's all right, Yugi," cut in the CEO, flashing him a simple smile. Yugi seemed to brighten at it though, the light of it rivaling that of the moon's on this dark night. Seto was curious, though, and he dared to ask questions about himself back then. A High Priest, huh? Would he get his memories back too? " Will I remember?" he asked blandly as though he didn't care. Yugi's brows furrowed thoughtfully.
He was silent for a while. ' Probably conferring with his yami,' thought Seto. For some odd reason, he became jealous at their intimate relationship. They were close, sure, but he didn't accuse them of being lovers. Seto was just upset at the fact that Yugi could get into Yami's heart while he had to stay outside.
The small teen slowly met Seto's gaze. " Maybe…" he finally replied. " I mean… Jou's been getting flashbacks, so has Ryou. Malik got his a while back. Anzu claims to have some of her own. I have had - several."
The brunette nodded, a thought suddenly coming to his mind. Did his dreams of Yami have anything to do with having some of his OWN flashbacks? Dreams were something that your subconscious contained. Perhaps it was coming back to him in that form. But he was supposed to be the Pharaoh's High Priest. What else could he…? His eyes turned urgent.
" Yugi, is there anything else I should know?" he asked. " Could Yami tell me more?"
Yugi looked uncertain, as though debating on an answer he should give the CEO.
