Tell Tale Dreams
Chapter Four (4)
The car ride was silent. Seto sat at his same seat: front row, beside the window. Bakura sat to his right, looking pissed as Anzu sat on his other side. Jou and Ryou took the back with Yami as Yugi took up the front with Sugoroku. The CEO could feel eyes burning into him from behind. He tried to relax and get lost in the conversation of the others, but that gaze made itself known to him, and he couldn't ignore it.
" You're quiet, Kaiba," said Jou suddenly. " You all right over there?" Seto nodded and 'hn-ed'
" Yes, I'm fine," he muttered and leaned his head against the window. There was a slight 'thud'.
" Let's sing a song," blurted Anzu as it suddenly got silent. The radio wasn't on as they decided to talk instead.
" How about… not?"
" Shaddap, Jou," drawled the girl in feigned annoyance. " Okay, let me rephrase the question: How about I sing a song?"
" Ugh…"
" Jou!" A playful argument broke out. Bakura's eyebrows twitched as Ryou joined the bickering and made it even worse. Yugi turned on his seat the front and played along too, laughing and sweat dropping at the retorts of the others. Yami was thoughtfully silent and Seto closed his eyes, concentrating on the hum of the vehicle.
" Kaiba?"
" Hm, Bakura?"
" … Hold me back if I jump out of my seat."
" … Sure thing."
~~
Eventually, Yugi decided to turn on the radio. The hit song ' Beautiful,' by Christina Aguilera came on ( A/D/R::: MAJOR DISCLAIMER, not mine.). Anzu began to sing along with the voice in the speakers, and it was surprisingly sweet. All went silent except for her singing and the radio.
" I think she's pretty," said Yugi suddenly. " Christina's not bad. This song really turned her around."
Seto tensed as he felt Bakura heat up and practically glow in green with envy. He didn't think he would want to be the one to hold the Tomb Robber back if he wished to hurt anyone - which he prayed not. The CEO sat up and tried to involve himself in some type of conversation, or change the subject. Who knows what the Spirit of the Ring was capable of in anger… never mind. But then again… Oh man, he would be digging his grave now.
" Yugi, if you could, would you date her?" he asked out of the blue. Everyone excluding Sugoroku and Bakura looked startled. Even Yami was brought out of his reverie.
Yugi flushed. " I… don't know. I mean, she's pretty, but, I like some one else." There was a pause, and then Yugi covered his mouth. He wasn't supposed to mention that, Seto guessed.
Bakura took Seto's bait and came out of his shell. " Who might this person be, Yugi?" he asked, his voice sounding akin to what it was back at Duelist Kingdom. " Do tell."
Yugi shook his head frantically, reddening under Bakura's gaze. " I- I really can't say. I mean… I want to-"
" Hey, Yug," said Jou, sitting at the edge of his seat. " We won't tell. Who is she? Someone we know? Is she cute? What's her name?" Anzu turned back and hit him on the arm.
" Jou! You're so nosy!" she accused and turned back to a very shy and red Yugi. " Who is it, Yugi?" Jou doubled over in his seat.
" Just someone," replied the small boy. " it's someone you know, but not very well, I guess." Seto saw Yugi's wide eyes flicker up to Bakura, and back to his hands wringing nervously at his lap.
Anzu understood. " Oh, okay. Well, I guess you don't have to tell us." Her tone was disappointed, but she was really tricking Yugi so that he would eventually feel guilty and spill. Moments passed and that didn't seem possible.
" Maybe later, though," said Yugi at last.
" Hey, what's wrong, Ryou?" asked Jou. His lover had his gaze to the back of the seat before them. His eyes were glazed over, and anyone who knew him had an idea of what was going on. " Oh, never mind." Ryou was having a mental connection with his darker half.
Seto wondered if there were any past relations between Bakura, the Tomb Robber, and Yugi, the slave. How did they meet? How were they separated? Did Yami and Yugi know each other back then? There were so many questions, and the CEO found himself wishing that he had his memories back. But was that all?
Did he also want them back so that he could further understand his and Pharaoh Yami's past relationship?
~~
" Thank you for inviting me," he said as they got out of the van and unloaded. He had just called his limousine over to pick him up; it was five in the afternoon. Mokuba should be home by now. " I had a great time."
" Thank you for coming," said Sugoroku. " The more the merrier."
Yugi smiled kindly and nodded. " Yea, we thank you also, Kaiba-kun. We really thought you weren't going to join us."
Well, they weren't the only ones that would have been sore if he didn't come along. Seto would beat himself up if he did otherwise.
" Right then," he said. " I'll see you guys later." His ebony limo pulled up outside, and the CEO made his way to the door, already pushing it open. He was reluctant to leave. He wasn't able to get to know everyone as well as he would have liked. He wasn't able to get to know YAMI as well as he would have liked. But would the Spirit want the same thing?
The brunette walked to the open door of his ride, but a hand on his elbow stopped him. He turned to meet Bakura.
" I don't believe I understood what you were trying to do, Holy man," he said, smirking knowingly. " What are you up to?" Seto raised a curious eyebrow.
"You mean about you and Yugi?" he asked. Bakura shrugged.
" And the latter," the Spirit of the Ring added, clearly implying something. Those dark orbs studied him for a while. " It hurts him, you know." The brunette blinked, confused.
" I- I don't understand…" he whispered. The other let his hold on him go.
" I don't expect you to. Just thought you should know." Bakura turned to make his leave. Seto could only look after him, wondering what laid beyond his words.
~~
Seto was at a Ceremony in an extravagant temple. There were gold and jewels and inscriptions on the walls; expensive materials in bright colors hung from them, each strand of the material illuminated by the sunlight that shone through the hole in the roof, and the other, various, but limited, windows. The brunette was dressed in heavy, white and navy blue attire; a hat stood tall on his head and a bright staff was at his hand.
He was standing in the rays of light in the center of the room. More modestly dressed Priests surrounded him, and an elderly one stood before him, mumbling incantations. To the man's right was the Pharaoh Yuugi Ou. Warmth and energy flowed in his blood as the old man's words became louder, and the voices of his surrounding Priests were known, muttering the same words. Seto felt as though he was transforming into someone new; it was like he was being summoned into a new life.
~
Seto opened his eyes groggily. He was on a plush bed of dark sheets with pale decorations on them. He was still in his same apparel, and he sat up, suddenly feeling revitalized, as though power coursed through his veins. His azure eyes scanned the large room of a desk and books and statues of Egyptian gods. Torches were lit around the area. There were portraits and idols where there was enough place to set them. The brunette looked out to his balcony. As the curtains blew in, he saw that it was night time.
The door to his left opened and closed, and Seto found himself looking at Pharaoh Yami. He was dressed in a white robe with gold and scarlet trimmings. A cape wrapped around his chest and biceps and cascaded down his back, barely touching the floor. Seto looked curiously at the glorious circlet around the other's forehead, and saw the Eye of Ra there.
" You have been asleep for the whole day," said Yuugi Ou in his deep and professional voice. " Would you like anything?" Seto shook his head, but the action was dizzying. He groaned and brought a hand to his temple.
" You should eat." The Pharaoh approached him and stood at the foot of his bed. " But first, I would like to welcome you, my High priest Seth."
Seto looked up at Yuugi Ou, who looked down at him impassively. ' I was sworn into my position this morning,' he reasoned inwardly. This must be the first time that he and Yami had ever met.
" You are younger than I expected, however, I am sure you will carry out your duties." The other studied Seto, and he saw an emotion flicker in their depths. " I will send a servant for you." The Pharaoh left, leaving Seto empty.
~~
" The Pharaoh calls for you, High Priest."
Seto barely looked up from his old scroll before him as he sat at his desk. " Where is he?"
" In his chambers," came the curt reply. Seto nodded.
" I will be there." Rolling up his scroll and placing it neatly in a drawer, Seto stood and fixed his robes. His hat sat at the corner of his desk, and since he doubted that Yuugi Ou wanted him to perform a Ceremony of any sort, he just left it there as he exited his room.
" My lord?" he asked as he entered. He knocked politely before and received no answer. He opened one side of the double doors and peeked in. Yuugi Ou was no where to be found, but Seto let himself in anyway.
The room was almost like a miniature house in itself. Dead ahead was a large, four poster bed with red drapes. There were scrolls and paintings and other treasures on tables along the walls. Hieroglyphics and pictures decorated the walls and ceiling. The brunette carefully inspected everything, unconsciously memorizing his surroundings. Torches and candles lit the area, casting it into a warm, yet mysterious setting.
" I'm on the balcony, Seth," called that confident and powerful voice. Seto followed it to his left, walking passed the curtains there and exiting out into the late evening. He stood several paces behind his Pharaoh at the right. The other seemed to be lost in his thoughts.
" You have called, and I am here," said Seto formally. " Is there anything you wish of me?" Inside, he felt his heart skip beats at his words. He desired his King, but there was resentment in there too. He loved and hated his King. Why? That was complicated. For all his life, Seto trained to be the best. And every time the Pharaoh personally told him to do something... it hit a nerve.
He heard Yuugi Ou chuckle. " Do not be so formal, Seth. I am beginning to think you do not enjoy my company outside of the temple." Seto missed the sincerity interlaced with the sarcasm.
" Then perhaps you are not far from the truth," said Seto, teasing his Pharaoh, yet somehow meaning his words. However, when the King spun around, it was evident that he had taken it the wrong way. Yuugi Ou held a sad gleam in his crimson eyes that made the High priest frown. " My Pharaoh?"
Those orbs seemed to plead with him. " The gods punish me, Seth. I know naught of what to do anymore." It was oddly satisfying yet depressing to see weakness in those usually dark eyes. Whatever it was, Yuugi Ou was deeply affected by it. Seto could feel the confidence and determination - the foundations of his Pharaoh- crumble.
" What makes you come to this conclusion?" Seto asked, serious. Did he have a dream of a plague? A civil war? The betrayal of his country? The gods were always pleased with this young King, and Seto knew that they would never place a curse of him.
Yuugi Ou shook his head. He looked desperate, as though he was pleading with himself to just let it go. His Pharaoh was losing it, and it scared the High Priest despite his desire to see his liege weak. Yuugi Ou was the heart and strength of Egypt. There was no way he could crumble.
" I must tell you something, Seth. But I am afraid of what might happen if I do." He took slow and cautious steps towards the other. " I am your Pharaoh, and you are my High priest; yet, we do not know much about each other. You only refer to me as ' Pharaoh' or 'Yuugi Ou'. Do you even know my real name?"
Seto blinked. " Does it matter?" he asked tentatively. " I did not think that more was required." He was so stoic sometimes. Another part of him felt ashamed that he could not say his Pharaoh's birth name. Those ruby eyes gazed up at him as the other stopped only a step away.
They studied him for a while, searching for whatever they were searching for. Seto stood impassively, letting the King do as he wished. After a while, those crimson orbs hardened and seemed to hold self loathing and sadness. Yuugi ou turned away and walked back to the rail of his balcony.
" I apologize, Seth. You may return to your chambers." That voice turned back into it's professional tone, making Seto snap out of whatever he was thinking and bow curtly before leaving. As he left, he knew that the Pharaoh wanted to say something more, and for the umpteenth time in the past six months, Seto had wondered what Yuugi Ou's birth name was.
~~
That Monday at school, Seto kept spacing out. The ringing of his cell phone always crashed him back to reality, reminding him of responsibilities, and that he couldn't just dwell on the past forever. Lunch time came around, and he took his packed lunch up to the roof. He never liked the cafeteria food; sometimes it was unhealthy.
He sat against the door that led back down the stairs case, away from the sun. The CEO hoped no one would just barge up here and topple him over. He scooted more to the left were he would be against the stone instead of the metal of the door. That should save him a little.
Biting into his red apple, he gazed out the fence at the edge, walking back into oblivion again. It was so different when you had information about your past life. You begin to wonder if it could be the same as now. You wonder if you could change back into the person you were. It was long ago, yet by just one little thing of familiarity, those ancient feelings are transferred to this time. Seto knew that Yami was the cause of this change. Who else could get under his skin?
' I'm losing it,' he thought to himself. ' I wonder if the Pharaoh goes through the same things.' Perhaps he did; perhaps he didn't. The only way the brunette would really know was if he asked the Spirit himself.
~~
About Seto's plan earlier, to just get into Yami's pants, was that something that he really wanted to go through? He did have morals, but he also felt that what his dreams were trying to tell him was more than lust. That afternoon, in Study Hall, he had a clearer vision.
Months more had past since Seto had arrived at his Pharaoh's chambers that night. For a while, Yuugi Ou seemed more distant with him, and colder to others. The Shadow Realm dangers were getting to him, and all feared that he would crack.
Seto studied these changes, and it hurt him to see his King in such a state. Perhaps if he could just talk to him, if not comfort the way he wanted to, than Yuugi Ou would feel better again. The Pharaoh needed a shoulder to lean on, not advisers or wise men to tell him HOW to interpret whatever the King was experiencing.
The curiosity of Yuugi Ou's birth name got to him again, and he dared to ask the King's past nanny, Aliza. She was a sweet old woman now who still watched after her Pharaoh. The High Priest approached her one morning.
" Aliza," he said in his stoic voice as always. The old woman seemed to see past that, and smiled as she approached him.
" Yes, Highest Priest," she replied. " Is there anything you desire of me?"
Seto cleared his throat; he was actually going to find out. " The Pharaoh; his birth name was never clear to me. I was wondering if you could tell me." Aliza's eyes warmed impossibly so, and she nodded.
" His parents named him, Yami, my High Priest. Yami."
Odd, yet surprisingly fitting.
~
Seto entered the Pharaoh's chamber exactly four months since he was last summoned there. It was trouble to enter the King's rooms without his consent, but the High Priest knew that Yuugi Ou would not mind, or so he at least hoped.
As expected, the young ruler was on his balcony, looking out at Egypt during the night. Seto figured that this was what the other liked to do. He stood silently by the arched exit before he cleared his throat. Yuugi Ou did not say anything.
" Something ails you, my Pharaoh," said Seto slowly, cautiously. " Do you care to talk about it?"
There was silence for his reply. Seto tried again.
" Do you want to show me?"
The Pharaoh tensely shifted, seemingly trying to will him away, afraid to use his voice to do so. The High Priest stepped closer once.
" Would you like me to leave then?" He felt the cold of the night air and the coldness that this King was radiating, and it angered and discouraged him. Here, Seto offered a helping hand, and the Pharaoh only glared at it, giving him a silent dismissal. The brunette's voice was icy as he spoke further.
" Fine. Whatever, Yami no Yuugi Ou." He sharply turned and stormed through the large room, oblivious to the shocked and then angered expression of his King.
" Stop!" called Yami, now in his room and watching as his High priest neared the door. " Stop. Now."
Seto was too far gone in the protection of his dignity and hurt pride that he spun around, glaring at his King. His respect was gone. " WHAT, Pharaoh?" he spat. This was kind of like treason, wasn't it? The thought didn't even cross his mind.
" You had no right or permission to call me that," growled Yuugi ou, his eyes flaring. That was all Seto saw, and he did not even consider what could have fueled it; they were the ingredients of self loathing, resentment, and grief piled in a huge, powdery clump that exploded as it touched a spark. " Where did you learn my name?" demanded Yami.
" It does not matter," said Seto, protecting Aliza in case Yami was truly upset about this revelation of his name. " It will not be used again; I assure you that. I apologize for intruding. This was a mistake."
Yami froze momentarily, affected by those words. His eyes were startled and coming back to earth, while Seto's icy blue ones still held their gaze of coldness and anger. Silence passed between them before the High priest eventually scoffed and turned to exit the large doors.
" Don't you dare turn your back on me, Seth," called Yami, authority evident in his voice. Seto turned around and raised an eyebrow at the suddenly calm exterior of his Pharaoh. " My birth name, why did you seek to find it?"
Seto shrugged casually. " Curious, I suppose. You couldn't be born with the name of ' Yuugi Ou', now could you?" he wasn't jesting. He was too angry for that. Yami's eyes lowered.
" I see. You may leave then…" He turned away.
Growling, Seto rushed back. A startled King was swung around and grabbed by his shoulders. " What is wrong with you?" asked Seto, furious at the mood changes. Whenever he saw the Pharaoh grieving, he longed to comfort him; if the Pharaoh was cold, he longed to yell at him and make him understand; if the King was angry, Seto longed to punch him and then kiss the wound he would create. He cared about Yami so much… so much. Even as he hated and loathed the one above him, he still served him as he could. Seto loved him so much he hated him; he saw him as a thorn at his side, distracting him and making him go literally insane. Yet, he was also a motivation to be better...
Shock gave way to frustration. " You wouldn't understand, Seth. Now please, remove your hands," said Yami, clearly keeping his control in check. Seto released him and turned, but snapped back around to punch him in the jaw. Yami stumbled back and his knees were forced to bend from his bed behind him. He fell on the lush sheets, holding his jaw and glaring with such ferocity.
" I'll give you five seconds to explain why you did what you have just done," growled Yami, speaking around the pain. Seto stepped closer and, completely lost now, kissed Yami's fingers at his face. The Pharaoh gasped in shock, and his hand fell away. The brunette gently brushed against the reddening skin. As Yami didn't do anything, a tongue flickered out to lap at the sore jaw, kissing the soft skin.
Yami was frozen as Seto continued his ministrations. The brunette made his way to his lips, where he planted a soft and tender peck. The High Priest parted and blushed slightly.
" I apologize, Pharaoh," he said, mentally kicking and beating himself up. " I was… I…" Hell, not even HE knew what he just did.
Yami sat there startled with an innocent expression of confusion on his face. Seto wanted to stay; he even wanted to CONTINUE, but Yuugi Ou would be disgusted with that. He only waited concubines, or other FEMALES of royalty.
" I… I'll see my way out." He turned to leave.
" Seth," called Yami softly. " Why did you do that?" The High Priest looked back at Yami. Oh, might as fucking well.
His azure eyes locked with ruby. " I wanted to."
" THIS IS THE SECOND TIME, MISTER KAIBA!"
Seto jumped five feet off his chair. Sensei Alano glared at him. " I hope you can explain yourself, Kaiba-kun," she growled. Just as Seto opened his mouth to make up an excuse, the bell rang and the students darted out.
Seto went to his locker and put his head against the cool metal. In his flashback, that was the first time he had ever kissed Yami… or kissed ANYONE for that matter. The brunette groaned. Yami no Yuugi Ou was his first kiss…
