Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ The Devil's Trill ❯ The Devil's Trill ( One-Shot )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Disclaimer: This is SOMEWHAT like the Devil’s Trill arc of Yami no Matsuei... not EXACTLY word for word like it... but I got the idea from it.

I no own YuGiOu... so hah!

Names (for those of you who follow the English dub... Japanese names go from last name to first):

Japanese ---------- English
Bakura Ryou - Bakura
Otogi Ryuuji - Duke Devlin
Hiroto Honda - Tristan Taylor
Jounouchi - Joey Wheeler
Anzu - Tea

I think that?s all you need to know! The rest of the names are the same.... or are not being used in this fic ^^ (Yes... Yuugi is still Yuugi)

I call Yami Bakura... Bakura and Bakura Ryou... Ryou! Just clarifying so none of you gets lost ^^;

This takes place sometime after Yuugi and Duke duel (which is AFTER Duelist Kingdom), just so Duke is a character in the story, yeah? XD. This is sorta AU-ish (not really), saying that Ryou never got a hold of the Millennium/Sennen Ring. So there for, he has no yami. It’ll all work you... You’ll see ^^ Oh and Yami and Yuugi are two separate beings.

I realize that a lot of the things happening in this fic may be out of character. Please don’t mind it x_x Sorry!

Pairings: JounouchixRyou, YamixYugi, and HondaxOtogi. Those of you who don’t like yaoi pairings... please read it because it’s only shounen-ai and not too big of it... no lemons and such...... not even limes. Boo hoo.

Also... in this fic, Ryou plays the violin. o_o

The Devil’s Trill
by Fat Cat Buyo
A YuGiOu One shot

-------------------

Bakura Ryou walked home from school, happily carrying his violin. When he arrived at home, he took off his jacket and scarf and pulled out his peculiar looking sheet music.

-For the school’s Winter Recital, the teacher specifically asked Ryou, alone, to play a piece. Searching through all the sheet music he could find, it was near hopeless. Nothing was advanced enough to impress his teacher. That was until one group of sheets, with a blood red cover, attracted the silver haired boy’s attention. “The Devil’s Trill” was printed in neat, cursive style font, on the cover. Ryou picked it up and paid for it, not even looking inside. Something told him that this was “the one”. Sort of like the music chose him. When he got home, he saw the notes were too advanced. Sighing, he turned in for the night.-

Ryou paused before picking up his violin. Flashes of last night’s dream came to him.

--Dream Sequence--

Ryou sat there, looking at his violin. “It won’t play itself.” He told himself, reaching to pick it up. The violin started to float there for a second, before someone appeared, holding it. He looked like Ryou, only his eyes were different, and his hair was wilder. He began to play a fast paced song; one of the most beautiful things Ryou had ever heard. His bow moved across the strings as he continued to play. Ryou was in awe; he sat there and watched in silence, unable to make a move. When the man was done, he looked up to Ryou and started to disappear. “What is it like to meet the devil?” He asked, smirking.

--End Dream--

That was when Ryou woke up. His brow was covered in sweat. He opened his window, took a cold shower (and almost froze himself) and headed off for school.

Now, he sat there, holding his violin and looking at the sheet music. He played the first three notes and realized that it sounded like the song from his dream. Without looking at the music, Ryou sped up and began playing at a higher level than he had ever played before.

He could feel his arms keep on moving as he slowly seeped into darkness...

-------------------

Ryou awoke in his bed... soaked in blood. He looked at the clock. 2:00 AM

He saw a flash of white dash out his window. Ryou was fully awake now, and scared. He had played the song and something had possessed him. “Was it that Devil guy?” He asked, himself as he stepped into the shower.

The cold water washed away the nasty, warm feeling that the blood gave him. Looking down and seeing the red liquid washing down the drain made him want to puke. After he dressed and dried his thick hair, Ryou turned in for the night, yet again.

In the morning, Ryou dressed in his school uniform, pulling a scarf and jacket over it, to keep him warm because of the snowy winter. The downpour of snow the previous week had covered the ground in the glittering, white substance and, for some odd reason, the cold yet beautiful weather made Ryou happy.

At school, Ryou found Yuugi, Honda, Yami, Jounouchi and Anzu all gathered around Otogi, who was reading a newspaper clipping, aloud. Ryou ran over and gave Jounouchi a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“The top violinist, Otoshi Hideo, was murdered last night. Investigators found that he was murdered by someone’s hand, since no mere weapon could have done such a thing. They think it might have been someone with long nails.” Otogi stared wide eyed at the clipping. Noticing Ryou, he smiled and waved. Ryou waved back and before he could notice his mistake, Otogi grabbed his hand and examined his nails, closely.

“Hey... Ryou, you violinist, you... with unnaturally long nails...” Otogi started. Honda placed a hand on Otogi’s shoulder and pulled him back, slightly.

Yuugi stepped in between Ryou and Otogi. “Hey! Don’t go accusing Ry-chan of murder!” He scowled.

Otogi sighed, “Sorry Yuugi... demo, his nails....”

“I don’t care! Ryou didn’t do it!” Yuugi’s frown deepened and Jounouchi put his arms around Ryou. Otogi and Honda headed off.

‘I’m gonna keep a close eye on Ryou....’ Otogi thought to himself, leaning against Honda, who in turn, put his arm around the boy.

“Do you really think Ry did it?” Honda asked. Otogi shrugged.

“Who knows...” he whispered.

-------------------

It was, again, after school. Ryou sat there, watching his violin cautiously, as if it would come alive and eat him.

“This must just be my imagination!” Ryou assured himself. “Like bloody heck the Devil possessed my violin...” He laughed at the strange pun and picked up his beloved violin. “Three more days until the recital. I have to get ready.” He looked at the strange sheet music and the new music he had purchased on his way home.

“The Devil’s Trill is just too hard for me to play.” Ryou shook his head. “It’s a pity because that song was so beautiful.” He shrugged and started to play the new song.

On his third time playing it, Ryou was beginning to memorize the new song, even though it was rather complicated. When he turned the stand around to review the sheet music, the song was gone. In it’s place was The Devil’s Trill.....

Unable to stop himself, Ryou began to play the cursed song. Before his eyes appeared a symbol. It was a circle, with a triangle in the middle. The eye of Horus stood, glittering, in the center of the triangle. Four rings dangled from the circle.

‘It’s one of the Sennen items!’ Ryou thought to himself as he continued to play. Like in a trance, he stood up and his pace began to quicken. At the end of the song, a while dog appeared. It’s five red eyes glistened in the moonlight. Unable to move or scream, Ryou stood there, watching the white dog intently.

Snarling, the dog bounded towards him, entering his body. Ryou fell backwards.

He could feel himself dust off his pants and head towards his own bedroom. He watched as he undressed and redressed himself in something he would never wear.

“Who are you?!” Ryou strained to ask as he sat in his own soul room.

“Just call me Bakura...” The man, “Bakura," said to the mirror, flashing a devilish grin.

“You’re the man from my dream! And Bakura is my surname!” Ryou gasped, watching Bakura put the strange necklace around his neck. He looked just like Ryou, only his hair and eyes were wilder.

“Yes, I know that. And this, my little friend, is the Sennen ring.” He revealed the “necklace” to be the Sennen item Ryou saw earlier. Bakura lifted the violin and closed the sheet music, flipping it over.

On the back of the sheet music was the design for the Sennen ring, outlined in gold. Bakura flipped over the violin to reveal the same design, etched into the smooth wood. “You’re under my control now, Ryou.” Bakura leaped out the window of the three story apartment building and landed on his feet and hands, like some kind of large, evil cat.

The town was illuminated with street lights, as night owls prowled the area. Bakura walked a few feet away from the window, leaving tracks on the snowy ground. A girl dressed in a revealing outfit walked over to Bakura,

“Hey there... “ She purred, winking. Bakura growled and stuck his hand through the girl’s stomach.

This was Domino at night. The peaceful little town wasn’t so “peaceful” now....

Ryou could feel the demonic man, probing his mind... searching for something. “Ah... so your lover, Jounouchi, I think we should pay him a visit. But maybe we visit Yuugi and Yami first.” Bakura smirked.

“NO! Don’t hurt my friends!” Ryou pleaded, but Bakura was already headed towards Yuugi’s house. A swift couple of knocks on the door and Yuugi’s grandfather answered.

“Is Yuugi in?” Bakura asked in his malicious tone.

“No, I’m sorry, he’s not here.” His grandfather answered happily.

“Where is he?” Bakura growled.

“That’s none of your business, young man.” The grandfather crossed his arms. Bakura smirked and before the old man could do anything, Bakura had scratched his arms and had his hands around his neck. Yuugi’s Grandfather let out a muffled “Help me Yuugi!” before passing out.

Hearing police sirens, the white dog, now known as “Bakura", exited Ryou’s body, disappearing in the darkness. Ryou panicked and ran for his apartment, running up the stairs, entering his room and locking the door behind him. He sighed heavily, leaning against the cold door. His body was limp and he slid until he was a pile of limbs on his floor. Tears welled up in his eyes. He looked at his blood soaked clothes and started to cry.

-------------------

Ryou silently walked towards the destination Yuugi had told him to go to. He opened the door to the hospital room.

“The one who attacked me... I remember.... he was albino!” Yuugi’s grandfather exclaimed, waving his arms around like a senile old man. A flash image of Bakura’s red eyes appeared in Ryou’s mind. He shook his head, the flowers in his hand moving a bit, giving away his presence. Everyone looked at him and everyone but Otogi waved and smiled.

Otogi growled and stormed over to Ryou. “I knew it was you being those murders and crazy happenings! The long nails,” He picked up Ryou’s hand and showed it to everyone. “The albinoness!” He grabbed a fistful of Ryou’s hair and then dropped it, turning to the crowd. “They called me crazy! I’m not crazy! You’re all crazy!” He pointed an accusing finger to his friends and then to Ryou. There was a hint of foam on his mouth as he lunged out the door, calling, “I’ll show you all! One day... ONE DAY!”

Honda blinked and got up.”I think I’ll go talk to him....” Honda bolted out the door. “Wait! Otogi! I have your medication!” Silence. “Otogi?” They could hear a chomping sound and a girly shriek could be heard down the hall.

“Thank Ra that we are in a hospital.” Yuugi’s Grandpa shook his head, while Yuugi locked the door. “Yuugi-boy! Where’s Anzu?”

Jounouchi spoke up from the corner of the room. “We kicked her out of the group. One: She’s a girl. Two: She’s straight.” Jounouchi smirked.

“Is she single?”

Jou blinked. “Yes...”

Yuugi’s grandpa pouted. “Aw... let an old man have some fun!” Jou slid over to Ryou and hid behind him. Ryou smiled and laughed for the first time in a couple of days.

Later that night, Bakura put down his violin and smirked, jumping out the window.

-------------------

Otogi sat at his computer, watching yaoi. He had a notebook on his lap and was rapidly coping down notes and sketching things. “Hm... Honda-kun and I can try this...” He whispered thoughtfully to himself.

He heard a rustling of leaves outside his window. He turned around to see someone perched on his window sill.

“Who are you?” Was all the dice master managed to say.

“Your worst nightmare.” The man smirked. They locked eyes. Green and red. Otogi’s breath caught up in his throat.

“Y..you...”

“Yes, Otogi. I’m the ‘one’.” Another demonic smirked played across his lips. “You think cute, innocent, playful little Ryou would ever kill anyone? Psh. Well, you know too much. I have to silence you... forever...” Otogi’s eyes went wide as the man approached him. Otogi backed up against the wall and started to whimper. All he could think about were Honda’s warm embraces and how he could never feel them again. He sat there for a couple seconds, waiting for his death. Nothing happened.

Opening his eyes, he spotted the man on the floor, his palms to his eyes. “Help me... Otogi-kun....” He whimpered.

‘Ryou’s voice!’ Otogi dropped down on his knees next to Ryou.

“Help me.. he’s trying to....” Ryou gasped for breath. Otogi sat there and watched the younger man. Ryou began to claw at his bandaged arm, his eyes shifting from brown to red. When blood started to seep through the bandages a blur of white bolted out Otogi’s window. Ryou collapsed.

“Ryou!” Otogi picked up his unconscious friend and set him on the guest bed. He grabbed the first-aid kit and started to rebandaged Ryou’s arm.

“He’s trying to kill me...” Ryou mumbled.

“Who’s he?”

“Bakura...” Otogi gave Ryou a glass of water. “Tomorrow... lock my violin away and don’t give it to me until the recital.” Otogi nodded as Ryou fell into a deep sleep.

Otogi left the room, not noticing the glowing set of five red eyes outside the window.

The next morning, Otogi headed out for Ryou’s apartment. When he opened the door, he found the violin on a chair, as if waiting to be played. He felt a strong urge to pick it up and start playing, but remembering the story Ryou told him that morning, he resisted the urge.

Placing the violin in the case, he put a lock on the case and pocketed the key. He grabbed the sheet music that Ryou had told him to get, and walked out the door, violin and music in hand.

-------------------

Ryou felt relieved having told someone about what happened, even if it was Otogi, whom Ryou wasn’t very close with.

Currently, he found himself at the local library using the internet. He put “The Devil’s Trill AND Tartini” into the search box and clicked on the first site that appeared.

The original title is 'Le Trille du Diable', it's a sonata which was composed for violin & piano in B flat in the year of 1730. This sonata by Tartini was called by his school, the 'Devil's Trill', on account of a dream in which the Master said he saw the Devil at the foot of his bed, executing the trill written in the final movement of the sonata.

Ryou took note of that and skimmed through until he found any relevant pieces of information.

One of Tartini's most noted works is the sonata called 'Il Trillo del Diavolo' (The Devil's Trill), which was not published till his death, and with which a well-known and curious anecdote is connected. Dr.Burney, who visited Padua a few months after Tartini's death, tell it thus quaintly, translating it from the 'Voyage d'un Francais' of Lalande, who had it from Tartini's own lips :

"He dreamed one night, in 1713, that he had made a compact with the Devil, who promised to be at his service on all occasions; and during this vision everything succeeded according to his mind. In short, he imagined he gave the Devil his violin, in order to discover what kind of a musician he was; when to his great astonishment, he heard him play a solo so singularly beautiful and executed with such superior taste and precision, that it surpassed all he has ever heard of conceived in his life.

So great was his surprise and so exquisite his delight upon this occasion that it deprived him of the power of breathing. He awoke with the violence of his sensation, and instantly seized his fiddle in hopes of expressing what he had just heard, but in vain ; he, however, then composed a piece, which is perhaps the best of all his works (he called it the 'Devil's Sonata'), but it was so inferior to what his sleep had produced that he declared he should have broken his instrument and abandoned music forever, if he could have subsisted by any other means."

Some say, that the Devil’s Trill was the song that killed him. They say, that the day before he died, he saw red eyes and heard the song being played in the background before he collapsed. No one is really sure if this information is true or not.

Ryou stared at the screen. For awhile, he sat there, before printing the information out and dashing out the door.

-------------------

Ryou waited impatiently backstage of the school’s concert hall. Otogi bounded backstage and held out the lock-less violin case and Ryou’s music.

“Good luck...” He nodded.

“Did you tell Jou, Yuugi and Honda?” Ryou asked. He nodded again.

“You don’t have to go through with this, Ry-chan.” Yuugi said, stepping out of the shadows. Yami stood beside him.

“There might be another around this, Ryou.” Yami spoke up. “Like to...”

“...challenge Bakura to a shadow game.” Ryou interrupted, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. “No... it’s fine Yuugi. I can do this.”

“Well, you have the support from all of us.” Jounouchi spoke up from behind Ryou. He hugged Ryou around the waist and smiled. “We’ll be in the crowd, silently cheerin’ ya on.” Ryou smiled one of his bright smiles and looked down to his violin.

Sakuya-sensei, the orchestra teacher, ran back stage. His shaggy black hair was pulled back into a small ponytail and he wore his best “suit”. “Ryou! The Recital is starting! Get back there!” Ryou gave Jounouchi a quick kiss on the cheek and ran out to the stage. The curtain was down and everyone was turning their violins, violas, cellos, bass cellos and what not. Ryou sat down in his seat and took out his music. When Sakuya-sensei got at the conductor’s stand and motioned for them to be silent, the curtain rose. Ryou looked out around the crowd.

Jounouchi was sitting next to his still blind sister, Shizuka. Yuugi and Yami were sitting to the left of him, hand in hand. Otogi was fiddling with his thumbs as he sat next to Honda. Ryou even spotted Kaiba Seto, wearing his normal frown and glare, and his little brother Mokuba, in the crowd. Ryou smiled at the support that his friends were giving him (minus Seto) and felt some of the weight on his heart lift a bit. ‘As long as my friends are here, I can never fail...’ Ryou thought.

Soon, the recital began and they started with a slow symphony. Then a fast paced one and another slow one. Before he knew it, Ryou was beckoned to the front of the stage. There was a music stand waiting for him, a spot light shone on it. But in the light, it looked evil and malevolent. Ryou placed the music on the stand and raised his violin up to his chin, ready to play.

“Bakura Ryou is one of our top violinists here at Domino High. I’ve asked him to play a solo for this year’s Winter Recital. Here he is with The Devil’s Trill by Giuseppe Tartini.” Sakuya-sensei announced, smiling brightly. He bowed to the audience and left the rest up to Ryou.

Ryou pulled his bow back and forth, his fingers dashing wildly across the top strings. Everyone looked at him with admiration. ‘Here it comes.’ Ryou thought. He felt the song coming to an end as the trills came more often and the beat became faster. He could feel himself loosing control of his body. Slowly, he fought the battle with the evil inside of him.

People looked in wonder at the boy who’s hair seemed to change slightly. His eyes were closed so they could not see his eyes changing colour as well.

In his mind, Ryou was fighting for his life. Bakura had a tight grip on his neck. “Just give me your body.”

“NO!” Ryou choked.

“Give it to me... and I’ll let you keep your soul.”

“NEVER! I’ll NEVER LET YOU HURT MY FRIENDS!!”

Ryou finished the song with a final trill and then there was a sudden gust of wind, as something exploded. A white aura omitted from Ryou and burst out of the room at a high speed. The sheet must for The Devil’s Trill burst into flames. The Devil’s Trill was no more. The concert hall was silent. Ryou stepped up to the microphone.

“That was a demonstration of Tartini’s final battle with the Devil. The ending of his life as he fought to keep the Devil from taking away his body and his soul because their pact had been fulfilled..” Ryou lied, smiling. He brushed the hair from his face and looked at the audience and the concert hall. Music sheets were everywhere and almost everyone’s hair was standing on end from the blast. Slowly, people started clapping until the whole hall erupted in applause. Ryou beamed and bowed.

After the concert, there were snacks served for the orchestra. Sakuya-sensei was congratulating Ryou on his spectacular solo, when Yuugi, Yami, Otogi, Honda, and Jounouchi walked in.

“That was awesome, Ry-chan!” Yuugi bounced. Jounouchi gave him a hug.

“Congrads.” Honda smiled.

“Well... what’s gonna happen now?” Otogi asked.

“I don’t know.” Ryou answered, looking around, seeing all of his friends. “But at least it’s over.”
