Chapter Five: Memories of the past

In the following week, Sharlene hung out with the group lots. Some times, she went to the games shops with Joey and Yugi to trade cards, sometimes; she asked Tristan to teach her how to drive a motor bike. But, most of the time, Sharlene and Tèa were going through the boutique clothing shops choosing dresses and tuxes for the prom.

This was a Saturday, exactly one week till the prom, Sharlene and Tèa went to the other city to see Serenity. Sharlene liked Serenity; she was charming and enthusiastic like Tèa, but she was much milder than Tèa. Serenity, on the other hand, thought that Sharlene was like a big sister and little sister, sometimes, she could be so mature and thoughtful, but sometimes, she was so childlike and sloppy. Serenity was sure to go to the prom with Tristan, and she was happy to see her brother again too.

"Can't wait till next Saturday!" Said Serenity. They were in a coffee shop, resting.

Serenity had been showing them around the city.

"I know." Said Tèa. Sharlene smiled mildly.

"So, Sharlene who are you going with?" Serenity asked.

"Well, nobody yet." Sharlene replied.

"Why don't you go with my brother?" Serenity suggested.

Hearing that, Sharlene smiled. "Oh, he's got a date."

"Oh, who is she?"

"That's a secret, Sharlene and him ha been kept it from us!" Tèa added.

"Sharlene just tell me, I won't say anything to the others!" Tèa begged again.

"You really want to know?" Sharlene asked.

"Yeah."

"Ok, ok, I will tell you…Just wait and see!" Sharlene tricked her, and then Sharlene laughed.

"Oi, Sharlene, that's not funny!"

"Well, I never said it was."

"Hahahaha…" They all laughed at the end.

Three girls sure had a very pleasant day.

Sharlene was all exhausted when she reached her front door. She hadn't touched the door handle, it opened already. Sharlene saw a familiar smile.

"Oh, my god! Is it really you? I can't believe my eyes…oh my god…" Sharlene screamed and jumped onto the guy who opened that door. With a big smile on his face, he hugged her back.

"Wahh, when did you get here? How come you haven't contacted us for so long? I thought you disappeared from this world! Sharlene let go of him and punched his right arm. And then she stared at him from head to toe. His long black hair had been cut shorter, but his fringe was still long enough to cover parts of his eyes. His beautiful blue eyes, they are as pure as the sky, as wild as the ocean. His nose had the perfect lines, and the most seducing part of his face was no other than his lips. He was in black, it made him look slimmer and taller. And there was something different about him that Sharlene couldn't really figure out.

"Well, well…" said Sharlene, still staring at him.

"Long times, no see, Sharlene, how are you?" His hand slightly touched Sharlene's face and then he put it back in his pocket, his eyes had the softest sights on her.

"Tired, Thirsty, Stressed…" Sharlene held out her fingers and counting.

"Go sit on the sofa, your apple juice coming right up." The guy said softly.

"Ok, Nicolas, whatever you say!" Sharlene threw herself on the sofa, and closed her eyes.

Swiftly, Sharlene felt so light, she felt as if she was floating in the air. Sharlene looked down and saw the unfinished pyramids.

`Where am I? Am I in Egypt again?' Sharlene was puzzled, she rubbed her eyes and looked again, yes, and everything was real. She turned around and she was on the ground again, she was on a street, people passing around her like she didn't exist.

Sharlene looked around, everything looked so ancient and…familiar to her, everything. Sharlene sighed and then she was in the air again. She looked down and saw a huge beautiful garden, there were people guarding around it too. There was a big water fountain in the centre; close to it, there were three kids about seven or eight years of age, they were all dressed up in white. The boys seemed arguing over something, and the girl was sitting on the lawn and looking up at them.

Sharlene was curious, she floated towards them to see what was going on, but something stopped her at a distance from the kids, she tried to go through it, but she was bounced back. In the end Sharlene gave in and stay where she was. She couldn't see their faces, but, she could hear the boys' quarrel clearly.

"It's my turn to be the Pharaoh, today! You were…" Said the spike haired boy.

"No, my turn!" The taller boy snapped.

"But, you were the Pharaoh yesterday, remember?" The spike haired boy said unwearyingly.

"Oh, well, yesterday didn't count!" The taller boy said loudly.

"Why didn't it count?" The little girl looked up at him and asked, she had a sweet voice.

"Well, that's because I didn't marry my queen, you left early with your brother remember?" The taller boy looked at her and said in a soft sweet voice. The little girl giggled.

"A Pharaoh doesn't need a queen, I won't need one!" The spike haired boy was angry.

The girl suddenly stood up and ran away from them.

"Look what you've done! You made her angry! It's your entire fault!" The taller boy accused.

The spike haired boy said nothing but ran after her.

"Hey, wait for me!" The taller boy tried to catch up with them.

"Early loves, that spike haired boy is jealous!" Sharlene smiled. Unexpectedly. everything around her turned black. She was falling, falling into the interminable darkness.

"Ah…Ouch." Sharlene fell off from the sofa. She lay still on the floor and gazed at the ceiling. "Is the ceiling spinning or is it something wrong with my eyes?" Sharlene murmured.

She closed her eyes, and the feeling of being lifted came back to her.

"Not again." She yelled.

"Not what again, Sharlene?" Sharlene heard Nicolas's voice, she opened her eyes and saw Nicolas stare at her anxiously and she was in his arms. Sharlene gave him a faint smile and then she closed her eyes. "Sharlene, Sharlene!" Nicolas shook her sturdily, but she didn't respond. Nicolas put one hand on her forehead, it felt like a piece of burning wood.

"She's got a fever!" Nicolas held her tightly and rushed to the stairs.

"Nick, what are you doing?" Martha just came back with the others.

"Martha, Sharlene's got a fever, she is... burning!" Nicolas shouted at her and rushed up to Sharlene's bedroom.

Martha was frightened. , Sharlene was a daughterto her, and she had never been ill before… "Quick, Vicki call our private doctor, Sarah and Celia go and cook some Ginseng soup and some ginger soup, too. And the others do what you supposed to do at the time." Martha ordered in a hurry. Soon everyone was gone to do their work; she was left alone in the living room. Martha felt scrawny, there were sweats on her forehead, and her hands were icy cold, her heart pumped faster and faster by minute. `Oh, Nicolas, what have you brought her this time?' Martha sighed and slowly she climbed up to check Sharlene.

"Ah…" Yami's head hurt like hell, he put his hands about his head.

"What's wrong Yami?" Yugi was really worried.

"I, I don't know! It…hurt so much…" Yami couldn't talk anymore.

The light from his millennium puzzle shone intensely, it made both Yami and Yugi closed their eyes.

Illusorily Yami saw a girl appeared in front of him. She was in all white, and her face was half covered.

All he could see was her bright ruby eyes. And suddenly, a dagger was stabbed at her heart and slowly she fell backwards.

"No!" Yami cried and tried to grab her, but it seemed to take him forever to reach her, Yami saw she fell on the ground and then disappeared.

"No! No! Sharlene! No!" Yami screamed. Unexpectedly, his headache was all gone. He found that he was sitting on the floor and Yugi was sitting on his bed, looking down at him. Y Yugi was upset; he had never seen Yami like this before.

"Are you ok Yami? What just happened?" Yugi asked.

Yami looked at him and said "Sharlene, I saw Sharlene!"

"Sharlene! I saw Sharlene!" Yami repeated.

Yugi still didn't get what he was saying.

"I saw a girl all in white, although her face was half covered, but I still could see her eyes, and their Sharlene's!" Yami described. Yugi needed time to think what Yami just said.

"Oh, no!" Yami cried.

"What is it, now?"

"I saw she was stabbed right… at the heart and she fell down, vanished…" Yami stared at Yugi, his eyes were full of pain.

"But, it doesn't mean…" Yugi didn't finish the sentence.

"If it didn't mean she died, what else would it be?" Yami lost control.

"Calm down, Yami, there were lots of people having ruby eyes; it might as well not be Sharlene!" Yugi tried to comfort him.

Yami glanced at him and sighed. "She has been all over my mind lately. Yugi, I don't know why. I thought I know her but I couldn't remember anything at all."

"Yami, I've got an idea! Why don't we use the millennium necklace to see the past?" Yugi suggested. Yami nodded.

Yugi took out the necklace and requested to see the past, the millennium necklace shone and taking them back five thousand years…

Yami and Yugi soon found themselves floating in the air. They looked down and saw the ancient Egypt Palace, they next thing they saw was Pharaoh Yami sitting on his chair, Seto Kabai stood beside him with millennium rod in his hand. They were watching people duelling down at the centre of the meeting room.

"There is nothing else." Said Yami. "Shall we go back and try again?" Yugi asked. "Ok."

They went back to reality and tried a few more time, but all they saw was dulling actions and more duelling action, there were a few girls around the Pharaoh, but none of them looked like Sharlene. Yami shook his head "No use, there is no use."

"Yami, let's try it again!" Yugi did not want to give up just yet. "Let go back a bit further to your childhood! We may find something!"

The necklace shone and again took them back in time.

Now, Yami and Yugi were looking down at the Royal Garden. At a big lawn, there were three boys about eleven years of age and they were practising sword fighting.

"Hey, Yami, that must be you!" Yugi pointed at one boy with spiked hair.

"Yeah." A faint smile appeared on Yami's face.

"Hey, that boy looks like Kaiba!" Yami looked at the boy whom Yugi pointed at.

"That must be him but who is the guy I was fighting with then?" Yami asked.

Down at the lawn, little Seto was watching the other boys fighting. The taller boy swung his sword at Yami, but Yami ducked down and quickly, he stretched out his leg and kicked the taller boy's ankle. The taller boy fell on the ground heavily. He lay still on the ground with the sword tightly in his hand. His face was twisted; it looked as if he was in a great pain.

"I'm sorry." Yami stood up and threw his sword away before he went to check on him.

"Sorry about what?" The taller boy pointed his sword at Yami's throat, slowly and steadily, he stood up with Yami. "Do you honesty believe that I'm that kind of weak?" The taller boy smirked. Yami curled up his lips, he jumped up and kicked the taller boy's wrist, the pain make him dropped the sword. With another nice kick on the ground, Yami had the sword in his hand, and then he pointed the sword at the taller boy with a victor's smile.

"Wow, Yami, that's impressive, I never knew you are such a good fighter!" Yugi admired.

"I didn't know that either." Yami was a bit surprised too. He looked down at himself.

"Yami wins again." Said little Seto. The taller boy glared at him, Seto just ignored it.

"It was a close one." Yami put the sword aside.

"Well, you need more than tricks to win your brother…" Seto looked at the taller boy; his words were full of haughtiness.

"Brother?" Yami and Yugi looked at each other, completely outraged.

"Yugi, Yugi! Someone's calling for you!" Grandpa knocked on the door; they went back to the reality. Yugi opened the door and got the hand set from Grandpa.

"Thank you, Grandpa!" And then he slammed the door.

"Kid! He is probably thinking about some new strategy for the card game." Grandpa smiled and walked downstairs.
