The Ledge

The cold rain poured down as thunder rumbled in the distance. A few streaks of lightning flashed across the sky revealing a figure standing on the edge of the roof of the Kaiba Corp. building. His cold cerulean eyes stared down at the ground so far below.

~The angry boy, a bit too insane, icing over a secret pain.

You know you don't belong.

You're the first the fight. You're way too loud.

You're the flash of light on a burial shroud.

I know something's wrong.

Well everyone I know has got a reason

"Put the past away."~

As he watched each drop of rain fall God knows how many feet to the ground, he began to reflect on why he was here.

*~* He looked down at his deck as the Crush Card infected all of his monsters with its devastating virus.

"All my cards, gone. This is the only one I have left. And I'll use it to revive Saggi the Dark Clown."

"You're last move and you're going to waste it reviving a clown? Oh I forgot, it's the only move you can make," Pegasus taunted. "Bickuri Box, Attack!"

"Mokuba, I'm so sorry. I have failed you."

The monster, which looked like a deranged Jack-in-the-box, emerged from Toon World and pulled a sickle from its mouth. It sliced in a Z-like movement, slicing the dark clown to pieces.

"You have no moves left, so I win," the creator of Duel Monsters taunted of the Kaiba Corp CEO. *~*

He would never forget that moment. He had failed his younger brother for the first time. He had silently promised himself the instant before his soul had been sealed away that he would never fail Mokuba again. *~*

No, he hadn't kept his promise. He had let Mokuba down again. Back at the orphanage he had promised that he would always be there for his younger brother. He had broken that promise not once, but twice.

*~* "Seto, tomorrow is the play at school! Are you going to come to watch, big brother?" Mokuba looked up at the brown haired teen while using his puppy-dog eyes. That look always hit Kaiba's soft spot.

Kaiba looked down at the dark haired boy with a smile. "I'll be there, I promise Mokuba. And then we can go out for dinner."

Mokuba hugged his big brother happily. "I can't wait till tomorrow, Seto. It's going to be great!"

The phone rang then and Kaiba had picked it up. His voice snapped into that coldness and Mokuba knew that was the time to head up to bed.

Kaiba sighed after hanging up. He walked up to tuck Mokuba in.

"Sorry Mokuba, but I might not be able to make it tomorrow. Something came up a few minutes ago and I have to go out of town for a few hours tomorrow."

The younger boy looked up at Seto. His eyes welled up a little. "But you promised!"

"Shh…" Seto silenced Mokuba before he could protest more. "I'll see what I can do to get there on time Mokuba."

"Ok, Seto. Goodnight, big brother." Mokuba hugged his big brother.

"Goodnight, Mokuba," Kaiba smiled as he returned the hug then placed the covers up to Mokuba's chin. He then walked out of the room. *~*

To think that was only last night. When had Mokuba gotten so sick? If only that problem hadn't come up out-of-town. He would have been home to realize Mokuba was getting sick.

He felt it was all his fault that his little brother was laying in bed with a high fever. He had called a doctor to come take care of Mokuba.

~Well, he's on the table and he's gone to code.

And I do not think that anyone knows

What they are doing here.

He closed his eyes and was about to step forward off the ledge when he heard the door behind him open.

"Seto?" Mokuba's voice rang in Kaiba's ears even over the rain and the thunder.

He turned to his little brother.

"Seto, what are you doing?" Mokuba looked up at him innocently.

Kaiba sighed and picked his little brother up. "What are you doing out here? You're going to get even sicker in this rain!"

"But Seto, I missed you…"

Kaiba carried Mokuba back inside and put him to bed.

Seto thought silently as he sat next to Mokuba's bed. He felt like he had a fresh chance. He realized something in that instant.
