Chapter 5

“What's the matter?” Joey asked with concern. Ever since the brunette had lead him away from his brother, his demeanor was somewhat slouched. “Is there something I did wrong?”
Seto never realized that he had stared at Joey with a contorted face until the blonde had said something. He shook his head with a beaming smile. “No! You didn't do anything Joey. I was just thinking about something.” As the song resolved into words, Seto leaned forward and pressed his body up against the teen's and almost allowed his lips to make contact with the other's. However, the realization caused him to cringe and pull back reluctantly.
Joey stared at him bewildered, but decided to ignore it. He leaned into the touch and relaxed his chin against Seto's shoulder. “This…is nice. It's better than what you were doing at the restaurant this morning,” he mumbled shyly.
The demon chuckled as he pushed Joey back to stare at him eye to eye. “Yeah, sorry about that. On the other hand, am I? You're quite the beauty, you know that?”
“Uh…thanks…” Joey stared down at the hardwood floor, acting as if the lights cascading across it were more of interest. “I barely even know you guys…” He felt two leathered digits press against his lips, shushing him from speaking anymore of the subject.
“It doesn't matter,” Seto soothed. “It's just a feeling you have inside that tells you when you've met that special person.” His smile widened when he noted the teen's eyes beginning to waver with tears. “Why are you crying?” He used his thumbs to wipe the salty liquid away and waited for Joey's response.
The teen shook his head. “I've never thought I'd meet someone so…so…”
“Passionate?” Seto finished with a smirk. He leaned in to where his warm breath washed over Joey's ear and whispered softly. “This is my favorite song. It kind of reminds me of you.” As if becoming the vocalist, he chanted the lyrics softly and erotically.
”When you start falling,
”When you start falling,
Who's gonna catch ya?
I'm willing to bet ya
it will be me.
Who's gonna love ya
like there's no other?
Search and discover
it will be me.”
I'm willing to bet ya
it will be me.
Who's gonna love ya
like there's no other?
Search and discover
it will be me.”
Joey moaned into the soft voice, practically melting like chocolate. He leaned back against Seto's hand, allowing him to resonate into his ear and began to drown in his thoughts about Seto. Maybe they could run away together and be happy. Alister didn't carry the same effect like the brunette did. There was something missing, besides the groping from the auburn brother. Joey could have very well gone without that. His face flushed as if he was about to burst with want.
”When all the others
have gone and hurt you.
Who won't desert you?
It will be me.
Weighing the options
so much to think of,
but when you think love
it will be me.”
There was a sudden halt to the soft whisper in Joey's ear. He looked up at Seto, staring at him with unease. “Seto?” The other's face had twisted to sheer horror. Joey turned his gaze after feeling a strange, heating sensation run down his spine and heard the, shattering tormented screams. “Fire?” He gasped when he felt his feet lift up off the ground and into Seto's arm. “How did this happen?” He started choking from the smoke and heat. “…Seto…” His vision blacked out, indicating that he fainted.

“Seto! Over here!” Alister called out. He stood on a balcony over the bleachers with two other demons and Ryou.
Seto growled irritably as he leaped off in another direction, jumping from the wall to a light fixture on the ceiling and then crawling out of a broken window used for a sun light. “That bastard, Marik. I'm going to get him for this.” He ran along the roof and jumped from the edge onto a tree near the gym. From there he met his brother and the chaos demons. He laid Joey securely on a branch and landed on the ground. His fangs grew twice their normal size as he gave a lion-like growl. “Marik! What's the meaning of this? I was told it wouldn't be for two hours!”
Marik backed up until he tripped on a branch and landed firmly against a tree with Seto's bare hand mere inches from his face. “Listen, Seto…”
“I am listening!” Seto exclaimed as his hair and eyes returned to their ordinary colors. “And it had better be good!”

“I didn't expect it to happen so soon. I had it set for two hours, but someone had disturbed it by either walking on it or moving it. I'm sorry Seto. I didn't mean to put your human in danger.”
Seto's exterior softened as he pulled back and then used his other, gloved hand to punch Marik in the jaw, forcing him off his feet onto the ground. “That's for not thinking things out first.”
Bakura and Ryou gasped as they ran to Marik's aid. He pushed them away and pointed at the green haired demon with exasperation. “You can't keep protecting that human! He'll eventually have to die.” He wiped the blood from his lip and smirked when he noticed Seto's shoulders tense from the statement.
Seto stared at Marik from over his shoulder. He let out a small snarl and then approached the tree Joey was lying in to take him down. He altered his hair and eyes back to human and waited for his partner.
Alister quickly joined him and bounded off toward their cove in the mountains. They bypassed a black, cloaked figure, carrying a silver scythe. They decided to ignore him and continued toward their home with the human in tow.

“We're going to have to take him home, Seto.” Alister explained as they halted in front of the lake that they bathed in every morning.
Seto nodded and sighed in sympathy for the teen. “I know, but I don't want to take him back. I'm…exhausted.” He dunked his hand into the water and brought it up to wash Joey's face from the soot. “Why don't you do it?”
Alister blinked. “That's what you get for trying to convert into your full demon form while freaking out over a mere human.” He turned in the direction of town and sighed. “Besides, I don't know where he lives.” He waited for a response. After he didn't receive one for five minutes, he faced his brother again. “Seto?”
The other demon sat on his knees with his head positioned downward toward Joey's lifeless form. The shadow of his hair concealed his eyes, hiding any expression. His arms dangled haphazardly at his sides with his fingers curled against the ground. It appeared as if he fainted in that position.
“Seto?” Alister knelt in front of his brother as he chuckled lightly and sat on the ground while staring at Joey's face. “Just as well. He probably would have killed me for calling you a `mere human.'” He gently caressed the side of the teen's face with the back of his gloved hand. “Seto's right taken with you. I guess you could say I am too. Neither of us has felt this way before. However, is either of us willing to admit it to each other?” He smiled down at the blonde, as if expecting an answer. “No, I guess not. Seto and I aren't into losing to one another. I guess we're both stubborn bastards.”

The night whispered with melancholy. One demon peered out across the lake, waiting for any moment that his brother would look up and ask the time of day like he always did when he woke up from repairing himself. That wasn't going to happen any time soon this time. It appeared that Seto had gone into a deep siesta to repair his mangled, inner structure. It had really torn him up, more than usual.
Demons normally didn't go to sleep, not even during the night. If they had, it was supposedly to heal their selves. However, it took deep concentration of slow breathing and clearing the mind. In Seto and Alister's lifespan, they had grown accustomed to it, so it took less time.

Alister sighed as he crawled over to Seto's leaning form and pushed him back onto the soft grass. He stretched the other's legs out in front of him, cringing when they popped. His lips curved up slightly when Seto's bangs slid to the side, revealing his closed eyes. “He looks like an angel,” Alister whispered and gently pressed his lips against Seto's. He moved his hands over the sleeping form, barely making physical contact. He then relaxed his weight on top of his brother's body, sighing with contentment. “Please wake up soon, brother.”
