“You both have made a dilemma in this world. And because of it, a dead human is walking about on the streets! It was not his time to leave the earth yet.” Yami scorned. He stared down at the chaos brothers with irritation. “What do you think YOU should do about this problem?”
Both brothers winced from the question. Ryou stood behind them, not quite happy with them himself. They had killed his best friend, but only he knew that. He crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes becoming a deadly gleam.
“Well, the human shouldn't have been on the bus.” Marik mocked, trying to lighten the situation, which actually only made it worse.
Yami abruptly stood up from his throne, moving his right hand sideways. The motion caused Marik to fly across the room and hit the wall brutally.
Bakura's shoulders flinched as he kept his eyes shut tightly. He didn't want to end up in the same situation as Marik. “Please, Master. Allow us to retrieve him for you.”
Marik growled at his brother as he stood back up and cracked his back. “Like hell we will!” He was suddenly slammed against the floor, face down, from another quick shift of Yami's hand.
Yami stared at the top of Bakura's head and smiled thoughtfully. “No, I believe I will have Ryou to retrieve him. That human has been through hell all thanks to you two. Seto and Alister will have their revenge on anything that gets in their way now. You can count that they'll be after you.”
Marik yanked his face from the black marble to stare at his superior with horror. “Are you telling me that the human we killed is Joey Wheeler?” He sat upright and pressed his back against the wall in panic. “Oh, god!” The memory of the dance came flooding back to him, Seto's hand up in his face, threatening to disintegrate him into ashes. If he feared any other demon it had to be him. He approached the throne on his knees and bowed his head lowly. “Please, master, don't send Ryou for him. I'll do it…please!”
“Why the change, Marik?” Yami asked with amusement. He suddenly enjoyed the chaos demon squirming before him in fear that he would actually be killed by Seto or Alister.
“If you send Ryou out there, he'll be punished in mine and Bakura's place for something he didn't even do. And I won't allow Bakura to be punished for an idea that wasn't even his. Please…let me…go.” If Marik could see either of his lovers' expressions, he would have weakly smiled and maybe broke down into tears. However, the thought of protecting them was the only thing that was processing.
Yami smiled with approval. “Fine, I'll leave you to the job. Make sure you get it done, or your head will be served on a silver platter to serve before Seto and Alister.” He chuckled eerily as he watched Marik's eyes widen with shock. Only Marik could picture that terrible scene with red eyes staring hungrily down upon his head and a few other limbs.
Marik swallowed the lump in his throat as he stood and took one last bow before vanishing to the mortal world.
The head demon stood and took his leave. “You can do whatever you wish now, Bakura.”
Bakura and Ryou exchanged anxious glances after Yami disappeared into the shadows. Marik was actually risking his life for both of them and it caused them both to grimace in shame.
`We shouldn't let him do this by himself.' Ryou thought with remorse. “Bakura?”
Bakura looked up at his lover and blinked in response.
Ryou smiled thoughtfully as he approached Bakura and knelt by the other's side. He wrapped his arms around Bakura's neck and hugged him. “We shouldn't allow Marik to do this by himself.”
“I agree,” Bakura nodded. “But we'll be punished if we help him.”
“He loves us and if we love him we'd help out in any way.” Ryou rested his head against Bakura's shoulder to think. “What if we just watched him, to make sure he doesn't do anything wrong?”
The silver haired demon smiled slyly. “You know, that isn't a bad idea.” He hugged his smaller lover and lifted them both to their feet. “Let's go.” He grasped Ryou's hand gently as they also vanished, leaving a stream of smoke to linger in the air.

Joey collapsed onto the ground in front of the pond. He stared blankly into the sky and wanted to cry, but his body wouldn't allow him that leisure. He was dead. That was the whole point of being dead. You couldn't cry, shit, or feel. It's completely false; he'd keep telling himself! It had to be! There were no such things as zombies. But yet, here he was, white as death its self and no pulse. “Shit!” He exclaimed. He clinched his eyes shut, feeling a rather familiar coldness rush over him. At least he could feel something. Detachment, complete, and utter detachment. “Dad…” His body relaxed as he opened his eyes and tearlessly wept over the loss of his father.
Marik watched the teen warily from behind a tree. He really didn't want to tell the boy that they needed to speak with the devil before Seto and Alister found him. He took a deep breath before he made himself visible and cleared his throat to catch the blonde's attention.
Joey only glanced toward the other's direction and then turned away. He wasn't in the mood to mess with anybody, especially if that somebody could help him with his problem. “Go away,” he mumbled.
The demon flinched with irritation. That was definitely no way to talk to a chaos demon. He growled as he stormed up to the teen and picked him up by the collar. “Listen here, you little brat…” He paused after he realized that the blonde was staring at him unfazed. His eyes were pale and unemotional. It somehow reminded him of Seto, but full of sorrow. “Stupid human,” he grumbled and lowered Joey down onto his feet. “Come with me. I'm going to help you get your life back.”
The teen gasped. “What? You can do that? Wait what do you mean, `stupid human?'” He ran after Marik to get a clear explanation.
Marik sighed. “We're going to have to make an exception since it wasn't your time to depart from this world. And, yes, you're a stupid human.”
Joey frowned. “Then what does that make you?”
Marik smirked. “I'm a demon.”
“Oh.” The blonde blinked. He couldn't really be surprised, considering he was dead. “Um…thanks,” he whispered. “For helping me.”
The demon curled his lip in disgust. `How pathetic.' However, it kind of felt good to be recognized with appreciation, including if it meant it would be the end of his life. He shook it off as he opened a black portal with his mind link. As they started to walk through the void, his words from the incident with Seto returned. `You can't keep protecting that human! He'll eventually have to die.' Why of all times did he have to recall that? Because it was true? He grumbled to himself as he stared at the teen from over his shoulder. `What do they see in him? He's just a normal human.' He absently smiled when Joey caught him staring.
Joey grinned back at him.
