Prologue
Storms And Nightmares

It all happened so fast… The familiar dark entity directed it's fatal blast at the pure white figure, who fell in a crumpled heap on the cold stone floor of the crumbling palace that was coming down around them… (1)
It was as if that blow had struck his heart and pierced his soul as well… He hurried to where she lay and fell to his knees, cradling her lifeless, featherlight body in his arms… Tears of grief streamed down his cheeks and fell upon her own face, beautiful, even in death… He had lost her… The only pure spark of light in his own guilty, dark soul and he had lost it forever…
Just then, perhaps it was real or perhaps it was due to his own shock and grief, but it was as if he heard her sweet, clear voice in his mind, calling to him…
"Lord Set…(2) At least I can protect you with the light of my spirit…"

"Uhhh!." With a gasp, Seto awoke and his eyes snapped open. Breathing heavily, he sat up in his bed and brought a hand to his forehead. He was shaking slightly and had broken out in a cold sweat.
That dream again… He'd been having these dreams almost ever since he'd accepted his past life as the Egyptian priest, Set, and had decided to leave his old life as a wealthy CEO in present day Japan behind for a simpler, but fuller, life here in ancient Egypt… He knew he did not regret that decision, not for a moment, so that's not what these dreams could be indicating…
He shook his head, deciding to shrug it off for now. If worse came to worse, he could tell Nephthys, Si-amun or Mutnodjmet about it…(3)
Kaiba glanced at his closed window… He could hear the occasional roll of thunder or crash of lightning, along with the furious howling of the wind outside as it beat the garden trees against the window… What a terrible night. Even though there was no rain this was probably the worst and most destructive winter storm he'd seem in Egypt since he'd arrived…
Unable to sleep, the young former CEO pulled back his linen sheets and cotton blanket. After latching his window tighter against the storm, he did his cotton robe up over his linen night clothes and exited his room…

As he made his way down the main hallway, he opened Mariasha's door and peered into her room to check on her and make sure the storm hadn't disturbed her too… Fortunately, the girl was still sound asleep in her bed with Kuribo the cat by her side, purring contently.
Seto smiled to himself. The kid always had been able to handle things better then he would have, or would ever be able to for that matter. Where once she had insisted on keeping on all her bandages to cover her burn scars, she now wore only one bandage around her head where her eyes had been burnt away. Her hair was just about completely grown back and her scars had healed extremely well. Some of them were even beginning to fade away slightly.
Kaiba sighed as he quietly closed the door. Asha and little Khu and Kiya could never know how much they meant to him or what they'd done for him. Weather they were aware of it or not, not only had they given him back a part of his own lost childhood, but they'd helped him to fully atone for the sins he'd committed that had led up to his little brother, Mokubas, death… There were no words to express how grateful he was for that chance…
Up a little late, aren't we?," came a familiar female voice…
The young former CEO turned to see Nephthys, The Lady of the House, standing nearby, that familiar knowing smile on her face.
"Hello, Vixen," he greeted her. "You couldn't sleep either, hmm?."
She shook her head. "No," she admitted as she adjusted her robe.
"The storm?."
"That too," she agreed. "How is Asha?."
Seto smiled. "Fine. It hasn't bothered her in the least."
Nephthys smiled back, a look of relief in her eyes. "Well, at least one of us is sleeping through it." Then she folded her arms across her front. "It's strange, but I haven't been this bothered by a storm in a long time."
Me too, the young man silently admitted to himself…
"It feels like there's something different about this one…" The Lady of the House said thoughtfully. "I wonder if it's affected those in Waset at all…" Then she shook her head. "Well then," she changed the subject. "Since neither of us can sleep, why don't we go to the kitchen and I'll make us some hot orange spice tea?."
Seto put his arm around her shoulder with a soft chuckle. "You read my mind, Kitsune. Let's go."
Together, they went along the rest of the hallway and down the stairs to the kitchen where they chatted quietly over a small fire and a jug of hot orange spice tea as the storm continued long into the night…

(1) I've decided this story will mostly have references to the manga canon version of Kisaras death rather then the anime.

(2) In the manga and anime it was "Seto-sama", but seeing as this is ancient Egypt and not Japan, I thought the translation would be more appropriate.

(3) In ancient Egypt dreams were considered very important, like visions or premonitions of the future.
