The Pharaohs Gift
Ryou was awakened by a gentle nudge, he groaned and rolled over a bit.
"Come now Ryou," A gentle voice said "we need to get going if we want to home by
nightfall you know."
"Papa?" Ryou said sleepily rubbing his eyes
"Who else would it be?" His father replied with a smile.
"Where are we going?" Ryou asked still sleepy.
"We have to get to the market, the Pharaoh's birthday will be soon we must pay tribute
you know, now get dressed while I saddle the horses." Ryou's father said as he left his
room.
Ryou smiled he was happy his father was home, although he didn't know what his father did it separated them for days at a time and it got awfully lonely for Ryou. He had completely forgotten about the Pharaohs birthday everyone in Egypt was basically giving him a gift for turning eighteen. Ryou sighed as he left his room to help his father with the horses. No doubt his father loved him but the separations were beginning to put a strain on their relationship he hardly knew who his father was anymore and unfortunately it was the same for what his father knew about him.
They arrived in town sooner than he thought if they were lucky they wouldn't have to ride back in the dark but when they finally reached the market it seemed less likely. Everyone was there that could possibly be because of the Pharaohs upcoming birthday being so close they probably should've planned this sooner but their was no point in dwelling on that possibility now. His father grabbed tightly to his hand,
"Ryou do not let go of my hand if I lost you in that mess I don't know if I'd ever find you
again, and do not talk to anyone but me understand?" His father said sternly
"Yes father" Ryou answered quickly
Ryou knew how dangerous the market could be their were thieves, murderers, and Ra only knows what else within the crowd and he had to be careful. As much as he hated to admit it he was a prime target for them he was still quite young, only thirteen, and he was very feminine for a boy, he could easily be kidnapped or worse, he shook off that thought as they shuffled through the market. Ryou didn't pay much attention to what his father was doing his opinion really didn't matter on what to buy the Pharaoh, his father had better tastes anyway, he just was along for the ride really and for his father to show off if he happened to meet anyone he knew. He had often heard his so-called friends ask his father if they could buy him but thankfully his father refused any offer they made quickly saying that Ryou was most defiantly not for sell ever but that didn't stop them from asking again but his father always declined the offers. Ryou shook that thought away when he saw a cloaked figure watching him he couldn't see the mans eyes but he knew that he was looking at him the slight smirk upon the mans face made Ryou nervous as he clenched his fathers had tighter who didn't seem to notice as they began to walk from shop to shop. They seemed to be there for hours Ryou was beginning to get tired and that man was still following them. Ryou was suddenly picked up by his father, which startled him slightly.
"You getting tired?" He asked holding Ryou
Ryou simply nodded laying his head down on his fathers shoulder.
"We'll be home soon don't worry, think you can stay up long enough for the ride home?"
Ryou nodded, and noticed the bag in his father's hand he didn't really care what was in the bag he was just happy they could finally go home and the Pharaohs birthday gift was resolved, the Pharaohs high priest would soon come around to collect the gifts from everyone in a few days. Ryou's father placed him on his horse and the two set out on their way home. Ryou was a little sleepier than he thought as he nearly fell asleep on his horse a few times jolting awake before he fell off. He father laughed slightly, as he jumped off his hose and began tying Ryou's horse reins to his saddle picking Ryou up off his horse.
"We can't have you falling off and breaking your neck now Ryou." His father said
He held Ryou gently in his arms as he rode leading the other horse behind him.
Ryou smiled into his fathers shirt he really missed him and they could finally have some quality time together.
They rode quickly but someone else deliberately pulled his horse in front of theirs causing the horse to buck throwing Ryou from his fathers arms and to the ground.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Ryou's father said angrily as he jumped from his horse
going to his son's side quickly.
The man smiled slightly as he removed his hood. The smile Ryou recognized from the man in the market but who it was surprised him. The high Priest Seto stood before them.
"Sir…I am sorry for being so rude you startled me you see and…" Ryou's father
stumbled with his words as he bent down on one knee.
Ryou quickly did the same.
"It's quite alright." Seto said, "Please stand."
"What is it you require of me sir?" His father asked calmly
"Not you, your son." Seto said calmly as he stepped closer to Ryou
Ryou clamped his hand around his fathers and took a step away from the priest.
"My son? What for?" his father asked pulling Ryou behind him defensively.
"Your child has been selected to be given to the Pharaoh as a gift and…"
"A GIFT!" Ryou's father nearly screamed at the priest who seemed to get very irritated
by this as he snapped his fingers and two guards rode up to them.
"You don't really have a choice here so if you value your life you'll step aside and let us
take him without conflict." Seto said sternly and a bit crossly
Ryou's eyes went wide as the guards drew their swords ready to fight. He noticed his
father's hand on the hilt of his sword. Even if his father managed to beat the guards he
would not be able to defeat Seto and even so if they escaped they would only send more
to come and claim him. Ryou's mind raced.
"I would sooner die than let you have him!" His father said
"NO!" Ryou screamed as he threw himself in front of his father. So the guards would not
advance on him because they might hurt him too.
"Ryou get back behind me!" He said
"But they'll kill you! I can't let that happen!"
Seto quickly grabbed Ryou from behind and Ryou offered little resistance so that his
father would not be harmed.
"You're son is smarter than you obviously." Seto said smugly as he held tightly to
Ryou's waist as tears began to run down the side of the young boys face.
"Please! Don't take my son! I have already purchased a gift for the Pharaoh and…"
"I'm afraid a trinket can not replace such a beauty as your sons."
"Then take me instead, I can serve the Pharaoh any way he pleased." Ryou's father
pleaded as he fell to his knees.
"I'm afraid the Pharaoh has a different use that only your son could fill." The priest said
with a devious grin.
"I will not allow you to use him that way!" He said advancing on him
The guards quickly grabbed him pulling his sword from his hand and ready to slit his
throat.
"No! Please don't!" Ryou cried which stopped the guards who looked to Seto.
"I would usually let them kill you but since this is a last request of a son…I will allow
you to live but I will not be so generous if there is a next time!"
Seto quickly straddled his horse still holding Ryou with him as the two guards dropped
Ryou's father and got atop their horses as well as they rode away from him heading for the palace. Tears flooded down Ryou's cheeks when he could no longer see his father who had begun to cry as well when they began to ride off.
