The Ties of Friendship

Chapter One: Meeting Windy

“And now, class, I would like to introduce our latest transfer student: Miss Windy Kiarala,” said the teacher. The boys of class 10A were rather interested in this new girl.
“Wonder if she's cute,” Jonouchi Katsuya whispered to Yugi Motou, his friend.
“Jonouchi! You don't just say that. I hope she can play Duel Monsters,” Yugi whispered back.
But by now, the girl had walked to the front of the class. She had long, straight, fair hair and light blue eyes. She was wearing a bandana in her hair, and had the friendliest grin Yugi had ever seen. “Hi, everyone!” she said cheerily. “My name's Windy, and I hope I can be friends with all of you.” Some of the boys made choking noises.
“Miss Kiarala, please take a seat near…” The teacher cast around for an empty seat. “You may sit behind Mr. Motou.” The girl smiled and bounced - you couldn't really call it walking, it was too cheerful - to her seat behind Yugi.
“Hiya. Are you the Yugi Motou who beat Seto Kaiba?” the girl asked Yugi in an undertone.
“Ah, um, I guess that I am,” Yugi replied quietly. What did you say when it was the spirit of a pharaoh who possessed you sometimes that had done it?
“That is enough discussion, class. The next person I catch whispering will have to describe their conversation in English,” said the teacher. The gossiping died down, and the class opened their workbooks.

After school, Windy stopped to talk to Yugi and his friends. Yugi beat Windy to the questioning. “Can you play Duel Monsters?” he asked almost immediately.
“Sort of. I know how to, but I really stink at it. I prefer fiddling around with computers and electronics. You know, that type of stuff,” Windy replied. She was not in the least ashamed of her lack of talent when it came to Duel Monsters.
“Can you fix Duel Discs?” Anzu asked. “'Cause Jonouchi broke his.”
“Honda was da one who dropped it!” Jonouchi protested.
“Only because you ran into me,” argued Honda.
“Sure, I can fix Duel Discs real easy. Just lead me to it!” replied Windy. When it was shown to her, she gazed at appraisingly. “It's in bad shape, but I've seen worse. It'll take me maybe a day to fix it.
“I have a question for you four. Not about the Duel Disc, but, well… Can we all be friends?”
“Actually,” replied Yugi, smiling, “I was just about to ask you the same thing!”

Chapter Two: The Awakening of Shadows

As Windy walked home, she stopped at the mall. “Lessee, Mom gave me some errands, and I'm sure they'll have everything here. I need milk, and a loaf of bread, and…”
Just then a man walked up to her. He wasn't that tall, but quite muscular. He had spiky brown hair, and, when he spoke, an Australian accent. “Listen, girl, couldya take this offa me?” He dropped a necklace with a broken chain in Windy's hand. There was only a simple charm on it, a black metal ankh with a green gem in the hole.
“What's your name, and how much do you want for it?” Windy asked suspiciously.
“The name's Valin, an' it's free. I broke the chain on it, so I had ta buy it. But, I think it's kinda weird, so I'm tryin' ta get ridder it.”
“Oh, okay. If you're sure it's free, I suppose…”
“Thanks, mate,” the man said. Windy looked at the necklace more closely. When she looked up again, the man had vanished, leaving the necklace in her hands.
“Oh, well. He just left it with me, so I might as well take it,” said Windy, more to herself than anything.
Meanwhile, the man, Valin, laughed. “Wait `till I tell Master Darts she took it!”

“And then, he just disappeared,” Windy finished. She had been detailing what had taken place the night before to Yugi, Jonouchi, Anzu, and Honda.
“What did you do with the necklace? You didn't keep it, did you?” Yugi asked her hurriedly.
“Of course I kept it. What else was I supposed to do, flush it down the toilet? Gosh, Yugi, you're kind of superstitious, you know. In fact,” Windy pulled out the necklace, restrung on a piece of yarn, “I'm wearing it right now! Isn't it neat?”
“Can I see it?” Yugi asked in an almost tentative voice. When Windy passed it to him, he examined the stone more closely.
“Tha' stone looks kinda familiar or sumthin'” commented Jonouchi. “Looks like tha' one weird rock.”
Anzu spoke everyone's fear aloud. “That necklace contains a fragment of the Orycalcos stone!”
They waited to watch Windy's reaction. Windy merely took back the stone and held it up to the sunlight. “Oracle's Fist? Hmm, is that what you call it? Sounds cool. Well, I best be off, if I want to get that Duel Disc fixed. I had to spend last night running errands. I'll return it to you tomorrow morning, `kay, Jonouchi?” And with that, she rushed off in the same bouncy way as usual.
“So what do we do now? Any bright ideas, Yugi?” Honda asked.
Yugi watched Windy's receding back. “I don't know, Honda. We can hope for the best, but I just don't know.”
Not comforting words under the best of situations.

Windy was having a hard time falling asleep. When she finally did, she had the weirdest dream. A dark shadow was standing over her. “Give me your memoriesss,” it hissed. “Your hopesss, your dreamsss… Give me your mind… It won't hurt… too much.” Windy groaned and dropped into a deeper, dreamless sleep.

Later that night Yugi awoke to the ringing of the telephone. “I'll get it, Grandpa,” mumbled Yugi sleepily. He picked it up. “Hello, Motou residence and game shop,” he said into the phone.
“It's Windy. Meet me in the park. Bring your deck and Duel Disc.” And then the person on the other end hung up. Yugi was a little shocked. The voice had sounded like Windy's, but it wasn't. Why would she want to meet him at this time of night? And why was he to bring his deck, if Windy didn't duel? Yugi thought of the Orycalcos shard in Windy's necklace, and decided to call his friends.

“Remind me why we had to get up in - yawn - da middle of da night, Yug,” Jonouchi said, even sleepier than Yugi. They were all walking to the park, everyone but Yugi half asleep.
“Hate to say it, but I have to agree with Jonouchi on this one,” Honda added.
“I think something's wrong with Windy. She called me up just a bit ago, and it sounded like she wanted to duel me. I'm afraid the Orycalcos has taken over her mind,” Yugi said for the second time, though it felt like at least the twentieth.
“Very definitive, Yugi. I understand everything. Are you sure it wasn't a prank caller or something?” asked Honda scornfully.
“Leave Yugi alone. I'm sure he's right on this one, and I'm going to stand beside him for it all. Or are you just scared, Honda?” retorted Anzu.
“Stop arguing, guys. We're almost there. And look, there's Windy.”
The figure standing in the middle of the park was definitely Windy, but, somehow, she was different. Windy's hair was loose, and rather in her eyes. The look on her face was no longer friendly and cheerful, but mocking and evil. Her blues eyes had a tint of red. But the most noticeable thing about her was that she was wearing a Duel Disc. A Chaos Disc.
“So you've finally arrived, Pharaoh,” said Once-Windy in a cold, mocking voice. “Now, let's duel!”

Chapter 3: Dueling with Darkness

“Windy! What the heck's wrong with you?” yelled Yugi.
“That weakling you call Windy is gone. She was too weak, so Master Darts… upgraded her. And the result stands before you. Of course, Windy didn't join us willingly. She would have been so much better off, if she'd listened to you, Pharaoh. But enough talking, let's get down to business.” Once-Windy activated her Duel Disc. “Maybe you haven't realized yet you don't have a choice. If you refuse to duel me, then I'll simply attack you without you activating your Duel Disc. Now go!”
Let me handle this, Yugi!” Yami Yugi took control. “I'll duel with you. And I will find a way to save my friend as well,” he said.
“So, you've decided to face facts. But if you win, Windy is the one the Orycalcos will take! It's a lose-lose situation.” Windy drew her cards. “Aren't I lucky? I drew the Seal of Orycalcos! And now I activate it.” A strange blue-green symbol appeared on the ground around Once-Windy. She laughed as the same symbol appeared on her forehead. “And I summon Mechanichaser in attack mode. Thanks to the seal, he gains 500 attack points. And to think, he was a powerhouse already. Some people have all the luck. And obviously, you're not one of them!”
“We'll see about that. Have you finished our not?”
“What more need I do? As far as I can see, you've lost already. No matter what you do, you'll never see Windy again.”
She's lying, Pharaoh. If we draw, then the seal of Orycalcos takes nobody.
But how do we make sure we draw?” Aloud, Yami said, “I place one monster in reverse defense mode, and end my turn.”
“You do? What a pity. It won't last long. I play Stop Defense!”
“Oh, no,” said Yami quietly.
“Oh, yes,” replied Once-Windy with a smirk. “It was Big Shield Guardna, too. That card has no attack points, meaning my Mechanichaser can wipe it out easily. But first, I summon Heavy Support Mechanism, which also gains 500 attack points. Mechanichaser, wipe out Big Shield Guardna! And Heavy Support Mechanism, attack his life points directly. Leaving you with 600 life points. Poor you. Who's going to save you once you lose, pharaoh? Will it be Jonouchi, too inept to take care of his Duel Disc? Or will little Yugi, a boy who can't duel without a spirit to save him…” Suddenly, for only a few seconds, Windy returned to normal. “Yugi? Wh-where am I?” she said, a look of confusion on her face.
“Windy, you must end this duel now! We're both in great danger if we keep dueling!” Yami yelled to her. But it was no use.
“I don't know what happened, but don't expect a repeat performance. Now, where were we? Ah, yes, that's right, I was winning. I'll set one card face down, and end my turn. After all, I want the fun to last.”
How are we supposed to tie with her? We've got Self-Destruct Button, but how are we supposed to have 7000 or more life points less than she does? Wait…we also Swords of Revealing Light and Snatch Steal. I think I get it, Pharaoh!”
“I think I do, too, Yugi,” Yami replied mentally. To his opponent, “I play Snatch steal, and use it to control your Mechanichaser. Then, I activate Goblin's Remedy, and use it to increase your life points by 600, and play Swords of Revealing Light.”
“What are ya thinkin', Yug?!” yelled Jonouchi. “Keep this up, an' she'll really crush you!”
“You're even dumber than I thought. Do you want me to have all those life points? I'd say that you might actually have a strategy, if there was one that involved losing miserably. Since it's my standby phase, I gain 1000 life points from your Snatch Steal card. Then, I summon Reflect Bounder, and use Heavy Support Mechanism's special ability to equip it to Reflect Bounder, increasing Reflect Bounder's attack points by 500. That means he has a total of 2700 attack points! You must really want to lose, Pharaoh.”
“We'll see about that. I'll draw my card, and then end my turn.”
“So you've given up. Oh well, not like I care. I summon another Heavy Support Mechanism, and end my turn. In case nobody's noticed, I now have 6600 life points.”
“Actually, since my standby phrase, you've got 7600 life points. Exactly 7000 more than mine. Which means I can play this! Self-Destruct Button! This card can only be activated if you have 7000 more life points than I, and it reduces both of our life points to zero. I may not win,” Yami said, “but I certainly won't lose! For if we draw, then the Orycalcos takes no one.”
“Do you know what you did, Pharaoh? You picked the one strategy that truly defeats me! You'll pay for this, Pharaoh! You'll pay…” And as the Seal of Orycalcos vanished from the field, the shard in Windy's necklace shattered. Bits of the stone flew everywhere.
“Yugi, Jonouchi, Anzu, Honda, is that you?” Windy asked in her normal voice.
“Windy!” exclaimed Yugi joyfully, having also returned to normal. “You're back to normal!” He ran up to her, a huge smile on his face.
“How did I get here?” asked Windy. “'Cause last that I remember, I was asleep in bed.”
“You don't remember dueling me?” Yugi asked her.
“I didn't duel you. I couldn't have, I was asleep. I had a really weird dream, then I stopped dreaming, and then I woke up here.” Windy looked around her. “Yugi Motou, I think you have a lot of explaining to do.”
Yugi sighed. “Well, it's kind of a long story…”
