Ties that Bind - Chapter 1

Disclaimer: I do not own YuGiOh or it's characters.

Authoress notes: I'm trying to stick more to the Japanese version of YuGiOh, which I've only seen up to the beginning of the Noah arc. ^^; so as of yet, I do not know what happens after that. Just to try and keep away from confusion, I'm going to place this after that.

Summary: Yuugi's grandfather is keeping a secret from Yuugi - a BIG secret that will change the young boys life forever - will Yuugi be able to cope?

It was just one of those days - everything was perfect bliss; nothing could possibly go wrong. Yuugi and his friends - Jonounchi, Anzu, Honda Hiroto, and Bakura Ryou, as well as Kaiba Seto- but most of the group refused to think of him as a friend - were now sophomores in high school. There was no life threatening situations, no Duel Monsters tournaments, and just boring, everyday life.

"So why don't we go to the arcade?" Jonounchi Katsuya said as the group sat outside in the courtyard for lunch that day. Spotting his `enemy' coming out of the school building, Jonounchi threw a challenging glare at Kaiba as he walked by the group, silent as usual.

Anzu rolled her eyes, exasperated with Jonounchi. "We ALWAYS go to the arcade - lets do something else this afternoon!" Daintily she picked at her food, saying she was 'watching her weight'.

"Ano...." Bakura Ryou started thinking, "we could go to the movies..."

At the mention of 'movies' everyone nodded happily - Terminator 3 had just been released; and they were all more than eager to see it.

"So we'll meet at the theater at 5? That's when it starts," Yuugi informed them, having momentarily stopped eating to listen.

"Hai!" Everyone chorused in agreement. They all gathered up their things to head back to class when the bell rang.

"Ja ne, minna-san!" Yuugi yelled to his friends as he and Anzu quickly made their way to class.

Jonounchi and Honda waved - they had gym, while Yuugi and Anzu had Chemistry in the science wing.

~~~~ 5:30, Movie Theatre

"Yuugi!! Up here!" Jonounchi waved to his shorter friend - he and the others had gotten to the theater early, and were more in front of the line.

The multi-haired boy waved back and nodded, running up to the group. Out of habit and instinct, the high school student reached for his Millennium Puzzle, checking to make sure it was still there. Sighing in satisfaction, the familiar heavy weight of the puzzle rested easily in his hand, supported by its chain.

They all chattered about different things until they were able to get their tickets to go in.

Mou hitori no Yuugi was, to say the least, bored. Restless even.

After all, what's a Game King to do when there are no game's to be played?

The spirit sighed, and mentally checked on what his aibou was doing - he and his friends were at what Yuugi had called a `movie theater'.

~~~Later! After the Movie

Yuugi excitedly waved bye to his friends - they had just gotten out of the movie theater after seeing Terminator 3.

Letting the door slam shut behind him, Yuugi flicked the lights on so he could see where he was going.

"Jiisan!! I'm home!!"

Yuugi stopped, finally noticing that the house was dead silent.

"Perhaps he went to the store for something aibou?" The voice of YuGiOh the spirit
from the Millennium Puzzle - made the shorter boy jump in surprise.

Yuugi whirled around, panting. "Don't do that!! You scared me half to death!" He paused, and then thought about what his darker half just said. " Hai; he could have stepped out - but he would have left a note somewhere..."

Both spirit and teenager looked around for any sign of a note; and found none. The two met up in the hallway, groaned, and slumped to the floor; their backs against the wall.

The red flashing light from the answering machine caught Yuugi's attention suddenly. Standing up, the high school sophomore played the messages, hoping that maybe his grandpa called.

"Moshimoshi, we're calling from the Kabuki Insurance Agency -"

"Konnichiwa, I'm calling to offer you a once-in-a-lifetime deal! We-"

Yuugi groaned. "stupid telemarketers..."

"Konnichiwa, Mouto-san. This is Doctor Tomoe from the hospital. I'm calling about the results to your tests that were run the other day for cancer. Would you please give me a call as soon as you can? Arigatou Mouto-san."

Yuugi's eyes widened in shock and confusion- Cancer tests? On HIS jiisan??

The puzzle spirit watched his aibou carefully, confused about what was going on. What were they talking about? Cancer?

"Yuugi? Daijabou ka? What does he mean by `cancer'?" Vaguely, the puzzle spirit wished he knew more about this time that he was trapped in - back in their time, most sicknesses had no name; but healers did their best to cure the ailment. If the sick one were to die, it was the will of the gods. Why did these modern day healers have to be so complicated?

"I'm not sure; but we'll ask jiisan when he gets home." Yuugi sighed in frustration, as he slowly drug himself into the store front incase any customers came.

Hmmm....short so far...I wonder if I should add more to it....

jiisan = grandfather
Yuugi = Game
Konnichiwa= good day, good afternoon
YuGiOh= King of Games

Ano= umm…

Moshimoshi= good day, is used over the phone.
