Walk-In
The first thing I remember is the scent of the air, heavy with the aromas of myrrh and natron. Then I saw the high priest stepping away from me, lowering the ceremonial hook that re-opened my senses. All had been done according to custom. The canopic jars stood in a row, each holding a portion of my body - the body I no longer inhabited. The sarcophagous was sealed and laid in the hidden place that I had had prepared for it. As the attendants left, sealing the tomb behind them, I looked around with approval. A mortal would have been blinded by the darkness, but to my eyes, the room fairly glowed with heiroglyphs - my road map to the realm of the gods.
I left the main chamber, and surveyed the rest of the rooms. In the first one were the comforts of home - my personal chariot, some favorite gaming items, even my beloved Cerval cat, who had preceded me to the afterlife two years before. In the next was the royal regalia, carefully laid out for me to use whenever I chose to take up my body again. But something was missing....
A haze came over my memory. Something very important had not been placed in my tomb, but what? And who would dare to disobey the orders of their God-King? Disturbed, I went back to the burial chamber. Here, in the ancient texts, I might find a clue. But as I read through the rites, it became clear that whatever was missing was not needed for me to join Ra. As I continued, the heiroglyphics led me through the sacred tests of the underworld. Still, even as my heart was weighed before Maat and Thoth, I wondered what it could have been.
The realm of the spirits does not move at the same pace as the realm of mortals. I spent much of my time trying to find out what had been left out of my possessions. I watched as my dynasty continued to rise, and then declined. As the new kingdom arose, I discovered that the offering baskets at the temple were left untended more and more frequently. Lacking the energy to continue, I sank into the dreamless slumber of the spirits. But still, something held me here.
