Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ When That Day Comes ❯ You Cannot Escape Your Past ( Chapter 5 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

A/N: See?! What'd I tell you?! Not a single review (except the one Kirei just recently posted which I think broke it!) and guess what I got cursed with? WRITER'S BLOCK!!! I f I was the cussing type, this whole page would be filled with bad words directed towards those who read and didn't review, excluding Kirei and Saki. Y'know, I should really learn how to keep my mouth shut…
So now all of you who read this, review or I won't be able to update for another two months again! And I don't care if you're flaming it!
Oh, before I get sued, I don't own YuGiOh. But the three characters of Rikoh, Kirei, and Saki are owned by me. As well as the soon to be villain. And Usagi… And Rikoh's mom… And Akira… Ah, the heck with it! And the note that seems to appear every time, OOCness will most likely happen, so be forewarned! (Don't you just love that word?) And lastly, another thing to be forewarned about! There is going to be Anzu-bashing in this chappie. Sorry, but I just don't like her.

*New A/N: Sorry, but there was a part in here I kept on reading that just seemed so arbitrary and was never brought up again, so it also seemed unimportant. For those of you who know the story, you'll be able to realize what is missing… `cause it was just so strange. ^^;;;
When That Day Comes
Chapter 5: You Cannot Escape Your Past
*last chapter*
“Yes, pathetic little girl, you are. Welcome back to the Shadow Realm!” An oddly familiar voice rung out.
*this chapter*
“Why am I here?” I barely whispered out, finally opening my eyes. I realized that I was standing, though most of my energy was not present inside me.
“You don't remember, do you?” The stranger chuckled as he appeared in front of me.
“Remember what?” I tried to come back, but my voice was hardly audible.
“So you blocked out your American past, Rikoh? Tsk, tsk. So many important things happened there…”
“How did you know I used to live in America?!”
“Is that really relevant right now? Oh well, not a difference to me. Whether you remember it now or not, they will come back to haunt you! You cannot escape your past!” Maniacal laughing followed and slowly faded out as I watched his body gradually dematerialize.
A wave of coldness hit and brought me down on my knees. Clutching my sides, I began to breathe very heavily. I don't remember hearing that voice in America… What could have possibly happened that's returning now?
A vision flashed in my mind, causing me to flinch my eyes closed. I was on some sort of table with two people around me. One wore a hooded cloak, but the other… oddly resembled Saki… What were they doing?
*~*~*~*~*~*
I sat up quickly in bed, awaking from a nightmare. What was that vision? I was there… and so was some shadowed figure… Did I see Rikoh on that table?
For some reason, it seems very familiar… Why don't I remember where it's from? I must be going crazy with all the mishaps when moving…
I looked at the clock and decided it was close enough to school hours to start preparations. I could always try to finish my drawing if I have extra time.
*~*~*~*~*~*
I rubbed my eyes as I sat up, awakening. Huh? Oh yeah! I'm at the hospital! I almost forgot that I stayed to be with Rikoh.
I glanced to my right to see Bakura on his cot, still asleep. I never knew he slept on his side… just like I do… I wonder what time it is… Great! If I don't get ready now, I'll be late for school!
I rushed to the bathroom to change out of the pajamas I was in. I had walked back home yesterday to get a pair for both Bakura and I, as well as an outfit for today. After I was done, I woke Bakura.
“Bakura, it's morning. You need to get up,” I said hurriedly.
“But I don't wanna… another hour… please?” He mumbled.
“No, how many times are you going to do this within one week? I've decided to go to school and I don't want to be late! I wanted to check on Rikoh with you before I left,” I said while folding the cot I had used.
Bakura's eyes immediately opened and he rapidly sat up.
“I call the bathroom… first… Oh, you already used it…”
I began to laugh so hard that my sides hurt. Why was he so anxious?
“Yes, now hurry and get dressed.” I said, pushing the cot against the wall and starting on folding up Bakura's.
After a few minutes, Bakura and I were dressed and ready to visit Rikoh. We were just about to open the door when Bakura grabbed my arm.
“Uh, what was that for?” I asked.
His eyes darted left, then right. His voice was down to a whisper when he responded.
“Brace yourself. I sense evil inside there. I think we'll be walking right into a portal to the Shadow Realm. Remember what happened to you last time you were there?”
I took a minute to witness the horrid memories again, then nodded. I took a deep breath and opened the door.
Bakura had, in fact, been right. Just as we walked inside coldness swept upon me. I shuddered but Bakura steadied me. As if holding on for dear life, I held onto his arm in return. I couldn't feel my hand any more… Why can't I feel my arm anymore?!
“Shh, calm yourself. It's only temporary. How about you stay outside until I bring her back into the real world?” Bakura said calmly.
I could only nod as he walked me to the door. After I was outside, he shut it and a bright light emitted from underneath it a second later. The door reopened and Bakura waved me inside.
I began to enter, hoping that both had made it back safely. Rikoh was fine, and Bakura…
“So…?” I asked.
“I'm not quite sure. Let's try and wake her. I have to know why Rikoh would be in the Shadow Realm.”
Again I could only nod. He shook her gently and whispered to her soothingly. I never knew Bakura had such a soft side…
Rikoh stirred and opened her eyes slowly. Her skin was extremely pale and she looked thinner than before. What happened in there?!
“Rikoh! Why were you in the Shadow Realm? How did you get there?!” Bakura immediately shouted. There goes what I said about a soft side…
“It was him again…” She responded weakly.
“Who's “he”? Is it the same guy from last time?” I asked.
“Yes… but he sent me a vision in his departure this time…”
“What did you see?” Bakura questioned.
“How about I just send it to you mentally?” Rikoh said before we received a very odd image.
“What is that from?” I said, confused.
“I think it's from America… but I'm not sure. I don't seem to remember it…”
“Oh. Well, I hope you can figure out what it is soon. I have to go to school now so I'll see you afterwards. Bakura is staying though”
Bakura nodded and, actually, smiled. I walked out and almost ran towards the school in order to not be late.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“So, are you going to tell us like you said you would when you ran into 1st period?” I asked, walking up to Ryou as soon as Break started.
“Of course, Kirei! I just want wait until everyone comes,” Ryou responded, exhausted from trying to make it to school on time.
Yugi, Atemu, Otogi, Honda, Jonouchi, Anzu, Saki, and even Seto made their way over to Ryou's desk.
“So did anything happen?” Otogi started.
Ryou got almost a look of terror on his face. It's as if he just realized that he was stuck explaining everything to us alone. I know he hates the spotlight, but it'd be good to hear him as the leader, not the follower, for once. Ryou explained to us all about Rikoh being in the Shadow Realm.
“Wow, that's freaky…” Atemu said after Ryou finished.
Everyone just nodded in agreement, no being able to do much else with the shock. Since Saturday, it seems our lives have become filled with both excitement and devastation. I don't have a good feeling about the next few days…
“We should tell Saki what's coming up, shouldn't we?” I finally broke the overwhelming silence.
“Oh, right!” or something close was everyone except Saki's response.
“…Tell me what?” Saki asked, highly confused.
“Rikoh's 16th birthday is Thursday. We are planning a surprise party at Ryou's and you're officially invited!” Yugi said cheerfully.
“That sounds cool! Do you need any help with food?” Saki suddenly got louder.
“We've got a cake ordered at the local bakery but we don't have drinks…” Atemu said, realizing that normal teenagers don't drink water at birthday parties.
“Didn't you check me off for that on the list?” Honda asked.
Yugi pulled out a clipboard and flipped several pages before stopping to read.
“Oh yeah, we do have you down for drinks!” He said, chuckling nervously afterwards.
“Ok, we are so disorganized! Let's get everything straight right here, right now!” Otogi said a bit annoyed as he pulled the clipboard away from Yugi.
“Yugi and Atemu are in charge of the balloons, Ryou and Bakura are in charge of the cake, Anzu and Jonouchi are in charge of all other decorations, Honda is in charge of drinks and don't you dare bring only caffinated soda!” Otogi gave Honda a glare at the last part.
“What? Is the caffeine gonna mess up your brain more than it is already?” Honda retorted.
Otogi growled and was about to pounce on Honda but he noticed the teacher was looking over the classroom, meaning Break was about half over.
“Dieting helps to keep my awesome figure. I guess you wouldn't know that,” Otogi decided to respond coolly instead.
Now it was Honda's turn to growl. Those two were always at each other's throats. I feel bad that Jou is caught in the middle, considering it's his sister Shizuka that they're really fighting over.
“Let's just continue with the jobs, ok?” I said, trying to break the tension.
Otogi and Honda gave each other a last death glare before turning to face the opposite way. Otogi then continued with what was left of the list.
“Kirei and, of course, I are in charge of music. Yes, we do take requests. Kaiba… is in charge of balancing our charges-”
“I am NOT going to sit around and make sure you don't go over your spending limits! Especially for you freaks! I am only attending for Rikoh's sake!” Seto said coldly and crossed his arms. After a few moments, I saw him sneak a glance at Saki, who happened to be looking in his direction. Both blushed and turned their heads away.
“Ook… well, that's everyone and everything. Saki, you'd be most needed on… the other decorations crew.”
“HEY!” Jou and Anzu shouted in unison.
“Ok, I admit that if Jou puts his mind into it, he could conjure up something pretty good. But I have no regrets saying that to Anzu,” Otogi said, handing the clipboard back to Yugi.
“Ugh! I am too a good decorator!” Anzu's high-pitched whining sounded.
“I wouldn't even let Honda hire you, and I hate his guts.”
“Well, I know you're just jealous of my superb skills, so I'll let it slide!” Anzu chirped happily.
There was a group sigh from everyone, including Saki but excluding Anzu.
“I'll help with the decorating. The only things we need would be streamers, confetti, and other things like that. Does anyone have that?” Saki revived the conversation.
“We do!” Yugi shouted.
“Thanks. I think it would be good if we left the decorations at Ryou's house, right? I mean, we're having the party there and it makes no sense carrying things back and forth.”
“Yeah. And you could start the decorating this afternoon if you'd like,” Ryou contributed.
“Then it's all settled! By Thursday before school, everyone's stuff should be at Ryou's house besides the balloons,” Atemu concluded just as the bell for the end of the period rang.
*~*~*~*~*~*
I stood above Rikoh as we were caught in an awkward silence. I was looking directly into her eyes, but they seemed to look somewhere else. Though her eyes focused on me, it's almost as if they saw through me. I hate social situations….
“Bakura?” Rikoh suddenly questioned.
“Huh?” I replied.
“Do you think… I'd be allowed outside?” A flicker of hope could be detected in her soft voice.
“Are you up to it? You did rest a bit before, but you still haven't fully gotten back all the nutrients your body lost.”
“I'm up to it. It's already the afternoon anyways,” she said sitting up.
“Your mother might not like it. Don't you remember how hysterical she was before when she came in with Usagi?”
“Yes, I do. But she'll understand. She knows I like the outdoors so much. I only need her to get a new outfit for me; I am not going out in a hospital robe and the only other thing is my outfit from yesterday.”
I smiled and nodded. Rikoh returned my smile. I think… I think that was a real smile! It didn't seem fake to me…That's a first in a long while!
“I'll go tell your mother to come in and you can talk to her about it,” I said and walked out.
“Rikoh would like to ask you something,” I told Rikoh's mother as I approached her.
Usagi had wanted to lie down in his own bed after he talked to Rikoh, so she had just brought him home and returned. She nodded and followed me back to the room. I stayed by the door as Rikoh's mother continued forwards.
“Hey mom, I was wondering… Well, I wanted to know if I could go outside,” Rikoh asked.
“Did you ask one of the doctors?”
“Not yet…”
“I have no say over them! Why would you ask me first?!”
“I just wanted to make sure it was al right with you…”
“And who will accompany you?”
“Bakura of course.”
At that I looked up at Rikoh and gave her a look of confusion. She wanted me to go with her?! I would have never… But she… Does she really want me to? Rikoh returned my look with a smile.
“I'll be fine, mom. If the doctors allow me to go out, Bakura can protect me. He's strong and you know that. And could you possibly bring me new clothes to change into?”
“A-alright… But even if they do say yes, I'm not allowing you to stay out for too long! No later than 5! And I'll return shortly with an outfit for you anyways.” Rikoh's mother walked out after that.
I was blushing. My cheeks were fully red with embarrassment. I didn't know Rikoh felt that secure around me… Does she say things to her mom or something?
Rikoh began to slowly get off the bed. I quickly moved over to help her but she only smiled and shook her head.
“I have to get out on my own; I have to prove that I can walk outside even with a protector,” she said with apparent struggle on her face.
I nodded and stepped back. Though a hospital gown isn't always too flattering, it seemed to fall upon Rikoh in such a beautiful way. I couldn't help but stare in amazement of how pretty she looked.
“Um… I'm going to ask the doctors now…” Rikoh trailed off as I noticed her cheeks begin to glow.
She tried to avert my gaze and I realized that I too, was blushing. I turned my head away as the red on both our faces grew darker. She began walking slowly to the door, staggering slightly on the way. I held open the door as I followed her to the front desk. Her hand was absent-mindedly holding onto my arm as we walked and a small bit of color found its way to me yet again.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“I'm glad they let me walk outside. Aren't you Bakura?” I asked as we walked along the grass, arm in arm.
He nodded and tightened his hold on my arm slightly. I looked down at the outfit my mother had brought. She had said this would be “almost like a short date” so I had changed into the one skirt I own and a nice T-shirt from my closet. I hardly ever look inside my closet; I have no need for the flashy clothes my mother buys me. She says that I should be proud of my body and show off at any opportunity, but I think that's so embarrassing.
“Is everything ok, Rikoh?” Bakura asked.
I smiled at him as best I could. This afternoon I have been able to actually smile… That's not normal… Bakura is able to make me smile at anything. And for once, my smiles are real.
Bakura stopped walking in front of the lake near the hospital. I looked at him confused and he let out a small chuckle.
“I thought you liked nature. This looked like a good spot to take a rest; just incase you need one.”
“I'd like a rest,” I replied, returning his look into my eyes.
We sat down on the bench and watched birds fly by, flower petals fall to the ground, and children run around. One of the Sakura flowers fell in my hair and Bakura took it out and handed it to me. I took it in my hand and began to twirl it. Then, one fell on Bakura and I did the same thing he did to me. We both let them go as a huge gust of wind blew by and watched them sail into the distance.
Bakura looked at me and we locked gazes; neither of us could turn away. I became nervous as our faces seemed to draw closer. I don't know if it's Bakura or Ryou that I want to kiss… I don't know if this is what I want… The seconds seemed to go by like minutes until fate decided for me.
***************************************************************** *********************
Wowies! Is that a good cliffhanger or what?! Until my next update (which I promise won't be another two months), you shall not know if Rikoh and Bakura kiss or if fate has other decisions for these two teens… MUAHAHAHAHA!
Ok, Kirei, I'm soooooooooo sorry for that long wait. Yes I did have two people bugging me but I finally found my inspiration again! And please don't kill me for certain events in this chappie or the next!
Now review or I will skip over that part in the next chapter!
