Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ White Death ❯ Avalanche ( Chapter 1 )
A/N: Hey there all. I'm back...it's been a little while, hasn't it? Well, anyway, here is a little blurb that I came up with the other day while watching a movie with my friend. This is the first of a three part series and hopefully it's not to horrible. I think it's pretty accurate..and if not, well forgive me. I'm only human.
Disclaimer: I do not own YGO or any of the following characters. Sue me if you must...you will only get his piece of fuzz that is lying in my lap.
It had started out as a normal day. Well as normal as one could expect when you pack four seventeen year olds in a bus and expect them to be quiet for the whole time. If only there had been something in the air to warn them of the danger that one of them was headed towards at the end of the trip..and the sacrifice everyone else would make to help him.
Everyone one has heard of red-letter days. It's the days where something great happens, something completely unexpected that changes your life forever, but in a good way. It's the news of a birth, of an old friend coming back. But it's the black-letter days that you must watch out for. If only they were real and you could find a letter in your mail box saying:
ATTN: This is a black-letter day. Be on the look out and don't do anything incredibly stupid.
But for him, there would be no warning. All the nature signs were there, but what seventeen year old pays attention to things like that. . .he should have..and now, it might cost him his life.. . .
"Wahoo! Skiing trip!"Anzu rolled her eyes and grinned at her blonde friend, who was doing everything but literally bouncing around the motel room in excitement. "Calm yourself down, Jounouchi! Geeze, it's only the first day. We don't have to go skiing just yet."
Jounouchi Katsuya sent her a playful glare, and turned to his best friend. "You're excited about this, aren't you Yuugi?"
The tri-colored haired boy grinned at Jounouchi, his smile lighting up his rather innocent face. "Yes, Jounouchi-kun. I'm excited, but you're going to hurt yourself if you don't calm down. Especially in those lifts..I don't exactly like the looks of those."
Everyone looked up to see the ski lifts, and Jounouchi shrugged. "Come on, Yuugi...you've been higher up than that. Think of when we dueled on the blimp...or on top of Alcatraz with Kaiba. I mean, those where tons higher than what these are."
Honda shook his head. "Jounouchi, these are mountains. While the blimp might have been higher...I doubt that Alcatraz was."
This time, the glare that came from the boy was real. "Ruin all my fun, will you? What are you guys so scared of? It's just a little snow! I mean..snow can't hurt you, right?"
"Unless of course, it's an avalanche."
All heads turned to stare at little Yuugi, who was focusing his attention on the lifts. He blushed as he noticed the stares of the others and scratched the back of his head. "It's really nothing to be worried about. You just have to watch the signs, that's all. There should be a sign that will tell you if you're going into an avalanche area or not. Nothing really to be scared of..."
Honda shrugged. "Well...we're smarter than to go in an avalanche warning area, aren't we?" The nods from everyone concluded his statement. "Now let's hurry up...my feet are getting tired from just standing here."
Jounouchi had really never seen anything like it, being on top of the mountain that was. Everything was covered in snow. The tree tops, the mountain itself...even his feet were becoming part of the white fluff that covered the ground.
They had started out on the easy trails, because most of them were a little rusty. Yuugi and him had gone skiing a few years back on a camping trip and Honda had been skiing his entire life. Anzu was the only one who was entirely new to this and Yuugi did his best to try to teach her. Jounouchi figured it was only because it gave the boy a chance to touch her; to be her hero.
It was a crazy thought, but for his entire life, he had always wanted that. To be some girl's hero; her knight in shining armor. Maybe someday he would get his chance...after all, there had to be someone out there who would date him. If not...well he always had his friends to lean back on.
He laughed as Anzu tripped again and she sent him a glare that would have killed the devil himself. Reaching down to help her up, he soon found himself in a pile in the snow. Yuugi joined them and Honda, coming over to see what was causing the hold up, slipped on Yuugi's foot and joined the dog pile.
That was how the day started and it should have been how the day ended...until Jounouchi opened his mouth.
"Hey guys..I'm going to go check out the rest of the trail. Anyone want to come with?"
Yuugi looked over at Anzu, who was still wobbling and shook his head. "No thanks, Jounouchi-kun. If I leave her alone, I'm liable to find her in a tree or something." He was rewarded with a sharp smack to the back of the head and he laughed. "See what I mean? Violent temper..could cause problems."
Honda shrugged. "I'll come with you for a little ways...but I might check out some of the harder trails as well."
So they were off, Jounouchi leading and Honda in the back. Jounouchi had always loved the feel of skiing. It was almost like flying and without the exception of an occasional fall, it was. The wind blew through your hair with a slight nip of bitter cold air from the snow.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a small trail. One that he'd never seen before and that was unusual. He though that he and Honda had covered these trails like there was no tomorrow. "Hey Honda! Look at this one!"
The brown haired boy came over and looked. "What about it?"
Brown eyes rolled and Jounouchi pointed. "It's one that we haven't been on before...you game?"
"I don't see a sign...Jou, that's not a good thing. If there isn't a sign, it's not very safe to ski on."
"Oh come on! It doesn't look that steep and look!" Jounouchi walked over and pointed out a little red sign. "See? Red. Now, it's got a sign. Can we ski on it now?" He groaned when Honda shook his head again. "Fine, I'll go on it by myself. You take that one over there and I'll meet you at the bottom...how does that sound?"
"I guess it's safe...Just be careful. You've never gone down one by yourself and if something were to happen...."
Jounouchi patted the transmitter on his belt. "That's what these babies are for. Now get going. I'll be down in a few moments." And with that, he was off.
He didn't know why Honda had been so wary. And looking back, he could still see Honda standing on top of the hill looking down at him. Idiot..he would be fine. He'd done this before, how bad could it be?
The trail wasn't bad at all, in fact, there was hardly little to it...The birds were chirping, animals were scurrying, the roar in the background.
Wait a moment...roar?
He heard Honda's call of warning to late. By the time he had turned around, all he could do was stand there in shock at the site coming towards him.
At the top of the hill, something was rolling down towards him. Something that seemed to be huge chunks of snow. It was far too big and seemed too solid to be a cloud...and it sure was moving fast.
Everything hit Jounouchi in one instant.
Avalanche.
Instinct took over as Jounouchi sped down the hill as fast as he could go, not caring about anything but getting out of there. Logic told him he'd never be able to outrun it, but it was worth a shot in his mind.
The snow took him over before he even realized it. His feet went out from under him and he sputtered, trying to keep the snow out of his eyes and mouth. Everything was moving in a blur as the avalanche carried him off and snow started to bury him.
He was trying to think of everything he had ever learned and he shrugged off his backpack, poles and tried to leave behind his skis, remembering that the items dragged you under faster.
He suddenly felt an enormous pain in his right side and blood began to seep down the side of his head as he impacted with a rock and held on to it for dear life. It hurt, LORD it hurt and he tried his best to keep his mouth shut as he felt the snow pour over him.
He felt the snow start slowing and all he wanted to do was breath. The snow was suffocating him...and vaguely, he wondered if Honda had seen him...
And then. . .
Blackness. . . . .
6/22/03: I took out the 1 next to black-letter day and made the work 'back' into 'pack'. It amazes me how you can send this to three betas and all three of them (including yourself) miss that XD Oh well. I'll probably be adding more changes later.
