Words of Comfort

Chapter 2

Yuugi woke up to find himself in bright room full of toys. Yuugi smiled. *I'm in my soul room. That means I'm safe from nightmares...*

*For now...*

The soul room was said to be symbolize the person's personality. Behind the doors were present the person's most secret thoughts, their memories and their hidden desires. Yuugi looked around, and as far as he could see, the whole place was littered with toys, mainly plush toys or puzzles. There were many doors, and every door was unique making them easy to distinguish from the others. Some of them had symbols depicting what was within; others were scarcely marked, like an unfinished thought. It was easy to see that Yuugi was an open, cheery, playful, caring spirit who also had some brain power to boot, and that he was still growing. You normally don't get to see all those traits put together.

*Hmm... I'm not very high on the maturity scale, am I? Gods I need to learn to be more organized.*

This is the second time Yuugi had ever been able to see his soul room. The first time was when he had to rescue Shadi from Yami's mental defences. Thinking of the ancient spirit, Yuugi decided to go check on him. There didn't seem to be much else to do. The last time he has been to Yami's soul room, he had not met the spirit. He wondered if Yami even known he had been there.

Yuugi walked across the dark hallway joining the two soul rooms. It was cold and clammy. The atmosphere here was lifeless; or rather it seemed to be sucking his life energy away from him.

*I wonder if this place is a part of the shadow realm.*

Distinctly creeped out by the thought and remembering what happened to him the last time he had been in a shadow game; Yuugi broke into a run and rushed into Yami's soul room. Once in, he gently shut the door behind him.

Looking around, Yuugi was dazzled. Yuugi and Yami couldn't possibly be more unlike. Where Yuugi's mind was bright and cheerful, Yami's was dark and forbidding. Yuugi's mind felt homey, but Yami's mind it felt like... it felt like...

*It feels like a tomb.*

Yuugi looked at the lustrous walls of molten gold inscribed with hieroglyphs. Yami's mind was very complex, with layers upon layers, riddled with secret doorways and hidden traps. Yuugi knew that many of the passageways were dead ends, and many of the dead ends were in reality camouflaged doorways.

Yuugi saw Yami descending from one of the stairwells directly facing him with feline grace.

//Yuugi what brings you here?//

/I... I'm not sure.../

Yuugi was shaken by the bizarreness of the situation. He and Yami still spoke mind to mind, but now their lips moved to accommodate their speech. Yuugi was somehow getting the distinct impression that the lip movement was pure formality and politeness on Yami's part.

/I couldn't sleep and then I woke up sorta and then I was in my soul room... and I thought I'd see how you were... Yami am I asleep?/

Yami frowned for a moment, and then answered //No Yuugi, you are not sleeping though to people in the real world, it would seem as if you are sleeping. I believe you are in a trance. You're mind must have been greatly troubled to have led you here.//

Yuugi was silent for a moment pondering if he should tell Yami about his troubles. *What would be the point? He'd never understand.*

//Yuugi.//

Yuugi looked up realizing that he hadn't answered the spirit's unspoken question yet.

The spirit sighed, momentarily looking completely normal like a normal person, but the illusion of humanity flitted away as quickly as it had come.

//Yuugi, what happened to Mai Valentine wasn't your fault and you know it.//

Yuugi was startled. *Can he read my mind?*

The spirit smiled, and this time the humaneness remained on his features.

*He looks so gorgeous when he smiles. He hardly ever smiles. (frown) In fact he smiles only when he is with me alone. But why?*

//Aibou, No I cannot read your mind. That is a power reserved with the Millennium Eye. Your face, your eyes, they are so very expressive. I can read your emotions as easily as an open book.//

~Those beautiful speaking lavender orbs.~

Yuugi looked down at his feet uncomfortably. *How to tell Yami?*

/Yami, I... I can't help but think that... that... /

Yuugi snapped his head up to find the carnelian orbs regarding him patiently, waiting for him to continue. Tears threatened to spill from his eyes. His plan to simply blurt out what he was feeling did not work. His throat choked from pent up emotion. *How to tell?*

Yami regarded Yuugi for a while, and then gave the boy the shock of his life as he picked him up and walked in direction of the throne. Once there, he sat down, placing Yuugi on his lap.

Yuugi blinked at the spirit wondering what had just happened.

//The throne is carved out of marble. It is not as soft like the chairs you are used to.// said the spirit by way of explanation, then sat silent waiting for Yuugi to continue where he stopped.

Yuugi was surprised at how safe he felt in his dark's arms. He knew that the Marble throne comment was just an excuse. They were in Yami's mind after all and being the powerful spirit that he was, he could conjure virtually anything in his soul room. A comfy chair would be a cinch. However, this did not bother him at all. He did not feel even the slightest bit awkward about his position as he snuggled closer to the spirit, laying his head on his chest.

/Yami I feel so guilty./ he murmured forlornly into his chest as tears spilled down his cheeks.

Yuugi felt Yami lift his chin so that they had eye contact and was surprised to see compassion in the spirit's eyes.

//Yuugi what you feel is natural. When times are hard, we all blame ourselves for our misfortune or try to pin the blame on others. You need not worry so long as you are with me. Look past the blame game, and accept the situation as it is. Then try to find a way to fix everything. Take it from me aibou; wallowing in self-pity won't solve anything.//

The spirit wiped the tears away with a thumb, and cupped Yuugi's face in his hands.

//It took me five millennia to learn that.// he said bitterly.
