Chapter 3

Yuugi was shocked as realization dawned upon him. It was so simple. He was upset that his friend was hurt and he put two and two together and misinterpreted it as guilt. And where guilt exists, there had to be a reason for it. He was hurting himself by looking for the imaginary crime he had committed.

As his mind cleared, Yuugi was overflowing with joy. He tried to express his gratitude to Yami, when Yami said, //I feel like that sometimes.//

/Feel like what Yami?/ Yuugi asked confused.

Amused crimson orbs gazed at him quietly and then replied //Happy.//

Yuugi felt like a bucket of ice-cold water had been thrown on him. He was shocked.

/Only sometimes Yami?/ he squeaked fearing a positive answer.

Yami nodded his head in reply seemingly interested in the boy's sudden mood change.

/Yami.../

//Yes aibou...//

Yuugi peered into the spirit's eyes not wanting to miss any emotion that might flicker through them.

/You are worried about you're past aren't you./ Yuugi said sadly.

When Yami didn't reply, he continued, /Yami please don't be sad. We are so close. I can feel it. Malik knows the secret to unleashing the powers of the millennium puzzle, and we already have one of the three Egyptian God cards. And if we pool our strategies and link our minds, we will surely win the battle city tournament. Please don't lose heart. I... I won't fail you again.../

Surprise flitted across Yami's features //Fail me again Yuugi? But Yuugi... you have never failed me.//

Yuugi sighed and looked away from Yami /But I have Yami. First at Duellist Kingdom, where I fainted on you, then when Bandit Keith was a mind puppet, I gave you away to stranger like an idiot child. And I have failed in... well... I have failed to keep cheer you up haven't I. Some host I am./

//Yuugi I...//

Yuugi looked back at him /Please Yami, hear me out. When I first completed the millennium puzzle, I made a wish on it, and that was to have a friend./ Yuugi smiled /After that... after that, I met up with the gang and made friends with them and most importantly... I found a friend... in you./ Yuugi put his hand up to the spirit's face, and stroked his cheek softly, gazing into the blood pools all the while drinking in the myriad of thoughts and emotions swirling in them heedless of their true meaning. /And after I met you, I made a resolution, and that was to help you in every way I can to recover your memories. And in the meantime, I would share with you my life. Make you whole. Teach you to be content despite your loss... make you happy.../

/I failed you Yami./ Yuugi murmured the last with a bitter smile as his hand dropped away. Tears threatened to spill from his eyes again so he looked away. He wiped them away on his arm before Yami could get to them.

Yami tried to get a word in edgewise, but was interrupted as they both heard Tea calling them from the real world.

/It's midnight. Why is Tea awake? Something must have gone seriously wrong. I must wake up. Yami we must hurry./

Yuugi looked back at the spirit, and was surprised to see the hurt in his eyes.

//Yes, we must go aibou. I sense disturbances in the shadow realm. We must fix it before things get out of hand.// And before Yuugi could inquire about the source of Yami's hurt, he found himself awake in his Kaiba Craft quarters. Yuugi heard Tea banging on the door frantically. Yuugi decided to deal with Yami soon as they overcome their latest predicament.

Yuugi rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, opened the door to face Tea.

"Yuugi, Ryou isn't in his bed." said Tea, her voice tense.

At that his drowsiness immediately fled from his eyes.

"Tea wait for me. I'll get my jacket, then we can check the uppermost level of Kaiba Craft. Yami can sense shadow energies emanating from there."

"Oh Yuugi please hurry" said Tea nearly hysteric with anxiety.
