Mockingbird

Joanna: Since `Chris' doesn't fit in with Eminem's song, I'm changing her name to `Chrissy.' Since Dartz doesn't have a niece (I think), Lainie, the original name in the song, will be his niece. I THINK that Dartz's wife was called Fiona. Is that correct? Enjoy…^_^
Dedication dude: …
Joanna: Hm, just say the disclaimer for now.
Dedication dude: ^.^ Okay! Joanna doesn't own Eminem, Mockingbird, Chris, everything else that's in the song, or Yu-Gi-Oh. Don't forget to Read and Review!

A crash sounded below. Lainie and Chrissy huddled in their room, tucked into a corner. More than anything, they wished that the world could just swallow them up.

(Lainie's POV)

Why won't Uncle Dartz stop yelling at Aunt Fiona? They used to be a great couple! Now, every day they're screaming at each other. Aunt Fiona throws everything she can get at Uncle Dartz, and he does the same back to her!

(Chrissy's POV)

Mommy and Daddy have GOT to stop it! I'm scared! Momma never cooks anymore. If Daddy remembers, he might make me and Lainie a PB+J, but that's it! I want to go back to the old days where everything was okay.

(Regular POV)

Another crash sounded again, followed immediately by the clang of china breaking.

“WOULD YOU STOP IT YOU B****? YOU'RE SCARING THE KIDS!!!” Dartz hollered at his wife.

“ME?! I'M SCARING THE KIDS?! YOU COME HOME AT DAWN SO DRUNK, YOU WOULDN'T KNOW IF I CHANGED INTO A CHICKEN AND BACK!!!” Fiona retorted.

In their hidey-hole, Chrissy and Lainie giggled at the site of Fiona as a chicken. They suddenly stopped. This was no time for humor.

A cockroach scrambled across Chrissy's worn out shoe. A couple of weeks ago, when she moved in, she would have screeched at the sight of any bug. Now, she was used to it.

She knew that her parents, well Dartz really, worked very hard. Fiona usually disappeared for the day and would return cranky sometimes and beat her and Lainie, or she would be unusually happy. Chrissy was old enough to figure out that her mother was a prostitute. She used the money to buy drugs, her addiction and habit.

Dartz and Fiona once again were yelling profanity at each other. Finally, Fiona, fed up with all the braying, left, slamming the door behind her.

A few minutes later, Lainie and Chrissy heard the door open and close again, but softly this time. Dartz must've gone out to buy the groceries. Either that or go to the local pub.

~*~*~*~
Ten Years Later…

Dartz sat in a comfy and over stuffed chair, staring at some photos. His inspiration, his life, the only people he loved were all taken away from him. He loved Lainie and Chrissy. Honestly, he did. If only he didn't marry that stupid Fiona.

*Flashback*

One night he came back from the grocery shop, where he unloaded the food from the trucks, to find his apartment surrounded by police. Lights flashed, and the sound of crying filled the air.

Lainie! Chrissy! What if they were hurt?

Dartz barged into his apartment, desperate to find his niece and daughter. Immediately, two armed officers blocked his way.

“Excuse me sir, but this apartment is off limits at the moment,” Big Tough Guy Number One grunted.

“But-but I live here!” Dartz protested.

“Oh, well in that case, come on in,” Big Tough Guy Number Two said, changing his attitude.

Dartz rushed to where Lainie and Chrissy usually spent their time: in their room that they shared. They were not in there. Dartz ran through the house like a madman, trying to find his two beloved little girls. Nowhere. They were not there.

Dartz ran back to the Big Tough Guys. “Where are the children?” he demanded.

“Oh. Them. You'll have to talk to her to find out,” Big Tough Guy Number One gestured.

Dartz hurried over to a stern looking woman in her 50's. “Excuse me ma'am? Where are the children?”

“Mr. Dartz I presume?” the woman asked, avoiding the question.

“Yes, yes. Where are they?”

“Mr. Dartz, you and your wife Fiona have been labeled irresponsible by the Protection for Children Society. You go to work, but you go to the bar after that, only coming home a couple of times not drunk. Your wife is a prostitute—“

What?” Dartz gasped.

The woman glared at him for interrupting. “Yes, you wife is a prostitute. She has been caught, just a few hours ago, and she will serve time in jail for the next couple of years. You cannot raise children on your own, so we have taken the liberty of sending your children away.”

“Aw-away? Away where?” Dartz said, starting to get angry.

“To an orphanage. You are not capable of taking care of the two young girls, Lainie and Chrissy. Of course, after your wife gets out of jail, they can visit you. However, you have no custody over your children. You are the father, and the custody usually goes to the mother,” the woman droned on as if she had recited this speech many times. Undoubtedly, she had.
*End Flashback*

Dartz continued gazing at the photos. If Seto Kaiba hadn't taken him in and taught him the basics of rapping, he would be lost. He owed Seto Kaiba a lot.

Kaiba had flown his wife, Chrissy, and Lainie to visit him, after Fiona had gotten out of jail. The visit was short and brief. Fiona avoided Dartz, as he did her. The children wanted to spend a lot of time with Dartz, but he had a lot of work to do.

When the weeklong visit had come to an end, Dartz had only gotten to see the girls for only a few brief moments. Fiona did not bother to conceal her joy of getting away.

~*~*~*~*~

Over the next few years, Dartz always sent gifts to his little girls. His rapping career was very successful, so he was able to buy expensive rings and exquisite mockingbirds.

Little did he know that Fiona was taking the gifts for her own needs, selling them to earn money. Lainie and Chrissy had no idea their beloved father or uncle was sending them gifts at all.

Yeah
I know sometimes things may not always make sense to you right now
But hey, what Daddy always tell you?
Straighten up little soldier
Stiffen up that upper lip
What you crying about?
You got me.

Chrissy I know you miss your mom and I know you miss your dad
When I'm gone but I'm trying to give you the life that I never had
I can see you're sad, even when you smile, even when you laugh
I can see it in your eyes, deep inside you want to cry

Cuz you're scared, I ain't there?
Daddy's with you in your prayers
No more crying, wipe them tears
Daddy's here, no more nightmares

We gonna pull together through it, we gonna do it
Lainie uncle's crazy, ain't he yeah?
But he loves you girl and you better know it

We're all we got in this world
When it spins, when it swirls
When it whirls, when it twirls
Two little beautiful girls

Lookin' puzzled, in a daze
I know it's confusing you
Daddy's always on the move, Mamma's always on the news
I try to keep you sheltered from it but somehow it seems
The harder that I try to do that, the more it backfires on me
All the things growing up as Daddy that he had to see
Daddy don't want you to see but you see just as much as he did

We did not plan it to be this way, your mother and me
But things have got so bad between us
I don't see us ever being together ever again
Like we used to be when we was teenagers
But then of course everything always happens for a reason
I guess it was never meant to be
But it's just something we have no control over and that's what
destiny is

But no more worries, rest your head and go to sleep
Maybe one day we'll wake up and this will all just be a dream

[Chorus]
Now hush little baby, don't you cry
Everything's gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up little lady, I told ya
Daddy's here to hold ya through the night
I know Mommy's not here right now and we don't know why
We feel how we feel inside
It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby
But I promise Momma's gon' be alright

It's funny
I remember back one year when Daddy had no money
Mommy wrapped the Christmas presents up
And stuck 'em under the tree and said some of 'em were from me
Cuz daddy couldn't buy 'em
I'll never forget that Christmas I sat up the whole night crying

Cuz daddy felt like a bum, see Daddy had a job
But his job was to keep the food on the table for you and mom
And at the time every house that we lived in
Either kept getting broken into and robbed
Or shot up on the block and your mom was saving money for you in a jar
Trying to start a piggy bank for you so you could go to college.

Almost had a thousand dollars till someone broke in and stole it
And I know it hurt so bad it broke your momma's heart
And it seemed like everything was just startin' to fall apart

Mom and Dad was arguin' a lot so Momma moved back
Onto Chalmers in a flat one bedroom apartment
And dad moved back to the other side of 8 Mile on Novara
And that's when daddy went to California with his CD and met Dr. Drè
And flew you and momma out to see me

But Daddy had to work, you and momma had to leave me
Then you started seeing Daddy on the T.V. and Momma didn't like it
And you and Lainie were too young to understand it
That Papa was a rollin' stone, momma developed a habit

And it all happened too fast for either one of us to grab it
I'm just sorry you were there and had to witness it first hand
Cuz all I ever wanted to do was just make you proud
Now I'm sittin' in this empty house, just reminiscin'
Lookin' at your baby pictures, it just trips me out
To see how much you both have grown, it's almost like you're sisters now

Wow, I guess you pretty much are and Daddy's still here
Lainie I'm talkin' to you too, Daddy's still here
I like the sound of that, yeah
It's got a ring to it don't it?
Shh, momma's only gone for the moment

[Chorus]

Now hush little baby, don't you cry
Everything's gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up little lady, I told ya
Daddy's here to hold ya through the night
I know Mommy's not here right now and we don't know why
We feel how we feel inside
It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby
But I promise Momma's gon' be alright

And if you ask me to
Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird
I'mma give you the world
I'mma buy a diamond ring for you
I'mma sing for you
I'll do anything for you to see you smile

And if that mockingbird don't sing and that ring don't shine
I'mma break that birdie's neck
I'll go back to the jeweler who sold it to ya
And make him eat every carat don't f*** with dad (haha)
